Money granted for youth driven projects by Julia Gillmor Flying under the wing of the Osprey Community Foundation, the Osprey Youth Council is taking measures to address issues that concern youth. A selfdirected organization that is conducting a “By youth for youth” grant program, The Osprey Youth Council is providing a way for young people to be leaders in improving their community. After coming together in 2009, the first step taken by the council was to highlight the important issues facing young people, by conducting a survey of youth in the area. Using the well-known social media network of Facebook, the council created a group page, which teens could join and answer survey ques-

tions. Eli Zibin, a grade 12 student at LVR and a member of the council spoke about the survey, “ We conducted a survey of youth to find out what they felt were the biggest priorities facing them and what they felt we should help them focus on.” Zibin said that the results were not a big surprise, “The survey showed that youth sexual health concerns and addressing drug and alcohol abuse were the two most prominent issues.” Based is on the findings, the Youth Council is offering a grant funding program that will place precedence on applications that deal with these issues. Citizen Survey: housing a concern for residents by Chris Oke The results of the 2009 Citizen Survey are in: Nelson citizens are happy with their city council. There were, however a few areas that Nelson residents singled out as needing room for improvement, including the housing challenges facing the community. Certain groups, such as those with children or those in need of housing, may not have been well represented. “My concern right now is that the affordable housing net has been spread so broadly that we’re not paying attention to the people who actually need housing,” Mayor John Dooley said. “Because this survey only went out to known addresses, I’m not sure we were capturing the people truly in need of housing.” Respondents made it clear that they would like to see more affordable housing in the city. While its difficult for

council to lower housing and rental prices, the Golden Life retirement community project and dorm renovations at Selkirk college will free up a few affordable housing units for seniors and students, the Mayor pointed out. The largest age group to respond to the survey was those between 55 and 64. “Generally speaking, the younger groups don’t tend to answer these things,” said Dooley, “so there’s no question that we could be missing some feedback from younger people. But having said that, the opportunity was there for them to fill out the survey and we would love to hear from them on an ongoing basis.” Despite this lack of young voter feedback, the information generated from the survey is still valid, the Mayor added. “Just because you have one particular age group more represented than another doesn’t mean

you’re getting the wrong results.” This is the first citizen survey that Nelson has conducted in many years.

My concern right now is that the affordable housing net has been spread so broadly that we’re not paying attention to the people who actually need housing, John Dooley, Nelson Mayor The mayor would like to see this type of information gathering done more often, even though

it was a large project for the city and data entry was time consuming. “It’s important to know and it could be more costly not to know,” said Dooley. “Now that we’ve done one, we understand exactly how it works and our second kick at this will be more efficient.” Overall, respondents ranked the quality of life in Nelson 4.4 out of 5. “The results we got back clearly indicated that we were following the right path,” Dooley said. “It’s always good to know that you are actually taking the community in the right direction.” The results from the 2009 survey will eventually be placed on the city website. Until then, anyone that would like to see the highlights is encouraged to contact city hall. A full report on the survey will be presented to council at the city council meeting on Monday, Feb. 22.

The modern controversy, pt.1 My first memory of the Canadian reaction to Olympic success by our country’s athletes was in 1948, when Barbara Ann Scott won gold in figure skating. And I recall the controversy created when, upon hearing that Scott was given a car as a reward for her efforts, Avery Brundage, President of the International Olympic Association ordered Scott to return the car or be stripped of her medal. During that era, frequent reports claimed that Soviet competitors at international sporting events were usually military personnel whose job description coincided with their athletic training requirements. The “uneven playing field”

controversy lasted until 1988, when the IOC lifted the ban on professionals competing. These days the controversy has been the increasing cost to the host of the Games. The Athens Games in 1896 were underwritten by wealthy Greeks from around the world. Those first modern Games were successful

in terms of competitors, spectators, and finances. But the 1920 Antwerp Games cost 625,000 francs. Four years later, the first Winter Games in Chamonix, France, cost two million francs. Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau cemented his place in Olympic lore with his statement that, “the Montreal Olympics can no more have a deficit than a man can have a baby.” Montreal taxpayers finished paying the $1.5 billion debt in 2006, thirty years later. In 2008, B.C.’s Auditor General, Arn van Iersel predicted that the Vancouver Games would reach a deficit of $2.5 billion, not the $600 million budgeted for.

