News Seniors live the good life at Lake View Village by Julia Gillmor On Monday, January 11, Nelson’s newest seniors housing development opened its doors to residents. Lake View Village, a $14 million housing project at 1010 7th St., created by Golden Life Management and billed as independent living, offers 90 suites for seniors. Amenities include everything from a common dining area and lounge, to a library, fitness room and beauty salon. In addition, Lake View Village also offers residents prepared meals, house keeping services, recreational opportunities and a 24 hr staff to name but a few of the add-ons. The private suites with balconies range in price from $975 to $2575 per month and are available
on a month-to-month lease. Golden Life Management operates seniors housing throughout the Kootenays. It came about when founder and CEO of Golden Life, Endre Lillejord, was searching for housing options for his mother back in the 90’s. Finding a lack of opportunities for seniors that supported their choice to remain independent, he realized that he could make a difference and fill a much need gap. Partnered with Interior Health, BC Housing, Columbia Basin Trust and non-profit societies, Golden Life is helping to provide innovate housing for seniors. By far the most popular feedback Golden Life receives about its services is in regards to the chef prepared dining
experience, says Celeste Mullin, Spokesperson for Golden Life Management. “Individuals can come together in that community and dine as a large family, enjoy a laugh and a joke. It’s like having family around,” she says. Transportation in the form of a shuttle bus is also a key feature. Mullin adds, “At some point in your life there are things that you don’t want to do anymore or you can’t do any more and we happen to have the support systems there so people can go out and do the things they enjoy doing.” There is also plenty in the way of activities and recreation. Programs offered are based directly on the desires of the people who are living in the building. Gardening clubs, poetry, even writing
and launching their own book, are some of the activities in which residents have chosen to participate in the past. Lake View Village also offers a 24-hour emergency monitoring system. Although they do not offer personal care onsite it can be contracted through a scheduled program. Mullin says, “It’s all about supporting our residents independence as long as possible.” A limited number of suites are still available at Lake View Village. An open house is being held on Saturday February 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with tours through the building. For more information contact Golden Life Management at 250.352.0051 or visit www. goldenlifemanagement.ca.

Transition Town: helping us get there from here How do we get from here to there? We change our attitude. Instead of falling into despair at the declining condition of the earth’s biosphere, we view ourselves as capable of making a positive change at a local level, which can actually begin to fix the problem. Under these optics, the challenges of the future are issues which we can joyfully surmount together. We focus on solutions, which we take responsibility for implementing. Our national government and the international community are not prepared to address the urgent need to shift away from dependence on fossil fuels to a sustainable paradigm. Rather than hoping that this will occur, we can initiate change at a local level so that we can create greater community resilience. We think collaboratively and honour each other’s diverse perspectives. To this extent, the old model of individual competition in an overall framework of scarcity no longer serves us. At the same time, shaming of those people who don’t want to change is completely pointless and merely serves to entrench people in their existing views. We demonstrate that the future
under the new paradigm, is not only better for the planet, but also provides the opportunity for a richer and more fulfilling human experience. To this end, we “Imagine” a future to which we can joyfully proceed. We also encourage a fascinating and rich culture within our own community. We consider every sector of society as part of a systemic whole. This includes an examination of our values both individually and collectively. We become acute observers of the natural world and try to mimic the wisdom of nature in designing solutions. In this regard, the writings on permaculture not only provide a template for enhanced local food production but also provide a means of sequestering vast amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, while improving the quality of soil. We shift to a locally based currency, so that we can encourage the development of skills and production of goods on a local level. This not only provides for a richer community in terms of its capacities, but it also weans us from dependence on fragile and destructive global distribution systems. You can be a part of the solution.
Transition Town and the Express are featuring an opinion contest. What can we do now and what can we do in the near future? Let’s motivate people to action. Your opinion piece does not need to include facts it can be pure opinion or be based on imagination. We want to hear from everyone, whether it be a professional or grade school students. Everyone knows a piece of the solution. Interested participants will write a 300 – 500 word opinion or editorial in which they interpret the notion of Nelson in ‘transition’, or in which they envision a positive Nelson of the near future (2030). Deadline for entry forms for this competition is February 12th by hard copy, fax or email directly to The Express office. This competition is judged by The Express. Prizes include: $150 First Prize; $100 Second Prize; and $50 Third Prize. Throughout the winter and early spring, publication of selected Opinion pieces will appear in The Express. The winner will be asked to speak on the evening of May 14th at the Prestige to coincide with the Transition Nelson Expo. - submitted
Heart and Stroke Month reminds of the importance of a CT Scanner Shakespeare said, “In spring, a young man’s fancy turns to love.” In our climate, Valentine’s Day precedes spring by a fortnight or more, but the celebrations on that day that focus on romantic love, symbolized by the heart, made February the logical choice for education and fund-raising by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Knowing the signs of a heart attack or a stroke becomes more important as we get older. More education is focused on the fact that heart attacks in women often present symptoms other than the classic pain down the
left arm that is common among men. To me, this means that early treatment for heart attacks among women is increasing. Diagnosis of the type of stroke that has occurred will determine the doctor’s method of treatment. There is a limited window of opportunity for making that decision before some irreversible damage occurs. Does the patient have a clot, or is the stroke the result of a bleed? An untutored layman can grasp the concept that the treatments for the two causes are mutually exclusive. That’s one very important reason that
Been Thinking About
George Millar
Nelsonites need to have a CT Scanner available locally. Those who argue that the money would be better spent on lifestyle education surely understand that value-judgement education has always been less successful than
the teaching of “the three r’s.” The argument that government should be providing this aspect of healthcare is appealing, but not particularly valid, given the track record of the Campbell government in downloading the cost of all kinds of services. One component of the argument is that the more we take local responsibility for things of this sort, the more governments of all stripes expect that to happen. That’s a sad fact, but governments don’t do the right thing just because we demand it. We need to support the CT Scanner drive.
George Millar is a long-time resident of the West Kootenay. Been Thinking About is an exploration of events and organizations in the region, seen from a senior’s perspective.

