Post-secondary science Mungall, RDCK discuss Kootenay food security Maryn is a grade 12 student at LVR. She particularly enjoyed her last unit in Physics in Grade 11, which described aspects of Einstein’s theory of relativity. She found this theory interesting, and wanted to know if there were practical applications, and, in general, she was keen to learn more about it. Thus, she booked a meeting with Dr. Science, and it was mentioned that one must properly account for the relativistic mass increase (in the design of accelerator equipment) that occurs when charged particles approach the speed of light. Otherwise the accelerator will not work properly and the particles will be lost from the machine before they are delivered to the experiment. Maryn mentioned that in her grad transition class she identified what fields she might be interested in after high school. For her, she had an interest in engineering, but she also had an interest in pure science. Through research into several universities, she discovered a programme called engineering physics that spans both engineering & science. Applications to four universities are underway: UBC, Queens, Carleton,

dr. science Morgan Dehnel and McMaster. Each of these schools offers engineering physics. She will wait to see how each school responds to her application before making a decision. Maryn has also prepared some scholarship applications, and probably will work on a few more, though in some cases the universities automatically award scholarships based on marks. Maryn is on the one hand excited and interested to go to university, but on the other hand she is experiencing trepidation. Dr. Science remembers these same feelings from long ago. In Dr. Science’s engineering physics class from the 1980’s there was only one female student in his year, and it is very encouraging to hear that there are young ladies like Maryn who are interested in entering engineering physics. Let’s hope that Maryn’s university classes are well represented with both female and male students. Good luck Maryn!
Food security in the Kootenays takes center stage in the region’s ongoing sustainability efforts this November. Both MLA Michelle Mungall and the Regional District of Central Kootenay are holding public meetings to gather opinions on food security and strengthening the local food system. The World Health Organization says food security means “all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.” Three months ago, Mungall hired intern Paris Marshall Smith, a Master’s student at UBC, to create a report investigating the networks and infrastructure needed to develop the local food system. “After speaking with local farmers, food producers and consumers, it was clear that we needed to identify and strategize

Basil is one of my favourite herbaceous flavours. There is nothing brighter than the aroma of basilica Genovese. It is like being teleported to Italy. I survived for weeks on basil and bread in Milan. That, and a little Chianti. I vividly remember my romance with Insalata Caprese. I worked at Il Palio Caffé. All guests received, on arrival, a small plate of herbs, nuts and cheese. That plate changed my life. It opened me up to a rainbow palate and and an orchestra of European flavours. ways to rebuild our regional food system,” Mungall states in a press release. On Nov. 6, Mungall and Smith presented the report’s initial findings to a meeting at Crawford Bay School to request feedback from the community. They will release the final report in late November or early December. Smith says an improved local food system is important because most Kootenay communities have just three days of food on hand, which leaves residents vulnerable to food transport complications such as winter storms. Challenges around climate change also threaten the existing food system. However, she says, “We have the opportunity to start planning now before that becomes a serious impediment to how we access our food.” Smith says marketing and education are critical to strengthening the local food system, noting some

people may support it in principle but are reluctant to pay a higher price for local food. She believes educating consumers on the value of locally produced food will help them understand the cost and move beyond it. Concurrently, the RDCK recently chose a consultant to develop an Agricultural Plan with a strong focus on food security to “ensure that the agricultural capability of the area is realized and protected as part of a secure food supply for the region,” as stated in the RDCK press release. Project manager Abra Brynne says there is a large local knowledge base to draw on regarding food production, citing Doukhobor, Italian and Japanese communities as historically self-sufficient in food. Even today, she says, “There’s a significant volume of food being produced here just by people who see that as just a way you do life.”
With the Kootenays’ history of food production, along with previous reports and studies on local food issues, Brynne says her task is to revisit that information and assess what local government can do within their purview to effectively support agriculture. She hopes the report will engage the populace to pursue the issue with elected officials, particularly with a coming local election next year, saying, “It is essential that it not become just another report that sits on the shelf.” Brynne’s team will hold a consultation in Nelson on Nov. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the United Church, discussing what the RDCK should do to better support secure food supply and agriculture. Regionwide consultations will be held between now and mid-December; further information can be found at www.agplan.ca. Brynne plans to have a draft document ready in spring 2011.

