Nelson’s blue night event served as a lovely series of warm little harbours from a cold rain. First stop, Cantina Del Centro for some urban-style Pop art by Buck D. Addams. Addams had appropriated images of popular culture with a predominant Star Wars theme. Most striking was the image of National Geographic’s “Afghan Girl”, her brown flesh replaced with an opaque neon green spray paint: A unique take on the repetition of imagery and advertising in our culture. Next, I ducked into Café Momento for a look at Erika Konrad’s curious rain smeared paintings. These startling mixed media pieces had a delightful milky texture accomplished by the incorporation of bee’s wax, and gave me a strong urge to caress the smooth

waxy surface with my fingertips. But of course I felt them with my eyes instead, and imagined myself sitting in front of a rainy day window wondering at the movement of strange twiggy lines and sporadic colour. Pulling myself away from imagined rain out into the sobering reality of it, I was off to Touchstones Gallery to see Amy Bohigan’s brilliant “Wide Shot/ Close Up” exhibit: A simple but decidedly insightful exercise in examining human nature. Bohigan displayed moving snapshots, if you will, of Nelson’s average Joe. Video portraits of folks addressing themselves in a fractured mirror, and dozens of iPod’s suspended from the ceiling, each with its own tiny Nelsonite dancing on individual screens to their own solitary tunes. I thought it a unique commentary on how technology isolates us, and a simultaneous reminder

that we are one and the same. One more shot up the road to Expressions Café for an artistic trifecta. An amalgamation of a live Disc Jockey (DJ Volpix) a visual artist (Sophia Mitchell), and an amazing Aerial Silk/ Hoop act by Calleis and Laura Yale made the atmosphere thick with creativity, consequently jam- packing the Café with curious onlookers. A dazzling treat were these bohemian acrobatics. Their very bodies becoming art before our eyes, painting the air with their flesh. Combining and reflecting energies, mingling body and soul in an entrancing and elaborate floating dance. Like Olympians, they demonstrate the impressive and graceful potential of the human form. What a kaleidoscopic glimpse of Nelson’s talented and unique population. A party for the senses.

Perry Ridge pancake breakfast Saturday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m. to noon at Passmore Hall The Perry Ridge Water Users Association and the Sinixt Nation will host a pancake breakfast at the Passmore Hall in the Slocan Valley. Room to Live has good start

Nelson CARES Society launched their Room to Live campaign on November 14, 2014 to a sold out audience at the Capitol Theatre. This three year campaign will bring renewal to a 100 year old low income apartment block in downtown Nelson. To date NCARES has already raised $190,000 toward their goal of $690,000. The next step in the campaign is to invite the community to join the Coldest Night of the Year on Saturday, February 21st. This na[onal event challenges communi[es to take a walk together on the coldest night of the year to help understand homelessness and the importance of affordable housing. http://roomtolive.ca/

Holiday Hampers program The Holiday season is approaching quickly, and the Nelson Food Cupboard is busy preparing their annual Holiday Hampers, to help approximately 500 people enjoy a healthier and cheerier Holiday with this annual program. The people served at the Food Cupboard and with the hamper program live in poverty year round; some are on permanent disability pensions due to physical or mental health challenges, some work for minimum wage, some are single parents with children, and some are senior citizens. A Book Under Every Tree

Donate books until Thursday, Dec. 11 Books can open whole worlds— as long as you have one. This holiday season a local partnership aims to put a book under every tree for the children of Holiday Hamper recipients. Holiday Hampers are distributed annually by the Nelson Food Cupboard to more than 500 people working hard to make ends meet, including 150 children. IHA gets sexy Interior Health launched a new campaign today to encourage all adults in the region to get tested for HIV. The “My Health Is Sexy” campaign uses intimate images to convey the message that knowing your HIV status is an important part of a healthy sex life and a good relationship. In B.C., it is estimated that approximately 3,500 are people living with HIV and are unaware of their status. The campaign is part of the province’s ground-breaking Seek and Treat for Optimal Prevention of HIV/AIDS (STOP HIV/AIDS) program. The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is asking the public to complete surveys concerning the future of four regional parks before December 10th. Avalanche Canada cautions back country users

Avalanche Canada issued a special public avalanche warning for the mountains of BC’s interior, last weekend. The Black Friday storm came in wet and finished cold. As a result, the structure consists of 15 - 25 cm of cold snow on top of a 2 - 6 cm supportive pencil/knife hard crust which was been observed as high as 2100.