Kitchen Table gives threads a home Columbia Basin Culture Tour call for entries
by Stephanie Taylor Donations deemed as unsellable in the past will now be put to good use at the WIN Store thanks to a project called Kitchen Table Arts. The project is essentially an art studio inside the WIN store at 721-A Front St. where crafters and artists can meet, talk, share ideas, and find free fabric supplies for their art projects. “The volunteers at the WIN store were concerned about what they were throwing away,” said Janis TimmBottos, the Kitchen Table project’s new fabric reclamation coordinator. “With this project we are recycling materials and providing the crafters and artists in the community with a space and supplies, which they might not otherwise have access to.” Instead of sending clothes that are in really bad shape to the dump, the scraps of old t-shirts, jeans, wool, and any fabric can be recycled into art. The Kitchen Table Project sorts through the unsaleable items, sorts them into like fabrics, and lets the participants take what they’d like to make anything from denim blankets to tshirt grocery bags. It’s a place for people to share ideas, help each other learn new skills and gain expertise. “It’s a very folk art way of learning,” Timm-Bottos said. Right now there are no costs for the artists, but they are asked to share samples of their finished projects so others can learn from them. The project received a big hand from the Nelson & District Credit Union, who approved the Kitchen Table Project’s grant application for $2,500. “The project resonated well with us,” said Tom Atkins, Marketing and Relationship Development Manager at the NDCU.
STEPHANIE TAYLOR
Ashley (right) gets her first sewing lesson from Grace (left) at the Kitchen Table. In addition to using materials destined for the landfill, the program allows crafters to share skills and ideas.
“It involves recycling, teaching job skills, and attracts youth. It was a no-brainer.” The project is still at the early stages and TimmBottos is already seeing a great turnout and a lot of enthusiasm for the project. “I’ve never met a crafter who doesn’t share ideas.” To participate in the Kitchen Table Arts project or to learn more, contact the WIN Store at 250-505-5444.
Registrations are currently being accepted for artists/venues in the Columbia Basin to participate in the Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT). The CBCT is a two day celebration of culture taking place August 14-15, 2010. The CBCT is a self guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general public. Full colour tour directories will be available free of charge to the public as a guide to visit your studio, exhibition, museum, art gallery, cultural center or heritage site throughout the Columbia Basin during this special weekend event. Participating as a venue allows you to really connect with locals, develop a wider audience, educate the public about what you do, market your activities, and attract visitors to your community.
The CBCT allows visitors to meet the participants “behind the scenes” and allows them to visit artists studios that may not regularly be open to the public, purchase works directly from the artists, visit art galleries, museums and cultural centres to view special interpretive displays, demonstrations or performances. The final registration date is Friday, March 19 but there are savings to those who register by Friday, Feb. 26. The registration fee includes inclusion in printed directory, web page profile, placement on on-line interactive map, event signage, province wide promotional campaign. For information or to register visit www. cbculturetour.com. For more information call CKCA at 1-250-5055505 or toll free at 1-877505-7355. - submitted

