Members of the Learning and Retirement Society shovel snow at the ActNow seniors’ exercise area near the playing fields at Lakeside Park. Member Jane Merks says that the initiative is intended to “communicate to the public that if the streets and the paths are not cleared properly [of snow], then seniors and disabled people really have a problem getting around.” She adds: “wouldn’t it be a nice, neighbourly thing to shovel snow for seniors not able to do it themselves?”

Community service organizations in Nelson are as diverse as our community’s residents. At this time of year there is a particularly high demand for the services these organizations offer, and service providers are challenged to meet the needs of those most vulnerable. Here we highlight just a couple of those organizations and the work they do in and for our community. The Salvation Army has long had a community presence in Nelson, says Major Yvonne Borrows, Executive Director of Family and Community Services. She notes, however, that the current

Assistant Administrator Danielle Corbin says that although the demand for their services throughout the year is consistent, that demand is consistently high: the centre provides a hot lunch to an average of 50 people each weekday. Our Daily Bread’s hot lunch program prioritizes nutrition. Lunch consists of salad, a hearty entree such as pasta, and dessert. A vegetarian option is always available. Our Daily Bread also offers its clients counselling services, access to phones, and use of a mailing address. The hot lunch program operates almost entirely on
volunteer power. They have many regular volunteers, including some of their clients. More volunteers are always needed, however, and Corbin says that those who wish to help out with preparation and service of the hot lunch are welcome to come by between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Donations of food, money or goods are also welcome, and can be made by contacting the office at 250-352-7700. Other organizations also offer important and highly utilized services in our community. The Nelson Food Cupboard, for instance, can be reached at 250354-1633, and the Nelson CARES Society can be reached at 250-352-6011.

A Christmas carol A Christmas Carol: a fundraiser for the Nelson Food Cupboard Friday, Dec. 17, 7:30 p.m. at Nelson United Church, 602 Silica
Nelson area residents are invited to celebrate this festive time with the Nelson Food Cupboard as they present a reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, an event supported by CBC Radio. Now a tradition across the country, proceeds will benefit the Nelson Food Cupboard -- in true Dickens fashion. After the event, guests will be invited to meet the readers at a reception hosted by the Nelson United Church’s Women’s Group. This year, Keith Simmonds will join local readers Bessie Wapp, Jocelyn Carver, Anne Degrace, Jon Steinman and Ann Alma. The Nelson Heritage Harmony Barbershop
Chorus will once again provide the musical accompaniment. Since 1990, people across Canada have been crowding into churches and theatres to hear Dickens’ timeless story read by CBC personalities and local performers. Produced in almost 100 communities across Canada, the reading raises money for local charities such as food banks, shelters, libraries and hospices. Tickets are available at Otter Books for a minimum donation of $13, and will be available at the door on the evening of the performance for $15. There will be a food donation box in the lobby of the United Church, and all non-perishable items are welcome. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. For more information call 354-1633 or email foodcupboard@shawbiz. ca.

Olivia is a mischievous puppy who has a way of getting everything she wants. She loves car rides, and we have to tie her to a chair in the kitchen so that she doesn’t run off and destroy something. She loves our cat and they play-fight all the time. She loves the cat more then she loves any of us! We also have to
put her outside while I play piano, because she likes to sing along and it’s a bit of a distraction. We have to drag her on walks, which we understand -- her little legs can only do so much! Olivia is a very happy puppy and we love her very much! Submitted by Janae Gauthier, Nelson

