Actors Cooper McGinnis (L) and Michael Graham (R) team up as Ross Gardiner and Mr. Green in a dramatic reading of “Visiting Mr. Green”
As part of the Kootenay Pride weekend celebrations, “Off the Cuff Theatre” will present a reading of Jeff Baron’s awarding winning play “Visiting Mr. Green” featuring actors Michael Graham and Cooper McGinnis. The play tells the story of Mr. Green, an elderly, retired dry cleaner who wanders into New York traffic and is almost hit by a car driven by Ross Gardiner, a 29-year-old cor-
porate executive. The young man is given a community service of helping the widower once a week for six months. What starts as a comedy about two men who do not want to be in the same room together becomes a gripping and moving drama as they get to know each other, come to care about each other and open old wounds they’ve been hiding and nursing for years. Admission by donation. www.facebook.com/kootenaypride https://www.facebook.com/

SD8 preparing for school Kootenay Lake School District#8 Superintendent Jeff Jones issued a letter August 26, 2014 to the community about questions as to whether school will commence as scheduled on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Jones says, “At the time of writing, a negotiated agreement has not been reached between the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation and the Ministry and our teachers remain on strike. While we are planning for schools to be open on September 2nd, we also need to be prepared should an agreement not be reached. In the event that the strike continues, we will not be able to operate our schools.” The School District, which is not involved in the current labour negotiations, will continue to communicate via their website as information becomes available: www.sd8.bc.ca

Commentary
submitted by Lucas Myers on behalf of concerned parents of SD8
March in support of public education Tuesday, Sept. 2, 12 noon at the Nelson Commons parking lot across from the Civic Theatre. In light of the continuing inability of the Government and the Teachers Union to reach an agreement, a group of parents has decided to take matters into their own hands and have organized a march for the first day of school in support of public education. The parents feel that the government’s position of not agreeing to limits on class sizes and class composition and refusing to bargain in good faith threatens the future of the education system in BC. Gathering at the Nelson Commons parking lot (across from the Civic Theatre) at 12 noon, the group will head down Baker Street to City Hall. “We had a parent meeting and thought it was a great opportunity to send a message to the government, to have an event on the first day of school, when kids should be in class.” says Lucas Myers, who started a Facebook event page for the march. “I just came home from the meeting and thought, well, its only a week away so lets get the word out. The response has been amazing.” The event page took off,
with over 1800 people invited in two days and many messages of support. Myers’ stresses that this is a purely parent led initiative and is not associated with the teachers union or an organized parent association. “I think its important to make that distinction, so the government is aware that it’s the parents that are trying to be heard, we are the ones that are so invested in this going forward, and that we need to find a resolution that is in the best interest of the people that this affects the most, our kids. It’s pretty clear to me that what the teachers are asking for, in terms of class size and composition and fair compensation, is going to get us there. We need to let the government know that its time to come to the table with something that will work instead of refusing to budge on their position.” He invites parents, kids and members of the community to come down on Tuesday and join the Moving Mosaic Samba Band to get their voice heard. For more information: https://www.facebook.com/ events/343889219099984/ 344728505682722/?notif_t=plan_ mall_activity

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Productivity and the Internet
Many of us often associate the Internet with procrastinating, and although this holds some merit, it is not absolute. There are many sites out there that not only can increase your productivity, they can even teach you a new skill or two. I’ve already mentioned one site earlier this year (TED Talks), but there is more to showcase from the internet that is both informative and entertaining. One such site I visited when I was younger that still holds relevance today is freerice.com. They essentially donate rice with every question you get cor-
rect; not only is this a fantastic way to feed the hungry, it’s also a great opportunity to brush up on your vocabulary. As for sites that increase your workflow, a personal go to site for me is todolist.com. You can use it to list everything that needs to be completed, as well as set dates for when it needs to be completed. I use it for virtually anything, such as something as mundane as brushing my teeth to even reminding me to finish these articles. These are just some sites you may or may not find useful. Use them, as you will.

Survey&Editorial The innocent are the ones being punished
Maybe the best way to give quality education to our children is to take the By Nelson Becker responsibility away from the government. It is the innocent who get punished in this dispute between teachers and the Ministry of Education School is supposed to start September 2. I do not doubt that there are real and pressing issues that must be resolved so that we can offer our children the best possible
education and still find realistic ways to settle employer/employee conflicts. Whether those conflicts are about class size, extracurricular activities, unpaid time, teachers digging into their pockets to purchase supplies, teacher aides, both sides are trying to put pressure on the other side, teachers through strike action and the ministry of education by what is perceived as not negotiating in good faith. Children aren’t the only victimssociety as a whole is a victim, both
short-term and long-term. In the short-term, parents have to deal with insufficient daycare services or alternatives to education. Support workers, not involved in the dispute but are not able to cross the picket line, are also victims. In the long-term,a peaceful, constructive democracy can only be based upon a literate and educated community. While I believe that the provincial government would like to see more private schools, it might just be the best way to give reliable education to our children.
This Week’s Survey Question
What would you like to say to the Ministry of Education? What would you like to say to the teachers’ union?
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/teacher_strike Watch for this week’s survey question in the Monday Mini. If you are not a subscriber to the Mini you can join our mailing list here. Results and comments will be posted in Friday’s Express News Update.
Fish Heads and Flowers Fish Heads to the neighbour who gets a puppy and then leaves it alone often which causes it you cry, yelp and whine for hours. Culminating in leaving it tied to a rope - no water, blanket, food or comfort toys for 8 hours. There have been storms and there are coyotes! Dogs are very social animals and this
neglect causes emotional damage! Until you understand dogs don’t get one! Signed: Continually disgusted! Flowers to the person who left the comment about being gluten-free I’m with ya buddie Signed: also gluten-free
Submit your Fish Heads and Flowers at www.expressnews.ca/fishflowers.html
Last Week’s Survey Question Results What questions do you want to ask candidates that would help inform your vote? Would you support the abolition of the no dogs on Baker Street bylaw? What their opinion is on development for Nelson? Access to affordable housing is a big problem in this area - and will only become a bigger issue as the boomers retire. My question is - how will the issue of lack of affordable housing be addressed? How will you support public education?
In order to develop food security locally, are you in favour of small scale agricultural pursuits such as urban hens within Nelson? How are you going to deal with mental health and homelessness issues in our city? What are your priorities for the economy in our community and what do you see the municipal government’s role in developing and/or supporting that?
