Christopher Hunt as Jack Rice

It’s 1650, and the Puritans have closed the theatres. Old Jack Rice was once a famous actor and now is down on his luck. When That I Was is an award-winning one-man play in two acts, co-written by Edward Atienza and John Mortimer. The show sees actor Chris Hunt perform over 25 characters, moving seamlessly between Rice, Will Shakespeare and even Queen Elizabeth among many others. Although set in Elizabethan building community since 1988 I Was has much England, When That to say about the present. It speaks of aging, of homelessness, and of the role the arts can play in a community, providing comfort and joy in dark times. It’s funny, sad, literate, theatrical and very entertaining. It’s for all ages. It’s Canadian, and it’s universal too. www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca

City of Nelson snow-how tips Winter bylaws and more: With deep snowfall, more on the way over the next few days, and warming temperatures to boot, local folks are being reminded that they can quicken the removal of snow along our streets and sidewalks, and assist City Operations crews, by observing the following practices and bylaws: •When it comes to street parking, on odd-numbered days, please park on the odd-numbered side of the street, and on even-numbered days, please park on the even side of streets. If you have offstreet parking, use it if you can. •Make sure your parked vehicle is clear of snow — it will be far more visible to your City plow operator. And remember, vehicles aren’t to be parked on City streets, in the same location, for more than 72 consecutive hours. •It’s very helpful for City snow crews and safer for motorists if residents and business owners don’t shovel snow from a sidewalk, or driveway, back onto a plowed streets. •Did you know? It’s the responsibility of business owners and owners/ occupiers of residential premises to remove snow on the sidewalk or stairs adjacent to their properties before 11:00 a.m. each day. •A helpful tip: During severe winter conditions, try to follow Nelson Transit bus routes, as these streets get first priority for plowing and sanding. •And another: When walking on snow-covered surfaces, pedestrians are advised to take extra precautions, wear appropriate footwear and choose a sidewalk that has been cleared of snow. •And lastly…fun as it seems, please don’t allow children to make snow forts in snow banks or toboggan on City streets — there are plenty of City parks and greenspaces for fun! We, at the Express, bid a fond farewell to team member Bronwyn Murray. We enjoyed working with you and are glad we’ll still be able to see you around town.

Fish Heads and Flowers Flowers- A BIG bouquet of flowers to the kind hearted individuals that consider fostering a child in their home, here in Nelson. Without your support our local children would have to be placed in distant communities, leaving behind school and everything they know and love in our beautiful town. Thank for considering and opening your hearts to the love of children. Signed: cheerleader for foster families! Flowers to the stranger who took the time and not only helped shovel my car outbut got his truck and pulled me out of the snowbank. Signed: grateful woman

Flowers to the lady who saw me fishing in the garbage on the corner of Baker & Josephine. Heartfeltedly called me over, handed me $20 and wished me a merry Christmas!!!!.... You are a sweetheart! You ARE Christmas spirit!!! I had actually just thrown my car keys into the trash with some garbage in my pocket. Although I am blessed with all I need and didn’t NEED the money, I did need a smile in my heart and a reminder to pass it on because that is what it’s really all about. I doubled it up and passed it along twice more. Cheers and kisses. Made my season to meet an elf like you!!! Signed: Garbage picker

Nelson Police: residential, auto and business break-ins

On Friday, Jan. 2 at 10 p.m. the Nelson Police was asked to assist an RCMP member with a male they found wandering on the roadway in the 100 block Vernon St without shoes on or any ID. He appeared to be in a condition known as excited delirium, which can be fatal if not treated quickly. Nelson Police members, EHS, and Nelson Fire raced to the scene along with an emergency Doctor. The 33 year old Kelowna male was transported to KLH and treated for what was found to be an accidental drug overdose. His vehicle was found nearby and a significant quantity of street drugs was found inside. The investigation is ongoing. Nelson Police If your vehicle was broken into on or around Boxing Day the Nelson Police might have your property. A male was taken into custody for breaching conditions of his probation Dec 26. He had vehicle document, numerous charger chords, cigarettes, children’s clothing, and various small items typically left in vehicles on him. This would likely have occurred in the area around the rec centre and possible into Fairview. If you think any of this property is yours please contact Cst Hannah at the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-

