Taking action against violence during the 16 days of activism

Events throughout the week are to remember the Montreal Massacre and end violence against women December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women. It commemorates the Montreal Massacre in 1989 when 14 women were murdered at l’Ecole Polytechnique, 13 others wounded. Many of us remember where we were that day when we heard the horrible news....where were you? The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an International campaign that includes significant dates such as November 25 (International Day against Violence against Women), December 6th (National Day of Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Women) and December 10th, (International Human Rights Day) in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. The 16 Days Campaign presents an opportunity to raise awareness both locally and around the world and to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. The following events are taking place in Nelson: ROBIN MURRAY

After removing some asbestos siding, crews began demolition of a four-plex at 514 Observatory Street in Nelson. The structure was damaged by fire on July 3. The fire had likely been started by a poorly maintained propane barbeque.

City of Nelson launches 2009 citizen survey The Mayor and City Council want to know what residents think about the value of services provided by your local government. The inaugural 2009 Citizen Survey has been developed to get residents’ input on a variety of services offered in the Nelson area. Over 1500 residents have been randomly selected to participate in the survey. Surveys will arrive by mail this week. “Council needs to hear from residents in our community, as this feedback will be essential in helping us set budget priorities, evaluate the programs we deliver and improve services,” says Mayor John Dooley. Answers to the survey questions will help City of Nelson Council set budget priorities, evaluate programs and improve services. The survey can be mailed in or completed online through www.nel-

son.ca. Only those residents who received a survey by mail will be able to participate. The City researched surveys and tools used in many other municipalities. Linda Tynan, Director of Corporate Services, explains, “it was important for us to see what other municipalities have found successful in terms of process and tools. The survey has been developed to reflect the areas of interest and concern for Nelson residents, Council and Staff.”

Editorial Band-aids on a much larger problem If you read our front page this week, you probably know that there are some pretty big change happening at our local hospitals. The staff make-up at both the Trail and Nelson hospitals will be changing come January, and it will likely effect all of us one way or another. The changes are largely due to our aging population and the need for more beds to accommodate long-term patients. It is understandable that the hospitals are a likely place to make room, but isn’t this just putting a band-aid on the problem? The boomer group is just starting to move out of their homes and apartments and require a little more care than family and friends can provide, which explains the hospital changes. But this is not a unique, one-time situation; this group of the population is going to keep aging and requiring care in a retirement or nursing home setting. So are we going to keep adding retirement wings to hospitals? Wouldn’t it be better for the government to put some money into building, expanding or upgrading the retirement homes and nursing care facilities in our area? Sure, it would be a huge investment, but one that is going to prove necessary in the coming years.

I’m writing this letter in regards to a movement that has it’s hooks in our Provincial Parliament. It’s a form of modern fascism, interests that have infected our regional media forums as well as our members of Parliament. I produce a local youtube show that delves into politics and we’ve hosted Corky Evans and Katrina Conroy, both have stated their concerns over the growing role of lobby in BC politics. The role of lobby and the relationship between corporations and government has to be monitored very closely. History

provides precedent that inactive and uninformed voters quickly separate themselves from liberty and prosperity. As long as lobby exists in government we are moving towards an oligarchy. The distribution of wealth in BC over the last 3 decades leaves me breathless. And at a time when my vote fights with lobbyists to find representation. At a time when lobby funds it’s own representation. I can’t afford to give my representatives enough money and exposure to keep them interested in my world. I have to hope they’re just good

people. I have to hope good people continue to want my vote. I’m fortunate to live in a community that seems to be on top of many of the issues that challenge our elected officials. But I want more. i want to clear lobby from BC parliament. I want laws to forbid collusion between business, policy and media. And I want to see it happen at home first. KLH CT Scanner fundraising reaches $600,000 mark as ‘Light Up the Hospital’ Pledge Day approaches On Dec. 4, volunteer directors of the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation will be gathering at Chako-Mika Mall to celebrate the biggest event in their CT fundraising campaign,’Light Up the Hospital’ Pledge Day. Members of the Foundation have dedicated almost all of their efforts this year toward raising the $1.5 million required for the CT scanner. The fundraising plans include five major mailout programs, numerous challenges to businesses and service groups and a series of special events and projects. The campaign, and has just passed the $600,000 level in overall fundraising and it’s hoped that the ‘Light Up’ program will get them well past the $700,000 level.

“We’ve sent out over 1,000 thank you’s and tax receipts already and the greatest thing we’ve seen is how many have taken us up on our ‘$1,000 from 1,000 ‘challenge.” says Brian May, the Foundations Community Relations Chair. “So far we’ve had 85 donations between $1,000 and $4,000 and 28 of those have been from businesses and small groups.” The $1,000 challenge is an effort to unite any business, club or group of individuals to set a goal to raise $1,000 or more. “Right now, personally, I know of a half dozen groups who are taking on the challenge so I know there are others out there that will be surprising us.” he added. Cheers to good wine and good service at new BC wine store by Stephanie Taylor The old Mermaid Gallery has been transformed into a showroom of another sort; one for hundreds and hundreds of bottles of BC wines at the new BC Wine Guys store. Opened three weeks ago, the store features a huge selection of 100 per cent BC-crafted wines and a staff that reads like a who’s who of Nelson’s wine experts. Jon Langille coowned and ran the All Seasons restaurant for 13 years. The restaurant became known for it’s Northwestern Canadian cuisine and impressive wine lists. “The food was easy,” Langille said, “but the wine was tricky.” When he started the All Seasons, BC wines were not on most people’s radar. But by the time the restau rant was sold,

