News of the devastation in Haiti following an earthquake Jan. 12 prompted many locals to action last week. Kutenai Art Therapy Institute celebrates 15 years by Julia Gillmor Making art is therapeutic in and of itself. For the past 15 years, the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute has been sharing and teaching art therapy to individuals and families, professionals and students, in the Nelson community. Founded in 1994 by Monica Carpendale, at the time the sole local practitioner of art therapy in the area, she said it came about as a result of the professional community wanting to train in art therapy for their own practices. Carpendale is passionate about art therapy and its use in treating and healing trauma. “People are often told not to talk about trauma, but no one ever gets told not to
paint or draw about it. Art provides an opportunity to give expression to something that otherwise is often very difficult to describe in words.” By describing the art, it is possible to find metaphors that help bring feelings forward and aid in understanding them. Carpendale says, “If we bring more of our experiences in nature to a more self reflective place, we start to communicate about it, when our perception changes and things become conscious, then things really begin to change.” The school began with one studio classroom and seven full time students. Fifteen years later it has grown to two studio classrooms, seven local students five distance

students, and 10 more students in the process of completing their thesis. Offering a postgraduate, two-year diploma program, the Institute has gained provincial, national and international recognition and accreditation. In addition to being
a teaching facility, KATI also offers open house studio sessions on a drop in basis every Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These sessions are open to the community and provide support through therapy for children, adolescences and families. Admission
is by donation. KATI is also beginning a project with KLH to help provide support for elderly residents who are waiting for entry into long-term care facilities. Carpendale said the roughly calculated amount of free therapeutic service offered to the community through KATI, is in the ballpark of $100,000 per year. On Friday January 22, KATI is celebrating their 15th anniversary. They will be hosting an open house complete with refreshments, complemented with a book signing. Being a textbook, Carpendale joked that if she counted all the revisions of the spiral bound original, this would be considered it’s fourth edition. Events take place
from 5 to 8 p.m. Upcoming events planned for KATI include an Expressive Arts Therapy conference coming in May and February 18 at 7 p.m. there is a screening of the DVD, Angel with A Broken Wing. KATI is a non-profit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors and they are always grateful for new people wanting to get involved with the board. Interested community members can call the school for more information at 250-352-2264. The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute is located at 201 - 601 Front Street. They also maintain a website with course and admission information at www.kati. kics.bc.ca.

How is the youth supposed to get by?
The tragedy in Haiti We want to acknowledge the tragedy and crisis that exists in Haiti at this time. We commend the tireless work of all of the doctors, nurses, military and volunteers who have gone to Haiti during this terrible disaster and risked their own safety to help others. We also have to wonder though, if tragedy at such a massive scale could not have been avoided, or at least the damage lessened, had the world’s powers provided the Haitians with the means to create safe, reliable infrastructure before this awesome act of nature sent their cinder block homes crashing down upon them. Unfortunately, this tragedy has a local twist. 17 high school students and their adult chaperones voluntarily went to Haiti to help others less fortunate. This basic human nature is a reason for optimism in our world. More proof of these feelings of empathy is the number of people who have responded to this crisis

in Nelson and around the world, by donating money, time and items that are in short supply in Haiti, and in dire need. Nobody was coerced to donate. The motive comes out of a feeling for other peoples’ pain and suffering, and a desire to help out, even in some small way. We have 17 students and their adult chaperones who will be back in our protective care here in Nelson. They have seen and experienced things that we in our little safe bubble here, have no way to understand. They have gone through an experience of extreme danger and they cannot help but be affected by what they have gone through, not only emotionally but physiologically as well. We must welcome our international aid workers back to our community with safety and unconditional love. They surely will need time and support to deal with what they have gone through. We continue to pray for them and keep them in our hearts.
Dear Editor, Where is all the help for the youth? That is what I want to know. I grew up really poor and I have been struggling for years, and now with this so-called recession things have gotten even worse. I am 28 years old and I am a really hard worker and most importantly I want to work. In 2008 I was working as a prospector in the Slocan Valley from March to October. In 2009 I only had two weeks of work. I ended up broke, lost my home in May, and had to sleep in the back of my truck all summer. I applied for every job I could find to hire me. I finally started work for the city of Nelson in
the end of December but only got a few days of work because I only work when it snows. In January I worked five days, barely enough to get by. I am still homeless and trying to rent a house that allows pets. Turns out this is almost impossible. Rent is way way too high around here. What people don’t understand is that without a home it is even harder to keep a job and to have any faith in the system. What am I supposed to do? Welfare wont pay enough for rent, let alone food. I am even willing to move to any town where there is more work, but I need a job first, otherwise I will be in an even worse
situation. All the jobs in other towns I apply for don’t contact me back because I don’t already live there. So it makes me ask the question, what happened to BC/Canada? Is this the way they expect the youth to live? Homeless and broke and barely eating enough with no hope for the future? I have so many friends that are struggling just as much as me. Where is all the help from the government to make more jobs? I just can’t believe it has got this bad. I just can’t believe that theres no work for someone who wants to work. Herb Hyder Nelson

