opinion&editorial Fish Heads and Flowers

Fish Heads To the owner of the big pickup truck which sat idling outside the liquor store. We share the air! - all choked up Flowers To the person who found my phone at Lakeside playground. Thank you for trying to contact me and for turning it into the police when you couldn’t. Your efforts and honesty are MUCH APPRECIATED! - A grateful caller Fish Heads To landowners who use their property as a dumping ground for abandoned rusted vehicles, old tires, and miscellaneous junk meant for the landfill. And fisheads to those who decide squatting and building shacks with tarps and housing children has no consequences. - Frustrated community member Fish Heads To the well known Nelson individual .......for walking his dog and “pretending” to “forget” to scoop up the “doggie doo”.......You are NOT invisible....SHAME ON YOU!!! - The Girl Next Door

Flowers to the woman at my church who volunteered to watch my kids when they were sick on the day I had a job interview. Even though you ended up not having to, you gave me peace of mind by your offer. - Not-so-stressed-out Parent Fish Heads to people who stand by while the children they are in charge of chase birds. In the winter they are huddled together to stay warm and conserve energy and I have seen so many children over the years in the Nelson area chasing them, having a great time, while someone stands by and watches. Children need to be taught to respect all living creatures and to not scare them. Please be more thoughtful and responsible. - For caring not scaring Fish Heads Tail gating drivers, and ones who don’t bother to use their signal lights, well in advance - Frustrated driver

Frequently Asked Questions How did you get my email address? The emails that we use for the Kootenay Express Update are emails of people who have done business with the Express Newspaper or are emails we have received by personal request to be on our list. What is the purpose of the Kootenay Express Update? The purpose of the Kootenay Express Update is to provide the service of a community newspaper with such features as an events calendar, classifieds, opinions, diversions, for the greater community of Nelson and area. Is The Express open for Editorial Submissions? Yes. We also want to support the non-profits of our community and we will welcome their editorial submissions as well as work with them to help them with their needs. What happened to The Express Newspaper? The Express Newspaper existed as a print version for 22 years, but it could no longer compete against the big corporations for advertising. We are committed to being of community service and we are now in the process of creating the Kootenay Express Update as an alternative to the print copy. There are obvious benefits to an electronic Express Newspaper. We don’t have any printing costs or post office distribution costs. There is less restriction on space. Recipients can print out the pages that they so desire. There are also some disadvantages. Not everybody is internet connected. Reading off a screen is a different experience than reading off of paper.

What is the privacy policy of The Express? We will never share your email with anyone outside of The Express. It is not to our advantage to do so, as we feel that you are part of our family and you are part of an exclusive club. How can my friends receive the Kootenay Express Update? You can send your friends our email and they can respond with the word “subscribe”, or “newsletter” or “update”. How do I get removed from the mailing list? You can get removed by clicking at the bottom of every update is a link to unsubscribe. If you click that link you will be automatically unsubscribed. You can also send us an email asking to be unsubscribed. The Express Update seems to me to be a valuable way to publicize my business. How do I place advertising in the update? We are still working on this because in setting a price for advertising we want to assure ourselves, and you, that you are getting the correct value for your dollars. We encourage you to get in touch with us so that we may begin this discussion with interested local businesses. How does the Kootenay Express Update support itself? At the moment, that’s a very good question. The Kootenay Express Update lives on subsidy that it is received from me, Nelson Becker. In the future, the Update will have to support itself. We are in the process of determining advertising value, as well as look-

The Nelson Cares Society Launches a Spring Campaign

The Express calls for Summer Shorts Film Festival submissions.

In Nelson, 335 people per week are in need of emergency food, 300 people per year use the Stepping Stones homeless shelter and a large percentage of them stay for 30 days or more. Over 130 people per day access the Salvation Army’s free food, laundry and shower services. In case you think there is nothing you can do to stem the tide of increasing poverty, a $100 donation to the Nelson Cares Society will buy a man living in the homeless shelter, a blanket, some nutritious food, several good night sleeps, support from an Outreach Worker to find a job and a pair of work boots. You can help make Nelson stonger by donating online at www.nelsoncares.ca and click on the Paypal or the Canada Helps button.

Get your submission ready for the 5th Annual Kootenay Express Summer Shorts Film Festival. This unique outdoor festival celebrates the films and filmmakers of the Kootenays. The filmmakers are a mix of ages and range in experience from firsttimers to professionals. Cash and merchandise awards will be presented in the following categories: Outdoor/Adventure Award, Documentary, Drama/Comedy (fiction), and Youth Under 19. Deadline for submissions is Monday, July 25th by 11am. Visit http://watershedproductions.ca/film-festival/ for more information about the festival and submission guidelines. See you under the stars in front of our biggest screen yet (12 feet) at 8PM on Sundays August 21st and 28th in Lakeside Park.

The Kootenay Express Update Non-Scientific Survey Question Many people consider Nelson and area to be a What cultural facility would you like to see in Nelson that cultural oasis in a desert of industrialism. Do doesn’t already exist? Why? we as a community really support the facilities that we have? Click below or cut and paste the following into your The purpose of this week’s survey is to get a sense of how strong of a role our cultural establishments play in our community. Many of these establishments rely on taxpayer’s dollars to survive and exist. Are we spending our money effectively? In the last year, approximately how many times have you enjoyed the use of these Nelson cultural facilities? Touchstones Museum, Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar, Craft Connection, Oxygen Art Centre, Capital Theatre, Nelson Theatre Company (TNT), Mining Museum, Electric Tramway

address bar to answer the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NKJJ2T9

Answers to this survey are completely anonymous: we have no way to identify respondents. This survey is intended to promote discussion. The deadline for submitting responses to this survey is noon, Thursday June 9th. We will present the results of this survey question in our next Update. If you have an idea for a survey question, please send it to us at express@expressnews.bc.ca.

In the last year, approximately how many times have you enjoyed the use of these Nelson recreation facilities?

Your Comments I go to the gym or part of pool about 300 days a year. TOO bad the aquatic / community center cancels classes so frequently, now I find them too unreliable. I do not live in Nelson and am over 60. ALSO attend Jui Jitsu classes and Tai Chi classes. Although not facilities themselves, they take place in school gyms so that is what constitutes my 21+ times in a “fitness gym.” Sad that Swingers is being dismantled. THE Aquatic Center needs to be open earlier on Sundays…. many people feel the same. People that use the gym don’t sleep in on Sundays... they want to get up early, like always. Work out and start your day - not start your day and workout later.
