Harry Manx coming to Capitol
Harry Manx has been dubbed an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. His unique sound is bewitching and deliciously addictive to listen to. Blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you’ll get Manx’s unique “mysticssippi” flavour. It’s hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more. http://harrymanx.com https://tickets.capitoltheatre. bc.ca/

Nelson Broadband on its way
Tammy Darough, General Manager at RHC Insurance in Nelson, is looking forward to taking advantage of Nelson’s new superfast, fibre-optic network to help service her clients faster and better.
In 2014 accessing high-speed broadband will be a reality for Nelson businesses. Years of research, planning and hard work are paying off. One of the biggest drivers behind investing in a fibre-optic network is the economic stimulus that a state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure creates for a community. Increasingly, many types of businesses benefit from access to a high-speed fibre-optic network - to satisfy their customers and to remain competitive in the digital age. The springtime launch of the Nelson broadband website will help keep businesses informed of everything to do with broadband, including new developments. www.futures.bc.ca

Also by participating in seed swaps, such as Seedy Saturday, you can obtain local growing knowledge, find saved seeds that come from plants that thrive in our area’s climate and soil and meet people who share the same interest all at the same time. Entry to this event is also by donation. More info email: markets@ecosociety.ca http://ecosociety.ca/

Dan Frechette, Monday, Feb. 24. I am really proud to be able to present Dan Frechette By Nelson Becker to the Nelson audience. Dan has been performing for many years. He is a singer-songwriter of extraordinary talent. He plays guitar and harmonica; recalling a style of folk music that has never lost its interest. While his style has a sound of familiarity to it, his lyrics represent the colour of today. He sings of life, love, and optimism. Listen to his freshly release album “Genuine Heart” here: http://officialramblingdanfrechette. bandcamp.com/ Benefit for Stacey, Friday, Feb. 21. Tickets are almost sold for this support event for Stacey Lock. Stacey is an important part of this community helping people on our streets who
may be having problems and helping them find the resources that they need. She has had an operation and needs an extended recover time and is unable to work. This benefit will both give her emotional support and financial support until she is able to get back to work. For tickets contact Mark at 250-551-0837. Transconnect Coffee House, Saturday, Feb 22. Expressions Night Cafe is hosting “gender Expressions” a coffee house organized by out transgender community for everyone. There will be arts and music to celebrate all genders in our community. This promises to be an exciting and colourful event. Open-mic every Wednesday. Last Wednesday’s open-mic was outrageous! While we open the Cafe at 6 p.m. and would like the music to start as soon as possible, in the past musicians and audience didn’t seem to
show up until 8 p.m. Last Wednesday performers and audience showed up early. The first act started at 7 p.m. and after 25 different performers the evening ended at 11:30 p.m. This area has an emmence amount of diverse and talented musicians and performers. If you’re a performer and would like a chance at open-mic, we start signing people up at 6 p.m., mostly on a first -come, first-serve basis. Expressions Cafe serves as much locally-made, or locally accessed food and drinks as possible. We buy our teas and spices, along with juice, pop and coconut water from the Kootenay Coop. Our coffee comes from John Ward coffee, hot chocolate from Ambrosia on the East Shore, and we serve cupcakes from Lucky Cupcake company. We’re always looking for new products that can both satisfy our audience as well as support our community. express@expressnews.bc.ca

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Modern Films: Good or Bad?
A lot of scrutiny is levied upon many of the modern films. It’s popular to hate on anything new when it comes to the hardcore fans of cinema, but is it just popular opinion or is there something more? According to a fairly recent study from Nature Scientific Reports (http:// bit.ly/1bJMOZh) this may be true. There are two points I’d like to make about this sort of study. Firstly, the study is based more so on how we discuss the movies rather then the actual films themselves. A second point is this gener-
ally links towards the bigger blockbusters and generally more popular movies. If you go the lower budget or independent route when it comes to movies you’ll find that they have more of that creativity modern cinema is missing. So if you feel like harping on movies for lack of creativity, check out the independent film scene. There are plenty of modern classics being pumped out in both independent and even the more popular movies still make for great films. Check them out and come to your own conclusions on the state of modern cinema.

Electric transportation
By Nelson Becker
The City of Nelson has recently put out a proposal for creative bike racks (see page 7). We applaud the City for acknowledging the
need to make it easier for non-polluting means of transportation. There is more the City can do, such as having designated parking areas for small cars. Also, it is clear our future will involve electric vehicles. We already have a
significant amount of electric bikes; motorcycles and cars are coming! Some of these new bike racks should include the ability to charge batteries and eventually Nelson should have charging stations for vehicles.
We’re moving the survey! We’re moving the survey! Watch for this week’s survey question in the Monday Mini. Last week’s suvrvey response: The Sochi Olympics and you 1. Are you following the Sochi Olympics?
25% YES - 18.8% NO - 43.8% LITTLE BIT - 12% DON’T CARE 2. Are watching them on TV, the internet, or reading about it?
54.5% TV - 45.5% INTERNET - 0% READING 3. If the Olympic organizers are listening, what would you like to say to them? North Korea should be allowed to participate because that was the whole point of the Olympics! Set aside your differences and play. The Olympics are a scam. That human rights are just as important as any competion. Discrimination and brutal actions against those speaking up for their rights must be recognized. These games are too similiar to the ‘36 games in Berlin. These
games should have been moved or cancelled. The olympics are no longer for athletes. It is a corporate greed fest event which has become completely tainted. Tone down the glitz, keep the games simpler (will cost less) and focus on the athletes, their sport, and what it takes to compete at this leve Wake up! Join the 21st Century!
All olympics are now politicized, commercialized, and scandalized. They must be totally re-invented to get SPORT back into them. And stop pretending amateurs participate. There should be an acknowledgement of how much money is spent to support each athlete. feed the hungry. Go Canada!