the wine list was almost exclusively BC. Having collected an extensive knowledge of the product through the restaurant and continuously reading up on new trends, Langille felt that instead of staying in the restaurant business he would try a BC wine store. “Just wine is a lot more appealing, it occupies less time and is much less complicated than a restaurant,” he said. BC wines have become well respected on the global palette in the past 10 years, but supplies are relatively small compared to other growing regions, which keeps the BC wine industry a hidden gem of sorts. Because of the large range in temperatures in the province, there is a broad growing region that can sustain a variety of different grapes. This results in a wide variety

of different wines being produced in BC, 500 or so of which are sold at the Wine Guys’ store. While about 20 per

cent of the products that Langille and his wife Laurie sell can be found in any government run liquor store, there

is a huge selection that is only released in small batches from the wineries and never makes it to the government stores. And if

you’re worried about paying higher prices at such a specialty store, don’t be. All of the prices at BC Wine Guys are equal to the government stores, and are not marked up from the winery price. Nelson on the town: El Taco, a writing contest and the Cornerhouse for breakfast Dear Reader, It is December and I am still riding my scooter. You have probably seen me around town. I am the cute guy with the orange flag. I have discovered that as long as the temperature is above freezing, it is warm enough for me. Last Tuesday, I was about to have lunch at El Taco. I really like their Tortilla Soup. As I passed by the library on Victoria Street, there was action in the basement. CBAL – The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy had set up a drop in service to

access needs and direct people to appropriate services within the community. I must admit that while I am all for literacy, I did not know anything about CBAL. The organizer told me that CBAL is a non-profit organization working to improve literacy in our community.

They might be helping an adult who has trouble reading or they might be helping a recent immigrant learn English. The Cornerhouse Cafe is closing forever on Dec. 20. I am so disappointed. Every Saturday morning I would drop by the Cornerhouse for my breakfast and enjoyed animated conversation about the arts with Ian and Stephanie. I am sure you have seen Ian’s porcelein work at the Craft Connection. We are fortunate to have have a lot of restaurants in Nelson,

but Paul and Deb and their family and staff have ensured my weekends get off to a great start. I wish them well. After I went to Touchstones for the opening of the Flag Show and also Shawn Lamb’s retr�� rospective, I went over to � �� the Oxygen Gallery where they had a presentation �� of writers awards. I was especially touched by the young Trafalgar stu�� dent who wrote about the frustrations and the roller coaster of emotions that a SUBMITTED young teen faces. Nelson and Shawn Lamb share a laugh �� at the opening of A Visual Memoir at Touchstones on Friday, Nov. 27.

30th Annual Kootenay Boundary Exhibition – Personal Best

Now to February 28th, 2010 New this year, the regional art exhibition is online. Artists from all over the West Kootenays have submitted their Personal Best for you to experience. Traditionally, the Kootenay Boundary Regional exhibition has been an annual themed exhibition, hosted by a different community in

Drive If You Must runs circles around the competition by Julia Gillmor A new electro-acoustic sound has arrived in Nelson courtesy of Drive If You Must (DIYM), the musical culmination of local balladeers Sarah McGlynn and Rich Rabnett. Released in August ’09 by Ropeadope Records, their new album Circles, features McGlynn and Rabnett along with the talents of Kiyoshi Elkuf and Jeff Steele. DJ Adham Shaikh, Juno nominated composer, producer and sound designer also lends his signature production skills to the mix. DIYM presents a surprisingly sophisticated suite of songs. Anchored by the title track, the first to appear on the album,

“Circles”, introduces the albums electro-jazz fusion sound. One of the best tracks in the collection, “Circles” sets the tone and raises the bar for what is it to follow. In track 6, “Should Have Known Better”, this CD takes a definite detour from electronica, to a soul inflected rock ballad. DIYM lays down some funky base lines and saxaffected melodies, while in the chorus, McGlynn channels just a hint of Sass Jordan. DIYM pays plenty of homage to the acoustic roots of its musicians. However, “Don’t Count Me Out” tangents into an esoteric jam session, taking the listener on a slightly uncomfortable journey. Track 8, “Satisfy”, falls

back to the fusion stylings of slow deep grooves mixed with McGlynn’s sultry vocals. And in “We Belong”, DIYM tips their hat to Bossa where McGlynn shines in her strongest performance on the album. In their bio, the band claims to avoid the tedious use of conventional loops and an overly produced sound, and on that promise they definitely deliver. DIYM presents electroacoustic stylings that are polished and well produced. Ultimately, Circles is filled with great beats, smooth grooves and splendid jazz vocals. This holiday season, start new traditions that honor the importance of the season as well the health and wellness of your family. Remember that the warm feelings and distinct seasonal colours, smells and décor are what make holiday gatherings so special. This year serve up abundance by filling the holiday meal with rich colours and a beautiful array of seasonal vegetable dishes. For most families, turkey and stuffing are the season’s tradition. This year, pair the turkey with a whole lot of simple but delicious vegetable dishes. With all the rich colours and diverse flavours, no one will feel the need to drown the plate in gravy. Plan to offer a couple of marinated vegetable salads or a fresh green salad that you can make ahead for easy meal prep the day of the big meal. Keep the vegetables simple and aim for three or four different coloured dishes. Here are some ideas:
