Book Review: Echoes of British Columbia by Robin Murray

Echoes of British Columbia by Robert “Lucky Budd, Harbour Publishing. 2014, 7.5x10, 224 pp: Paperback. ISBN 978-1-55017-678-0 $35.00 Echoes of British Columbia is not a history book, it is a carefully crafted historical work. Author Robert “Lucky Budd brings the past to life with the words of the pioneers themselves – literally. The book includes several cd’s building community since 1988made mostly durof archive recordings, ing the early 1960’s, of pioneers talking about their experiences in late 19th and early 20th Century British Columbia. Budd has carefully researched the stories being told and offers a written introduction as well as a transcript for each recording. Also included are historic photos and maps.

The book features stories from all over British Columbia, but Kootenay residents will find a few of local interest mixed in. There is a story of one a young woman who came to the Arrow Lakes for a short visit but ended up staying after she fell in love first with the landscape and then with a mill worker there. Another man tells his story of meeting Ross Thompson, the founder of Rossland, and bringing the elderly man back to the area for one final visit. There are many more captivating stories of pioneer life in British Columbia, and in spite of their age, the recordings are quite good quality. The book is available at local building community since 1988 bookstores, including Otter Books in Nelson. http://harbourpublishing.com/title/ The cover features some of the 100 black EchoesOfBritishColumbia and white photos found inside the book.

Heavy December rains The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is urging residents to be aware that recent rainfall throughout the Kootenays may cause creek and river levels to rise, which can lead to debris flows. Debris flows are fast-moving mixtures of water, sediment, boulders and logs that flow down steep mountain creeks. If you observe abnormally dirty water, pulses of sediment, or a large volume of debris, call the provincial emergency number at 1 800 663-3456 to report your observations. For more information on debris flows please refer to the brochure located on the RDCK website at: http://www.rdck.ca/assets/ Services/Emergency~Management/ Documents/Debris%20Flow%20Haza rd%20Brochure_FINAL.pdf

Says Koop Executive Coordinator, Prudence Elise Breton, “ We are aiming for a diverse group of 6-8 residents in each municipality.” The sessions are set for January 2015 and an honourarium of $40 and refreshments will be provided. he project requires a time commitment of one evening - 1.5 to 2 hours. The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Board has elected its first female Chair in its 49-year history. Director Karen Hamling, who represents the Village of Nakusp, thanked her fellow directors for the honour and encouraged the Board to “continue to work together for the benefit of our respective communities and residents.” The Board re-elected Lawrence Chernoff to the position of Vice-Chair, a role he has held since December 2013. Chair Hamling acknowledged that both she and the Vice-Chair are municipal representatives but assured the Board that both municipal and electoral areas would be “represented equally” at the table. www.rdck.bc.ca

Tipi Camp receives grant The Guiding Hands Recreation Society in Crawford Bay is the recipient of a $10,000 donation from BC Hydro after being named a 2014 Community Champion. All funds will support the Society’s Tipi Camp Wilderness Immersion for Self Esteem (WISE) programs. These week-long sessions provide a unique opportunity for young people to connect with the natural world, engage with their peers, and develop their sense of personal responsibility in the process. The $10,000 award will directly enhance several aspects of Tipi Camp’s WISE Programs. It will supplement a bursary that allows children from lower income families to attend camp, and improve the camp’s energy efficiency through the purchase of new solar panels to power their fridges and LED lights. bchydro.com/communitychampions

Nakusp RCMP: snowmobile fatality On December 15th, 2014 at 11:23 am the Nakusp RCMP responded to a report of a snowmobile fatality in a remote area approximately 25 kilometres north of Nakusp. The fatal collision occurred approximately 7 kilometres from Hwy 23 on a non-maintained

section of the Halfway Hotsprings Forest Service Road. The collision is believed to have occurred sometime during the previous evening. Two residents of Slocan Park, a 27 year old male and a 29 year old female, died as a result of the collision with a downed

tree. Neither were wearing helmets at the time of the collision. The identity of the male and female are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin and continued investigation by the BC Coroners Service. submitted by the Nakusp RCMP

