The new exhibition at the Nelson Public Library nearly jumps off the wall with beautiful, punchy abstract building community since 1988 paintings by Kaslo artist Rielle Oswald. Nelson Fire Rescue: fatal house fire
At 4:05 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 8 the Nelson Fire Department responded to a report of a large fire at Granite and Fofonow Road. Both on duty members responded immediately with all additional members responding from home. Beasley and Blewett Volunteer Fire Departments also responded to assist with water delivery as there are no hydrants in that area. Upon arrival of the first crew, the structure was completely involved in fire as well as multiple vehicles and outbuildings. The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring properties. Initial reports were that
there was a possibility that there were two occupants inside. Subsequently one was later located in town, unfortunately the other individual was found deceased in the fire. RCMP, the Coroner’s Office, and Nelson Fire Department are investigating the fire. Nelson firefighters responded to the incident with two fire engines, one tender truck, and two utility vehicles. Beasley VFD responded with three pieces of apparatus, and Blewett VFD with one. No firefighter injuries were reported as a result of this incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Nelson Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure that they have working smoke alarms and that the batteries should be changed with the time change. submitted by Nelson Fire Rescue fire victim identified The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of the man who was found deceased in the fire. He was Ryan Randell Tapp, aged 28, of Nelson. The family of Mr. Tapp has been notified of his death. submitted by the BC Coroners Service
The Castlegar RCMP Detachment is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Russell David SAPRIKEN (45 years old). SAPRIKEN has ten warrants for his arrest for driving while prohibited, breach of recognizance, theft under $5000, and failing to appear. The charges stem from a number of incidents
which occurred between October 2013 and November 2014 in the Trail and Castlegar areas. SAPRIKEN failed to attend court to answer to these matters and subsequently the warrants were issued. It is believed that SAPRIKEN is still in the community but actively avoiding police detection. SAPRIKEN is described as having
short grey/brown hair, blue eyes, 5’10”, approximately 160 pounds. He also has limited use of his right arm. SAPRIKEN has a criminal history and should not be approached if observed or encountered. Any information regarding SAPRIKEN’s whereabouts should be reported to the RCMP. submitted by the Castlegar RCMP
On Thursday, Mar. 5 Mr. Christopher Mark Duncan became police constable #83, after being sworn in by Provincial Court Judge Donald L. Sperry. Constable Duncan joins the Nelson Police Department after having served for a combined total of eight years with both the British Columbia South Coast Transit Authority Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Chris’s policing experience consists of stints in general duty, school liaison, the major crimes sex offence unit and as a police liaison with the Canadian Border Services Agency.
He also trained with the Okanagan Emergency Response Team in his capacity as a police dog handler, and worked at enforcing federal legislation as a member of the RCMP’s Border Integrity program. Constable Duncan is a fully qualified helicopter pilot and has experience as a firefighter with Vancouver and London Fire Departments and the Greater Vancouver Heli-Attack Fire Crew. Chris is married to his wife Rebecca. They own a small hobby farm in the Maple Ridge area where they raise horses, cows and chick-
ens. They plan on continuing that idyllic lifestyle, having just recently purchased a property in the Blewett area. When not policing or working on the farm, Chris enjoys running and fitness work outs, kayaking, restoring vehicles and rebuilding and racing motorcycles. The City of Nelson, the Nelson Police Board and the men and women of the Nelson Police Department are proud to welcome this highly qualified and experienced police officer to the NPD family. submitted by the Nelson City Police

Survey&Editorial One of the smartest developments this community has ever undertaken is By Nelson Becker a commitment to have a continuous waterfront walkway from one end of our community to the other. This
Waterfront Walkway
was done mainly for us. At the same time it has become one of our major tourist activities. But all is not perfect with this great idea and committment. For one thing, we have not described exactly what a waterfront walkway is and we have ended up with a dirt path
in front of our mall and a narrow, uneven walkway near John’s Walk. What improvements would you like to make if you were in charge of the waterfront walkway? One thing I would do, would be to put a boardwalk on the lakeside in front of the mall. What about you?
This Week’s Survey Question Do you think that Nelson’s waterfront walkway could use improvement? What would you do to improve the whole path or just a section of it? Tell us your ideas!

My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
The Sound and the Fury
We all have sounds that bring us much agony and despair. Whether it’s the sound of popcorn crunching or the classic nails on chalkboard, these sounds are everywhere. There is however a more scientific reason for the annoyance these sounds bring us… Misophonia means “hatred of sound” and is a rare neuropsychiatric disorder, which make certain noises trigger negative emotional responses. This is one way in which sounds affect us in a more negative way. What more com-
monly gives us a negative response however is a part of the brain known as the amygdala as it overrides the hearing process of the brain, which gives the emotional response. This causes a spike in emotional activity making the aggravating sounds far more noticeable then any other sounds within the vicinity. This is just a quick look into my findings however I’m sure there is far more to the subject available online. Hopefully this sheds some light on why we respond so negatively to certain sounds.
Spencer Pollard is a young man living in Nelson BC with an interest in digital arts and writing. His ideas are of benefit to all of Nelson, and to stroke his abnormally large ego
