Flightfest 2011 Saturday, August 6
The Nelson Pilots Association will be hosting the annual Nelson BC Flightfest and Airport Appreciation Day on Saturday August 6, 2011. This aviation event attracts both locals and folks flying in from across BC, Alberta, the US and beyond. Nelson’s Municipal Airport will be buzzing with activity for young and old as well as pilots and non pilots. Featured will be several renowned Canadian airshow performers such as Bill Carter, John Mrazek, Paul Hajduk. Also making an appearance will be the Canadian Military with two aircraft doing flying displays as well as on static display all day Saturday. Staff of Nelson & District Credit Union present Lilith Swetland, project administrator and Diane Ermacora, president of the Circle of Habondia Lending Society, $2500 on behalf of their credit union members. The money will help fund a portion of Habondia’s Community WISH Project asset building program. CBT dollars for youth Columbia Basin Trust has a new program to support youth in Basin communities. Community Directed Youth Funds (CDYF) will be piloted in six communities and their surrounding areas this fall. CDYF targets youth ages 12-19 and will provide each area with $100,000 over four years to increase activities, opportunities and services for youth. The program will be available to the remainder of the Basin over the next two years. “The intent of Community Directed Youth Funds is to
put resources in the hands of communities so they can enhance local opportunities and meet local youth priorities in their regions,” said Garry Merkel, CBT Chair, Board of Directors. Merkel went on to say, “Youth are the future of the Basin and as such are an important area for CBT to be investing funds.” Guidelines and applications will be available in the fall, but those wanting to better understand the program are encouraged to call Wayne Lundeberg at 1.250.304.1625 or email cdyf@cbt.org with “subscribe to CDYF info” in the subject line to receive program updates. -submitted

You can travel to studios and archives that aren’t normally open, see demonstrations, new exhibitions and collections or meet people behind the scenes. St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral Church Tour
In addition to half-timbered and carved wood architectural highlights, the Church contains 16 memorial stained glass windows, including the remarkable Good Shepherd window, as well as numerous memorial plaques and furniture.
During this year’s Columbia Basin Cultural Tour discover one of Nelson’s Heritage jewels and enjoy the “A Cathedral Whispers” presentation on the magnificent memorial stained glass windows at St.Saviour’s Anglican Church. The Church, located at the corner of Silica and Ward Streets, will be open Saturday August 13 from 11am to 5pm and Sunday August 14 from 1 pm till 5pm as part of the Tour. In addition to this; at 2 pm each day Local history researcher, Greg Scott, will give a half-hour presentation highlighting the people and history of the 16 memorial stained glass windows and some of the memorial plaques in the Church. St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral is a by-law designated Heritage Church built in 1898 and rebuilt in 1929 after a disastrous fire. It is an excellent example of Gothic Perpendicular church architecture and its impressive size and detailing make the building a stand-out among much smaller, and very simply detailed Protestant churches. The Church is also open for self-guided tours 11 am to 3 pm Monday to Saturday inclusive, during the months of July and August. Admission is free to the daily tours, though donations are accepted and books detailing the church’s history are available. The Church is also open Sundays for regular service at 10:30 am.

Ankors holds Art Slam ANKORS (West Kootenay Boundary AIDS Network, Outreach and Support Society) is holding Nelson’s first ever 72 Hour Art Slam as a major fundraiser this summer! An art slam is an art competition with a twist. Teams or individuals will have 72 hours to create and submit an original piece of artwork. Participants can submit a film, poetry, theatre, song, painting, sculpture, dance—any type of artist expression.
The only rules are the theme and prop (as given at the kick-off meeting) must be present in the final product, and the deadline is absolute. 100% of the money raised from the event goes to supporting individuals affected by HIV/ AIDS, such as subsidizing health care costs. However, this event also aims to join the community together through art. By keeping the event parameters open, we hope to draw all different genres of art and artists.
KSA Faculty Exhibition in Grand Forks The next exhibition at Gallery 2 celebrates contemporary craft and art created by 24 artists who teach and work at the Kootenay School of the Arts at Selkirk College in Nelson. The Faculty and staff have dedicated this exhibition to a former colleague and friend Tom Lynn. Tom was involved in the early developmental stages of the school and was instrumental in the establishment of the school’s Metal Program. This important exhibition reveals the diversity of ideas and materials found in the work of these art educators and the quality of art and craft produced and taught in the West Kootenay.
The competition is from August 19th to 22nd, with a Showcase event at 7pm, Friday August 26th at the Prestige Lakeside Resort. The Showcase will include a wine & cheese reception and an art silent auction. Tickets are $10-20 sliding scale and available at ANKORS (101 Baker Street Nelson). It will also explore the traditions behind each artist’s practice and how they transform the traditional into the contemporary. The artists share their relationship to materials, tools and techniques, as well as the collaborative relationship that develops between mentor and student. This exhibition entitled, Connections Materialized, will open with a reception on Saturday, August 13, from13pm, with an opportunity for the public to meet the artists and learn about their diverse disciplines. The exhibition will run until October 9, 2011. Gallery 2 is located at 524 Central Avenue and is open from Monday to Sunday, 9am-5pm during August and Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm during September.

