Nelson’s Chinese History Recognized
What: Chinatown Plaque Project Grand Unveiling Date: Sunday June 12th Time: noon Place: NW corner of Hall and Vernon Street For more information - 250-777-0258
Claus Schünke stands beside an inscribed rock acknowledging the fine contributions that the Chinese have made to the City of Nelson and area. This monument was organized by Schünke. He was surprised to learn that the Chinese have had such a strong influence and that there was very little information about their contributions. Schünke does a radio show on CJLY Co-op Radio and has also completed a 13 part series on the Chinese in Nelson. It is available on Co-op Radio’s website www.kootenaycoopradio.com. The official unveiling will be Sunday June 12th at noon.

This week’s EXPRESS UPDATE was produced by: Nelson Becker Valencia Curken Robin Murray
The Kootenay Express Update is produced by Kootenay Express Communications Corp. in Nelson BC. The purpose of the Update is to provide a media for the Nelson and area community. If you do not wish to receive the Update, simply send an empty
email to unsubscribe@expressnews.ca You will receive a confirmation email in return with instructions on how to complete your removal from our list. If you have any questions, send them to express-update-owner@expressnews.ca
Frequently Asked Questions
How did you get my email address? The emails that we use for the Kootenay Express Update are emails of people who have done business with the Express Newspaper or are emails we have received by personal request to be on our list. What is the purpose of the Kootenay Express Update? The purpose of the Kootenay Express Update is to provide the service of a community newspaper with such features as an events calendar, classifieds, opinions, diversions, for the greater community of Nelson and area. How can my friends receive the Kootenay Express Update? You can send your friends our email and they can respond with the word “subscribe”, or “newsletter” or “update”. What is the privacy policy of The Express? We will never share your email with anyone outside of The Express. We feel you are part of our family. Is The Express open for Editorial Submissions? Yes. We also want to support the non-
profits of our community and we welcome their editorial submissions. What happened to The Express Newspaper? The Express Newspaper existed as a print version for 22 years, but it could no longer compete against the big corporations for advertising. We are committed to being of community service and we are now in the process of creating the Kootenay Express Update as an alternative to the print copy. There are obvious benefits to an electronic Express Newspaper. We don’t have any printing costs or post office distribution costs. There is less restriction on space. Recipients can print out the pages that they so desire. There are also some disadvantages. Not everybody is internet connected. Reading off a screen is a different experience than reading off of paper. The Express Update seems to me to be a valuable way to publicize my business. How do I place advertising in the update? We are still working on this because in setting a price for advertising we want to assure ourselves, and you, that you are
getting the correct value for your dollars. We encourage you to get in touch with us so that we may begin this discussion with interested local businesses. How does the Kootenay Express Update support itself? At the moment, that’s a very good question. The Kootenay Express Update lives on a subsidy that it is receives from me, Nelson Becker. In the future, the Update will have to support itself. We are in the process of determining advertising value, as well as looking at other methods of raising the necessary funds.