3 theft of auto’s, 2 theft from auto’s, along with 2 break and enters, all reported on Monday morning, have Kaslo RCMP reminding area residents to lock and secure their vehicles and residences, and to report any suspicious activity to police. Corporal Shaun Begg says that two vehicles, a 1979 Red Mercedes

Diesel Station Wagon, and a 1992 Red and Silver Dodge Dakota pickup were stolen from Rainbow Drive in Kaslo. Cpl. BEGG says that both vehicles would have required a battery or a boost to start as they were stored for the winter. Cpl. BEGG advised that a third vehicle a 2003 red Ford F350 was stolen from the Hamill

Creek Timber homes which is located at 13440 Hwy 31 Meadow Creek. Also during the weekend two vehicles were rummaged through and power and hand tools were taken. Cpl. Begg says that police are following up on potential leads, including forensics. submitted by the Kaslo RCMP

Kaslo RCMP: auto thefts and thefts from autos

Nelson Police: volunteers, dog dispute, keys and sober driving Saturday Dec. 13 was a big day for 16 volunteers who graduated from training for the Nelson Police Department’s new Restorative Justice Program. Having completed 47 hours of training each, the local citizens will officially mark the beginning of their service, as part of an innovative program that provides an option to criminal charges, and views crime from the point of view of the people and relationships that are damaged by criminal conflict. “These volunteers are committed to devoting eight to 10 hours monthly to the program,” explains Restorative Justice Program Coordinator Gerry Sobie.” They’ll now begin accepting files from the NPD, which will be diverted from the courts to the Restorative Justice program.” Police were called to a loud domestic dispute in progress in uphill Nelson. Neighbors reported hearing loud arguing and the sounds of items being thrown. They were worried that somebody was going to get hurt. Police attended within minutes of receiving the report. Upon attendance the officers witnessed two intoxicated adults having a tug of war over a dog. Broken dishes

and empty beers cans littered the area. The combatants both claimed to police that they alone, were the best keeper of the pet. Fortunately, police were able to convince the participants to release the dog without harming it. Once apart the animal was safely secured. The officers interviewed the disputants separately. After a lengthy and emotional negotiation, the officers were able to piece together enough information to formulate a plan that all could agree upon. The dog was placed with its rightful owner. Police drove one of the participants to their residence and both parties agreed to reconvene the discussion when the effects of the alcohol and marijuana had worn off. Police contacted both parties the following day and cooler heads prevailed. Hopefully, the friendship can be salvaged and boundaries can be respected. No charges are expected. Keys anyone? Along with answering over 6000 calls for service every year ranging from violent crimes to elementary school parking issues, the Nelson Police Department strives to serve our community. One of the ways in which we serve

is to maintain a container of found keys. We have keys for all makes of cars and trucks that people have turned in at our downtown location. Lost yours? Drop by 606 Stanley Street and look through our collection. Who knows, your vehicle keys may be here. The Nelson Police Department is actively participating in the December CounterAttack Campaign. Nelson officers will be on streets of Nelson working hard to eliminate the dangers of impaired drivers. Impaired drivers are those who chose to drive while their ability to operate a motor vehicle is affected by alcohol, illicit drugs and medicines. People found to be driving while impaired, face possible immediate road side driving prohibitions of up to 90 days, having the vehicle they were driving impounded up to 30 days along with having to pay all of the associated costs. Drivers could also be facing Criminal Code charges of impaired driving. On average 86 people die in BC every year in crashes involving impaired driving. Please help to reduce this number by only driving sober. submitted by the Nelson City Police

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Letters and submission Policy and Guidelines

The Holidays (My Pros and Cons)

Next week is Christmas which is something I’m sure many of you are anticipating. Myself, however, I’m finding less and less enjoyment from the season every year. Why is that? I attribute this casual dislike to many things; firstly it’s simply getting older. With age comes less excitement in terms of the gifts and festivities and more just acceptance that they are there. Another big reason for me this year is working, as I’m currently working most of the days

around the holidays, making relaxing somewhat difficult. It’s especially difficult when all your friends and loved ones have time away and you don’t have as much. The holidays aren’t lost on me however. Maybe it’s my lack of free time this year that is keeping me down, but this isn’t how most of my holidays go. I still enjoy spending time with family and the general feel of the season. Don’t let some of the weaker elements of the season get you down, and enjoy the season the best you can.
