Four-hour parking in Nelson
As part of Nelson City Council’s on-going efforts to implement the key public recommendations from the Sustainable Waterfront and Downtown Master Plan (SWDMP) the City is introducing new longer-stay four hour parking zones in the downtown core. There will be approximately 20 fourhour parking spots located on the south side of the 200 block of Victoria. City Council’s consultants have also developed a plan to improve traffic circulation throughout the downtown by adding more angle parking along an extended one-way portion of Victoria, through to the 300 and 400 blocks. An eastern gateway is being created off of Cedar Street where more four-hour parking stalls will be located on the 700 and 800 blocks of Vernon Street. There will be approximately 30 parking spots along these two streets. The stalls are just one of a number of enhancements that will be made this summer on Cedar Street — historically one of the City’s trickier thoroughfares. Additional improvements include the addition of left-turn bays on Front Street and an overhaul of the five-way Cedar/Vernon/High Street intersection. Fish Heads and Flowers Flowers to the police who don’t prejudge and mistreat people when they are dirty or tattooed or have funny haircuts or live in low income housing. To that officer who is courteous and helpful when one of these people reports their “beater” car stolen. To that officer who doesn’t roll their eyes. To the one who realizes this person is a parent, works to put food on the table. To the one who knows the cost of towing and car repair and to live from paycheck to paycheck. RCMPPoliceNews Reports: remains found, teen dies and vandalism Emergency 911 NPD - Non Emergency (250) 354-3919 RCMP- (250) 352-2156 Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477
On Wednesday, July 23 Nelson RCMP were advised of some human remains in the forested area between Bealby Point Road and the Rails to Trails near Red Sands Beach on the edge of Nelson, BC. Around 5pm on the 23rd, Nelson RCMP and the BC Coroners service, with the assistance of Nelson Search and Rescue, were able to retrieve the remains. There was identification located with the remains, suggesting the remains may be the those of a 27 year old male from the Cranbrook area. It is believed that the body has been there for several years. The name is not being released until identification can be confirmed and next of kin can be notified. Foul play is not suspected. The BC Coroners Service, with the assistance of the Nelson RCMP are continuing their investigation.
On Sunday, July 20, just after 1 a.m., Trail & Greater District Detachment General Duty members, responding to an 911 call, attended a residence located on Faulkner Road, in Ross Spur, British Columbia, to assist a 17 year old female in distress. The female was found to have life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, in Trail, BC. The female was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment General Investigative Section and Crime Reduction Unit, along with the Nelson Forensic Investigation Section, are investigating the cause of the female’s death. The investigation is ongoing. A 28 year old male, located at the residence, was taken into cus-
tody by police on an outstanding unendorsed arrest warrant for an incident stemming from an unrelated event. The male is due to appear in Castlegar Provincial Court, in Castlegar, BC, at 9 a.m., on July 22, 2014. On Thursday or Friday, July 17 or 18, the Royal Canadian Legion on 4th street in Salmo had graffiti sprayed painted on the back of the building that faces the park. Vulgar language was sprayed in gold paint. In a similar incident and most likely at the same time, some eggs were thrown at another building in Salmo. Patrols were made but no suspects were located. A half carton of eggs has been seized and video surveillance is being reviewed. Anybody with information is asked to call the Salmo RCMP at 250357-2212 or Crimestoppers. submitted by the RCMP
Police Reports: vehicle collisions and bear swims to hotel The Nelson Police Department has responded to a large number of motor vehicle collisions this past week. On Wednesday, July 16 at 4:45 p.m. a male attempted to cross the street mid-block of 700 Front Street while traffic was stopped for the red light. He failed to note traffic began moving and was struck by a motorist using the turn lane. The 62 year old local male was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital to be treated for his non-life threatening injuries. On Thursday, July 17 at 5:00 p.m. the Nelson Police were called to an injury accident on 2nd Street at Lakeside Park. One driver was attempting to leave the park and one entering it. Both believing it was their right of way entered the intersection at the same time and collided. A passenger in one car was extracted by Nelson Fire Rescue and transported to
Kootenay Lake Hospital to be examined for injuries. On Thursday, July 17 at 6:45 p.m.the Nelson Police responded to a report of a cyclist being struck by a car in the 600 block Hwy 3A. After investigating the incident it was discovered that a vehicle had turned across the path of the cyclist leaving no room for him to avoid running into the car. The 63 year old cyclist was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital to be treated for his non-life threatening injuries. More people die behind the wheel in the summer months in Canada than any other time of the year. The Nelson Police Department urges everyone driving to put safety first when they are travelling this summer. At approximately 1:15 p.m. on Monday, July 21, the Nelson Police Department received a complaint
of a bear swimming across the lake towards the Prestige Lakeside Resort. The bear climbed onto the dock and startled boaters and patrons in the restaurant patio area. According to Conservation, this particular juvenile bear had been causing extensive damage on the North Shore and was highly habituated to the area’s human food sources. Conservation staff received several calls over the last two weeks regarding this bear. A conservation officer was called to the scene and unfortunately the bear was killed as a result of the aforementioned reasons. The Public is reminded to clean up all attractants, pick their fruit, cover their barbeques, and ensure that their garbage is secure until pickup day. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

The Pluses and Minuses of Kickstarting
Kickstarter is an innovative platform that gives many creators a chance to see their product come to life. But often kickstarting isn’t as simple as it may appear, as projects may now even make enough money to reach their goal. They may also reach the goal but fail to follow through with the intended project for reasons generally applied to poor management of the funds. It can be hard to find the right project to support. Not everyone on Kickstarter is genuine and might try to scam you out of your hard
earned money. So why do people still feel the need to pledge to these projects? Kickstarter is a great tool to help get projects funding that would not be funded otherwise. Despite some of its failures, there are still projects that succeed. Ultimately, it’s all about having faith in the project and having faith in the person who started it in the first place. Look at the details and look at your fellow pledgers before you decide to make the investment. Kickstarter isn’t perfect, but it’s a great platform to give many of us a chance.
