The Room to Live Campaign is off to a great start! Following on the heels of their successful launch at the Capitol Theatre in midNovember, the affordable housing campaign has received anothersignificant financial donation - this time from the business community. The Kootenay Co-op is making a $15,000 commitment to the Room to Live project, disbursing $5,000 per year over 3 years to complete the renovation of one of the affordable housing units. The Kootenay Co-op is also making it easy for their members and customers to donate personally to the campaign. Throughout the holiday season, they are selling decorative holiday cards and donating 100% of the proceeds to the Room to Live Campaign. The cards cost $10, $25 and $50 and are available in 3 different designs. The Room to Live Campaign has already raised $190,000 of the $690,000 goal via contributions from NDCU, RDCK, City of Nelson, Lois & Bruce Morrison through an Osprey Foundation grant, donationsfrom individual community members, fundraising & events. These funds will be used to preserve and maintain Ward Street Place as an important stock of affordable housing. http://roomtolive.ca/

Nelson RCMP: Missing skier found, phone scam
As of 11:15 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 11 the Nelson RCMP confirmed that Search and Rescue have located missing skier Edward Perello. Mr. Perello was extracted from his location and taken to a waiting ambulance. His medical condition is unknown at this time, however, the search team has indicated that he appeared to be doing well. Mr. Perello, 47 years old, went skiing alone at approximately 8 am on December 8th and was reported missing in the late afternoon of December 9th. The RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance. If it were not for information provided by an individual who spoke to Mr. Perello and provided us with a direction of travel he may not have been located in time or at all. Once again,
another fantastic effort put forth my SAR and all individuals who contributed to his safe return. Nelson RCMP have received to date two separate calls regarding monies that were sent as a result of late night phone calls from a male caller claiming to be a nephew who was in trouble. The nephew had have either been involved in a crash involving a out of province plated rental vehicle and needed cash to pay for the damages through a lawyer out of province or was in the hospital needing cash for medical expenses. In both cases monies were sent out of concern for the well being of the nephew to what seemed to be legitimate lawyers or doctors via a MoneyGram.
Police are urging anyone who receives a call like this to follow up immediately with your family members involved to confirm whether it is a real incident or not. This type of scam relies on suspect access to social media sites who then use those family connections to then make the calls targeting the family member’s emotions to send the money. The calls usually come in as “private” numbers and they never leave a number they can be reached and/or use a false name which makes it near impossible to investigate. Anyone who has experienced similar incidents can call Nelson RCMP at 250-352-2156. submitted by the Nelson RCMP
On Tuesday, Dec. 9, at approximately 7.13 p.m., Trail RCMP and the West Kootenay Traffic Services were dispatched to a single motor vehicle crash involving an automobile and two pedestrians on Second Avenue and Robertson Street, Trail. Preliminary investigation has revealed that a vehicle driven by a 29
year old female Trail resident was traveling along Second Avenue and failed to see two elderly female pedestrians in the crosswalk at Robertson Street and collided with them. The first pedestrian suffered serious injuries and is being treated at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. The second female has been transported to
Kelowna Hospital with head injuries and in severe condition. This crash is being investigated by the West Kootenay Traffic Services and alcohol and speed are not factors in this crash. Investigation is continuing. submitted by the West Kootenay Traffic Services
Pedestrians struck in Trail
Trail RCMP: fruitvale break-in, vehicle pulled from Columbia River On Wednesday, Dec. 10, between 12 and 2:30 p.m. unknown person(s) broke into a family’s home on Mollar Road in Fruitvale. The person(s) stole the family’s belongings, their Christmas presents, and maliciously damaged the interior of their home. The family reported that a stranger had knocked on their door the previous day, claiming to be looking for his friend. It is not certain that the two events are related, but police are asking people to report any similar suspicious activities.
Anyone with information regarding this break-in is encouraged to call the Trail and Greater District RCMP at 250-364-2566. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, shortly after 8 a.m., Trail RCMP responded to assist Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue at a motor vehicle incident . Fire rescue was at the scene after responding to a single vehicle down the embankment in the area of Columbia Avenue at McQuarrie Street. The vehicle was partially submerged in the Columbia River.
The vehicle was extracted and no occupants were found to be inside. Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue patrolled the area in using their rescue boat. Police are currently investigating but do not believe there are missing people as a result of the incident. If you witnessed the incident or have any information relating to the vehicle, please contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP at (250) 364-2566. submitted by the Trail RCMP

Which School to Attend?
If you are looking to apply to school in the near future, depending on how you performed in high school you many have a vast selection of schools to choose from. So how do you choose which school to go to? Well, there are a number of different options you should consider before taking the plunge. A good start would be to check out the programs at the schools you are interested in applying to. This way you can compare what programs are available and
what school offers the best programs that suit your needs and interests. Also, if possible, meet with some of your instructors, as they can give you a good feel for what the school is like. Picking the right school can be hard; with so many options it can be hard to decide the one for you. I personally didn’t have as hard of a time as some of you may have, but then again, academically speaking, I’m not exactly a scholar. Look at all your options and go with the one that feels right to you.

Survey&Editorial The best of the holiday season to you!
I want to wish all of you the best of this holiday season. The Express Office By Nelson Becker and Expressions Cafe will be closed except for special events, renovations and cleaning. Personally, this is a special time of the year for me. It is the time of the year that I reflect back on my accomplishments of the last year and
on my wishes for the future year. I know some people make New Year’s resolutions. I make a list of wishes for the Cafe, for the Express News Update and for me personally. I invite you all to join me in this exercise. Take a piece of paper, not an iPad or computer, and write on it 10 things that you wish to accomplish in the new year. It’s important that you don’t tell anyone what’s on the list. The list is from you to you.
After you have made your list, put it in an envelope, seal it, mark on the outside what is on the inside, and put it in your sock drawer, and do not look at it until the following year. I’m always amazed at how many of the ten wishes I’ve been able to accomplish. This year, I will include my wishes for Nelson, Canada and the world we live in. Join me in positive affirmation.
