Keegan and his family were deeply concerned when seven members of his family living in the Philippines went missing following the devastating typhoon that hit the island nation this past November. The event motivated Keegan to initiate the fundraiser to assist the victims of the typhoon. “The tragedy initially received a great deal of publicity, but sadly it seems to have almost been forgotten about. It was truly a heartfelt evening. It didn’t stop there, on Monday night Dan Frechette showed up to entertain us with his incredible guitar and harmonica playing and musical poetry. When he comes back again, which I’m positive he will, be sure to catch his talented performance!

A 37 year old Lillooet man is in Police custody after an incident that occurred in downtown Castlegar in the early evening hours of Tuesday, Feb. 18. It is believed that the male was travelling through Castlegar on his way to Lillooet. RCMP received several calls of someone in the neighbourhood driving a vehicle intentionally into cars that were parked in peoples’ driveways. The male driver then abandoned his car on a lawn and was standing nearby. When a few people tried to approach him, he pulled a knife and waved them off. When Police arrived, the male still had the knife in his possession. He eventually dropped the knife very close to his feet. The male was sprayed with OC spray, and after a significant struggle, he was taken into custody. One officer suffered a shoulder injury while attempting to place the male in the police car. Winter Safety

Although winter will most likely be over in the next month or so, it’s important to not test the elements and to rely on good judgment as well as a few safety tips. The following tips are pretty standard fare but they are also used far less then they should be, the people who don’t use them can end up as an unfortunate statistic. Being well dressed is probably the most important tip that I can think of. Even if you spend most of the days indoors, it’s still

important to dress warmly if you encounter some sort of mishap along the way. One of the possible mishaps could be due to unsatisfactory winter tires, so get a reliable pair of tires before hitting the road. Basic tips but tips that people seemingly forget. It’s simple, don’t put it off and prioritize it. By doing so you put the risk of suffering an accident off by a significant percentage. Stay safe even if winter is nearly through, and please be careful. We can’t afford to have any more accidents.

Happy Birthday to the City of Nelson!

By Nelson Becker

Since March 4 is our birthday, why don’t we truly acknowledge it and create a nonstat holiday “Nelson Day.” Lets celebrate

ourselves. We were born in 1897. The Post Office demanded that we have name chosen for ourselves by a certain date. Two family’s were debating of which of their names we would take on. As

the debate raged on the deadline passed and the Post Office named us after the least controversial person at the time. The first Lieutenant Governor of BC, Hugh Nelson. I’m not sure he was ever in our town.

What is it about Nelson that you would like to celebrate?

Watch for this week’s survey question in the Monday Mini. If you are not a subscriber to the Mini you can join our mailing list here: Results and comments will be posted in Friday’s Express News Update.

Last week’s survey response: What is stopping you from buying an electric vehicle? 73.7% Cost 5.3% Style 10.5% No local dealers 10.5% No local service

the cost extends to the whole cost accounting of manufacturing electric cars--everything I read says they have a huge negative carbon footprint. As well as the cost of electricity--my hydro bill has gone up 300% since I wired my house, I certainly don’t want the extra charge of a car. And how can hydro if its generated from nucular, coal, or IPP be considered green? Presently, my gasoline bill for my efficient toyota is about $100/month and my insurance is the same. My insurance for a new prius would be a lot more. We need major fixits on the oil/tarsands industry as well as more solar/wind innovations. I need a small four wheel drive with

payments under 500 month Can’t find one in Canada I am a senior on a low fixed income thus a new car of any kind is out of the question. I own an older car which has the best in low emissions. As I see the federal government subsidizing big car manufacturing in Canada I am appalled. That money could go to electric/solar cars and infrastructure. I am interested, and when there are more in the area, I’d look into it. The average person/family who are living paycheque to paycheque couldn’t /can’t afford to buy an electric vehicle.

I wonder if they have enough h/p Battery recycling issues I drive too much for work 4wd All of the above

I am not completely convinced they are so “green” when you look at how much energy is used just to make them by the time all the parts are shipped worldwide plusthe batteries are a huge issue for recycling I don’t want to own two vehicles. I can make do with an e-bike for local travel in the summer, but still need a vehicle for driving to far away places (Vancouver or Spokane, etc.) I hope the car co-op will buy one and people can save money by finding alternate ways to charge it such as microhydro or solar. Also we have plenty of hydro-electric electricity.
