ExpressionsNightCafé This week: fundraiser and coffee house
Expressions Café is hopping! In addition to our regular nights,we have sevBy Nelson Becker eral special events coming up. Most of these events are musical performances with singer/ songwriters, but we do have other surprise genres. If you want to stay informed and up-to-date with our events, LIKE our facebook page: www.facebook.com/expressionsnelson Stacey Lock is an important member of our community. For several years she has been working to help people on the streets who may be having difficulty of knowing where to go or get support for their situation. Stacey recently had an operation, put-
ting her out of commission and unable to work. She is now recovering. Of course, in Canada our medical bills are covered, but Stacey is a mom and has other financial responsibilities she needs assistance with. Stacey Lock needs our support. On Friday, Feb, 21 there will be a fundraiser for her at Expressions Café. The evenings entertainment will be provided by the very talented local singer-songwriters Dave Scanlan and Cam Penner. They will be joined by guitarist Darren Mahe and singer Teeka Ferguson. Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by phone: 250-5510837, or if there are any left we will sell them at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show at 7:30 p.m. It took me a long time to come
up with the name “Expressions” for the café. Now in retrospect, the name suits the place to a T. It’s my way of saying that there are many ways to express yourself and it’s always interesting and to see and be a part of expressions that are perhaps outside of our day to day experiences. We are proud to be hosting “Gender Expressions coffee house” on Saturday, Feb. 22. People who don’t easily fit into the male or female categories have been hidden away. They have been fearful of judgement and being put-down. Times and attitudes are changing however. More and more we are looking at the goodness in people and their talents, rather than focusing on things that are none of our business in the first place.

Nelson Police News: stolen shoes & parties On Saturday Feb. 8 at 1:45 a.m. the Nelson Police were called to the uphill area to assist with a small house party that had gotten out of control. A guest had consumed too much liquor and became combative and when thrown out began trying to break back in. When Police arrived he was taken into custody and lodged into cells. It was there that a quantity of marijuana was found in his pockets and that he was bound by numerous conditions from another jurisdiction forbidding him to consume liquor and to be in his home by a certain time. When sober the young male was released and will appear in Nelson courts to answer to charges of possession of a controlled substance, mischief
to property, and breaching release conditions. On Saturday Feb. 8 at 2:45 a.m. the Nelson Police were called to the 600 block Baker St for excessive noise at a facility and discovered several violations of the liquor permit issued for the event. The 40 year old party host was sanctioned under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act for failing to clear patron out in time and allowing patrons to consume after the event closed. On Sunday Feb. 9 at 12:25 a.m. staff at a local pub called to requested police assistance with several males who had been refused entry and were harassing the doorman. They had determined they were too intoxicated to
On Saturday, Feb. 1, at 8:30 p.m., Castlegar RCMP received a complaint relating to a passenger of a vehicle who was observed to be pointing what appeared to be a firearm. Police road blocks were set up throughout the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment area in efforts of locating this vehicle. At 9:17 p.m., the suspect vehicle came through a road block set up in Grand Forks, B.C. Members of Grand Forks RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services arrested four occupants and seized a significant amount of packaged marihuana. A firearm was subsequently located near the road block and seized by police.

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Stealing Shoes (Seriously?) I recently read about someone getting intoxicated and stealing shoes. (editor’s note: see Nelson Police News page 11) It was ridiculous. The Police were called in to a local pub where a few guys were intoxicated and were harassing the doorman last Sunday. All but one left and he was discovered to be harboring stolen shoes. Firstly, why steal a shoe? The article didn’t indicate what type of shoe they wore but some-
thing as trivial as shoes shouldn’t be worth stealing. Second, if the guy couldn’t afford new shoes he could go down to the Salvation Army where I’m sure he could get some donated ones on the cheap or even free. Also worth noting, if someone has the money for beer how can they not afford shoes? So the next time you feel obligated to steal someone’s footwear, just don’t. Use common sense and don’t trust your judgment

TheSurvey
By Nelson Becker
I love you! Do you know what I mean? Probably not. English is such a funny language. In English we can say
I Love You
“I love the weather,” “I love my partner,” or “I love my parents.” One word with so many meanings. In some other languages you cannot love the weather. I think we use the words in so many different ways
that the intensity of the meaning gets diluted and mixed with other meanings. On this Valentines Day, certainly let your partner and friends know you love them in no uncertain way.
The Sochi Olympics and you The winter Olympics being held right now in Sochi, Russia are controversial. The event has it’s pros and cons. Some people
want to avoid the politics and say support our country, support our atheletes. Other people who have issues with Russia’s anti-
gay propaganda laws and other political issues have started advocating a boycott against the Olympics.
1. Are you following the Sochi Olympics? 2. Are watching them on TV, the internet, or reading about it? 3. If the Olympic organizers are listening, what would you like to say to them?
take our survey below:

Last week’s suvrvey response: What will you do on Family Day? 20% said nothing 20% said go ice skating 20% said writing letters to far away family 40% said spending it with friends Comments and Other packing to move (within Nelson, luckily) Going fishing!
I wish I could go skiing but I don’t have a pass so E-mailing to my friends will have to do
I am going to play hockey all weekend with my friends and relax on Family Day, maybe go to the hot springs and relish in our good fortune!