and good for Nelson.” DeGrace takes over the position as Cultural Ambassador from fibre artist Angelika Werth, who represented the Nelson Arts community in her travels throughout Canada and France. The CDC established this honour two years ago
in recognition of local individual artists, groups or collectives who have achieved a high standard of excellence in their artistic discipline and who are active not only in Nelson’s cultural community but extend their talents to other communities and countries. The Cultural
Ambassador is expected to represent and promote the City of Nelson on their travels, increasing the visibility and cultural reputation of Nelson. In return, the Cultural Ambassador can use their official designation in their own promotional materials, programs and fundraising.
Good samaritan snow removal? Mike Royko, a syndicated columnist from Chicago, would start a column of interesting trivia with the line, “Things I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t read my mail.” I recently discovered new (to me) information in the City’s Seasonal Update that accompanied our November hydro bill. The Nelson Youth Employment Resource Centre’s Casual Job Program “links local homeowners with skilled and able workers” for various jobs, including snow removal. Young people aged 15 to 30 are given a brief workshop dealing with the rights of employers and employees, as well as job safety. They are then available for hire. Wages must be at least $8 per hour, the Labour Board’s minimum wage,
been thinkin’ about George Millar and the minimum time paid for each time must be two hours. Since most sidewalks and driveways can be cleared of snow in less than two hours, neighbours sometimes do co-operative hiring to maximize their return for the money. For more information about the program, call Katie and the YERC team at 250-352-5656. Snow removal for seniors is a topic we’ve written about before. In past years the Nelson Seniors Coordinating Society has
been the focus of our information. However, at this time the Centre has not found people ready and able to provide snow removal services for seniors. The pay rate for people provided by the Centre has been $15 per hour. This leaves me wondering, what happens to local seniors who can’t do their own snow removal and can’t afford fifteen or sixteen loonies each time it snows? Reports from Our Daily Bread continue to mention seniors who regularly attend the noon mealtime because they have limited resources after paying for their accommodation. Might there be some way to create funds for a Good Samaritan Snow Removal Operation to meet their needs?
George Millar is a long-time resident of the West Kootenay. Been Thinking About is an exploration of events and organizations in the region, seen from a senior’s perspective.

Join us in healing Dear Editor, About a month ago I built a bird feeder. It has been fun to watch the birds feed while respecting pecking order. One day we fed them a slice of dry bread. We were accustomed to seeing a family of Stellar jays around the feeder every morning; however, the next morning only one jay showed up. It was
then that we remembered that dry bread expands in a bird’s stomach, causing it to choke. This is a plea to all birdlovers: please do not feed bread to birds. Doing so is not a favour to them. Crumbs are alright, but whole pieces are deadly. A. Dupuis Nelson

