Hailing from the coastline of Victoria, BC, solo artists Abraham (Sydney Batters) and Kirsten Ludwig are joining forces to embark on their first tour across Western Canada. common themes with artists such as Laura Marling and Angel Olsen. With a mixture of mature lyrics, hauntingly crisp vocals, and catchy punchlines, Kirsten Ludwig defies the boundaries of pop, relating to artists such as A Fine Frenzy and Neko Case. RDCK rejects more bids The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Board has rejected all bids received for the Balfour and Kaslo Transfer Station Upgrades as all bid exceeded the available budget. Five bids were received for the construction tender which closed on April 8, 2015. Accepting the lowest tendered price would have put the RDCK substantially above the $ 1,250,000 approved project budget. The RDCK Board has directed staff to work with the project engineers to revise the scope of the project to find cost savings. The project will shortly be re-tendered to the five bidders with revised specifications. Consequently, the commencement of construction will be delayed by at least one month. However, it is anticipated the transfer station upgrades will still be completed in 2015. The planned temporary closure of the Kaslo Transfer Station on May 4, 2015 will not occur and the site will remain open to the public until a revised construction schedule is determined. Earlier this month, the RDCK Board rejected all bids for renovating the Nelson and District Aquatic Centre for similar reasons. rdck.bc.ca
Suspension Bridge Closure Three weeks beginning April 27 Canadian Pacific and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) will be removing metal-impacted soils within the RDCK’s lands near the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge and Observation Deck. The soils have been tested and are non-hazardous. During active construction, access to the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge, the nearby Brilliant Road, and the Observation Deck will be closed. Access to the historic Brilliant Suspension Bridge and a portion of the Brilliant Road will be reopened outside of regular construction hours. rdck.bc.ca

Award for Tarry volunteer
A volunteer firefighter from the Tarry’s fire department has received the 2015 Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Award for Road Rescue from the Province of BC. Dave Laramee has been a firefighter with the department since 2003 and its training officer since 2009. Laramee delivers training in firefighting, first response, wildland firefighting, and
extrication. “I’m thrilled to receive this honour, but there are more volunteers than just me,” says Laramee. Laramee was presented the award by Emergency Management BC at a ceremony in Victoria. Nelson Fire Rescue: ammonia spill at NDCC At 10:31 p.m. Monday, Apr. 20, the Nelson Fire Rescue Services responded to a report of a possible ammonia leak at the NDCC. Both on duty members responded immediately, with the Fire Chief and 3 additional members responding from home. Upon arrival of the first crew, a few members of the public were gathered at the front entrance, complaining of a strong smell of ammonia in the building. The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to ensure everyone was out of the building and accounted for. The whereabouts of one staff member was unknown, and a search of the arena was launched. He was subse-
quently found to have already been transported to hospital in a private vehicle, seeking treatment for burns caused by ammonia. Crews determined that the arena’s refrigerant system was not leaking at this time, but the fumes were from a large container of diluted ammonia, which had been placed outside. An unknown amount of the diluted ammonia had been spilled near the building’s air intake, causing the fumes to be transported into the building. Nelson Fire Rescue’s hazardous materials team donned Class B suits, with breathing air tanks, and retrieved
the ammonia solution. In consultation with the Ministry of the Environment and with the assistance of the staff of the NDCC, the material was neutralized and disposed of safely. Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the incident with two fire engines, the hazardous materials response trailer and two utility vehicles. Crews were on scene until 3am. One injury was reported as a result of this incident. Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to move outside, uphill and upwind, should they ever encounter an ammonia spill or leak. submitted by Nelson Fire Rescue

Opinion&Editorial My Opinion
by Spencer Pollard
Violence is a prominent aspect of our lives, thanks to the media and modern films, among other things. As time goes on however, I find we get far more desensitized. This is both good and bad. Due to the overly violent nature of certain films and video games, an
Our Tolerance of Violence
overabundance of violent becomes far more tolerable. With all the violence we see we become desensitized to it and thus it becomes something we can live with. Is this good however? I argue that it is. Violence is an undeniable aspect of our lives and becoming desensitized to it makes it seem far less harsh then it actually
is. When we become so desensitized that we can perform violent acts to living creatures, is where I draw the line. With our consumption of violent media it has made us far more at ease when it comes to violence. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it’s something we need to keep in mind.

My Disposable Income is shrinking due to inflation across the board, and the fact I have an increasing number of grand-kids to blow bucks on. The latter is money well spent and enjoyed though, and I’m thankful for that, but fearful of a dark future where inflation takes it all away.