3919 to identify and claim it. Between Saturday, Dec. 27 and Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, a local business, in the 600-block of Lakeside Drive, was the subject of a Commercial Break and Enter. During the commission of the offence, a large sum of cash, keys, and a safe were stolen. The RCMP Forensic Investigation Team attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing. On Monday, Dec. 29, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a resident in lower Fairview awoke to noises in her residence and was surprised to find a female stranger in her hallway. The stranger claimed she had gotten the wrong house and left without incident. The following afternoon the resident noticed an opened bathroom window and realized she had been the subject of a Residential Break and Enter. During the investigation it was determined that there were two suspects who had tried multiple windows around the house before finding one unlocked. A neighbor half a block away reported someone knocking on her knock at approximately 10:00 p.m., on the same night. On Tuesday, Dec. 30 at approximately 12:00 p.m., the Nelson Police received a report of a shop-lifting from a local business in the 1000-block

Lakeside Drive. Two male suspects had entered the business and had forced open locked security cases and stole approximately $2,500.00 worth of electronics. Police have seized surveillance footage of the suspects and identification is pending. On Saturday, Dec. 20, the Nelson Police Department received a call for service to a residence for a break and enter that occurred overnight. It was determined that offender(s) had gone through the complainant’s unlocked vehicle and then entered the complainant’s unlocked residence removing a jacket, wallet, and cash. Investigation is ongoing at this time and the Nelson Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact the Nelson Police Department or Crimestoppers. The Nelson Police Department would like to remind residents to ensure their vehicles and residences are secure to avoid becoming potential victims of crime. If anyone has any information into any of the above matters, please phone the Nelson Police Department at 250354-3919 or Crime Stoppers 1-800222-TIPS (8477) submitted by the Nelson City Police

Nelson Fire Rescue Service would like to remind members of our community that as cooler weather has moved into the region our furnaces, fireplaces and stoves are working harder to keep our homes and businesses warm and that steps should be taken to ensure they are in good working order. This includes making sure furnaces and furnace filters are clean and fresh air intakes are not obstructed as well as fireplace and stove flues and chimneys are clean so as to limit

the amount of soot or creosote buildup that may ignite within the chimney potentially causing a fire in the chimney chase or attic space. We also want to remind those who use additional heating devices such as portable electrical heaters to keep them free and clear of combustibles and to not leave them unattended. Never leave a burning candle unattended! We want to remind everyone that “Smoke Detectors Save Lives” so please make sure you have working

smoke detectors near rooms where people may sleep and that you test your smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly. We also strongly encourage the use of carbon monoxide detectors, especially if your home has a wood burning fireplace or stove. From all of us at Nelson Fire Rescue we want to wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year. Len MacCharles Fire Chief, Nelson Fire Rescue Services

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

No Resolutions

This is the first year in a long time that I will not be setting any new year’s resolutions for myself. To me, it’s a goal that I intended to accomplish, but within a week’s time I have forgotten all about it. It simply gets buried among the other responsibilities I have to attend to. Is setting a New Year’s resolution really something you should do? It depends on whether or not you set a goal for yourself that you can achieve. Don’t set something too easy, as that can make the accomplish-

ment seem minor and not worth the effort. Instead if you plan on setting a new year’s resolution, make it something that takes time and effort and is a worth achievement to accomplish. If the goal you set is too easy, then it makes it not worth the effort, a more difficult goal reaps greater rewards. So should you make a goal for yourself? Despite my not doing so, it’s not such a bad idea. Give yourself something to accomplish if you see fit and have the initiative to see it through.

Merry Christmas Fairy Godparents, from Gabi Dearest kind and wonderful Kootenay people, I’m sending you a Christmas card with the latest pictures of Gabi taken recently at a mall. She got to talk to Santa, but she didn’t like him very much. She refused to sit on his lap and when he said, “kiss me” in English she yelled - she only likes daddy, her grandparents and big sister Amber to speak English with her. Still, she did have a good time touching all the decorations and watching the artificial snow fall from the ceiling. She is a little more than three and seven months years old now. We still haven’t sent her to daycare as the risk of infection from other children is too great. We’ll look into home or small

group schooling in the future. She is starting to spell words and knows the name of many of the streets in her neighborhood. She is fearless in the playground and especially loves slides - the bigger the better! I hope you enjoy the recent picture. Gabi is doing great and she couldn’t have done it without your help. Your contributions have helped to pay for some of the treatments, doctor visits and medicines not covered by the public medical system in Chile. The result is a longer life and more time out of the hospital. While there still is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis, the life expectancy is increasing for those who receive proper care. All the best to you and yours, Eric “Leo” Eastman Riccio
