It was an adventure of winter traveling and flight cancellations, but children’s music legend, Fred Penner finally made it to Nelson (the very next day!) I attended the “adult show” on Sunday evening and experienced nostalgia like never before. The show was not as “adult” as I anticipated, but instead it was a trip down memory lane. It was like being a kid again; the songs, the lyrics, the stories, it all came flooding back! It

Road dogs, Corb Lund and the band headline Canadian country and folk festivals, as well as gigging at New York City nightspots and America’s finest honky-tonks. “We’re able to straddle the line between songwriter folk and straight country, which is cool,” says Lund. “We do funky clubs and we do folk rooms, along with festivals.” Buy tickets: http://www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca
The cat came back the very next day... felt like only yesterday I saw him as a 7 year old, and there he was, in front of us “big kids” just as entertaining and captivating as before. The night was magical, and I’m glad I got to share it with my friend and fellow Fred Penner disciples. Fred also played a kids show at the Capitol Theatre earlier in the afternoon. If you missed either show and want to feel like a kid again, check out some of his You Tube video’s, like this one: http://youtu.be/ORVRcFQr46o

Nelson Police News: warrants and fraud On Monday, January 20 the Nelson Police investigated a tip that a male arrived in Nelson who had numerous warrants and was staying at a residence with people he had orders to have no contact with. While checking the residence he answered the door and was taken into custody for the warrants and now new charges of failing to comply with his court orders. He was brought before the courts in Nelson
to answer to all his charges. On Tuesday, January 21 a local citizen received a suspicious phone call from a male claiming to be her son. He told he was in hospital and needed assistance. Being alert she told the caller she would call his mother to verify this information. The male quickly hung up the phone. This was likely an attempt to defraud funds from an unsuspecting victim. The Nelson Police would
like to remind people to be cautious of calls of this nature as there are those that are trying impersonate family members in urgent need of funds in order to steal their money. Please report incidents like this to the Nelson Police Department or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. submitted by the Nelson City Police
On Tuesday, January 21, at 10:54 a.m., the Trail & Greater District RCMP received a call for service reporting a male in the area of Bay Avenue and Victoria Street acting erratically yelling, waiving his hands and pointing a handgun. Witnesses provided a description of the male and his last known direction
of travel which aided in the police immediately locating the 35 year old male near by. Due to the nature of the call, a high risk arrest was safely conducted and a subsequent search of the male resulted in police locating a rock the shape of a handgun. The male had been holding this rock in the same manner as someone holding
a pistol which had caused the witnesses reported it as such. The male was taken to an area health facility for mental health assessment. Criminal Charges are not being recommended in this situation. submitted by the Trail and Greater District RCMP

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Protect your Ears People such as myself always tend to be plugged in. Whether it’s my iPod or my computer, I always need a physical connection to a device to get through the day. Hearing loss however can always be a danger when it comes to music. So how would you go about protecting your ears? Firstly, try to avoid listening to loud music. I personally love the louder side of music but keeping it at a lower decibel is crucial as long listening sessions could
have consequences, such as hearing loss. Earplugs are also pretty useful when it comes to doing anything loud; whether it’s going to a concert or doing construction work, protection is a priority. Also, don’t stick cotton swabs too far into your ears; I learned that the hard way. These are just a couple of quick tips to make the most out of your ears. Not only does hearing loss affect your ability to listen to music but also speaking to your friends and virtually everything else. Take care of your ears.

Clean the city at night
Last Monday, as I walking to my breakfast restaurant, I heard a sound and I saw a By Nelson Becker cloud. A city worker was trying to keep our sidewalks clean by using a blowing machine to blow the dirt, sand, tobacco butts, and other garbage (pollutants?) into the street where
a big truck could come collect it and take it away. I applaud our city for its efforts to keep the sidewalks clean, but the cloud of pollutants was unhealthy for the people that had to walk through it. One solution to this challenge would be to do street cleaning at night time, when there are very few people out. On the plus side, there
would be less risk of inhaling dust and dirt, and if the city worker was equipped with a cell phone or radio they could act as extra eyes on the downtown. On the downside, cleaning obviously would make more noise. I think that if it came down to inhaling toxins or being subjected to more noise pollution, noise is the lesser of evils.
Are the sidewalks of Nelson: a) clean as can be b) filthy dirty c) could be cleaner? take our survey below:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/street_clean
Last week’s suvrvey response:
1. Do you receive unsolicited phone calls? 92.3% said YES - 7.7% said NO to landline, and 16.7% said YES - 83.3% said NO to mobile/cell 2. How do you deal with these phone calls? I have call display - if I don’t know the number I don’t pick it up. These people never leave messages. This double screening works fine for me. I simply don’t answer. We have this wonderful option called ‘caller ID’. Use it. hang up, or don’t answer if it’s a real person who got the wrong number I tell them so. If it’s an automatic recording that wants to sell me a credit card or wants to give me a free cruise to the Bahamas for $400 bucks then I tell them “Oh jeez the iguana just escaped!” Either not answer, (I have call display), or hang up
I say thank you for calling, but I’m busy, or i’m not interested, or recently, I am asking if they have heard about Eckankar, and that they could google it. When I hang up, I send them blessings - what a terrible job to be forced to do - disturb people and try to sell them crap - they deserve good thoughts. I hear the faint sound of other people talking, so I know it’s a call centre; I immediately hang up before my caller begins his/her talking. When my AUNT receives a call like this, she doesn’t reply; she simply puts the receiver down on a cushion and goes about what she was doing, and in 3 minutes hangs up the phone!
I say, “I know it’s just your job, but please don’t phone here again. I am not interested.” Call display - I ignore them Talk about things like you’re a crazy person. See if they are still trying to be persistent in dealing with you even after the strange comment. It tells you how desperate they really are in trying. Then you could end it by, “Will you tell me how to solve that? I need that solved first and if you won’t help me then I’m hanging up.” Usually they will hang up but not always! It’s entertaining and you have to have the guts to really do it without laughing or being silly.
