Get on the electric bike bandwagon EcoCentric: The case for green building

NELSON BECKER

A group of electric bicyclers show of their eco-transport during a parade at the MarketFest on Friday, August 20.

Electric bikes have been revving up in town for a few years now, and have been proving themselves as the perfect vehicle for Nelsonites for a variety of reasons. They can get a person to the top of uphill or carry a significant load or children around, while accomplishing a massive reduction in greenhouse gas production from cars and giving cyclists that extra boost. As well as being used for day to day commuting and transporting, electricassisted cycles are used in several businesses around town. Tobias Jenny, the Uphill Baker, has been using an electric

bike with a trailer to deliver his bread during the snow-free months since June of 2009. Paul Hoepfner-Homme of Nelson Urban Acres is in his second year of using his bike and trailer combo as his sole method of transport to travel between his 13 urban plots as well as bring his produce to market. Valerie Sanderson uses her bike to pick up groceries and do smaller deliveries for Ariah’s Edible Creations, and will be able to do more once she integrates a trailer into the mix. - Submitted by Val Sanderson

The Kootenays is a centre for “green” industry in many ways... some less mainstream than others. But one of the most important trends is one often overlooked – green building. In its most basic sense green building incorporates design and construction practices which work to reduce the negative effects of buildings on the environment and their occupants. Residential and commercial buildings are the single largest contributor to carbon dioxide emissions worldwide – more than 37% of carbon emissions annually in North America. The building sector alone in the United States accounts for more carbon dioxide emissions than any other single country except China. Buildings create more greenhouse gas emissions than cars, jet transportation, and oil sands development, even more than farting cows. Buildings account for so much carbon debt because they use so much energy.

eco centric Robin Urguhart Recent statistics put building energy use at 68% of the total energy use in Canada and the US, more than half of which is residential. How can we even begin to tackle the looming climate crisis without taking a serious look at our built environment? Many things can be done individually and as a community to implement environmentally friendly building practices. Some examples for the Kootenays include: making best use of solar exposure, planting deciduous trees for summer shade, sourcing local lumber and other products, non-toxic finishes, buying low-E high R-value windows and increasing insulation. And there are many, other easy steps in building we can take to reduce our environmental impact and energy use while saving money. While the most profound change will come from grassroots and businesses, the example set by

our municipalities is vitally important. The Kootenays is a great crucible for green building. We have excellent natural resources, a skilled work force and the technical expertise necessary for pulling it all together. Nelson has the potential to further increase its progressive reputation by becoming a green building centre in Canada. Other Canadian municipalities have already adopted green building standards. Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Edmonton have all committed to meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard for all civic buildings. Nelson could mandate similar requirements for its civic buildings as part of its sustainability plan. If you support green building call or write a city counsellor and tell them you would like to see Nelson’s civic buildings meet LEED standards. Tougher impaired driving penalties Beginning Monday, Sept. 20 police in British Columbia will be out and armed with some tough new drunk driving penalties. Drivers will spend more time off the road and more money when they are found to be impaired. “All of our officers are trained in the new impaired driving laws and will be a presence on Nelson’s streets,” said Sgt. Howie Grant. “Nelson is no better or worse than the rest of BC when it comes to impaired driving,” “Unfortunately, impaired driving is on the increase in this province and that’s alarming because it means some people still aren’t getting the message,” said Solicitor General Michael de Jong.

“The new penalties will be a wake-up call because when September comes, drinking drivers can lose their driver’s licence, have their vehicle impounded, and pay costs that range from $600 to $3,750.” Drivers caught once in the “warn” range (between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent Blood Alcohol Content) in a five-year period will face an immediate, three-day driving ban and a $200 fine; a second time, a seven-day ban and a $300 fine; and a third time, a 30day ban and a $400 fine. Research shows a BAC in that range means a driver is seven times more likely to be in a fatal crash than if they have no alcohol in their body. - from the files from Goverment of BC

Leafs head to training camp

Wednesday, September 1, is day one of the Nelson Leafs four-day training camp. New head coach, Chris Shaw, expects 40+ hopefuls to try out. Four veterans of the ’09-’10 campaign are committed to the Leafs, and several others could be back wearing the green and white if their shot at Jr. A is unsuccessful. But look for many new faces on the roster this year. Exhibition games will see Castlegar here on Tuesday, September 7th, and the Leafs travelling to Grand Forks on Wednesday the 8th. League play begins that week-end, with the Leafs in Castlegar on Friday the 10th, and the Rebels in Nelson on Saturday the 11th for the rematch. One interesting wrinkle

Coach Shaw suggests it will be a great experience for the boys, and a great recruiting tool for the teams and the league.

Street Talk: Do you have too much stuff?

Absolutely. I have too much of the wrong stuff and not enough of the right stuff.

