Website for Seniors www.kootenayseniors.ca
The Nelson CARES Society’s Age Friendly Community Initiative launched a new website with a celebraton at the Nelson Public Library on Tuesday. Finding accurate and upto-date information about senior’s services can be a challenge. Now seniors and their family members will have an easy-to-navigate website where they can find information about everything from health services and accessible transportation to caregiver support and senior social activities. As for a senior who has never used a computer or who doesn’t have access to the internet? No problem says Chief Librarian June Stockdale. “We have a number of computers available to the public here at the library and our staff is always happy to help out or answer seniors’ questions”. Visit the website at: www.kootenayseniors.ca

Survey&Editorial
There must be a better way to feed and house everyone. In our society, we deal By Nelson Becker with people who are in need as a crisis. Dealing with crises always costs more emotionally, and financially than having long-term solutions. In our community, we force people who are in a food deficit situation to go into church basements, like Nelson Food Cupboard and various other institutions such as our Daily Bread. For the homeless, Nelson Cares Society provides emergency shelter services. I’m extremely grateful to all the institutions that provide these
Food and shelter: a right for all
emergency services. In order to move forward in being a civilized society and to save money as well as heart, we must develop long-term, non-demeaning ways to provide those very basic requirements that all people in our society are entitled to. Having a more effective system for distributing food and shelter would undoubtedly reduce the number of begging people on our streets. Here are two good ideas. I will have a difficult time convincing you of their viability, but I will try anyway. In our society, everyone is entitled to basic food no matter what his or her economic resources are. This
could be accomplished by giving everyone in our society a credit cardlike piece of plastic that they can use in every food store, not for money but for food items. The solution to homelessness is simply to provide free housing to those who cannot afford it. In our society we collectively pay for health care. I’ll bet the cost of implementing these programs would be more than offset by the savings in health care and other bureaucracies. I wonder what the cost of the administration part of our welfare system comes to on a dollar per client basis? I don’t want temporary solutions. I want permanent answers.

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Remembering a Legend A few days ago a personal hero of mine passed. Robin Williams didn’t always have the best track record when it came to movies. Many of them were overly sappy and schmaltzy, but when he was in a great movie, he was fantastic. In fact, even in his lesser movies, he was always a great actor. He always had a spark that inspired us all. I remember seeing Jumanji when I was a kid and it having a large impact of my imagination as a child. I often
thought that I spent too much time in my own head and not enough time in school. That movie made me realize my overactive imagination wasn’t so bad after all. It gave me my inspiration to do graphic design and writing and without that, who knows what I would have been inspired to be. Regardless of the circumstances that led to his demise, Robin Williams was a legend of the industry that won’t be forgotten. The world is a lot more empty now that he is gone.