What I want to give to the community At this time of year we think about giving gifts to others. While thinking about seasons past, I started to wonder about the act of giving during this season. I feel very grateful to be part of this community, and I started to imagine the sorts of gifts I would like to give to its residents. I would like to give to those in need a reliable source of food, a source of food that does not make them feel like lesser citizens for needing it. I would like to give people affordable housing. I would like to subsidize government cheques so that people in need
Join us in healing Dear Editor, Seven years ago my wife and I arrived in Nelson. Our daughter lived here with her son, then aged four. We were happy enough living and working in Winnipeg, but we wanted to be near family and witness our grandson’s experience growing up. We had visited Nelson and the Slocan Valley a number of times before and, like so many others, felt drawn by the beauty and unique energy of this place. Our move was scheduled for the last part of August, 2003. We hired movers, cleaned the apartment, made the necessary preparations—and then we got a late night call telling us that Hannah’s mother, aged 93, had been taken to emergency at St. Boniface Hospital. Could we come? Within a week, my mother-in-law was dead of congestive heart failure. Much could be said of that dying time, of the way she went about her dying. and of the tensions in the family, some hoping for Mother to get better and others accepting that she was going. She did it with few words, as if this was something private, when all her life she had been a very public person. We could watch, externally, but not know her internal experience. We were present when she took her last breath, after what seemed a long labour. A silence, then, before anyone said anything. We were in awe. It was Mother who had died, but we were reminded that it would happen to us, too, some day. The power of it was beyond our grasp. A funeral was held. Not a “celebration of life,” but an old-fashioned funeral with a coffin and a body and tears and hugs and a sermon and singing. And then we went ahead with our move and came here, both sets of parents dead,
as it happened. We were free to be whoever and whatever we wanted to be. I wanted to practice my profession, as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and I also wanted to be an active participant in the community. Two notices in the Express “events” column caught my attention. Bi-weekly bluegrass jams—that sounded fun. And the annual general meeting of the Nelson & District Hospice Society. That didn’t sound like fun, exactly, but it was connected to the powerful mystery we had recently been part of. So I went to the meeting, a stranger, not knowing anyone. I was warmly welcomed. In fact, I was drafted onto the board, on the spot. The executive director at the time said they didn’t know if I might possibly be an ax-murderer, but they needed volunteers, and if I could make the time they would gladly have me. They still have me, seven years later, a whole cycle of cellular life. The core work of hospice is to be with dying people, and the families of the dying, and also to support those in grief. I don’t do this work, at least not in my capacity with Hospice. But I support it in my role as a board member (I’m currently the chair), and I feel happy to do this, because we offer a very valuable service to our community. Admittedly, it can be a bit of a tough sell to the general public. Like other not-for-profit organizations, we must fundraise in order to meet our expenses. We live in a society that gives freely and generously to causes that are thought of as life-enhancing—health, recreation, culture, education and so on. And rightly so. But to give support to the dying, to the grieving—we may not be so comfortable with that. In the 2009 German
film The White Ribbon a small boy, perhaps five, is seated at the kitchen table, talking to his sister about death, starting with the general notion of it, then applying that notion to his father, his sister, and finally, himself. “Will I die?” he demands at last. “Yes,” comes the answer. At once the boy sweeps his plate off the table and it crashes on the floor. We can sympathize. But there it is, all the same, we can crash plates to the floor as much as we like, we can find cures for diseases, we can consume vitamins . . . but we can’t change the fact that there is a limit to our individual time on this earth. The very nature of Hospice is to say “yes” to this fact, acknowledge it, accept it and its implications for us. We believe, and have experienced, that this “yes” is actually life-affirming. Life is more authentically and deeply lived when we exercise the serenity to embrace what is. And so we are prepared to be present at the time of a person’s transition from this life, and we are also prepared to be present with those who continue on their life journeys, missing the one who has died. At present, we have a sufficient number of volunteers in Nelson, Kaslo, and the East Shore, to do these things, to be with the dying, or provide support to a family, or to those who grieve. But we would gladly have more members on our board! We are looking for individuals who share our vision and commitment for Hospice, and have an interest in community education and fundraising. But even if you are no “expert,” we welcome your participation. This place, the West Kootenay region, has a special kind of healing energy. Help channel that energy. Come and join us. Ralph Friesen, Nelson
actually receive enough to live on. We live in a diverse community. I would like each of us to have the ability to see the value in others. Our diversity is one of our strengths. We derive ideas and energy from discussion with those who see things differently than we do. I wish for our community not only the ability to see the value in others, but also the ability to encourage the expression of diverse opinions. We all breath the same air and drink the same water. I wish for our community all the clean air and clean water it needs. We all share in and ben-
efit from our community’s health. I wish for reliable transportation between Nelson, Castlegar and Trail, so that health care can be effectively provided to all. I would give each site its own specialty so that the three units could work cohesively, like a well-oiled machine. What do you want to give to your neighbours? What do you see as our community’s greatest needs? We cannot expect government to understand our needs as deeply as do those who feel those needs. Let us work together toward the goal of giving to our community in 2011.
Fish Heads and Flowers Flowers To our wonderful neighbor who helps us with the snow by clearing the top of our van which is hard to reach. Thankful Neighbor Flowers To the kind, kind man who switched numbers with me at the hospital lab so that I wouldn’t be late returning to work from my lunch break...thank you so very much. I’ve visited the lab weekly for over a year now and that’s the first time I’ve seen someone offer up their place in line to help someone else out. Happy at the lab Fish Heads to the company that employed me for over two years then cut my wage to less than half when it grew from weekly to bi-weekly; pay reduction and work increase? I had to quit because I couldn’t afford to work that job. Maltreated by employers Fish Heads to the drivers who disregard the stop sign at Hall Mines and Stanley. Every time I travel to town from uphill I have a near miss at this intersection. In this weather it is unsafe to have to hit your brakes coming down that hill . Traffic signs are for the safety of us all Flowers To the Nelson City bus driver who noticed that I had a flat tire, while waiting to pick up my granddaughter at South Nelson school. Grateful Grandma
Street Talk “If you could give a gift to the people of the community, what would it be?”
A sense of consolidation. A way to bridge the vast gaps in physical space between us across the valleys and long dirt roads, a way for us all to come together.
Samuel Stevenson, Winlaw
Flowers Massive bouquet to the person who turned in my purse from the save on parking lot. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your honesty and kindness is greatly appreciated. Relieved Flowers To all the warmhearted people who stopped to help me and my girlfriend when we almost flew my car into the river on Pass Creek. We felt so blessed despite what happened. And to my girlfriend for staying calm and strong throughout it all :) Grateful Fish Heads To the logic behind staying to eat in a restaurant, but getting your drink in a disposable paper cup with a plastic lid, “in case you need to go”. You are creating a ton of completely unnecessary waste. Drink it up, leave some behind or invest $10 in to a travel mug if your life is so spur of the moment that you are unable to plan out finishing your cup of coffee. Bitter taste in my mouth. Flowers to the nice lady and her son who tapped me on the shoulder on Baker Street and gave me back the bill that had fallen out of my pocket. Your timing couldn’t have been better! Your kind action saved me a lot of grief. Very grateful.

