CBT helps fund aboriginal gathering places Aboriginal students at Selkirk College and College of the Rockies will find support and a place to gather once construction is complete on the colleges’ newly announced Aboriginal Gathering Places. The two spaces, valued together at nearly $2.5 million, will be built thanks in part to a $400,000 contribution from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). According to Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO, “the Aboriginal gathering places will enhance culturally relevant support for current and future Aboriginal students, as well as provide an opportunity for others to learn about Aboriginal culture. We’re pleased to help fund these proj-
ects, which will enhance our local institutions and improve the college experience of the Basin’s Aboriginal residents.” According to the 2006 census, 6,695 status First Nations residents live in the Columbia Basin, including 677 on reserves in East Kootenay. Many live distantly from traditional support systems of family and community. The gathering places will also play a role in educating non-Aboriginal students about the history and culture of Canada’s First Nations. “Our Gathering Place will create a more supportive, welcoming and relevant environment for Aboriginal students, and will support Selkirk College’s goal to better attract, retain and grad-

uate Aboriginal learners,” says Angus Graeme, Selkirk College Interim President. While the projects are different in structure, timing and scope, the two colleges have committed to linking the spaces, as well as one at Okanagan College, to enhance operations and the effectiveness of events and presenters visiting the region. The gathering place at Selkirk should be completed by late spring 2011. The College of the Rockies will complete its space in two to three years, with contributions of timber, sawn lumber, gravel and labour coming from local Ktunaxa organizations. Middle school bakes cookies for Christmas hampers Susan Lakeman, Trafalgar Middle School’s Lunch Program Coordinator, students Christina and Jasmine, and Nelson Food Cupboard Coordinator Marya Skrypiczajko display some of the cookies baked by the school’s students last week. The baking will be included in the Christmas hampers being assembled and distributed by the Nelson Food Cupboard to families and individuals in need.

“It’s great that the students have baked cookies for the hampers,” says Marya Skrypiczajko. “Now the hampers will include some personal touches like home baking. I’m sure the cookies will be well appreciated.”

“It has been a real effort by all of the Food students at the school, and we are very, very proud of them,” says Susan Lakeman. “I think it’s instilled a real sense of responsibility in them, and an understanding of what we’re doing this for. We have 100 dozen cookies to donate, baked over the course of the week. The students have done a great job.”

The baking process spanned several days and relied on the efforts of many students. Stacey Proctor’s Food six and eight classes were instrumental in the project, as was Stephanie Davina’s grade seven class. In addition to the cookies, Trafalgar students also donated the proceeds from their school dance and the profit from their calendar sale to the Food Cupboard.

With the upcoming retirement of Police Chief Dan Maluta, the Nelson Police Board has spent the past few months hunting for a new Chief. Now that search is over and Inspector Wayne Holland of the Vancouver Police Department is set to take on the role of Chief Constable as of January 27, 2011. “What impressed me most about Wayne was the broad scope of his experience,” says Mayor John Dooley. “He’s worked in municipal policing, but also has experience at the provincial level, working with provincial authorities. And he’s a very active volunteer who is dedicated to community service.” Inspector Holland is now in his 29th year of service with the VPD. Feeding the birds Dear Editor, I am a customer who frequents the Pony Espresso in Crescent Valley. Recently, someone broke into the owner’s coffee hut, and stole a commercial blender, an ipod docking station, all of her baking and food, baking supplies, and other things, with a total value of about $1500. The owner cannot afford
to replace many of these things. She is a hard working lady who offers excellent baking and coffee, and always has a smile on her face. Perhaps this letter will make those responsible for this act realize how much they have affected this small business-owner. -- Darryl Engerdahl, Crescent Valley

Publisher’s Note: Nelson Becker
Call it democracy? Editorial Nelson Becker Gordon Campbell has stepped down, and a provincial election is on its way. Our provincial elections have faced an everdecresing turnout; fewer and fewer of us are actually stepping up to make our voices heard by way of this democratic process. The last election drew just over 50 per cent of potential voters to poling stations. Recently, one of the liberal hopefuls for the Premier’s job suggested that we lower the voting age to 16. This is something that should have been done a long time ago.
Any argument that could possibly be made about why we should not lower the voting age simply does not hold water. You might say that 16 year-olds are not responsible enough to vote; I would counter by questioning whether adults are responsible. You might say 16 yearolds are not knowledgeable enough to vote; maybe we should test the knowledge of adults. It’s the youth that will inherit this world, and they should have a say about which way it is headed. Without the right to vote, it is understandable that young people might not take society seriously or
might feel powerless to make change. If young people were allowed to vote, old folks might be scared into actually showing up to try to even out the mess. Lowering the voting age will not happen overnight. We could start by lowering the voting age to 17 at the next election, and then lowering it again to 16 years the election after that. In this way, it would take eight years to adapt to a more inclusive democracy. If the voter turnout falls below 50 per cent, then we will have more people voting against democracy than for it.
What does this time of year mean to you?
To me, it’s a time to reflect on how much the people we love and who love us mean to us, and a time to celebrate the life we have.
Ayla Raabis, Nelson.
Commentary: A Marriage of Economics and Empowerment” Dear Editor, Since 1999 I have been traveling back and forth between Nelson and Kenya, working as an AIDS educator, youth worker and workshop facilitator. I began by volunteering with AIDS orphans at the local hospital of a rural area; currently, I run a young men’s group and a young women’s group, and in my work I focus on issues such sexual and reproductive health education, gender, empowerment, and violence prevention. During the time I have spent in Kenya, I have seen and experienced many things. My learning over the course of these years has been that education and prevention work without economic development is empty. It looks good on paper, and it gets donor dollars, but it does not help those who are most at risk. The two approaches must marry to help facilitate change, to make an impact against HIV, to reduce illiteracy, and to increase the quality of life for many. This isn’t a revolutionary or radical notion. It’s simple and it’s obvious. However, it isn’t what is done. In many development schemes gender “development” is touted as what is needed to bet-
ter poor women’s lives, and to improve the lives of their children. But for women who are struggling to feed themselves and their children on less than a dollar a day -- while men still make more money than women, or control the family’s money -- how will words of empowerment, action and confidence help them? Empowerment work is critical, but it cannot be done in isolation. The more I work in complex economic, social and cultural conditions, the less I can say I am an expert at anything. But I am incredibly excited about our young women’s project in Kukua Pamoja, simply because we are attempting to bring individual autonomy and economic growth together. The girls’ project is currently run by four young women who live in slums east of Nairobi. It targets the young mothers in the slum, girls between the ages of 14 and 25 years of age, who are incredibly vulnerable to HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections and abuse. The group has been meeting for over seven months and has held all kinds of workshops on prenatal and post-natal health, sexual health, budgeting, nutrition, issues around sexual and domestic violence. In addition, the girls have been working collectively on different business measures, from selling jew-
elry to starting a small vegetable garden. Our long term goal in the project is to start a nutrition program for the community and target the most at risk groups – the elderly, orphans and the disabled. We would like to offer a feeding program that hires the young mothers to cook meals, deliver them, and do home visits within the community. The program, which will cost $1200 CDN per month to run, will allow the young mothers to have a higher-than-average income, to access food for themselves and their families, and to gain experience in working at a feeding program. It allows the four senior girls to get experience managing and supervising a fairly complex initiative. It allows over 30 of the most vulnerable community members to improve their nutrition and therefore their quality of health, as well as to start building social safety nets for the community. This program is still in the planning stages, but its potential is deeply exciting. To learn more about this initiative, feel free to contact me at jamiemakena@gmail.com. Jamie MacBeth, Nelson