Whooping cough outbreak Briefly IHA urging parents to get their young children vaccinated

by Stephanie Taylor The Interior Health Authority is encouraging parents of young children and infants to get their children vaccinated for pertussis, or Whooping Cough, after 19 cases were reported in the Kootenay Boundary area. Nelson is on the list of communities with at least one reported case, which also includes Slocan, Castlegar and Fruitvale. All of the cases have been reported in the last eight weeks. Before the current outbreak, there had only been three cases reported in the last two years. Except for one, all of the children who have fallen ill had not been vaccinated. “All parents of unimmunized infants and young children need to take action,” said Dr. Rob

Parker, Medical Health Officer with the IHA. “[The acellular vaccine] is a safe and effective vaccine. We owe it to our kids.” The IHA is also fasttracking the immunization schedule for infants. Instead of waiting until the child is two months old, infants will be receiving the first dose at six weeks. Parents of children who have started the vaccination schedule but are behind on their follow-up are being contacted and asked to make an appointment as soon as possible. “We need to give our children as much protection as possible,” Parker said. He added that unimmunized children pose a risk to themselves, and also to other kids. No vaccination clinics are scheduled at this time, so parents wishing to get

their children vaccinated can make an appointment with their family doctor or visit a clinic to receive the treatment. According to IHA, Kootenay Boundary has the lowest child immunization rate in the coverage area, with only 69 per cent of infants and toddlers being fully immunized with a Whooping Cough vaccine by the age of two. Parker suggested that the low rate may be due to the local culture. “A lot of parents in the area take a more natural approach to their health care,” he said. Parker also noted that there have also been a lot of myths surrounding the safety of vaccinations that may be dissuading parents from getting their children vaccinated. Whooping Cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial

disease of the lungs, nose and throat that is highly contagious and can be spread through coughing or sneezing. Initial symptoms are similar to those of a common cold with a low fever and mild cough. Within one to two weeks, coughing fits develop into severe, sometimes debilitating spells. Pregnant women in their third trimester, as well as infants under 12 months are at greatest risk of contracting the disease. All of the cases reported in the Kootenay Boundary area have been of children of pre-school and grade school age. “Get the facts, research the disease and the vaccine, and make an informed decision,” urges Parker. Speak with a medical professional or find more information at www. immunizebc.ca.

Developers win gold

Editorial The survey says The survey that the city has created is a long-awaited necessity and the city must be thanked fo taking a first step toward a more open and democratic government. We want a government that responds more to the wishes of its citizenry than it does to its own whims. In order to do this effectively, the cititzens’ views must be heard loud and clear by the government. The survey should be done regularly, and with some clear guidelines. An opinion survey should be done at least once a year, and probably twice a year. It should be done by a professional survey institution so the survey results have scientific validity. A survey should be able to say that it is “valid +/-

5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.” We cannot attach any validity to the one conducted by the city. It would be ideal if in 20 years from now the electorate could participate in many ongoing surveys so that our representatives were truly our servants and could get a real understanding of what the voters want. In the meantime, the survey conducted by the city should be looked upon with broad strokes. It shows us direction in which to search for more information and it shows us that there is interest in the community. We need to address how we can make sure that our surveys represent our communities both men and women, young and old, left, right and independent.

Dear Editor, The Liberals said the Olympics would cost $600 million and would have a $1.6 billion return. They’re now over $6 billion, the equivalent of one third of B.C.’s yearly tax revenue. We’ve lost over 25,000 jobs in two years. We’ve had the highest child-poverty rate five years running. We’ve doubled the homelessness rate in B.C. to over 10,000 people, one of whom dies every 12 days. We could

have purchased a $550,000 home for every one of these homeless people. Instead, we get a ski jump and speed skating oval, and a two-week party that seems more about steroid masking and money, than about human excellence. The liberals pass Draconian laws legalizing gentrification, and outlawing free speech. They rob us of $4.4 billion, and we should just be polite? The Olympics could be used to foster internation-

al understanding, a movement away from shooting and killing tens of thousands of innocent Afghani civilians, who will continue to be killed during these games. Instead, we advertise for Coca-Cola, waste vast amounts of money, and sacrifice our most vulnerable, in order to benefit a few wealthy developers. Ted Campeau Winlaw

Street Talk What is your idea of a bad Valentine’s Day gift?