If there is one dish that I would call my signature, it is risotto. I have been enjoying its creamy, loving warmth for ages. It is the ultimate comfort food, and by the time you finish reading this column you’ll be confident enough to create your own sticky variations. Your friends and family will receive it like a hug. No one ever says “oh no, risotto again.” It is truly a treat, and is made slowly and tenderly -- you can’t rush risotto! From start to finish, expect nearly an hour to prepare it. Here is the basic recipe from which all risottos can be made.

Toast the rice in a large saucepan with the onion and garlic in the olive oil on medium to high heat
for four minutes. Begin adding stock, pouring slowly, a little at a time, stirring constantly. When the risotto is ready it will be starchy and milky-looking. Always taste to check for doneness; you want it to be al dente. At the end add the parmigiano and butter. Now your creativity can take over; there is an infinite number of combinations that work well with risotto, such as seafood and asparagus. Substitute 1/3 of the stock with wine for wild mushroom and sirloin or fresh pea and mint. I once made one with sundried tomato, olives and chili peppers. For dessert, try a pudding risotto with coconut milk. Don’t be suprised if people start craving and requesting it. Now that you are an expert, you can handle it!

The winter fishing report Still fishing! In fact, these are some of our best months of fishing. November saw lots of big fish being caught. These fish have definitely put on the feedbags before the winter cold. Rainbows up to 24 pounds and Dollies up to 15 pounds have been coming in consistently. Our water temperature has cooled well below the 50 degree mark now. But that has only increased the energy of these fish. We have not only been seeing the big fish hit the lures, but hearing the scream of the reel. There’s times when all you can do is grab the rod and hold on tight. These fish will scream line for hundreds of feet before you can gain control. It’s definitely an exciting time of year. Some of our best days lately have seen 15 to 20 fish caught. Of those fish, half of them have weights in the double digits. On one of our most recent trips we had 16 fish on in a matter of six hours. At least seven of these fish were over 10 pounds. Now that’s some good fishing. It seemed like we didn’t even have time to eat lunch. Not all days are like this; a more average day would consist of eight fish in eight hours. Usually those days see a morning
bite when you can hook four or five fish in an hour, and then a later bite when you can hook four or five fish again in an hour. It’s the time in-between that requires patience. Some days we’ll go three or four hours in-between bites. But that’s fishing, and if you can be patient you will be rewarded. Speaking of rewards, congratulations to one of our lucky clients for catching a tagged fish. That tagged fish earned them a $100 prize. Keep an eye out for more of these tagged fish. They are part of a study to help us understand the survival rate of some bigger fish. It also helps to keep track of how well the stocks are being maintained. What lures are we using? Lately we have
been catching fish both on the surface and down deep. As usual, bucktail flies are working great on the surface, and our Lyman plugs or flasher/ hoochies are working well on the downriggers. Favourite depths have been between 100 and 150 feet. My favourite bucktails have been black/white, grey/white and the November special. My favourite flasher/ hoochies have been green, army truck and tiger prawn. And my favourite Lyman plugs have been numbers 100, 135 and 24. We’re looking forward to more 20-plus pound Rainbows this winter! It’s an exciting time of year, so let’s get out there. Submitted by Kerry Reed, Nelson, BC
