SPCA Masquerade Party Saturday Mar. 22, 10 p.m., Spirit Bar

John Stegman kept himself entertained during his Port Alberni school days drawing pictures and comic strips. All that non-studiousness paid off in later life, when Stegman picked up his paintbrush in earnest. Stegman’s latest work is now showing at the Nelson Public Library. The human form and face has always been of interest to Stegman. “My earliest artistic influences were the great graphic artists who drew strips such as Prince Valiant and Tarzan,” he says. The show is comprised of six large portraits and one floral work. The portraits employ subtle use of light and colour to create sensitive renderings of the human face. That the artist enjoys finding nuance in his subjects is clear.

Everybody knows that people in the Kootenays love every opportunity to dress up and strut their stuff!!!! Especially when good music and tasty performances are also to be had!!! Add a good cause into the mix, and you have a recipe for a smashing good time! The event is a full fundraiser for the Nelson SPCA. Tickets are available at the Hume Hotel. Early Bird tickets are $10 and $15 thereafter. https://www.facebook.com/ events/216940348503002/ Click ad to go to advertiser’s website.

ExpressionsNightCafé This week: snowboard activists and sweet and soft folk tunes This Saturday night Mar. 8, Expressions Cafe in cooperation with By Nelson Becker Beyond Boarding will be presenting two films: Belén and Northern Grease. The show starts at 7 p.m. Last week I was approached by three young people, who inquired about doing a film showing here at Expressions Cafe. As we got into conversation I realized this was not just any film showing. They are part of an organization called Beyond Boarding. They are filmmakers/snowboarders who want to move beyond the recreational-just-for-fun end of the sport. They want to encourage people to see they can make a difference in making our world a better place. It was encouraging for me to meet these

people because I find that our world needs to move past cynicism, into a feeling that we are powerful. Their particular focus is environmental in nature. Emergency 911 NPD - Non Emergency (250) 354-3919 RCMP- (250) 352-2156 Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477

Nelson City Police news: On Sunday March 2 at approximately 3 p.m. the Nelson Police received a 911 call for assistance with an intoxicated houseguest causing issues. The male causing the problem was identified as a 60 year old local male who had been released from jail earlier in the day for similar issues. He was held until sober and will appear in court in Nelson in April to answer to charges of failing to comply with the release conditions he was bound by. On Tuesday March 4 An NPD member walking the beat observed two males sitting in a vehicle in a parking lot in the 300 block Hall St.

The member noted the driver holding a large marijuana “bong. The passenger was holding a box with a small amount of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia inside. Both were arrested and the incident investigated further. As both males were cooperative, appeared to have made a poor decision and have no other history of this type of behavior they were not charged for the possession of a controlled substance. The drugs and equipment were surrendered for destruction. On Wednesday March 5 at 3 a.m. Nelson Police members noted a person trying to help a gross-

ly intoxicated female down Baker Street. They stepped in for the Good Samaritan and tried to help the 36 year old female in getting home safely. She became increasing hostile and would not assist the members in getting her to a safe place. After numerous attempts to get her home and to someone she knew to care for her failed she was lodged into NPD cells for her own safety until able to care for herself. She was released in the morning and charged under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act for public intoxication. submitted by the Nelson Police

Opinion&Editorial Letter to the Editor: Mental Health in Nelson by M. Plamondon

I want to thank the Kootenay Weekly Express online for bringing a long standing situation to light, and through this perhaps some possitive changes can take place. The article in the Express on Mental Health Updates-Feb. 28 2014 gave great insight to the situation of mental health issues in Nelson, specifically on Baker St. and the request for Car 87. “Car 87 teams a Police constable with a registered nurse or a registered psychiatric nurse to provide on-site assessments and intervention for

people with psychiatric problems. The nurse and the police officer work as a team in assessing, managing and deciding about the most appropriate action.” As a business owner on the busiest corner of Baker St. my staff and I deal with many people who struggle with their daily lives. Most just want to be warm and to be treated with a bit of dignity. Don’t we all want that? The spannelson. ca website is a very good resource to help us better understand the need for change. Change that will ultimately help not only those suffering but

those who come in contact with those suffering and want to help. Span Nelson’s Mission statement and Vision is inclusive and community oriented. Sadly, this issue is all too quiet, kept in the background, a silent issue. We as residents can not turn a deaf ear and hope this will go away, we need to be proactive, we need to support the City Police and Span to have our voice heard and stand up for those who may not have as comfortable life as I or you. We need to be our brother’s keepers and advocate for injustices.