Self Design students experiencing Italia
Nine Self Design students from Nelson and Kaslo are off to a two-week excursion to Italy to learn about the culture, visit monuments and historical sites and visit the Italian exchange students they hosted back in September. The students raised money for the trip from a successful Fair Trade for Peace market they held, as well as from grants. The Nelson and District Credit Union gave them a $1,000 grant, provided they learn about successful cooperatives in Italy and present what they learned when they get home in a few weeks.

The wheels on the bus... How can a crappy 10year-old bus be frontpage news? It’s frontpage news because it’s still here and because it’s still something that needs to be dealt with. It was embarrassing to begin with, a new bus posing as a heritage vehicle. A verified heritage town doesn’t need to invest in the façade of being old, especially with the heritage tram that runs from the Prestige Hotel to Lakeside Park. It’s all very easy for us to criticize things that have past. At the same time, we need to use this lesson to plan for our future. Our community does not have enough money to be frivols in its expenditures and it’s obvious that our city’s
requirements have more to do with replacing our infrastructure and updating what is old, rather than trying to make things that are new appear old. As a community we can avoid making poor financial decisions by having a clear set of priorities for the future. This heritage bus is an asset that the city owns, although it’s not doing much good at present. Perhaps one of our readers could suggest to the city how they may recoup as much as possible, the quarter million dollars initially spent on the bus. Perhaps, at the very least, the heritage bus has afforded us the opportunity to learn a lesson or two.

Alex Atamanenko, MP BC Southern Interior Canada’s watchdog for federal spending recently issued his report and the news was definitely not upbeat. Coming off a budget that racked up Canada’s biggest deficit ever, many are aware there will be difficult times ahead. What they may have forgotten is how thin the line between surplus and deficit was before we engaged in last year’s unprecedented stimulus funding. Kevin Page, the Parliamentary Budget Officer, warned of this last year. He claimed that Canada had already entered a structural deficit while the Conservatives were claiming minute surpluses. A structural deficit is a deficit that exists when the economy is performing at its potential. How did we get in this position? Quite simply, the appetite for tax breaks and the wrong-headed belief that reduced taxes would help the economy grow. The market meltdown made all investors nervous at best and wiped out many gains the average person had made through investment tools such as RRSPs. The jobs lost have further reduced
our fiscal capacity as tax revenues dried up and social spending increased. The economic crisis has exposed serious inadequacies in Canada’s retirement savings system. Faced with the collapse of many workplace pension plans and private savings the government’s response has been to tell Canadians to “save more”. This is the wrong advice. The government should take $700 million (less than half of the proposed corporate tax cuts) and invested it into reforming Canada’s retirement savings system thus helping to eliminate seniors’ poverty. A further step in the right direction would be a doubling of CPP benefits from about $907/month to almost over $1,800/month. The cost would be an additional 2.5% of wages (matched by employers). This is less than what we pay for private savings plans. No one likes taxes and it is easy to rally against them, but taxes pave roads and put defibrillators in hospitals; they educate our children and defend our country. Like it or not, we need some form of taxation. That is
where our current government has failed us miserably. They have made tax an evil word and run successful campaigns that have not helped the bottom line in most households. A 2% reduction in the GST might save a few pennies but costs dearly in the end. We are now dealing with reduced capacity and will have a structural deficit of 18.9 billion dollars by 2013 according to Kevin Page. Compounding the problem is Canada’s aging population. The baby boomers that are moving from work to retirement will change the balance sheet irrevocably and Canada has not prepared for this. The finance Minister is still clinging to the belief that tax cuts will stimulate the economy. As we enter into pre-budget consultations, with Parliament closed and the Harper government in hiding, it will be difficult to make this case before next year’s budget is written. Every year we refuse to look at the looming fiscal crisis is a year lost and an abandonment of the hard work done to build this country.