Selkirk launches revitalization campaign for Studio 80 Remembering the numbers Selkirk College is counting on the support of the community, foundations and organizations as it launches its campaign to raise $150,000 for the upgrade of Studio 80 — the practice, recital and concert space for faculty, guest artists and students of the Contemporary Music and Technology program. The college is in the midst of a total renovation of the Tenth Street student residence in Nelson, where Studio 80 is located. The funding provided by the federal and provincial governments, along with Columbia Basin Trust, includes mechanical and structural upgrades to the studio and replacement of interior finishes. But, it does not cover costs associated with equipment, lighting, recording technology or seating. It is the college’s inten-
tion to cover these associated costs with funds raised through its “Count Me In” revitalization campaign. “The aim of the ‘Count Me In’ campaign is to replace the existing 80 well-worn seats with 104 new seats and to buy and install new lighting and sound equipment for the studio,” explains Donor Development Coordinator Pat Henman. “This will enable us to stay on the cutting edge of recording, composition, vocal and instrument training, and truly enhance the student experience.” There are many ways to pitch in and support the studio upgrade. “Individuals have the option of donating a monetary gift, purchasing a seat or naming a room,” says Henman. “All donors’ names will be engraved on

There is an anonymous Remembrance Day internet posting titled The Numbers. The author comments that, when asked how many died in the First and Second World Wars, he responds that he doesn’t know and that he doesn’t care to know. “Does that mean that I am ungrateful? No. It’s just that sheer immensity of the numbers renders them meaningless. Incomprehensible.” “But we do understand how many one is. Every person that was killed or hurt in war was one. And it’s the only number you need to know.” The writer goes on to say that each one who died was a father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister to someone, and that their dreams, desires and sense of being are common to all of us. My first real awareness of Remembrance Day and its poppies and parades was in the late forties. The post-war economy was gaining momentum, but the wartime experiences were still made forvery vivid memories. Since then we’ve added Korea, several UN peacekeeping mis-

But we need to remember them not as the aggregate count of body bags, but as individuals, each with their own set of circumstances that brought them into harm’s way and to the loss of life. I’ll let the anonymous one sum up. “When the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month roles (sic) around and you know that ...many people gave everything so that you would have a chance at something, stop for a moment and think: how can we measure their sacrifice? Dear Editor, I was three and a half years old when the germans invaded the Netherlands.I lived in Gouda (the cheese place)and I still remember my father taking me to the roof of our house to watch the glow of burning Rotterdam. This completely defenseless and unprotected city had been unexpectedly bombed by the germans. In the beginning of the german occupation, life was not that bad.The germans stole my father`s car but beyond that I do not remeber much of the war. Until 1943...,then schools began to close, food was rationed, the germans carried out “razzias” ,catching men to be transported to Germany to work in the war industry, and the germans began to steal all the bicycles they could find.(bicycles were and still are the main means of transportation of the dutch). the B.B.C.I still remember hearing the four opening notes of Beethoven`s fifth symphonie. In 1944 the dutch people ,especially in the western provinces, were starving. The winter of 1944 was particularly cold and there was no fuel to heat the houses,as a result waterpipes and toilets froze.People began to cut down trees,to get some fire wood, they burned railings, part of staircases, cupboards, everything that was not essential to the structure of the house. The people ate tulip bulbs, sugar beets, anything they could get their hands on that was edible and still more than 16000 persons died of starvation But then, at the end of the awful “honger winter” the winter of hunger, the word spread that the Canadians were coming and in early May 1945 I heard that a Canadian tank collumn was entering Gouda.I ran as fast as I could on my wooden shoes with holes in the soles to the market place and there I saw the tanks and Canadians with black berets standing in the open turrets. The tanks rolled to
a stop in front of city hall .There were thousands of people present.Men and boys had come out of their hiding places and the people weeped, yelled, cried and laughed. Then ,the tank crews began to throw chocolate bars ,chewing gum and sigarettes to the people and it became a pandemonium of joy. Recently ,I discovered that the likely Canadian liberators were the Trois Rivieres tank regiment with Charles Prieur as its commander.Thank you Canadians and particularly the Trois Rivieres tank regiment for the liberation of the Netherlands and my birthplace. Some years after the war there was an international soccer match in Amsterdam between the Netherlands and Germany.Just before the match began, when the german team came on the field, somebody in the stands yelled “give me my bike back”,this was immediately repeated by thousands of spectators and this cry thundered through the stadium. Local currency a good idea Dear Editor, During uncertain economic times, a local currency makes sense. It strengthens the local economy and prevents money from leaking out. It empowers a community to take control of its economy, and helps local businesses to thrive, thereby reducing unemployment. I don’t really have a plan. I just look around in stores until something catches my eye. Craig Adkins, Nelson
Adopting a local currency is a conscious choice made by the community to buy local first. This way people take personal responsibility for the health and wellbeing of their community. It reduces a region’s carbon footprint and promotes regional self-reliance and an economy of permanence.

