KLH maternity program on CBC Saturday, Oct. 1 on CBC Radio One. Between 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. (Pacific Time). Kootenay Lake Hospital’s maternity program is scheduled to be under the microscope on Dr. Brian Goldman’s “White Coat, Black Art”. Dr. Goldman was in Nelson in August conducting interviews. The strength of the maternity program at KLH lies in the close interprofessional relationships between midwives, family physicians, maternity staff and Obstetricans/ Gynecologists Dr. Raz Moola and Dr. Sheryl Alger. At KLH, uncomplicated deliveries are mainly done by midwives and family physicians, while Drs. Moola and Alger focus on the more complicated deliveries. This new Nova bus cost $650,000 causing the City of Nelson to make further cuts
City reduces Transit fleet and cuts more bus service routes Nelson City Council approved additional changes to transit service. ”We’ve been considering the question of transit carefully since budget discussions began early in the year”, says Mayor John Dooley. “We’ve heard from a lot of residents, we’ve looked at the report provided by BC Transit and completed additional route counts. We’ve decided to go ahead with some changes, and not other.” Council decided not to make changes to the Rosemont service and kept the school overload run (LVR Express). The approved changes, effective Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, are as follows: discontinued Perrier Road service, discontinued Radio Avenue service, discontinued Waldorf School run and the adopted historical summer service schedule year round, which results in slightly less route frequency between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. These service changes are in
addition to the discontinuation of the Sunday service, which took place Monday, Aug. 1, 2011. BC Transit had identified that Nelson was the only community in the region offering Sunday service. In its discussions with BC Transit, Council asked about the option of reducing the overall fleet, since the new Nova buses cost $650,000 each. BC Transit is in the process of working with the City of Nelson, Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary on a regional transit strategy, which will be presented to the partners later this fall. It is expected this larger strategy will be brought out to the public early next year for comment. One of the key goals is to identify opportunities to better integrate the Nelson system within the regional system. Submitted by the City of Nelson

Selkirk College opens OPT Clinic
On September 22, a new Options for Sexual Health (Opt) clinic opened on the Castlegar campus of Selkirk College. A satellite of the Castlegar Opt clinic, this is only the second Opt site on a B.C. campus. It will run weekly on Thursday from 11–1 p.m. in the Monashee wing of the college. The Selkirk College clinic will provide comprehensive sexual health information, education, reproductive health and sexually transmitted infection screening. A key aspect of Opt clinics is the confidential, supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere. The added value of this clinic is that it will offer a service to students and staff on site at Castlegar campus, as well as provide a nursing practice placement for six BSN students. This clinic has been established with the combined support of Options for Sexual health, Selkirk College NELSON BECKER and the Columbia Basin Trust. Opinion&Editorial Publisher’s Note: Nelson Becker
Election Questions At every election, in addition to voting for the candidates, we should also be able to vote on questions of opinion. If governments really want to know how the community feels about different issues, they would make sure every election included an opinion question. This would be the most accurate way of determining the will of the people. If we did it at the time of the election, the cost of running the question would be minimal. There would also be the added benefit of having one more reason to come out and vote. Issues could include
future developments and the priority of spending of tax dollars. I want an opinion question rather than a referendum. A referendum has legal consequences and tends to scare politicians. What could be wrong with asking peoples opinion? The nominations period for municipal office in the upcoming Nov. 19 election is from Tuesday Oct. 4 to Friday Oct. 14. Nominations packages for candidates are currently available at the Regional District office on Lakeside Drive in Nelson and at Nelson City Hall.

THE ANSWERS TO LAST WEEKS SURVEY Should the waterfront pathway in Nelson be paved?
No 64.3%
WE don’t need roller skaters and roller bladers on the pathway who will scare the unsteady feet.
Yes 35.7%
IT should also be cleared in the winter to make it usable year round.
IT would be used a lot more by families especially wanting those days to do things together besides walking. It is ugly when it rains as well. PAVE IT! DON’T want bikes and skateboards etc. on a footpath. PAVING is not environmentally friendly, prevents rainwater from being absorbed into the ground, and needs to be periodically repaired. IF it’s paved, make a clear designation for those on wheels (bikes, rollerblades) and for those walking. ADDING everything with wheels would ruin the atmosphere and make the walkway more difficult in winter. THAT would be awesome as it is the only flat area in town!
LET’S keep it as natural as possible. PAVING is expensive. The roads in this town need it most. THE surface is already good for walking, running, biking and strollers with decent sized wheels (which most people in Nelson have). As soon as it is accessible to rollerbladers, rollerskates, and skateboards, it will turn into a “Stanley Park Seawall” situation where there are too many people going too many different speeds. If you want a paved walkway, then advocate for separate walking and biking/rolling lanes (or two separate paths). A paved surface is also harder on peoples’ joints who are walking or running. NO rollerbladers or fast bikes wanted.

How do you use the waterfront pathway? I walk it, but would definitely rollerblade if it was paved. My 8 yr. old rides her bike on it DAILY for dog walking I walk it. WALKING, running, cycling FOR walking and quiet reflection.
I use the waterfront walkway and the dog walk every day, sometimes twice a day. WALK, bike, and run. WALKING WALKING but would love to roller blade and bike as well. ALL the time.