This crust could act as a bed surface in the future, but for now it appears to be bridging any deeper weaknesses. All backcountry users must be equipped with essential avalanche safety equipment. Everyone in the party needs an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel every day. It’s equally important that everyone has

avalanche training and has practiced using thisequipment. If an avalanche occurs, the rescue is up to you. There is no time to go for help. Wearing an avalanche balloon pack can reduce the chances of burial. For up-to-date avalanche forecasts, check http://www.avalanche.ca/

RCMP: Creston RCMP seeking public help in cold cases

On July 29, 2004 at 1:30 pm, the Creston RCMP received a report of a missing person from a residence on the 1300 block of Channel Road. George Franklin DAVIS, who was 40-yearsold at the time, apparently went to get some cigarettes driving a brown 1981 Chrysler Lebaron bearing BC plate 191BHR. DAVIS never returned and has not been seen since. The vehicle has also never been located. DAVIS suffered from a medical condition similar to epilepsy and required medication that he did not

take with him that day. Without his prescription, DAVIS could experience seizures and blackouts. Description of George DAVIS: Caucasian male 40 years at time of disappearance (now 51) 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) 189 lb (86 kg) Brown hair Tattoo of a cougar on his left upper arm Investigators are seeking public assistance in locating DAVIS as well as bringing long-sought answers to his family. On July 27, 2014, the Creston RCMP received a report of theft from a residence in Wynndel, BC. Sometime during the previous year, a significant amount of jewelry was taken from the home with an estimated loss of over $50,000. The jewelry had been stored in their boxes but the suspect took the time to repack and replace all the boxes so as not to arouse suspicion. As a result, the theft went unnoticed for an unknown period of time. Police are looking for public assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for this theft. Anyone with any information on

Coping with Seasonal Illness I’ve been sick, and have been for the past couple weeks. It’s something that I have gotten used to as time has gone on. So what’s a guy (or girl) to do when they come down with a cold? There are a number of various remedies you can try with, varying levels of success. I take a myriad of things to help keep down my illness, from anti-cold tablets to vitamin C, but there are other methods you may not be aware of. One of the more time-

tested methods is gargling salt water three times a day, as this helps with throat pain as well as loosens mucus. A couple teaspoons of honey can also be of great benefit as well. There are also other methods that are more common, such as cough syrup or even having a shower. So, were these tips helpful to you? I would certainly hope so, as I’m still currently dealing with my illness. With these tips hopefully your illness doesn’t last very long.

I have seen too many good people who have contributed to this community and have great skills be forced to leave because they could not find enough work here to support themselves/their family. Sad for our community. I am 55 y.o. and have in several cities...Winnipeg, Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Cranbrook, and this is the first and only place I feel like it’s my home :) We visited, chose Nelson, then worked for 2 years to secure the jobs we needed to be able to move here. To me this is where I always wanted to be. Living in BC has taught me many things about life. After coming from the coast this is truly paradise. Wonderful climate, beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes, social activism, kind and gentle people

We found Nelson accidentally driving through the area. Had lunch. Moved here a year later.

Also love the people, landscape, and the caring qualities of the community. Have recently applied to a seniors home in Kitimat where my daughter lives and then realized that I couldn’t leave Nelson. She said “ That’s okay, Ma. When you’re old and senile I’ll just come and get you” (haha) I am home when I am at peace in myself

It is a true gift to find “home” Retired and living the dream. Culture, geography, climate. Only trouble with Nelson is the shortage of jobs. I think that a huge society wide project to build Renewable Energy infrastructure is what is needed. I only moved away from Nelson to be close to my kids & grand kids here on the Island. I will be returning permanently though, as my plot is bought and paid for.