Library funding raises questions Dear Editor, Area E RDCK Director Ramona Faust’s commentary of October 20, regarding the library referendum raises a lot of issues. Aside from the issue of representation, funding discretionary projects such as the library raises some important questions about what is appropri-
ate in terms of taxation. Although the library was portrayed throughout as being some kind of essential service, in fact, half of all those who voted did not see it that way. Many people in our region are fixed on modest incomes and at the limit of what they can afford. Ever-increasing property taxes and costs of
living are forcing them to sell out. Do we really want a community consisting of only the wealthy? Lastly, the manner in which the referendum was handled has created a good deal of bitterness and division in our neighbourhoods. Jim Demers Nelson
There needs to be clarification
I’m not doing presents this year. Instead I am celebrating with friends, singing and enjoying each others company. Shayla Wright, Nelson
Dear Editor, During the referendum, articles and opinions were printed that may have misled readers. Some comments about the fate of school children if the referendum did not pass would lead people to believe that these children would be without access to a library or library services. I had the good fortune to have spent part of my teaching career as a teacher-librarian and I would like to let the public know that libraries are the hub of our schools. School libraries and classroom libraries are
key to our programs. Most of our elementary school libraries go beyond their enrolled students and have embraced the opportunity to open their libraries to our many preschool initiatives happening within the district schools. Supplementing each school and school library are the services of a wonderful district resource center and a district librarian. Kits, DVD’s, professional material and portable book boxes filled with the latest and greatest, circulate throughout the district during the school year. We have access
to both the East and the West zone resource centres and other school libraries. Inter-library loans have always existed, they are nothing new. I support the Nelson Public Library but I will also sing the praises for our established school library programs, services and the teacher-librarians who continue to meets the needs of the students of all electoral regions.Drop by a school library and “check it out”. Kathy Speirs Nelson
Buy local. What does it mean? Is it possible to buy local? Sure, the 100 mile diet might work, though out-of-town interests take their share of our limited dollars. We use cars and trucks to transport our goods, and the fuel itself has traveled many miles. Locally-owned businesses – like this newspaper – do their best to keep their money in the West Kootenays, though we pay Canada Post to deliver the Express to your door and print our papers in the lower mainland, because there is no facility to print the news in our neck of the woods. If a local business is making a profit in this economic climate, this profit likely remains in our community, rather than line the deep pockets of corporations locat-
ed who-knows-where. Patronizing a business just because the business is local is not sustainable. A local business must earn your loyalty by providing you with quality products and quality service, or else run the risk of losing you to its competitors. When big fish business seeks to control our local economy with discounted products and services, their interests seem single-minded. Driving their competition out of business with the lure of short term bargains often costs much more than money in the long term, and is no way to build and strengthen an economy or a community. Local economies thrive on local businesses, so buy local because you believe in the future of small business.

