Rosh Hashanah Celebration
Wednesday, Sept. 24, 6 p.m. at the Adventure Hotel (formerly the New Grand), 616 Vernon Street The Annual General Meeting (AGM)--though critical to the democratic functioning of all co-operatives- is not generally known as an exciting event. This year, the Kootenay Co-op anticipates bucking that trend. “In addition to an exciting contested election,” says Marketing & Outreach Manager Jocelyn Carver, “We believe that, for members who have been following our progress with the Nelson Commons development, this will be an historic AGM with lots to celebrate”. Reports on the redevelopment of the Nelson Commons site will take place during the Member Information Meeting, after the main business of the AGM is complete. Board Elections are currently underway; if members are unable to make it to the AGM, they can vote at the store before the AGM day. http://kootenay.coop

Author Eileen Holland
Friday, Sept. 19, 2014
The Nelson Public Library celebrates its new history book with a special launch—complete with special guests and a touch of comedy. The Story of the Nelson Public Library, 1986 – 2013, written by Library board member and writer Eileen Holland, takes readers through six Chief Librarians, three referenda, and a move, with anecdotes and sidebars illustrating the Library’s storied past. Frances Welwood, author of the Library History to 1986, will appear as Mrs. A.J. McCulloch, secretary of the Nelson Library Association in 1899. Comedienne Lisel Forst is preparing a comedy sketch for the event, and of course, the author herself will be on hand. Everyone is welcome. http://nelson.bclibrary.ca/
BC Hydro crews have dewatered the Kootenay Canal as part of a project that will ensure the Kootenay Canal Generating Station maintains safe and reliable operations. The project is taking place along the Kootenay River in order to upgrade the canal’s lining. Extremely durable and specialized geotextile material designed for water storage in canals and reservoirs is being used. The material is expected to extend the lifespan of the canal by about 50 years, and the total project cost is $10 million. Approximately 108,000 square feet of the material will be installed along the north and south sides of the canal. Completed in 1976, the waterway feeds the Kootenay Canal Generating Station and is approximately 16,500 feet long. It has a water depth of 50 feet and water flows of 27,000 cubic feet per second. Walking trails along the canal will remain accessible through the duration of the maintenance work. To ensure public safety, BC Hydro has installed safety signage along the trails. The time-lapse video link below shows the dewatering of the Kootenay Canal: http://www.bchydro.com/news/ press_centre/news_releases/2014/ bc-hydro-at-work--crews-lower-thekootenay-canal-and-extend-its-.html

Police Reports: car break-ins, loud party Sometime overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, Sept 10 – 11 an unknown culprit broke into approximately 12 unlock cars in the Fairview area, removing valuables and change. The Nelson Police have recovered some of the stolen property and are trying to identify a suspect. People are reminded to remove all valuables from their cars at night and lock them. Every one of these thefts was preventable if these simple steps were taken. On Fri Sept 12 The Nelson Police were called to uphill about
a house party that was disturbing the neighborhood. Approximately 75 under aged kids were spilling into neighbors’ yards. Once there Nelson Police members were shown to an injured, severely intoxicated youth who required medical attention. BC Ambulance came and took care of this youth while the Nelson Police then attended to the matter of the disturbance the party goers were causing. Unfortunately for the community the youths were determined to keep partying as they moved through the neighborhood waking people up as
they went. For those that wish to host these parties there are fines under the local Bylaw for the excessive noise that start at $100 and can range up to $2000. Charges under the Criminal Code can be submitted for Mischief by interfering with other person lawful enjoyment of their property which can carry large fines and/or jail time. Nelson Police are still investigating and the homeowners where the party took place will be spoken to. submitted by the Nelson Police Department
RCMP Reports: outdoor grow-op seized On Wednesday, Sept. 17, members of the Castlegar Crime Reduction Unit attended a remote location off of the Rialto Forest Service Road after receiving a tip about an outdoor Marjhuana growing operation. Members were able to locate the growing operation approximately one kilometer off of the road. The outdoor
growing site contained 77 Marjhuana plants which were ready for harvest. The plants were being watered by an automatic watering system which consisted of hosing running from a nearby creek. A timer was being used to cycle the watering as needed. Numerous containers of fertilizer and other Marjuana growing equipment
was also located. The street value of the Marjuana which was seized and destroyed by attending members was approximately $10,000. The growing site was located on Crown land and no suspects were encountered by members. submitted by the Castlegar RCMP

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion

Hashtag Activism
The use of Twitter in our society today has given people a new outlet to share ideas and thoughts across the Internet. Among the juvenile humour and Internet trends, many people use Twitter to spread awareness to various issues. But just how useful is social media when it comes to these issues? While I agree that bringing light to more of our global issues is important, I can’t help but feel that we could be doing a heck of a lot more then tweeting a hashtag or dumping a
bucket of ice water on top of ourselves. Actually donating or even informing others of how they can help is far more useful then simply doing what I stated prior. Personally, a more outgoing approach is how I would approach this new form of activism. You can tweet and share all you want, but actually getting out there and making the difference is what really matters. How you choose to contribute is up to you, but taking an approach that encourages action rather then mindlessly sharing articles is how I would do it.

Survey&Editorial Peace is a Process
Sunday, September 21 is International Peace Day. I’d like By Nelson Becker to look upon this day as a reminder, in case I’ve forgotten, that every day should be Peace Day. It is important to understand what peace is in order to have any hope of supporting International Peace Day. While the dictionary would tend to solidify the word peace as an object to be acquired, it is my thought that peace refers much more to a process than a product.
I also visualize peace in it’s very broadest terms. For example, to be at peace with one’s self is as important as peace between nations. Peace is much more than simply being without violence. We are all peacemakers. Whether we volunteer in a nonprofit organization, demonstrate against war, work toward environmental balance, or develop our spiritual core, humans have a responsibility to each other to make life easier and less stressful. Take this day and celebrate the
peace work that you do. The peacemakers are winning, although its hard to see that from the sensational news that we are fed. One death by violence is as bad as 1,000 deaths by violence. Death will always be horrific to us. But, rest assured that today the world is much less violent than it ever has been. If you doubt this, please see the Ted Talk given by Steven Pinker: https://www.ted.com/talks/ steven_pinker_on_the_myth_of_ violence?language=en
