12th Night: As You Like It Bard in the Bush Shake-speare

Friday, Aug. 22, 2 p.m. in lower Gyro Park above the top end of Vernon St.

Young thespians (L-R) Sylvia Hardy (Feste the Fool), Sara Hurst (front-Curio), Tucker Bingham (Sebastian) Zooey Bingham (Viola), Margaret Smith (Sir Andrew Aguecheek) and Eirin Murray (Valentine) are ready for their outdoor performance of 12th Night in Lower Gyro Park.

Nelson Youth Theatre presents the foolish Shake-spearean comedy 12th Night, the cast of around fifteen local actors aged eight to sixteen has been rehearsing with director Jeff Forst under the leaves since early August in order to bring this funny, insightful play to life.

The performance will take place in lower Gyro Park at ‘Ye Olde Stone Quarry’, just above the top end of downtown Nelson’s Vernon Street, only a short walk up from the Civic Theatre. Audience members should bring their own portable chair or blanket to this open-air, all-weather affair

where picnics are welcome. Due to the brief, all-terrain entrance path, footwear appropriate for a day-hike is recommended. Admission is by donation and all proceeds support Nelson Youth Theatre’s future endeavours. http://forstmedia.ca/forstmedia.ca/ Bard_in_the_Bush.html

Police Reports: Shambhala drug and vehicle seizures, no fatalities The West Kootenay Traffic Services (WKTS) and Nelson Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) announced that during the week long Shambhala Festival no reported fatal or serious crashes occurred in our area related to this event. There were, however, over 100 drug seizures from marijuana to more lethal drugs like LSD, Cocaine and MDMA. Numerous 24 hour suspen-

sions occurred for drug impairment as well as 3 charges are being forwarded for drug impaired driving. Two impaired by alcohol charges and numerous 24 hour for alcohol were processed. One disturbing factor during this 10,000 person Festival was excessive speeding charges and vehicle seizures. A total of 19 vehicles were seized under the Motor Vehicle Act for exceeding the posted speed limit in excess of 40 km/hr.

The highest speed was 180 km/hr. Most vehicles seized were related to people traveling to and from the festival. Next year the patrols will be focusing on this disturbing trend. The WKTS thanks the motoring public and the Salmo residents for their patience and understanding during this time submitted by the West Kootenay Traffic Services

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Does Audio Quality Matter? Among us audiophiles there is much talk about which audio format is better, but honestly is it even that important? I’ve found from personal experience that the differences between formats are often rather small. One main reason different formats exist is less compression among certain file types, as a different audio format such as FLAC or AIFF offers a higher quality file at the cost of a larger file size. Those files are considered lossless as opposed to the other major type of file,

lossy, which tends to be of a lower quality but is a smaller size. One of the more common lossy formats is MP3. The overall deciding factor for me is what equipment do you possess to play music. If you are just using ear buds or lower quality speakers, odds are you won’t need lossless files. If you, however, have a higher end audio system, by all means go lossless. Hopefully, I explained myself to you the differences between audio formats. It can be a bit confusing but it can be the defining aspect of your sonic experience.

Opinion&Editorial On November 15 there will be an election for mayor, city council and regional district By Nelson Becker directors. Nomination packages are available starting today, Friday, August 22 at city hall. Please consider running for office if you care about the issues in our community. Even if you don’t run for office, perhaps you can encourage,

Are you going to run for office?

with words and money, others to run for office. The role of city councillors and RDCK directors is to make policy decisions. It’s the role of administration to carry out these decisions. In order for these policy makers to be fresh as an institution, it’s important that new faces join the system. Do you think that you are a policy creator? I believe good city councillors, mayors, regional district directors

are people who are in touch with their community and its conflicting interests. They see their role as representing their community. They are not trying to push their own agenda. They are facilitators not dictators. Even if you don’t run for office, you might be interested to participate in one of our city’s committees. Be knowledgeable about the issues in our community.