Olympic torch protesters went at it all wrong Dear Editor, What is happening to human reason? Get a whipping boy and away goes reason. This was shown by the amount of fluff that has shown up in the so called “Olympic Protest”. Please, protesters, try to be effective with your efforts. As a radical from the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s thru to the 2000’s, I feel that I can honestly say that you totally missed your mark in the feeble attempt in protesting the flame. (And then whined about being protested yourself). Be aware that you served no jail time for your actions or faced any military action as you would have in some other countries. Now to the issues of your protest, many that I do agree with such as

cuts in education, health care, housing and social services. If you had any background or done any homework, then you would have seen that they were all being cut back in the 80’s when I arrived here. Governments ravaged our government offices and left them empty. Sucessive Liberal governments have totally cut health care at our area hospitals, pillaging our social services and education continually. So you choose to say that the flame is the reason? Open your eyes people and see that this was happening before and will continue to happen as long as you don’t vote or vote to keep a provincial government in power that is lining it pockets with raises and bonuses for

performance while ruining or selling our government assets. It has been shown in the past that true protesting is most effective at the source. In this case the source is in Victoria at Parliament. Being there to protest, organizing to write letters, camping on the lawn, disrupting the meals of the fat cats, repeatedly going to their offices and asking the real questions is a bit of what effective protesters do. The general protester has bought the unofficial line that the Olympics are to blame for all our ills. Yesh, I did enjoy the flame and will enjoy the Olympics! RJ Warren Nelson

Ballet Jörgen Canada’s Cinderella

Just in time for Valentines the Capitol Theatre Season Series presents Ballet Jörgen Canada’s full length classic, Cinderella. This ballet, choreographed by Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen is an innovative take on the classic fairy tale. Jörgen’s choreography takes us through the misfortunes and fortunes of Cinderella and her stepsisters. Cinderella is tormented by her sisters until her life is changed by the appearance of an old woman, a seed and magical fairies. When Cinderella wins the hand of her prince, her stepsisters find their world turned upside down. Framing the action are sets by Glenn Davidson that create a fantastical environment based on the idea of the natural world reclaiming manmade structures. Costume designs by Robert Doyle playfully echo each character’s personality. Tickets for Cinderella can be purchased by phone by calling 250352-6363 or you can buy online at www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca. Tickets are $30 for adults and $24 for fulltime students. The Capitol Kids Series

Briefly Art Therapy Double Feature Film Night Hosted by the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute Association Thursday, Feb. 18, 7-9 p.m. at the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute Studio, 601-E Front St. (ground floor entrance, wheelchair accessible) The Kutenai Art Therapy Institute Executive Director Monica Carpendale has created two films about art therapy and will be showing them to the public next Thursday. The first, An Angel with a Broken Wing, is a 50minute film about the use and value of art therapy for a woman healing from chronic post-traumatic stress disorder. The second, The Art of Lorraine Beninger: Personal Maps and Collage Constructions, is a 30minute film about a woman with multiple handicaps who used art therapy as a means of expressing her inner thoughts and feelings in a symbolic and emotional way.

If this is a common scenario at your workplace, you may want to take a few steps to help more fruit and veggies arrive in the staffroom. Nelsonites giving globally O’Neill family headed to Nepal with gifts from community

Brian and Chris O’Neill, along with their two children, are in the last stages of perparation before heading on their trip to the Tsum Valley region of Nepal. Thanks to the generousity of the Nelson community and from those as far away as the Yukon and Ontario, they will be bringing withh them over 120 bags of much-needed items to share with the Nepalese families in the Tsum region. “Lots of people thought it was a good idea and were happy to help,” saud Brian O’Neill. “It was surprising how much support we’ve gotten.” The O’Neills are just about at the maximum number of bags they can carry with them as they travel on their 14-day hike through the mountain, but if people

are still intetested in contributing the O’Neills say there is always a need for cash, which will be distributed to a number of monestaries, schools and organizations such as the Tsum Welfare Fund. “We have been in touch with some people from there, and they are thrilled,” said Chris O’Neill, Brian’s wife. “They’re just going through a really rough time right now” In addition to the political instability in the region, 90 per cent of the crops in the Uppeer Tsum failed due to drought last year, she explained. The O’Neill’s are leaving on Tuesday, Feb. 16. To follow their progress visit their blog at www.awarenessnepal2010.blogspot.com. To donate email tonepal@live.com.

Nelson family taking donations to Nicaraguan children

This spring break the Graeme Family will be heading to Nicaragua and hope to make a difference to the community they will be visiting while they are there, a tiny fishing community called Jiquilillio. The Graeme family is focusing on donations for the school children in the community. Sports gear such as soccer balls and baseball mitts is greatly appreciated by these kids, as well as resources to help with learning English, school sup-

plies, sewing supplies, or cash donations, which help to sponsor a weekly school lunch program. The Graemes hope to take good used gear from Nelson to the Jiquilillo children, along with any other donations the community here would like to share. To donate supplies for the Graemes to deliver in March, call Alison at 352-2252. Supplies need to be packed by Monday, March 1.
