Nelson Police Reports: Hydro phone scam On Tuesday, Mar. 3, the Nelson Police Department received a call for service from a local business that received a telephone call from a person claiming to be employed by a local hydro company. “smart pay” cards/vouchers and followed the instructions provided. The Nelson Police Department wants to take this opportunity to warn residents and businesses of scams, and to advise that if you receive a call similar to this, do not provide any personal or account information. In addition, to check the validity of the

Opinion&Editorial Women’s Day, Men’s Day, People’s Day, every day

Sunday, March 8 is International Women’s Day. Out of curiosity, I searched By Nelson Becker and discovered that November 19th is International Men’s Day. From each of the official websites, I looked at the objectives and reasons for those days. On their site, International Women’s Day says “International Women’s Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.” International Men’s Day says “Objectives of International Men’s Day include a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality,

My Opinion

and highlighting positive male role models.” I found this interesting, as both sentences could be used be used for either website just by substituting “woman” for “man” and vice versa, but the objectives are not the same for both gender days. International Women’s Day is about celebrating successes. International Men’s Day is about the struggles that men still have to go through. Neither day acknowledges the other gender or people elsewhere on the spectrum of gender self-identification. Yes, I celebrate International Women’s Day. At that very same time I celebrate International Men’s Day and also I celebrate the acheivements and

The Decline of Music

The decline of music is a multi-faceted topic, with so many angles to tackle it from, but I will do what I can. There are ultimately two points I would like to bring up and that would be the decline in the quality as well as the decline in sales. One interesting study that I read stated that pitch content in music has decreased. What this means is that the amount of different chords and melodies have gone down. What I gathered, is that music requires less effort as the audience for it

is holding to it to a lesser standard as recycled chords and song structures seem to be okay in their eyes. Music sales have also been down but this can be simply attributed to the rise in the pirating of music, as it’s far easier to do so than to simply buy music. I may sound harsh on the current state of the music industry but there are many positive things to say as well. Popular music quality wise may not be up to par with past standards but much of the independent music scene is far superior in my opinion.

Spencer Pollard is a young man living in Nelson BC with an interest in digital arts and writing. His ideas are of benefit to all of Nelson, and to stroke his abnormally large ego

raising of conciousness of all people of this world not matter what gender(s) they self-identify. It is impossible to separate a gender from another. Let us all continue to raise our own awareness and that of others equality. On Monday, Mar. 9, the Women’s Centre is showing the film Girl Rising in celebration of International Women’s Day 7 p.m. at the Civic Theatre. (See article page 6) Two days earlier, on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 8 p.m., Transconnect will be celebrating an “All Bodies Swim Night” at the Nelson Aquatic Center. (see calander listing page 7) I hope both events are well supported by our community by good turn-outs.