Nelson Downtown Local Market Set for Big Opening Day The West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the Downtown Nelson Local Market on Wednesday June 15 in the 400 block of Baker St. for the second year. The market will run each Wednesday from 9:30 to 3 through the end of September, offering a mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, crafts, and art. The market requires that 80% of each vendor’s wares are locally made. EcoSociety has hired a new market manager to oversee the market. Kim Klassen will work with vendors, business owners, and city agencies to ensure the market’s success. “We’re thrilled with the response from vendors, the city, and businesses along Baker Street. The first market days are completely sold out, with over thirty vendors on the waiting list,” she said. “Customers will really appreciate the quality and diversity of offerings at the market this year, especially in combination with Baker Street’s amazing retail selection.” New for this year, Dick and Colleen DeJong, owners of Full Circle Café, will offer fresh-smoked local meat, including whole smoked chickens. Eggs and cheese will also be available to complement seasonal fruits and vegetables from the region. Crafts will include hand-made wooden drums and toys, locally made clothing and jewellery, and an array of body and home care products. Selkirk students uncover local history
Archeology field school offors opportunities to students and the public. Selkirk College’s School of University Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Anthropology Department at Hamilton College (Clinton, N.Y.), has provided an exciting opportunity for students to uncover their local history. A hands-on Archeology Field School will take place at Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village (near Lemon Creek) in southeastern British Columbia from June 18 to July 29, 2011. This year, Selkirk will join forces with Hamilton College; enabling two local students to attend the field school and providing logistical benefits and access to various, relevant partnerships. Nathan Goodale, who holds a PhD in Anthropology from Washington State University, emphasizes the purpose of the field school as a venue “to train students in excavation, survey, equipment used in mapping, as well as the archeology, ethnography and oral tradition of the interior Pacific Northwest.” Upon the completion
of this course, students will be eligible to be employed in the field as archeologists. Fourteen of the 30 pithouses located at the site have been dated through radiocarbon dating. During 2011, the field school will focus on dating the remaining houses in the village. Articles such as bone fragments, including beaver digits, have been found, with some dating back 3,000 years. The site (1.5 km north of Lemon Creek) will be open for an “Archeological Interpretation Event” on July 24, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Archeologists Nathan Goodale, Allissa Nauman and the Hamilton College/Selkirk College field school students will be on hand to provide an intimate and detailed tour of the site. A barbecue lunch will be provided and included as part of the tour. As the cost of the event is provided up front by the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Classic Society Sudoku and Hamilton College, a suggested minimum donation is requested to help cover the costs of the event. For more information on the event, visit www.slocanvalleyrailtrail.ca/ news.php -submitted

Composting Without the Pile!
Bring your unwanted fruit and veggie scraps to the Cottonwood Market A new program is in place with local farmers at the Cottonwood Market, where individuals can bring their fruit and veggie compostable scraps and the farmers will take this material back to the farm and use in their on-farm compost, turning food waste back into food Whether you don’t currently compost because you don’t want to attract bears or you don’t have a garden, now you can be part of the food cycle. The farmers will be bringing large containers (with covers) where we can deposit our organic matter. Food waste accounts for a sizeable percentage of product dumped in our landfills and is a major contributor to greenhouse gasses and air pollution. Please note: Only veggie and fruit waste will be accepted. NO MEAT scraps. Coffee grinds and egg shells are ok. You can get more info from the farmers when you see them on Saturday at Cottonwood Park from 9:30 AM until 3:00 PM. -submitted

The Kootenay Express Update Non-Scientific Survey Question Do you pick up hitchhikers? Yes No Why or Why Not?
Answers to this survey are completely anonymous: we have no way to identify respondents. This survey is intended to promote discussion. The deadline for submitting responses to this survey is noon, Have you hitchhiked? Thursday June 16th. We will Yes present the results of this survey No question in our next Update. If Click below or cut and paste the If yes, was it a good experi- you have an idea for a survey question, please send it to us at following into your address bar ence? If no, why not? to answer the survey: express@expressnews.bc.ca.
On many levels hitchhiking is a wonderful way to get around. You reduce the amount of pollution by sharing a vehicle, you have the possibility to meet new and interesting people and forge lifelong relationships, and it’s cheap. On the other hand, some people are concerned about safety or privacy issues.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X9CDVJS THE ANSWERS TO LAST WEEKS SURVEY In the last year, approximately how many times have you enjoyed the use of these Nelson cultural facilities?
Your Comments What cultural facility would you like to see in Nelson that doesn’t already exist? Why? MUSIC at Lakeside park A movie theatre! MOVIE theatre - what’s up? SKATEPARK I would like to see a good cinema. I live in Kaslo so I have to commit to eg. classes to make myself come in after work WOULD love to see more Int’lly popular bands at the Nelson Arena, like we had with Blue Rodeo, Jann Arden. How about Bare Naked Ladies, Roch Voisine, Anne Murray, Burton Cummings ?
A band shell (which would be great in Lakeside Park) I see outdoor amenities as being a large part of our ‘culture’. The lakeside trail, park, the Burlington Northern trail, Pulpit Rock, historic buildings and sites. These do more for me and my identity with the area than art galleries or museums. I live in Silverton or would frequent the venues much more often. RECENTLY released from family duties so will probably attend many more cultural events in the coming years.
