They’re asking the community to help save the regional hospital’s surgical care by writing to its MLA and Health Board member to demand no further cuts. Otherwise, the system could fail, said De Greef, and you may have to travel to Kelowna or Vancouver for surgery. “We’re fighting for the people, we’re not doing this for ourselves,” he said. “We can always find a job somewhere else.”

Mint is a breath of fresh air Elder Abuse Prevention Project by Julia Gillmor Morty Mint of Mint Agency knows the business of publishing. He’s been in it for over 40 years. A transplant from the New York’s publishing industry, he came to Nelson to be close to family and now spends time brokering relationships between publishers and writers. The founding of Mint Agency reads a bit like a novel. In a chance encounter, local author Anne DeGrace met Mint when he dropped by the Nelson Municipal Library one fateful afternoon. Following their meeting, DeGrace googled Mint to find out if he was who he said he was, and then called him. And the rest, is history. Verna Relkoff, editor on DeGrace’s novels was brought into the mix and Mint Agency was born. Mint’s footprint in the industry is a large one. He has been responsible for distribution and sales of The Guinness Book of World Records and Ripley’s Believe it of Not. He was also President of Penguin Group Canada and the US. Relkoff deals with more literary matters while Mint handles the business side. With a BFA in Creative Writing paired with an MFA in Education, Relkoff taught writing for many years. She was a former instructor at KSA and founding member of Oxygen Art Centre. She has now turned her focus towards

editing manuscripts. To cut her teeth in the biz and obtain a greater understanding of the publishing industry, Mint arranged for Relkoff to go to Manhattan and intern at Writers House, one of the most influential publishing agencies in the US. Relkoff got the opportunity to work with other literary agents. “As an intern you’re expected to read manuscripts, write a critique and offer an agent an opinion. A lot are well known authors and their books are in utero,” Relkoff confides, “I know editing well, so that wasn’t intimidating, but a lot of the time I was answering the phone to very famous authors, which was quite exciting.” Mint Agency is interested in building a solid base of Canadian writers. “This part of BC needs what were doing, there’s such a strong cultural base here.” Many writers the agency represents are beginning writers.

Opinions & Letters Funding cuts unacceptable to local surgeons
Editorial Join together for better healthcare The surgeons and anesthetists at Trail Hospital are so upset with cuts to healthcare in our regional community that they have chosen to go public with their concerns. We must take this public stand as they intend; a caution of a potential healthcare emergency in our community. While Nelson’s Kootenay Lake Hospital is getting much needed renovations, healthcare continues to face serious cuts. For many years, the tricommunities of Nelson, Trail and Castlegar have seen ourselves as competitors. Whether it was over where our regional hospital should be located or as longtime traditional hockey rivals. The real message here is that healthcare is not a municipality-bymunicipality issue, it is a regional issue. By it’s
actions, the provincial government helped to create an aura of competitiveness surrounding our healthcare issues. Where would the ICU be located? Where would maternity be located? Our communities fought over issues that should never be fought over. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital staff and doctors are lacking resources to be effectively treating the local regional community. It’s time to take a new look at interior health services. There must be adjustments to criteria when dealing with rurally populated, mountainous demographics. The communities of Nelson, Trail and Castlegar, with the communities they service must come together and present a common front for healthcare.

Dear Editor, It is with great regret that the department of surgery must submit this letter. We strongly believe that the public has a right to know what is happening to their surgical services at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, Trail. We are a group of highly skilled, specialist surgeons and anesthetists who have been providing service to the population of the West Kootenay Boundary region and beyond for many years. It is unacceptable that Interior Health now wishes to deny you access to this service by effectively closing 1 / 4 of your operating rooms at KBRH Trail. Of even greater concern to us is the proposed cuts to OR nursing positions. It has taken years to recruit and train this extremely dedicated, compassionate and highly skilled group of professionals who have decided to make KBRH Trail their home. These nurses are a scarce commodity and we are extremely fortunate to have them available 24/7. These valuable nurses are
the foundation of our surgical health care team. It is unacceptable that Interior Health no longer values their service. Interior Health will argue that this is about saving more money in a tight budgetary time. Hogwash! The surgical team after consultation with IH has essentially saved the $350 000 they demanded. This was accomplished by carefully avoiding surgery during overtime hours. In addition we have cooperated with IH and extended our holiday closures, only performing emergency surgery during this time. This means of course that you as a patient will wait even longer for your elective operation. Please believe your front line health care workers when they tell you that KBRH has been underfunded for years, it is Interior Health that cannot seem to get their funding priorities right. So if this isn’t about the money, what is the motivation behind Interior Health’s proposed cuts. This is a good question. The department of sur-
gery believes that these cuts (closing operating rooms and eliminating nursing positions) represents yet another direct reduction to your access to surgical care. We as a department believe that your health has already been impacted before these additional cuts are taken in to consideration. We have met with IH on numerous occasions and frankly they have failed to understand our concerns. We as a department of surgery believe that a critical line has been crossed with the proposed closure of our operating rooms and the associated OR nursing cuts. It is our opinion that a further deterioration in surgical service is entirely avoidable and unnecessary. However if Interior Health chooses to further compromise your surgical care, we believe that we will no longer have the capacity and manpower to safely maintain a quality regional surgical service. The surgeons and anesthetists KBRH Trail

