Lion in a circle

photo by Nelson Becker Artist Carolynne Carruthers demonstrates her newest artwork, now on display at the Full Circle Cafe

Carolynne Ann Quesnel Carruthers grew up in Hills, BC. Her masks are on display at the Full Circle Cafe on Baker Street. “Masks hold a special place in my heart. Not only are they satisfying in

all their three dimensional glory, with no need for specific shading to make them look like something that goes against their material’s nature. A face is something everyone sees, we look at rain on glass, tree bark, clouds and

cannot help but see a face. This universal aspect of human nature makes for an artists playground and places masks in their very particular place in my heart,” says Carruthers. submitted

Pink T-Shirt Day Wednesday, Feb. 25

Solidarity against bullying

Bullying is still a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and on the Internet. Each year, on Pink TShirt Day, the public is encouraged to wear something pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying anywhere. The local campaign started in 2009 when Anne at Annie’s Boutique in Nelson BC bought and donated 300 pink t-shirts to the area schools. In recent years, we were able to expand on the offering with the help of our wonderful sponsors and we have given thousands of t-shirts to our local schools. Annie’s Boutique closed its doors in 2014, but a society was formed to keep our local Pink T-Shirt day campaign going. www.nobullies.ca https://www.facebook.com/ events/615520805236677/

Nelson Police: impaired driver, intoxicated bridge climbers

On Friday, Feb. 6 at approximately 12:25 a.m. NPD members were alerted to a vehicle driving in erratic fashion in the downtown core area. The female driver, identified as a 60 year old resident of Nelson, displayed symptoms of impairment by alcohol and became uncooperative and resistant during detention for Impaired Driving. The female refused to provide a breath demand as directed and was therefore arrested for Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample, Impaired Driving, Obstruct Police Officer and Resisting Arrest. A Nelson Court appearance is scheduled

for May 19, 2015 in relation to these charges On Sunday, Feb. 8 at approximately 2:30 a.m. NPD members were conducting patrols along Hwy 3A at the Nelson Orange Bridge before being flagged over by a pedestrian on the bridge. The pedestrian alerted the members to two males that had climbed to the top of the bridge structure. Members located the males perched atop the bridge structure and advised them that Nelson Fire Department would be attending the scene to extract them from the bridge safely. The males, both under the influence of

alcohol, disregarded police direction and climbed down the structure prior to Nelson Fire Department assistance. Both males were arrested upon arriving on the bridge deck. One male, a 26 year old resident of Nelson, was arrested for being Intoxicated in a Public Place. The other male, a 22 year old resident of New Zealand, was released without charge under the Liquor Act. Both males face a possible charge of Mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada and/or a charge under the Trespass Act. submitted by the Nelson City Police

On Monday, Feb. 9 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Castlegar RCMP responded to a disturbance in the 1000 block of 7th Avenue in Castlegar. As firearms were involved in the incident, the SED Containment Team and Emergency Response Team were activated and attended the scene. The immediate area was evacuated as a public safety precaution. After many

hours of negotiations with the male who remained inside his residence, he was subsequently arrested without incident early this morning and remains in police custody. There were no injuries. The 47 year old Castlegar man is facing various charges which include Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Uttering Threats, and various firearms

related offences. The Castlegar RCMP and KBRD General Investigative Section continue to investigate the matter. Should the public have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Castlegar RCMP at 250365-7721. submitted by the Castlegar RCMP

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

The Language Barrier

The language barrier is something that affects many of us who are culturally alienated in a certain circumstance. From when we travel to a foreign land with a foreign tongue not familiar to us, to visitors from another country who don’t know many of our words. It’s a topic that will affect most of us at one point or another. This issue does however have a few quick fixes that make communicating with those unfamiliar with your native language a much easier process. One great idea is educating yourself

with the language in question beforehand,- a few key terms is all that’s really necessary, as it will make communication, at the very least, possible. Having these phrases readily available in a book is also essential. English is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn, so it comes as no surprise that many visitors to our country may not be familiar with our language. The same can be said for us when we visit other countries. What’s important is to not get discouraged and be kind and respectful, especially when we have no idea what someone may be saying.

If we eat food that is not nutrient dense, has bacteria on it due to processing, or has been exposed to pesticides, we stand to get sick. Do as the French started in 2013. See video - ‘ Intermarche, Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables ‘- where they started a campaign to stop food wastage by celebrating and selling food with imperfections at a lower cost.

I go to many different stores to find the specific products I want. I do not like the trend towards packaging of produce - wasteful (both the actual packaging and the portioning - you can’t buy just what you need) and unnecessary Sometimes I’ll pay more even though I know I can get it cheaper at another store just for convenience.
