Marlene Machmer a wildlife biologist and ecologist will give a presentation on the yellow-breasted chat, a federally endangered warbler species of the area. The talk will focus on the ecology and management of the yellow-breasted chat, specifically on the small south eastern population confirmed breeding near Waneta in 2004. For more info: 250-362-7424

From the thickblooded hearts of the ancient caves, to the ethereal heaven of our light-speed future – the Old Trouts will explain where we went wrong and how we might find our way once again. What’s in the Cupboard? Recipes from the Nelson Food Cupboard Overnight Oatmeal ½ cup large flake oats OR ¼ cup large flake oats and ¼ cup bulghur wheat ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Handful (or more) of raisins 2 cups water 1 apple, peeled and grated ¼ cup maple syrup Prepare before you go to bed. Oatmeal in the morning will never be any easier than this. Put the oats, bulghur, salt, cinnamon, raisins, and water in a pot that has a tightfitting lid. Stir everything up well and bring to a boil. As soon as the boil starts, put the lid on the pot and take the pot off the heat. In the morning add the grated apple and maple syrup. Heat and eat.

West Kootenay Traffic Services: a busy year In 2013 the West Kootenay Traffic Services andWest Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit had a very busy year. We unfortunately had nine fatalities in the area. Of these nine fatalities two were alcohol related and two were pedestrian fatalities. The other causal factors were speed, mechanical or distracted driving. Our condolences go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones.
Drinking and driving, seatbelt and distracted driving are leading factors in serious or fatal collisions. This year 90 impaired drivers were taken of the road and 120 suspensions were issued in the West Kootenay Boundary area. The units served 1,430 seatbelt tickets and 325 distracted driving charges (cell phone). Drug possession seems to be on the
rise with 500 drug seizures. Excessive speed charges which goes with a 7 day seizure of the vehicle is also on the rise with 63 seizures. The units served over 7,300 violation tickets. The West Kootenay Traffic and IRSU units are striving to reduce crashes and injuries to our motoring public by enforcement and education in high crash areas. We urge all people
to slow down, buckle up, stay off the cell phone and get a designated driver. The consequences of an impaired driving charge financially and emotionally on an individual are tremendous. RCMP news: fire to cop car At 2:45 a.m. on December 19, 2013 Slocan Lake RCMP responded to report of a police vehicle on fire in front of the Slocan Lake RCMP Detachment in New Denver, BC. Police attended to discover the front of the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The New Denver Fire Department attended and were able to extinguish the fire prior to it spreading to the detachment. No injuries were sustained as
a result of the fire, however the vehicle was burnt beyond repair. The vehicle and scene were examined; evidence obtained indicates that the fire was suspicious in nature. Science Fiction: The Most Relevant Literature
Despite the rise in literature aimed at teenagers and the female audience, I feel that science fiction is the most relevant of all literature. It can inspire and entertain but at the same time give the reader food for thought among other useful ideologies. Science Fiction is composed of some of the best ideas in literature conjuring incredible stories and incredible characters without the restrictions so many other genres provide. The stories present contain all of the hallmarks of a

Development issues be proactive no reactive The OCP, which is short for Official By Nelson Becker Community Plan, was mandated by the provincial government some years ago. Part of its purpose is to have community participation in future development issues. This is really good
because this means we have thought about future developments before we have developers come in. We can tell developers ‘no we don’t want this’ or ‘yes that fits our community plan.’ If we think ahead, we can solicit development that meets our community interests.
As much as we would like, we can never think about everything, so developers will come to us with ideas we have not thought about. We must be prepared, so that they don’t push us, and we can develop into the kind of community we all want to live in.