Local production company PilotcoPilot finally produces real play Fridays and Saturdays throughout Feb., 8 p.m. at Self Deisign High Common Room, 402 Victoria St. Pilotcopilot, the theatre company responsible for the Cromoli Brothers and the Hello Baby! Lecture Series, is producing a real play. The Wedding Pool, written by Amiel Gladstone, will be running every Friday and Saturday in February. Lucas Myers was approached by Heather Shippit, known for her direction of the Capitol Theatre’s Summer Musicals Willy Wonka and Les Miserable.
“Heather wanted to direct something that was a little smaller in scale, more intimate and with professional actors. I have been wanting to expand PilotcoPilot beyond just producing my own work and I was familiar with the play, so I knew it would work really well Nelson,” said Myers. The play is about three single thirtysomething friends that form a bet to see who gets married first. After one of the friends starts a new relationship, complications ensue. Joining Myers onstage will be Brahm Taylor (Loco BIBO
Phantasmo) and Jocelyn Carver (Foreplay) as well as Nelson newcomer Lindsay Clague who will also be providing choreography for the show. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Eddy Music and at the door. For more information and specific show dates, go to pilotcopilot.com. Anemia Uncovered: Part 1 In the last year, four friends have discovered they have iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia, the most common type of anemia, occurs when the blood becomes deficient in iron-containing red blood cells. These blood cells are important as they transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body. One friend, a biathlete, developed extreme fatigue, shortness of breath and decreased physical performance. Another, a breastfeeding mom with three children kept getting colds due to decreased immune function. While the symptoms of anemia vary with each person, some early signs include loss of appetite, constipation and irritability. Once anemia is established, symptoms such as depression, dizziness, fatigue, pallor, cold extremities, mouth sores, excessive menstrual blood loss, learning disabilities, impaired immune function, decreased energy levels and physical performance or lack of a monthly period may arise. The symptoms of anemia, such as extreme fatigue, reflect a lack of oxygen being delivered to tissues and a buildup of carbon dioxide. Diagnosis is dependent

Exploring Health
Jen Cherwaty
on a blood test and evaluation by a medical doctor (MD) or naturopath doctor (ND) to uncover the underlying cause for anemia. Research shows that Serum ferritin is the best lab test for determining body iron stores. Iron deficiency may be caused by increased iron requirement during growth spurts, pregnancy or breastfeeding, decreased dietary intake which is common in vegetarians, diminished absorption (common in the elderly) and/or blood loss due to excess menstrual bleeding, peptic ulcers or hemorrhoids. Each friend sought help from different health practitioners. One woman took her advice from her MD while another went to her ND. A third received treatments from her Chinese Medicine Practitioner and the fourth, a man, went to his nutritionist. Read more about their treatments in the next column.
Jen Cherewaty, BSc., RTCMP improves your health with acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine and yoga. Information in the Exploring Health column is for education only. Single and looking for love How do we create room for new relationships? Making space for a new loved one in our lives might mean making more space in our homes. Decluttering our home removes negative energy and improves our moods, making us more attractive and easy to be around. A home says a lot about a person; what is your home saying to the person you are trying to attract? Clutter not only negatively affects our relationships with others, but it also affects our relationship with ourselves. Living with clutter is like driving through fog. It’s hard to see the road ahead and it’s even harder for others to find us. As humans we feel like our stuff represents who we are and at times
Restoring Order
Jen Heale
use it to attract others. Unfortunately when our stuff turns to clutter it takes away from who we are. Think of clutter as a thief; it not only robs you of your time and energy, but also takes the focus away from you. It’s hard to compete with clutter; it demands attention and complicates any relationship. Face it -- clutter is not attractive! A prospective partner may see no room for himself or herself in your life;
your life is already too crowded. The best way to move on is to leave the past behind, instead of trying to live in it. Let’s face it: if you’re really looking for love, having a relationship with another person is more important than a relationship with your objects. Yes, letting go and decluttering our lives can be exhausting in the short term, but at the same time, it is the best way to feel rejuvenated. First, become conscious of how clutter affects your relationships. Remember there is mental, emotional, and physical clutter. Second, create a realistic plan and goal. Third, start decluttering. Good luck on finding that special someone!