Antione Feval: Fringe Festival Favourite at His Best The Capitol Season Series Presents: Antoine Feval, Starring Chris Gibbs. Friday No. 19, 8 p.m. At The Capitol Theatre 421 Victoria St. Charge by Phone 250.352.6363 Buy online www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca
The Capitol Theatre presents Chris Gibbs, a British born fringe theatre performer at the top of his game in: Antoine Feval, Friday November 19th. The Capitol has historically presented A Night at the Fringe as part of its series over the past two seasons. Performers have ranged from Cara Yeares, paired with Julia Mackey in her award winning one-woman blockbuster “Jakes Gift” in 08-09, and local actor, Bessie Wapp, in “Hello, I Must Be Going”, paired with British Shakespearean Clown Suzannah Hamnett last year. This season the theatre presents a full evening of fringe magic in this one-man masterpiece. Antoine Feval is a comic tour-de-force introducing us to Barnaby Gibbs, a kind-hearted but thoroughly dim-witted and clueless young Englishman who inadvertently becomes the Dr. Watson-like sidekick to brilliant detective, Antoine Feval, (not realizing that his new partner is actually the master thief who’s been robbing the city blind). Good guy Barnaby eagerly recounts his adventures in a story full of twists, turns, and ‘gadzooks’ moments. Antoine Feval premiered at the 2005 Winnipeg Fringe Festival where it sold out every seat available for the whole run and won Best of Fest. It then played at the Edmonton Fringe and did so well it
was held over. The following year it was a surprise hit at the Toronto Fringe and since then has been played around Canada, and a little beyond, in New Zealand, the Revolutions festival in New Mexico and for the annual meeting of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society. In 2009 Antoine Feval was featured as part of the Just For Laughs Festival, having won the Best Comedy at the Montreal Fringe. Chris Gibbs began his performance career in 1991, working as an acrobat on the streets of London. He’s toured extensively as a stand-up comedian and improviser, written and performed five hit, award-winning, one-man shows. He was a regular guest on NBC’s comedy series ‘Howie Do It’, and has played at the Just For Laughs and the Winnipeg Comedy Festivals, starred in the Canadian Indie feature ‘Run Robot Run,’ and is even a published author. He performs every Wednesday with The National Theatre of the World in The Carnegie Hall Show. “Gibbs is a highly skilled, confident, comic actor whose writing is unrelentingly clever and whimsical (in a way that, at times, recalls comedian Eddie Izzard). If you want to see a fringe theatre professional at the top of his game, this one’s a sure bet.” (5 stars) Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist Tickets $20 Adult, $16 Student. Briefly Candye Kanes
Saturday, Nov 13 at Spiritbar, 422 Vernon St.
Candye Kane’s live shows are the stuff of legend. She belts - growls - shouts croons and moans from a lifetime of suffering and overcoming obstacles. She uses music as therapy and often writes and chooses material with positive affirmations that leave the audience feeling healed and exhilarated. A show that is part humor, revival meeting and a celebration of sexuality, she’ll deliver a barrelhouse-tongue-incheek blues tune or a gospel ballad like Jesus and Mohammed, encouraging audiences to leave behind religious intolerance. She’ll slay the crowd with her outrageusrendition of Whole Lotta Love or glorify the virtues of zaftig women with 200 pounds of fun.

