Anti -Car Author Speaks Out Thursday, June 30, 7:30-9:00 p.m. Nelson Municipal Library The Kootenay Carshare Cooperative, a progressive alternative to private car ownership, is bringing Yves Engler to town to give a presentation and lead a discussion on Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 pm at the Nelson Library. Everyone is welcome, admission is by donation and light snacks and refreshments will be provided. An anti-car, road-trip story, Stop Signs argues that the automobiles ascendance is inextricably linked to capitalism and involved corporate misconduct, political intrigue, backroom payoffs, media manipulation, racism, academic corruption, third world coups, secret armies, environmental destruction and war. It is a must-read for all those who wish to escape the clutches of auto domination. Invasive Plant “Knot” Welcome Trail Partners and Students Take Action to Halt the Spread of Invasive Plants Students from J.L. Crowe Secondary School along with many partners took action this week to remove a highly invasive plant from along the Columbia River. The culprit is Japanese knotweed, also known as Japanese bamboo or Mexican bamboo, and it can quickly choke out native species and reduce biodiversity. Supported by funding from the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) and led by the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC), the students and other partners took action to remove the knotweed infestation east of Trail, along Casino Road. With partnership from the Native Plant Study Group and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the project will also include restoration of the site with native plants. For more information on the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee and its projects, contact 250-3521160 or coordinator@kootenaywee ds.com and visit fwcp.ca for more information on fish and wildlife compensation programs. -submitted
Kendrick photography exhibit at the Nelson Library The exhibition continues until the end of July. Tim Kendrick’s photographs— Nelson-inspired images with unique approaches—are now on display at the Nelson Public Library. From the strong and silent black and white print of a Japanese stone lantern in a soft winterscape to his vibrant, otherworldly infrared landscape images, Kendrick’s lens offers a unique take on the texture of the region. “I took my first photograph over seventy years ago as a child and have been learning about photography ever since,” says Kendrick, whose experiments have most recently turned to infrared shots using an adapted digital camera. “If these photos have any value then perhaps it is to show that an amateur can, by cultivating the art of seeing and learning how to get the best out of inexpensive cameras, record print-worthy images of what is beautiful around us.” Kendrick’s images can also be viewed online at teekay.smugmug. com -submitted

The Kootenay Express Update Non-Scientific Survey Question Our governments need tax money in order to provide the services that they think we demand of them. Governments provide more services then we can possibly imagine and we pay taxes for them. We have to find a way to continue to give to the government the tax dollars they need for their services and we, as the taxpayers, must be guaranteed that our money is being spent effectively. We must prioritize the services that we expect the governments to provide. It
is not a question of GST/PST/HST, it is a question of what we are getting for our bucks. And that is the question that is not on the referendum. Where do you stand on the HST? Are you going to vote for keeping the HST tax or for reverting to a PST plus GST tax? I want to keep the HST tax I want to go back to a PST/GST tax system We pay too much money in taxes for what we get I don’t know.