Redfish students celebrate GamesTown 2010 prize by Stephanie Taylor The students at Redfish School received a special treat this past week after being designated a GamesTown 2010 Spirit School. The students, who are kindergarten to grade 5, were awarded with a day filled with games and events, as well as a visit from the Olympic mascots Miga the Sea Bear, Quatchi the Sasquatch, and Sumi, the Thunderbird. “The day really showcased the excitement the kids have about the Olympics, and about being Canadian,” said Redfish principal Lori Fehr. “It
was amazing how excited the kids were.” The kids got to try out a ski machine, a hockey shootout, and pose for photos in a bobsled. There was a display of aboriginal culture featuring snowboards with beautiful, intricate artwork and a Wii kiosk where the kids could try sports games. They were also given a special test, which told the kids which Olympic sport they might excel at. But by far the favourite of the day were the mascots. “They just have to show up,” Fehr said. “The kids loved them. “They kept saying,
‘They’re like a bunch of big stuffies!’” Even the Strong Start program, which is for children 0 to 6 years of age, were included in the day and spent some time with Miga, Quatchi and Sumi. Redfish joined the GamesTown 2010 initiative in September as a Spirit School and made a pledge to be healthy and participate in Olympicthemed events. The students and adult volunteers were enthusiastic about the initiative and have lived up to their Spirit School status.

the health pages. Yoga by Donation will help Haitians in need Shanti Yoga Studio will hold Yoga by Donation classes every Saturday afternoon for the next month, with all proceeds going to shelter for Haiti. Shanti is helping fund the ShelterBox campaign for Haiti. The purchasing of Shelter Boxes ($1,000 each) is being organized through Rotary club in Nelson. This is one of the best donations we can make as the current estimate is that 1.5 million Haitians will need temporary homes, which may be used for a long time. Each ShelterBox is a large, rugged, green plastic container that holds a 10-person tent and a range of other equipment. Typical box contents could include: • Thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets • Waterproof ponchos and bin bags • A multi-fuel stove that can burn anything from diesel to old paint • Cooking pans, utensils, bowls and mugs • Water containers and water purification tablets • A basic tool kit – hammer, axe, saw, pliers, hoe head, trenching shovel, rope, etc. • A small, children’s pack containing drawing books,
crayons, pens etc. Once assembled, boxes will be banded and sealed ready for transit. They are also individually numbered so each box can be tracked and donors can know its final destination. Check out www.shelterbox.ca for more information. Shanti Yoga studio is asking everyone to come to these classes, tell you friends and bring them along. Forward this information and appeal to everyone. Donations can be any size, nothing is too small. Rotary Club of Nelson sent $1,000 for a The ShelterBox from Nelson club members. Shanti Yoga Studio is also committing $1,000. For the next four Saturdays from 2-4 pm there will be Community Yoga classes with all donation proceeds going to ShelterBoxes. Email everyone you know, and let them know that donations will be ongoing at the studio. Every class, everyday so that the goal can be reached. - submitted

Search for cultural ambassador The Cultural D e v e l o p m e n t Commission (CDC), on behalf of the City of Nelson, is currently inviting applications for the position of 2010’s Nelson Cultural Ambassador. This year’s category is the Visual Arts, and individual visual artists as well as visual arts organizations are encouraged to apply. The CDC established this honour in recognition of local individual artists, groups or collectives who have achieved a high standard of excellence in their artistic discipline and who are active not only in Nelson’s cultural community but extend their talents to other communities and countries. The Cultural Ambassador is expected to represent and promote the City of Nelson on their travels, increasing the visibility and cultural reputation of Nelson. In return, the Cultural Ambassador can use their official designation in their own promotional materials, programs
and fundraising. An Awards ceremony, presented by the CDC and attended by local media and arts organizations, will be held in February to announce the winner of this prestigious title. Nelson’s 2009 Cultural Ambassador was the youth choral group Corazón, under the direction of Allison Girvan. “Our designation as Nelson’s Cultural Ambassador led to a very positive reception by audiences” states Shannon Lythgoe, Corazón’s manager. “It encouraged our young performers to represent the City of Nelson while on tour and at home in a gratifying and significant way, and has been a boon to the group’s profile and sense of community.” The designation also proved particularly useful when Corazón showcased at Pacific Contact 2009, a conference mounted by the BC Touring Council - as a result of this, they were engaged to tour in a larger and more diverse
