Second operatic world premiere

Puppet master, Simone Varey, (right) describes her concept for the puppetry in Jorinda with the opera’s creative team, (left to right) producer, Marty Horswill, stage director, Geoff Burns and composer and musical director, Doug Jamieson (standing).

Just three years after the premiere of its hugely successful commissioned opera, KHAOS, the Amy Ferguson Institute has announced it will now mount a second operatic world premiere by yet another Nelson-based composer. “This opportunity to mount another new opera came as a complete surprise,” said AFI president, Dianna Ducs. “We weren’t even aware that another composer of opera lived in Nelson when Doug Jamieson approached us with the offer of his new work, Jorinda.” Doug Jamieson himself will be the musical director for the show, which will open at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre in November 2015. His vision for this work was to tell the story through the use of puppetry rather than the traditional operatic form. submitted by the Amy Ferguson Institute

Exhibition Opening

Friday, June 20, 7 p.m. Kootenay Gallery of Art, 120 Heritage Way, Castlegar The exhibition, Memento Mori: Remember you must die featuring a series of paintings by Rachel Yoder, explores not only her personal struggle with and admitted fear about death but also allows the viewer to contemplate their own feelings about this often uncomfortable subject. In their exhibition Contemporary Reliquaries, Pauline Dupas, Sherlin Hendrick and Diane Burt, ask the question, ‘What happens after the body dies?’ In medieval times remains of or objects associated with a person, were held in a container or shrine referred to as a reliquary. Each of these artists interprets how this practice may be honored in a more contemporary way. The exhibits will run until August 2nd. www.kootenaygallery.com

MarketFest Returns to Baker

Water conservation measures

Friday, June 27, 6-10:30 p.m., on the 200 and 300 blocks of Baker St.

The City of Nelson is asking residents to take the following water conservation measures: Water every other day only. Premises with “even” numbered civic addresses may sprinkle on “even” numbered days of the month (ie: 2nd, 4th, 6th etc) and premises with “odd” numbered civic addresses may sprinkle on “odd” numbered days of the month (ie: 1st, 3rd, 5th etc). Water in the early morning, before 10:00 am, or early evening, after 6:00 pm. Premises with underground sprinklers should have the system checked for leaks and the timer set to only give the lawn about one hour worth of water each week. Ensure that water does not overspray onto sidewalks, driveways or roads. By reducing peak demand, we reduce our impact on water supply, distribution infrastructure, treatment infrastructure and on the environment. A Water Smart Ambassador, working with the City of Nelson and the Columbia Basin Trust, will be walking the neighbourhoods of Nelson and speaking to residents on their water usage. Residents can contact the building community since 1988 Ambassador to provide a free Lawn and Garden Sprinkler Assessment and receive a free hose timer or rain gauge. www.nelson.ca

Dancers at Marketfest 2013

The West Kootenay EcoSociety is once again bringing the legendary MarketFest back to Baker Street. This is a rain or shine event but hopefully the weather will be kind, the sun will shine, and the music will soar. MarketFest will once again have a food court area on Kootenay Street that makes it very easy for festival goers to find and choose from the wide selection of ready to eat foods that will be on hand. What better way to spend a warm summer evening then eating scrumptious fresh foods, shopping for locally made goods and listening to wonderful live music. www.ecosociety.ca/node/277 To put your business card in the Express News Update call 250-354-3910

Summer at Kokanee Park Saturday, June 28, 9 am to 9 pm at Kokanee Park Visitor Centre opens Monday, July 7 Nature Investigators Program begins

photo submitted

Kokanee Visitor Centre Naturalist Joanne Siderius will have outdoor programs for teens and youngsters this year at the Kokanee Park.

Parents struggling with how to pry their teens out of the digital world take note. This year’s array of summer programs at the Kokanee Creek Park Visitors Centre features a new series of scientific explorations designed for 11 to 16 year olds. “Kokanee Nature Investigators is a summer long program featuring five areas of study,” says the Centre’s naturalist Dr. Joanne Siderius. “We already have great programs for the younger kids, but this year we are reaching out to the older youth to give them a taste of what it’s like to do field work and observation.” The programs are free thanks to grants from the CBT and the Nelson and District Credit Union. Sign up is preferable but no one will be turned away. For a schedule of happenings at Kokanee Park vist http://ecosociety.ca/calendar

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

by Spencer Pollard

Learning to Love Math Math; the one subject many of us fear and dread. Regardless of how much many of us hate it, (myself included) knowing and understanding the fundamentals of math is important. Knowing it is the key. The first step is to adopt a more positive attitude towards it. If you don’t have one then it’s all but impossible to appreciate math in a more meaningful way. One way of looking at it is to try to look at everyday problems and solving them with mathematics.

By looking at everyday problems with this angle, you can gain some valuable insight into how things work. The only issue with taking this approach to life is making the adjustment to looking at life through another lens. I hate math and honestly I still do and I don’t think I’m alone in that. These applications however can help make math easier and are much more worthy of your time. Look at math in a more practical way and hopefully it will come easier. The keyword here is “hopefully”.

Opinion&Survey We are taking a short vacation from the weekly Survey Question watch for a new question in the July 4 issue

Last week’s survey response: Do you agree that the voting age should be lowered to 16?

Yes 49% No 51% Not ready at that age - sometimes not even interested at the legal age. Keep it as it is. I don’t want it lowered to just 16!!! 11 and up should vote. There are other ways that we can work towards engaging youth in our political process that builds knowledge and capacity to understand the importance of voting. Fifty years ago when a lot of us were growing up I would have said no. Young people today are vastly better informed, more sophisticated, more mature, more worldly than we were.

Online Voting is a necessity and make voting mandatory! This will boost our turnout rate to at least 90% range. New Zealand and Australia have mandatory voting. If you can’t go i.e. medical reason - you have the right to opt out but if not then you will be fined or sent to jail. If it is mandatory to do income taxes then why not for voting??? Most 16 year olds are not interested in knowing what is going on politically. Maybe there should be a class in school that involves more Canadian content regarding our constitution, politics, etc.

Before I had teenagers, I would have said “no”, but now that I have one that will be 16 in the not too distant future, I would say he will be totally ready to do the research and vote intelligently and with personal conviction. Now if he would just put the same effort into picking up his dirty socks off the floor... Too young to understand and bear financial/social implications of their vote. I believe the age could be lowered to 18. At that age they will have likely graduated high school and have sufficient education and knowledge to make an informed vote. Also they would be less likely to be influenced by their parents on which way to vote.

There are many 16 yr. old who are still engaged in World events through school and I think that they are still interested in who is to govern our Country than many adults who have become totally disillussioned with politics and politicans! I would be willing to try anything besides the current system which I have no faith in and is broken. This is a great idea. I would also suggest changing the first past the post system to proportional representation. Then we might see some real change instead of the same old rhetoric. It’s more important to get 95% voter turnout so that democracy can be returned to government.

Fish Heads and Flowers Fish Heads to the person who took my artwork out of the lost and found at Lakeside Park on Sunday They weren’t yours! Signed: I would like them back Flowers to summer vacation. signed: happy

Fish Heads to employees who think that janitors/ cleaners are there to clean up after them, we’re there to clean, would you do this at home? We take pride in the job that we do, please show a little bit of respect! Signed: Proud to be a janitor/cleaner

Flowers -On Monday afternoon on my way home from work I was involved in a motor vehicle crash. I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude and thanks to all the wonderful people from the Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Service, RCMP,

Emergency room doctors and nurses and many friends and neighbours who were there for me. You are wonderful people! You helped me through my shock and confusion in a most caring, compassionate and professional way! Signed: Grateful