Do you hitchhike? Why or why not? NO, I feel very humbled to ask for a ride. THAT was a long time ago when I was a teenager before I had a car and before the busses ran in the rural areas here. ALL experiences positive (>100) except possibly one when the guy was a little strange and I felt uncomfortable. I asked to be dropped off and I got out and caught another ride. MOST of the times ALWAYS a great way to travel! ONLY a couple times YES it was. I have hitch hiked thousands of miles and
have several personal good experiences of hitch hiking. MOST of the time YEARS ago to save money crossing Canada, when I think about it now, a lot of bad things could have happened NO scary people IT was long ago when I was young and naive. I missed the last bus from Balfour and was nervous about hitchhiking home. A guy finally picked me up and he was really friendly and we had a great conversation all the way into town. Couldn’t have asked for a better first hitchhiking experience.
I’VE hitchhiked way too many times to count- all good experiences. I hitchhiked quite a bit in England, many years ago. I very seldom have occasion to hitchhike now. MOST of the time but I did also have a frightening experience where I thought I would have to jump out of the car or possibly be raped. GREAT experience YES. Met many very interesting people. 99% good to great THE last time I hitchhiked was on Vancouver Island and was (as a woman) picked up by a middle aged man and the conversation was not
pleasant and I felt unsafe so got out at Port Hardy. WORRIED about safety. 90% good experiences...a few creepy ones but took the ride anyway. DID it lots when I was young. Mostly good experiences. Couple of scary ones. Once got out of a moving vehicle on a remote stretch of highway and he turned around. Lucky for me another car came along and picked me up. I like being able to ask a stranger a many questions as I can think of to have an interesting conversation OF course, community spirit prevails by helping one another
Do you pick up hitchhikers? Why or why not? THEY never offer to pay for gas I only pick them up occasionally for no apparent reason. IT seems only fair, since I’ve hitchhiked frequently, myself BUT only if they look non-smelly and don’t have a pet with them BECAUSE it’s fun to help people out and I feel better about myself for driving around alone! BECAUSE they need a ride and I have front seat only room. I will not pick up females if I’m alone.
I picked up one who had just been released from a penitentiary ONLY women, alone, and never with my daughter in the car NOT unless I know them NOT safe ONLY if I know them or they are someone who looks like they really need help - a woman with a child WOMEN only (I’m a woman) DON’T have car. I just about ALWAYS pick up hitchhikers. I think, “What would I feel like if I
were in their shoes?” WHEN I am in the mood to talk to an adult and they don’t look like they have a strong odor, I will sometimes pick up. SOMETIMES, and usually if I know them. GOOD way to meet new people WORRIED about safety. BECAUSE there
I’ve
been
ONLY during the day time and on my home stretch. THEY need a ride I don’t all the time- just
when I’ve got room and I’m in the mood BECAUSE I no longer drive but when I did I as a woman was driving solo and was concerned about my personal safety. I’M open to meeting new people. I consider it a bit of an adventure. THIS is a big area and hard to move around in without a vehicle. We can’t all afford vehicles. B.C. MOTOR VEHICLE AC T PROHIBITS: DANGEROUS WHY not? Young people needing rides into town!!

Other Survey Comments on Hitchhiking I have only had one bad experience picking up a drunk hitchhiker who proceeded to fall asleep on my shoulder. Otherwise, it’s been a pretty good experience getting to know a little about people.
THERE is danger in everything, including the air pollution from rising use of fossil fuels. I prefer to occasionally ‘risk’ hitching if it means I can keep one more car off the road.

The Kootenay Express Update Building Community Since 1988 554 Ward Street Nelson, BC V1L 1S9 (250) 354-3910 Nelson Becker, Publisher
This week’s EXPRESS UPDATE was produced by: Nelson Becker Valencia Curken Robin Murray
The Kootenay Express Update is produced by Kootenay Express Communications Corp. in Nelson BC. The purpose of the Update is to provide a media for the Nelson
and area community. If you do not wish to receive the Update, simply send an empty email to unsubscribe@expressnews.ca You will receive a confirmation email
in return with instructions on how to complete your removal from our list. If you have any questions, send them to express-update-owner@expressnews.ca
Frequently Asked Questions How did you get my email address? The emails that we use for the Kootenay Express Update are emails of people who have done business with the Express Newspaper or are emails we have received by personal request to be on our list. What is the purpose of the Kootenay Express Update? The purpose of the Kootenay Express Update is to provide the service of a community newspaper with such features as an events calendar, classifieds, opinions, diversions, for the greater community of Nelson and area. How can my friends receive the Kootenay Express Update? You can send your friends our email and they can respond with the word “subscribe”, or “newsletter” or “update”. What is the privacy policy of The Express? We will never share your email with anyone outside of The Express. We feel
you are part of our family. Is The Express open for Editorial Submissions? Yes. We also want to support the nonprofits of our community and we welcome their editorial submissions. What happened to The Express Newspaper? The Express Newspaper existed as a print version for 22 years, but it could no longer compete against the big corporations for advertising. We are committed to being of community service and we are now in the process of creating the Kootenay Express Update as an alternative to the print copy. There are obvious benefits to an electronic Express Newspaper. We don’t have any printing costs or post office distribution costs. There is less restriction on space. Recipients can print out the pages that they so desire. There are also some disadvantages. Not everybody is internet connected. Reading off a screen is a different
experience than reading off of paper. The Express Update seems to me to be a valuable way to publicize my business. How do I place advertising in the update? We are still working on this because in setting a price for advertising we want to assure ourselves, and you, that you are getting the correct value for your dollars. We encourage you to get in touch with us so that we may begin this discussion with interested local businesses. How does the Kootenay Express Update support itself? At the moment, that’s a very good question. The Kootenay Express Update lives on a subsidy that it is receives from me, Nelson Becker. In the future, the Update will have to support itself. We are in the process of determining advertising value, as well as looking at other methods of raising the necessary funds.