Wil w/ Matthew Hornell Saturday, Nov. 20, 9 p.m at The Royal 330 Baker St.
Wil is considered by many to be one of the greatest guitar players ever. His unique way of playing guitar, combined with his soulful, passionate lyrics has earned Wil the respect & recognition of people around the world as a premier songwriter, and guitarist. Last year, it came time to think about making a new record. Major label downsizing cut Wil free to return to what he truly and honestly connected to his valued management team, close friends, like writing partner, Jeff Leitl and his ultimate friend of 22 years, his partner and wife, Caroline. They hunkered down in their cabin in the woods and Wil wrote the most honest, heartfelt and optimistic record to date, aptly called, In This Together.
to appease or work to a specific genre, audience or market. The lilting If You Want Me, Too written in an evening with friend Shaun Verreault feels heavy in subject matter, but light and positive in its execution. In This Together is an album of personal stories connecting life, love and Wils ongoing relationship with music. After more then 10 years of touring, Wil has returned to some of the core themes that brought his debut album Both Hands into being. He is, however, taking a definite step forward in his growth as a songwriter, singer and musician. Transitioning from the darker imagery and tones of his second album, By December, Wil has found in his third album, a lighter stride. This year has been amazing for me in that I discovered news ways to open up my mind and heart to experiences which allowed the writing and collaboration process to flourish. As well, I concentrated on finding new ways of improving as a live performer and song writer, reflected Wil.

In the summer of 2009 Wil and In This Together album producer, Bruce Leitl (Jann Arden, Wils debut, Both Hands) moved the songs from the cabin to refine the intimate tracks at Audities Studios in Calgary, Alberta. From there, on to Quad Studios in Nashville, Tennessee to see some of the songs more fully realized and lushly accompanied by top notch studio players. Nashville yielded some incredible performances by some incredible people. Bruce and I had agreed that letting the performers be free with the songs was the best approach as opposed to giving them a specific map that could not be wavered from, Wil said. The end result is an album that embraces the full spectrum of sound and standout tracks like, UhOh!, Together and Baby Baby. On this record, Wil has moved away from the heavier side of life and love while retaining his very direct lyrical and vocal style. He has made every effort to let the songs drive the arrangements and instrumentation without trying

I’ve recently had the great pleasure of reading and experimenting with the recipes in “Seasoning’s.” This locally — produced book is self-described as encompassing, “a year of local flavour in words and recipes.” It is a project of the Kootenay Country Store Cooperative and the Nelson Municipal Library. I had the chance to take the book back to my native land of Nova Scotia. I thought, what could be better then serving my family some ideas inspired by the local people in my new home of Nelson, B.C. As a Holistic Nutritionist, I truly love the power in whole foods. I love to cook and I am always trying new things, especially when they are healthy and involve seasonal ingredients. Many of the ingredients I needed for the recipes were easily accessible at the Halifax Farmer’s Market. It seems to me that where ever you are, local foods are available. You just have to be looking. Over two weeks, my food adventures with my parents included making and eating the following “Seasoning’s’ recipes: Kale Salad, Raw Shepherd’s Pie, Spectacle Moussaka, Three Sisters Soup, Garbanzo soup,

Roasted Vegetable Medley, Bread in a Pot (we used buckwheat flour) and Tara Stark’s recipe for Spinach Gomae. There wasn’t anyone at the table who wasn’t impressed by these dishes and I have to say they were simple and easy to follow for even the beginner chef. I even experimented with a vegan version of ‘Spectacle Moussaka’ and it turned out beautifully. There are stories of food throughout the book regarding locals’ interpretation of the four seasons and their favorite foods. The cookbook comes complete with a local food growing guide as well as a very well deserved thank-you to “our farmer’s.” It seems like more of us are choosing local, ‘real’foods to feed ourselves and families. This cookbook provokes positive change and is an inspiration to eating within the cycles of our mother earth. Thank-you for that!

Basin Trust A second project, A History of Nelson Winter Sports Organizations, will also be launched at the November 13th event. Supported through a Community Initiatives grant from the Columbia
Basin Trust (City of Nelson and Regional District E), the project has helped to preserve winter sports history in the Nelson region. Touchstones Nelson has connected with various clubs, associations, and individuals related to win-
ter sports in the area to acquire material for preservation. Some of the newly acquired materials include photographs of Silver King Ski Hill, Whitewater, the Nelson Sno-Goers, and the Nelson Curling Club. Although the funded proj-
ect has come to its completion, Touchstones Nelson will continue to acquire materials related to this area as well as building relationships with the community. Subitted by Touchstones
