Local girl needs financial help for rare illness Local man, Roger Fontaine is needing our help. His daughter, Katrina has been diagnosed with a rare illness called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This is a genetic condition the affects the collagen in the body. “All my joints are quite weak,” says Katrina. “The connective tissue around my head isn’t working so my skull is actually sinking down onto my neck and compressing my brain stem. In the middle of my neck, it’s compressing my spinal cord and then at the base of the spine I have a fatty tumour which is kind of tethering my spinal cord.” And now, Katrina has a chance to receive three neurosurgeries unavailable in Canada to fix the compression of her brainstem and spinal cord. These surgeries won’t cure her but would increase her quality of life. Her American surgeon, who has treated Ehlers Danlos Syndrome patients from 40 different countries and completed over 800 operations with great success, predicts an 80 per cent return of the functions lost, she says. The surgeries have never been performed on a person with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in Canada. But Katrina doesn’t qualify for out-of-country funding because of a doctor’s contradicting diagnosis. Roger and his family need

Two touring duos starting at 1 p.m. at Ellison’s this Saturday. Jon Travis Train is a novelist, songwriter and front-man for the Toronto alt roots rock band Train Electric. He’ll be joined by sideman Ricardo DeGaia, the musical equivalent to a Swiss Army Knife who’s managed to teach himself nine instruments. Dan Frechette (previously known as Ramblin’ Dan from Winnipeg) has been called a “walking folk festival”, with over 1500 songs to his name, 22 albums across several acoustic genres and songs covered by several well known bands. From California, Laurel Thomsen is a composer, arranger, singer, violinist, teacher and lyricist who has performed in many bands including a variety of genres. Audiences enjoy their heartwarming harmonies, emotive violin and spirited guitar, while literate, poetic lyrics capture stories of irony, triumph, wit, and humor. Commentary: GMOS – No Scientific Consensus (Part II) In Part I of this column I talked about the motion passed by the by Alex Atamanenko, MP Union of BC Municipalities to make BC a GE free area and presented an overview of GE crops grown in Canada. I noted the potential economic consequences to farmers and the environmental dangers of introducing uncontainable GE alfalfa and the GE Artic Apple. If a GE crop looks tastes and smells the same as its non-GE counterpart, then it is deemed to be ‘substantial equivalent’ and completely safe. This was a regulatory gift by our government to the biotech industry to help them avoid any need for testing. This approval procedure has been criticized and rejected by many important bodies of scientists including The Royal Society of Canada (RSC).

This year’s World Food Prize, which is meant to recognize individuals who have increased the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world, was awarded to three biotech scientists. One recipient works for Monsanto (the company donated $5 Million to WFP); another who worked for Syngenta (also a company sponsor of the prize) while the third is the president of the lobby European Federation of Biotechnology. The conflict of interest in this choice of award recipients and the commentary which followed, prompted 93 world renowned scientists, and other professionals relative to the legal, social and safety aspects of GE crops to counter with ‘Statement: No Scientific Consensus on GMO Safety’, (easilyLevel found on- the web) Difficulty Easy The Statement also notes the complete absence of epidemiological studies in human populations to
determine if health effects might be associated with GM food consumption. Of course, without GM labeling anywhere in North America it would be scientifically impossible to trace patterns of consumption and its potential impacts. Could this be why Monsanto spends millions upon millions of dollars lobbying officials and issuing false and misleading ad campaigns to squash labeling initiatives such as those that were defeated in the recent California and Washington referendums? When it comes to the science behind technologies and products which can affect our health and environment, there should be zero tolerance for such obvious conflicts of interest. Our regulators are failing all of us when they refuse to challenge sk9E000006 industry science and propaganda with thorough and long-term independent testing.

New Year’s Resolutions (and How to Keep Them) A new year dawns upon us. Having a goal to attain is important, although if you are like me you either forget about it two days later or just don’t have the initiative to follow through with it. So how can we be motivated to keep up with our goals? An action plan is key. Think of your goal and the steps it takes to get there, also assign each task a certain period of time. Having an action plan makes any goal obtainable regardless of how lofty it is.
Second, initiative is also a vital component. Life can often take us away from the things we value most from spending time with family to indulging in the hobbies that make us feel complete. Make the time whenever you can to obtain that goal or if possible work towards it while you get what needs to be done finished. New Year’s is a time of new beginnings and in order to have one you need to stay committed. Stay true to your goals and get it done.

as it is, is still not perfect. This year I want to do all I can to to be a part of making the West Kootenays more perfect day by day. I could spend my energy dismantling the parts of the WK that I don’t like, but I won’t. Instead I will spend 2014 thinking and being a part of a positive and creative solution to the challenges we face.