Ross Steed, Nelson

Why is there poo in the water? Dear Editor, Why, in 2010, are the residents of Nelson still using an under the river septic disposal system? I was insulted by the note in the paper that went something like, “Okay, it is alright to swim again at Taghum beach. The high fecal count was probably due to ducks and geese.” People, come forward! I can personally remember two other times in my 20 years of residency here, where there was poo in the water at Taghum. And it was not duck or geese poo, it was of the human kind! There was some mention at the time of

a leakage, perhaps, no one really knew the extent of the problem. We are living in a crucial time where all of our intention must go to keeping our environment clean. Generally speaking, we are green thinkers in our community! Putting this shit aside, so to speak, we’ve got to find a solution to our present waste system. Let’s step up here and evolve in this septic issue. We really are brilliant human beings with the capability of using foresight! Laurie Madison Nelson

RETURN to former policies, philosophy and pricing of past years. Make it fun again. Put the “community” back in the “community” complex.

Sort of. I have a lot of toys. I think I have enough toys, and I’m going to keep them and give them to my kids.

What can be done to make the NDCC more usable? FIX the admissions policy to reflect the reality that many of us only want to use the pool! It is no longer affordable to bring my young child for a swim.

TREAT the pool facilities without chlorine (many examples of health-promoting options exist without using toxic chlorine products). WARMER showers, better heating (in the winter) for the change rooms to the pool, and some anti-slip mats in that hallway.

LOWER rates and transportation to the complex for people in rural areas. STOP playing annoying music in the fitness area and get rid of all the TVs! IF the prices to enter were more reasonable, Say $2. A person, then more people would benefit from use, and at the same time the money would be there in the volume. STAY open 24 hours a day. KEEP the admission pricing separated for the pool, gym, and skating rink. Have more kid time-slots for drop in hockey and shinny hockey.

MAKE it cheaper. Get rid of the chlorine. Separate fees for the pool, ice rink and the exercise area. A cold shower is needed at the sauna. WE have swim lessons for our kids from fall thru spring. We only ever use the pool. I want a price for families to take their children swimming without paying for full facility use. LOWER the prices, extend the hours. Do it for the people, not for profit. EARLY morning swims on Tuesday and Thursday should be reinstated. THINGS should be priced accordingly.

us who can live in medium-sized closets. There are some people who say, if you haven’t looked at it in a year, perhaps it’s time for it to go. This sounds like a good adage to follow, but I cannot advise others what to do with their stuff, because I haven’t figured out what to do with mine yet. I am, however, open to ideas. As much as many people tell me how easy it is to rid myself of my stuff burden, I have not yet been able to overcome my emotional attachment. Maybe it’s an addiction. But I am not resigned to giving up. Maybe by this time next tear, I will be back in my medium-sized closet.

Nelson, British Columbia Book Launch

Page 7

A PICTURE’S WORTH 1000 WORDS

Thursday, Sept. 2, 6-8 p.m. at Touchstones Nelson, 502 Vernon St.

What began as an idea to showcase a small, quirky, history-filled, lovely mountain town became a Canadian bestseller before the turn of the millennium. The 1996 photographic coffee table book Nelson, British Columbia in Photographs sold 14,000 copies over two editions. Now, the team of Anne DeGrace and Steve Thornton (Ward Creek Press), with photographer David R. Gluns, are poised to release a new book. Nelson, British Columbia, a full-colour pictorial, will launch at Touchstones Nelson on Thursday, September 2, from 6 to 8pm. “We hoped to produce a beautiful book back in ’96,” says DeGrace, “but the result was so fully embraced by locals, it made us proud.” That edition, she says, featured a cover designed by Fiona Richards and interior design by Angela Lockerbie, with photographs by 10 area photographers. “The book has gone to all ends of the earth, with tourists or sent by residents to family and friends. The City has used it as an ambassador.” DeGrace and Thornton wanted to create another beautiful book, but with a new look. They chose to work with David Gluns, because “his photographs are superb,” says Thornton,. “And he has more than 45,000 images to choose from.” Gluns has supplied images to a large number of corporate clients, including British Columbia magazine. They chose Chris Rowat and Daiva Villa (Chris Rowat Design) for a fresh take at the hands of designers with a stellar track record. In addition to the locally familiar Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine, the team designs art books for the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, among other high-profile clients. “They were a dream to work with,” says DeGrace. “Professional, inspired, and they love this town as much as we do.” DeGrace has worked at the Nelson Library for more than 20 years, and has raised three children and published three novels. Thornton was a reporter for the Nelson Daily News for many years before embracing freelance writing full time. He now lives in Ontario, where he specializes in motorcycle journalism. Nelson, British Columbia follows the same successful format as its predecessor, but with 114 new photographs and accompanying text, as well as 14 archival photographs, most supplied by Touchstones Nelson. Thornton is pleased to be launching the book at Touchstones. “It’s such a cornerstone for Nelson,” he says. “It just made sense.” An exhibition of photographs by David Gluns complements the evening; the show remains on display through September. All are welcome to the launch in the lobby of Touchstones, with the entire facility open to tour, by donation, beginning at 5 p.m. Nelson, British Columbia is available at local book stores and gift shops. - Submitted

Anne DeGrace and friends are releasing their new book featuring Nelson in photographs. Celebrate its release this Thursday at Touchstones Museum.

