my senior dog’s bed from in front of my house on lower Carbonate near Kootenay Street please bring it back? I’m worried someone may have mistook it for a free bin item, it’s not free, it’s his bed that he sleeps on about 20 hours out of the day. He’s really old and his achy bones need that soft bed to rest. He also has a skin condition that another dog could contract if they lay on that bed. Please bring it back, throw it on the porch if it’s raining. Thank you.

Carmanah

The band, Carmanah, consisting of Laura Mina Mitic, Pat Ferguson, Cody Alan Gregory and Steve Biggs, embraces the energy of the beautiful west-coast of Canada. Carmanah has captivated audiences of all ages and musical preferences with a sound that incorporates folk, funk, rock, reggae and country. Their instrumentation includes building community since 1988 fiddle, guitar, flute, djembe, mandolin, and of course, vocals, drums and bass. On May 16, the band released their second album,

titled Out of the Woodwork, and are coming to Nelson as part of a three-week tour of Western Canada in support of that release. Themes of environmental concern appear throughout the band’s work, beginning with their name, Carmanah, in honour of the many people that protested to keep the many old growth trees in the Carmanah Valley of Vancouver Island safe from logging companies in 1988. hear Carmanah at: http://carmanahband.ca/ music-2

RCMP news: searches end

Hume wins firedrill competition

On Tuesday, May 20, the search for the three youths presumed drowned in Slocan Lake was suspended by the RCMP. The 10 day search involved the use of the RCMP Dive Team, RCMP Helicopter, Arrow Lakes Search & Rescue, Slocan Lake Fire Dept, Vernon Search & Rescue, Bruce’s Legacy and members of the Slocan area. It is unfortunate that the youths could not be located, however, the terrain and

depth played a large part in it not being successful. The families of the youths have all been notified of the searches termination at this time. The RCMP would like to thank everyone who assisted in the search effort. On Tuesday May 20 a Nelson man was reported missing by concerned family members. He was located safely, having had vehicle troubles on a logging road. submitted by the Central Kootenay Regional RCMP

Nelson City Police news: booze, bears and counterfeit On Friday, May 16

at approximately 10:40 p.m, the Nelson Police Department responded to a teen party in the forested area of the City above LV Rogers High School and below the rail bed walking path. A 14 year old girl was in medical distress due to over consumption of alcohol and required two NPD members, BC Ambulance, the Nelson Fire Department and the help of several sober teens to transport her down very steep terrain. The Nelson Police Department would like to thank the teenagers who remained and assisted in carrying both equipment and the stretcher down the embankment to the ambulance. On Tuesday, May 20 at approximately 8 p.m, the Nelson Police Department received a report of a male brandishing a weapon and threatening people at the bus stop, Ward and Baker Street. Upon arrival, mem-

bers encountered the male who was intoxicated and breaching conditions not to consume alcohol. The male resisted arrest and a lengthy struggle ensued to gain control and place the male in the police vehicle. As a result of the event, a 33 year old male is facing charges of breaching his probation and assaulting a police officer. The Nelson Police Department received several reports over the past few days of counterfeit US Twenty and Fifty dollar bills being used throughout the City. Merchants should ensure staff are aware of the current influx of counterfeit US money and obtain a security features list for US bills either from the Internet or from a local bank. The Nelson Police Department received numerous bear calls to the areas around View Street and through to Fairview over the weekend. The Nelson Police

Department would like to remind people that without accessible garbage, the bear(s) would not stay in the City and would leave for natural food sources in the mountains. But because some residents continue to leave garbage in places bears can access, they are remaining and it is only a matter of time until a dangerous bear encounter with

people or until the bear will have to be destroyed. There is a $230 fine under the British Columbia Wildlife Act for leaving garbage in an area accessible to wildlife. As well, the Nelson Police Department requests that all bear sightings are reported to RAPP at 1.877.952.7277. submitted by the Nelson Police Department

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Why Do We Love Stupid? Stupid is as stupid does, doesn’t it? Even if we consider ourselves intelligent we have a tendency to do stupid things, so wouldn’t that make us stupid? I would disagree. I enjoy some things people would say are for the more highly intellectual and yet I also enjoy something as outrageous as Ren and Stimpy. They have moronic, idiotic adventures and yet it’s so mindlessly entertaining that I can’t look away. These idiotic escapades give us a break from a world that

can be condescending if we choose not to put our intellect to our full capacity. They also take less effort to get into, meaning those of us who don’t have much spare time can actually enjoy something and not have to be challenged intellectually. We all have guilty pleasures and some of them are downright stupid, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy them. Just try not to make these products of lunacy your priority and use your intellect when you can. After all, we don’t need any more idiots.

Opinion&Survey This Week’s Survey Question

Money cannot buy happiness but if you don’t have enough to satisfy your most basic

needs then money can help bring about satisfaction. But after your needs are met, there

doesn’t seem to be a correlation between money and happiness. There are so many factors involved

with life satisfaction, it is a hard question to even ask, but we’re going to try.

Are you satisfied with your life? Do you have what you need? Can you afford the quality foods? Can you follow your spiritual beliefs? Do you have input into the local political system? Do you have enough humour in your life? Do you have enough leisure time activities?

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/satisfied_life Watch for this week’s survey question in the Monday Mini. If you are not a subscriber to the Mini you can join our mailing list here. Results and comments will be posted in Friday’s Express News Update.

Last week’s survey response: Do you agree: Canadians should have more Statutory holidays?

Yes 36%

No 64%

Do you agree: Canada should have a Community Day Statutory holiday?

Yes 46%

No 54%

Comments:

Most don’t know why we have Victoria Day and just celebrate it as a Community Day off There should be at minimum one statutory holiday per month. If you want more family time, close all stores and pubs on Sundays so familes could be together. Did you know Canada has about the lowest number of holidays in the world among nations that actually have public holidays?? http://www.mercer.com/ press-releases/holiday-entitlementsaround-the-world As an employee, I’d love to have another day off. But who’s going to pay for it?

Not Statutory days, but rather higher mandatory minimum vacation allotments from the employers. See France, Germany, most of Europe. They have 4 to 6 weeks minimums, depending. Employers can’t afford any more holidays. If there is to be another holiday it should be the workers choice and the cost covered by that worker. Canadians are lazy and becoming a 3rd world nation. Inspire others by creating a stronger work ethic in your life! But not the last Monday in September. We already have a stat in September. We have enough....Give our community businesses a break.

Do you know how much it costs small businesses for Stats already? Alot. I love the idea of a Community day~ a theme could be utilized each year featuring a different nationality in each community with food, dance, storytelling, poetry. I would like to see this stat holiday in June or November. November would be best I think; its almost always a bleak weather month! I like the Community Day idea, but I don’t know about the September date. That’s just two weeks before Thanksgiving. How about one of the months that doesn’t already have a stat holiday, like June or March? (Although March sometimes has Easter, but then April doesn’t get one.)