Commentary: ALR- Agricultural Land Reserve by Ann Remnant, Nelson-Creston Greens

I had never given much thought to the ALR. Honestly, I took it for granted because it’s just common sense to protect the farmland which feeds us, period. The ALR town hall meeting in Nelson saw a room packed with people who care about food. Why? Because the BC government is moving to divide and weaken the ALR. The ALR was set up because farmers were concerned with the rapid loss of farmland in BC. It became the election issue of 1973, and voila, the ALR and its governing body the ALC were born. The ALR protects farming in BC by keeping the price of land low provided it is used to grow food. This is no small feat. As Corky Evans said, “If we hadn’t seen fit to pass the law protecting farmland in 1973 there is no way we could manage to do so now. It was possible then to consider

such a vision, policy and law. It is almost unfathomable today to imagine a government, anywhere, achieving a similar objective”. In BC, only 5% of the land is arable and it is under constant pressure from a variety of non farming interests. Governments of all stripes have lent a sympathetic ear to real estate developers, energy development and other interests which have whittled away at the ALR. Prior to 1973, 6000 hectares of farmland were lost annually. Under the ALR, that has slowed to less than 500 hectares per year. Today, we have more reason than ever to protect our farms. Public support for the ALR has been consistently strong. In 2008, 95% of respondents (2008 Ipsos Reid Poll12) said they support the ALR preserving farm land. Climate change is wreaking havoc

with global weather systems which have a direct impact on growing food. Presently, California is experiencing a severe water shortage. What will we eat if they cannot produce enough for export? Farmers’ markets and locally produced food and products are wildly popular, sales growing by leaps and bounds. This benefits farmers, consumers, local and provincial coffers. The Liberal Government’s proposal to divide and weaken the ALR is presumably to ease the way for resource development in the north. Farming and gas extraction cannot occupy the same piece of land. Once the oil and gas industry gets its hands on it, it’s no longer good for farming. We can’t eat oil. Review the ALR if you must, but only to strengthen it. This is the only logical conclusion.

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Online Classes (A Waste of Time?) There have always been naysayers who think that online education is a complete waste of time, I disagree. It may not compare to other methods but it’s still a great avenue for those who may not be able to go a more traditional route. One of the main benefits is that your selection is much more vast as you need not have to worry about traveling to a foreign city or the various fees that come into school. Some online programs are free or inexpensive making getting your education a breeze. These programs

also open education up to those who couldn’t attend a course on campus due to reasons such as physical disabilities or lack of time. While the world is still set on having an actual physical degree from a decent school, an online education is still a great way to go about getting your education. A good idea would be to look into a school you want to go to and see if there is an online program that you can use to accumulate credits to eventually attend it. Online education is a good use of your time, how could education not be?

Commentary: Honduras Free Trade Agreement Part I

There has been a great deal of speculation the by Alex Atamanenko, MP over past year on various trade agreements Canada wishes to sign. Although the Conservatives like to brag about the trade agreements they have concluded in the last eight years, the facts tell a different story. In truth, they have concluded a total of six trade agreements with the following countries: Jordan, Panama, Peru and Colombia, as well as a goods-only agreement with four small European countries including Liechtenstein and Iceland. The question arises therefore, how do we know if a trade agreement is beneficial

for our country or not? My party (NDP) believes that we should apply three important criteria to assess trade agreements: First, is the proposed partner a democracy that respects human rights, adheres to acceptable environmental standards and Canadian values, and if there are challenges regarding these, can it fairly be said that they are on a positive trajectory toward these goals? Second, is the proposed partner’s economy of significant and strategic value to Canada? Third, are the terms of the proposed agreement acceptable? The proposed free trade agreement with Honduras fails this test.... Link to full press release

Two billion or more rising on Women’s Day

Saturday, Mar. 8 is International Women’s Day. It was made a day of observation By Nelson Becker for the purpose of acknowledging the respect, appreciation and love towards women and to celebrate women’s economic, political, and social achievements (Wikipedia). In our community and many others around the world, it’s also a day of notoriety for One Billion Rising. One Billion Rising is a movement started

in 2012, that refers to the statistic that one out of three women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime (Wikipedia). There are six billion people in the world, three billion men, three billion women; one third of those women have been victims of violence. Violence is described as physical, emotional, or even just the threat of violence. One Billion Rising says that women will no longer stand to be victims of any violence. I whole heartily support the end of violence

against women. My sadness comes because men and transgender people are also victims of violence and unfortunately are not included in this statement. If you are to ask anyone who says yes to stop violence against women, “but what about violence against men and transgenders?” Of course they will say “yes all violence is bad.” We must learn to stop saying “stop violence against women” but instead say “stop all violence.” One Billion Rising should become two billion or more rising!

Have you ever been a victim of violence?

our farmers and the great food they produce Good governance The beautiful buildings in a gorgeous setting. Nelson Waldorf School

Grateful to be able to call it home. The native people tell us this place is a powerful healing place on this planet. They came together here to celebrate the seasons but never settled. For some it is so powerful as to heal for some too powerful to leave.

It was a Nelson mayor, Gerald Rotering, who got the Heritage back into Nelson and turned our fate around. He should get a statue, too. A wonderful educational gem in the beautiful Kootenays. Great school community for families, children, staff and teachers.