Briefly Krafty Kuts

Wednesday, Sept. 8 at SpiritBar, 422 Vernon St.

With a new LP on the way in fall, Krafty is ready to bring the heat back to one of his favourite stops in Canada! He’s packing an arsonal of new bangers from Drum ‘n Bass to Breaks, Dubstep to HipHop rerubs. Last time Krafty Kuts performed in Nelson, the show sold out in 15 minutes so don’t miss out!

Disco Drag Dynasty feat. Lady Daisey Saturday, Sept. 4 at SpiritBar, 422 Vernon St.

Lady Daisey has rocked venues around the globe - from small smokey clubs to massive hip hop festivals - her message is one of love and inspiration, soulfully presented over head noddin’ Batsauce beats. Singing since she was 5, Lady Daisey has developed a playful powerhouse style that’s sure to grab the attention and steal the hearts of everyone within ear’s reach. It’s like sunshine for your soul. Daisey worked the North Florida music scene singing in groups, ranging from wildly Zappa’esque to robot-themed ’80s cover bands, all the while, developing a natural and confident stage presence. In search of her inner voice, she eventually picked up the guitar and started writ ing and performing her own acoustic soul originals at open mic jams.

Daisey is also a veteran interface designer for software and audio plugins, giving her yet another angle to express herself in the world of music.

Five Alarm Funk Tuesday, Sept. 7 at SpiritBar, 422 Vernon St.

Five Alarm Funk is Vancouver’s own 11piece Afrobeat-Funk-Jazz Orchestra. Since 2003, the band has brought their relentless grooves to clubs and many major festivals across Western Canada and are always asked to keep coming back. Intense horn lines and percolating Afro-Beat guitar combined with the interplay of four percussionists creates an impression undescribable. The band’s wicked cross-rhythms and frenetic, costumed stage show appeals to Jazz/Blues fans and clubs kids alike. Five Alarm Funk has carved out a word of mouth fan base from a series of crowdpleasing performances at clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout B.C. They have been in the top rated bands played on many University radio stations across BC and Alberta. Five Alarm Funk has built an enthusiastic fan base large enough to twice sell out the legendary world-class venue, The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC both in 2007 & 2008. In 2003, the 11piece phenomenon has performed over 120 shows throughout Western Canada,

sharing stages with such artists as Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Herbaliser, Sly & Robbie, Fishbone, Xavier Rudd, Hey Ocean, Albino! and many others. Every performance is an unstoppable dance party. The band’s playful, highenergy live show is fueled by skin-tight arrangements and raw, sweat-drenched passion. From its founding as a six-piece in 2003, the young band has grown into one of the most exciting and unique groups in Canada today. Five Alarm Funk’s wacky costumes and stage antics guarantee a frenzied dance party, but the boys in the band can really play too. Five Alarm Funk can easily pack a dance floor, but they’ve got tons of jazz chops too. They’ve got all elements. They are the real deal!

Techromancer w/ Celebrity Traffic Friday, Sept. 3, 9:30 p.m. at The Royal, 330 Baker St.

Two Indie/Dance/Electro-Pop bands are coming to Nelson, and they want to collide with your lives. Techromancer features Andrew Juurinen and Calli Bachman, daughter of Canadian icon Randy Bachman. Cali and Andrew met on the internet. They named their band after a videogame. They make tracks in Ableton and then play and sing over them live. They play keyboards and drums.

They make music to make you dance. They prefer dinosaurs to dragons. They kidnap sea urchins and collect wisdom teeth. They fear heart attacks and remote control cars. Celebrity Traffic is three guys, six keyboards, two guitars, one bass, three vocals, one laptop, one green bullet, and copious amounts of distortion pedals. They’ve shared the stage with Junior Boys, LA Riots, Felix Cartal, and Guilty About Girls. This will be both bands’ first time playing Nelson, and they want to come back: so let’s make this epic shall we?

Sonny Rhodes Friday, Sept. 10, 9 p.m. at The Royal, 330 Baker St.

Legendary Blues Promotions is pleased to announce the return of the one and only Sonny Rhodes. Sonny Rhodes is a North American Blues Legend, singer, songwriter, and lap steel guitar player.