New resident at Oxygen Mutya Macatumpag is a multi-disciplinary and independent dance artist, actress, vocalist, choreographer and visual artist. She is also an instructor of a dance fusion called “Free Form Footwork”. In 2010 Mutya was seen hitting the stages in Montreal, Quebec, performing vocals with artist Clara Furey at the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal, and solo dance performances at the Perverse Cite Festival and the Montreal International Woman’s Conference. This Summer Mutya will be fulfilling a one month residency in Nelson, BC with Oxygen Arts Centre, where she will be teaching dance and developing and presenting a collaborative work with partner, visual artist and writer Monica Hepburn. Mutya Macatumpag and Monica Hepburn will be collaborating on exciting work during their August residency at Oxygen. They will also be offering workshops for youth and adults.

An Evening with Wiñay Taki Ayllu

Mighty Popo with Papa Roots and Kirby Saturday, August 13th The Royal, 9pm The highly talented Juno winner is bringing his African rhythm & roots band to the Kootenay’s for a very special performance. You could say that the Mighty Popo is a Rwandan/Burundian refugee/survivor whose music is steeped in African tradition, but you’d hardly be getting at the whole story
of one of Canada’s greatest rising stars. Recent history has made Rwanda and Burundi a kind of shorthand for violence, chaos and genocide. One might think that all music, dance, laughter, civility and joie de vivre in those countries had disappeared into a vortex of despair. Popo – a Rwandan born in a Burundian refugee community – is evidence to the contrary. He is a person of enormous
charm, wit, resilience and, yes, joie de vivre. This is a unique opportunity to see one of the world’s finest performers in a small club. Your survey comments - Do you drink tap water? It is filtered through a home system so is clean. In spite of all the “hoopla” I think we have safe drinking water. I prefer not to consume chlorine so filter my water. We have a well at 140 feet deep in the Slocan Valley...it’s great! chlorean. I’m not sure about how it affects my body. don’t want to ingest chlorine or other people’s prescription drugs It is safe, clean, inexpensive and does not come in plastic bottles. The City of Nelson has always had good quality water.

Bring on the water meter! I boil tap water and cool it, and it doesn’t taste like chlorine. I also get spring water from a friend’s rural place weekly which is mostly what i drink.

Frequently Asked Questions How did you get my email address? The emails that we use for the Kootenay Express Update are emails of people who have done business with the Express Newspaper or are emails we have received by personal request to be on our list. What is the purpose of the Kootenay Express Update? The purpose of the Kootenay Express Update is to provide the service of a community newspaper with such features as an events calendar, classifieds, opinions, diversions, for the greater community of Nelson and area. How can my friends receive the Kootenay Express Update? You can send your friends our email and they can respond with the word “subscribe”, or “newsletter” or “update”. What is the privacy policy of The Express? We will never share your email with anyone outside of The Express. We feel
you are part of our family. Is The Express open for Editorial Submissions? Yes. We also want to support the nonprofits of our community and we welcome their editorial submissions. What happened to The Express Newspaper? The Express Newspaper existed as a print version for 22 years, but it could no longer compete against the big corporations for advertising. We are committed to being of community service and we are now in the process of creating the Kootenay Express Update as an alternative to the print copy. There are obvious benefits to an electronic Express Newspaper. We don’t have any printing costs or post office distribution costs. There is less restriction on space. Recipients can print out the pages that they so desire. There are also some disadvantages. Not everybody is internet connected. Reading off a screen is a different
experience than reading off of paper. The Express Update seems to me to be a valuable way to publicize my business. How do I place advertising in the update? We are still working on this because in setting a price for advertising we want to assure ourselves, and you, that you are getting the correct value for your dollars. We encourage you to get in touch with us so that we may begin this discussion with interested local businesses. How does the Kootenay Express Update support itself? At the moment, that’s a very good question. The Kootenay Express Update lives on a subsidy that it is receives from me, Nelson Becker. In the future, the Update will have to support itself. We are in the process of determining advertising value, as well as looking at other methods of raising the necessary funds.