Phyllo pastry has to be the best kept secret in catering. There is no better way to elevate your holiday fare than buttery, crispy phyllo. Can you believe that in some places they still make this stuff by hand? Turks used to make the dough by handstretching it. Now you can find it in the grocer’s freezer. You can fill them with just about anything. Here are three of my favourites.

fresh mouth eriN Michell 2) For a meat course, I suggest phyllo tortiere pochets. You will need: 1/2 pound ground pork 5 diced mushrooms 1/4 cup breadcrumbs sprig of parsley pinch of cinnamon pinch of savory pinch of cloves
1) Goat cheese-raspberry phyllo You will need: 1 stick of butter 1 package frozen phyllo 1 small goat cheese log 1 pack raspberries 1 sprig of parsley 1/4 cup olive oil
Cook together in a saucepan. Cut three-inch squares of phyllo. Put the filling in the center and pinch the top together making little purses.
Leave phyllo out until it has thawed. Take a pizza roller and cut the dough in one-third strips. Brush with melted butter and oil. Don’t butter the bottom because it will stick. Place a dollop of goat cheese on the corner, with three rasberries on top. Now fold the pastry over to make a triangle, and continue folding. When you get to the last layer, take a parsley leaf, fan it out so that the final pastry layer covers it. Brush with butter. Bake at 375 degrees until brown. Now we’re getting festive!

Holiday bites with phyllo
3) Now it’s time for dessert: apple maple cups. Cut phyllo into squares. Press two buttered squares into the bottom of a muffin tin. Bake at 375 degrees. Don’t leave them alone; they burn fast. Now cut, core and peel four tart apples. Cook them on the stove with a 1/4 cup maple syrup, cinnamon and nutmeg. Fill the phyllo cups with apple mixture and serve. Now you’ll look like you hired a caterer for your party -- without the steep catering bill in January!
Fun food fact: Cooking is the only art that uses all 5 senses. To get in touch with eriN, email mailto:freshmouth@hotmail.ca.

Scopes by Stenya For the week of Dec 22 Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 The darkest time of the year allows you to journey inwards into the darkest places of yourself. Surround yourself with like-minded souls and environments that you feel most comfortable in so you can maximize this opportunity. You can discover balance and ease.
Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 Serious considerations about your life can occupy your time. You have the chance to redirect your life in any direction you want. Take this time, as your goals and dreams will be clear and fresh in your mind.
Gemini May 21 - July 28 Past relationships and events in the family can resurface. Buried hurt and regret can spontaneously pop up in your life. You might have to face some harsh family history or finally forgive.
Cancer July 28 - Jul 22 Love and laughter can fill your life this week. You may have to be the mediator of events to make sure things do not get out of hand. Use your wise judgment and compassion to command leadership over situations in which you feel you should have influence. Your word can be respected.
Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Intimate bonds strengthen. You may find that you have found the love of your life. The strength of your rela-

tionship lies in the fact that you are two strong, individual people who choose to love. Time apart can help you realize this, as difficult as that may be.
key to communication this week. Half truths can only complicate the situation more for yourself. If you are concerned how other people view you, you are missing out on a major growing opportunity. Live your own truth fully now.
Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22
Forgiveness of others can lead to new realizations and relationships. You may have an easy time forgiving yourself in certain situations, while placing blame on others. This can only drain your own energy and lead to missed opportunities. It’s time to identify and release your burdens.
Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 Miscommunication can happen easily now. Be aware of what you are requesting from others and make sure they understand your requests or you may be disappointed. You have the opportunity to make the situation better for yourself, so take control.
Libra Sept 23 - Oct 23
Being clear in your objectives can enhance any experience for you and others. If you are making plans with others make sure that everyone is on the same page. It can be extremely important that you carefully use your words and avoid making assumptions about others.