It will be nice when we get the CT scanner, but I wish the hospital here was utilized more because it’s a good hospital. Irma Pedersen, Balfour
Protesters have done their homework Dear Editor, I am writing in response to a letter published in the Feb. 10 issue of the Express, in which RJ Warren criticized the ‘lack of reason’ in the ‘feeble’ protestors at the torch rally; that we [had not had] ‘any background or done any homework’. Our homework is that the minimum wage in BC has been frozen at eight bucks an hour since 2001 and the local homeless shelter is full every night. Our background is that we give a damn.
The torch rally was specifically put on as a peaceful protest. Its straightforward message contrasted the excess of the VANOC show and made people think, as we heard from several spectators at the time and in days to come. We were also interviewed by many media sources. You say you will enjoy watching the Olympics. Will you also enjoy the knowledge that in the last few months, five more lowcost apartment buildings in the downtown East Side of
Vancouver closed or issued eviction notices? Another 180 units gone. I bet the Fox network won’t show the CF-18 fighter jets flying overhead, part of the $1 billion spent on security. Since you self-identify as a ‘radical since the 60s’ I will leave you with this Raymond Williams quote: “To be truly radical is to make hope possible rather than despair convincing.” Su Donovaro Nelson
Will the citizen survey do any real good? The city’s recent random poll of citizen opinion was a welcome effort to input. Will it guide actions? People don’t change their minds only because of information and facts. Our mayor and council have their prejudices, biases, ideals and cherished beliefs. What can push them in directions
contrary to their political leanings? (For example, what would make them embrace affordable housing as a priority, over solid streets or keeping development costs low?) Neuroscience has discovered, in opinion-and-brain connections, one part of the brain accepts info that agrees with pre-existent
Letters to the editor We encourage our readers to write to us. Please address letters meant for publication to the editor. We do not accept open letters. Letters must be short (200 words maximum) and to the point. We reserve the right to edit letters, and the decision to publish or not to publish is completely at the discretion of the editor and publisher. Originals will not be returned to the writer and the Express will store the original in its files.
Commentaries can be longer (500 words maximum) and are more in-depth than letters. If you wish to write a commentary, please first contact the editor. All letters and commentaries must be signed and include your name, address and phone number. Only your name and community you live in will be published. We will not print “name withheld” letters. Opinions in the paper are not necessarily those of the Express or its advertisers.

More services need to be returned to Nelson, such as surgery, which would cut down on the number of ambulance trips from here to Trail. Ken Merritt, Balfour

Sugar and spice: Cheesecake burlesque by Stephanie Taylor In 2006, a group of friends in Victoria thought it would be fun to have a burlesque theme birthday party. The group learned from a seasoned burlesque professional the history of burlesque, the art of twirling pasties, and some basic choreography. At their first show, there were 250 people in the audience. “It totally hooked us,” said Champagne Sparkles, who goes by Lehna at her day job. “The crowd was so super excited and everybody was cheering, it was awesome.” In 2010 the Cheesecake Revue is travelling the world and making a stop at the Capitol Theatre this Friday, Feb. 26. The show promises to be a mix of glamour and sparkle, comedy, danc-
ing and performances by women of all ages, shapes and sizes. “We are not cookie cutter women,” Champagne Sparkles said. “We have big and small boobies and big and small bums and we all feel totally comfortable with ourselves.” Getting up on stage that first night is often nerve wracking for most women new to the Revue. Most are not performers, explained Champagne, “but we all have a little bit of exhibitionist in us!” “We all have learned to feel better about ourselves and feel comfortable with our jiggles,” she added. “We got into it because it was fun, but it has turned into a way to help other women feel better about their bodies. “So many women come up to us after the show and say, ‘Wow, you look

Nelson’s 2010 Heart Month Campaign is in full swing and with only a week left in the month of February, there is not a moment to lose! There are close to 50 Nelson Heart and Stroke volunteers canvassing door to door this month, all of whom are working to ensure vital research and medical advancements can continue. Through the generosity and compassion of vol-
unteers, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has been able to apply lifesaving knowledge, education and advocacy that generate real results. Remember, February is Heart Month so be on the look out for a volunteer. For details how you can get involved please contact Nancy Liknes at (250) 505-5342 or at nliknes@hsf.bc.ca. - submitted

We’ve all heard that it’s better to be more organized, but have you ever stopped to think what disorganization is costing you? Unfortunately, being disorganized comes with a hefty price tag. Think of disorganization as a hole in your wallet--the more disorganized you are the bigger the hole. Let’s calculate a few ways disorganization can cost us: Missing payments: Losing or forgetting about a bill until after the due date costs us in finance charges or late penalties. Also, don’t forget about how our credit ratings can be effected by to many late payments. Buying what we already have: purchasing items because the first one is lost, forgotten about, or broken
never cashed, gift certificates unused, and store credits never redeemed. Dining out: How many of us dine-out because we just didn’t have enough time to pack a lunch or figure out something for dinner? Just making your own lunch instead of dining-out can save us up to $400 a month. Storage Fees: This is one of the fastest growing industries, profiting billions of dollars. How much are you loosing to have your clutter stored? We deal with more information in one day than medieval peasant’s dealt with in a whole year. So, to be organized in the 21st century it is imperative to have systems to stay on top of it all. Stop letting disor ganization rob you!
Restoring Order
Jen Heale
because it wasn’t taken care of is a common problem. Just stop and think: How much do those duplicate purchases add up to? Missed Savings: How many times have you missed chances to save money with rebates, coupons, or refunds? The biggest one I see in my profession is missed tax deductions. Throwing money away: Yes, people are constantly throwing money away. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve seen old cheques
