Welcome

March 2013 HAVE A GREAT EASTER

The old adage that ‘March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb’ is certainly ringing true at the moment as we continue to suffer the bitter winds and changing weather that seem to have lasted as long as Middlesbrough FC’s barren run that’s just about scuppered hopes of automatic promotion. Let’s hope that both improve as the month progresses. But to look on the bright side, this month not only gives us the opportunity to show our mothers they are still the most important people in our lives but also heralds the arrival of the Easter festival. Mother’s Day is one of the long lasting traditions that most of us look forward to as it really does give us the opportunity to show our mums how much we appreciate them. Easter, on the other hand, is the Church of England’s most important occasion of the year, featuring as it does the events that ultimately became the true foundations of the Christian religion. Unfortunately, the continuing decline of the church’s influence in modern day life means that most people think of it more as a time for chocolate and holidays than a time when we can reflect on the ‘Greatest story ever told.’

Congratulations Harry

T

eenage apprentice Harry Teasdale Jnr has done himself proud after making it through to the national final of a plumbing competition for the second year running. The 18-year-old, who works at HT Energy in Swainby, North Yorkshire, walked away with first place after impressing the judges at the regional heat of HIP! Magazine’s Apprentice of the Year 2013 competition, held at Redcar & Cleveland College. Harry, who studies at Redcar & Cleveland College as part of his Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship progamme, had to show off his plumbing skills during a day of complex tasks, which included installing a radiator and carrying out all of the necessary plumbing work. He competed against students from five other colleges in the north east heat, from Hull to Newcastle, but took top marks for his PAGE 4 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

precision, thoroughness and skill. Harry Jnr, from Stockton, said: “I was very chuffed to win the regional heat and now can’t wait for the national final in May. “The tasks they set us were not easy, but I really enjoyed it and just tried to approach it as though it was a normal day at work. Competitions are always a bit nerve-wracking, but it was definitely worth it. I’m loving my Apprenticeship and winning the northern heat proves that I’m obviously being taught well.” Redcar & Cleveland College’s unique Eco House training centre, which is fitted with the latest renewable training equipment, has enabled Harry Jnr to develop the skills necessary to work in the evolving plumbing, heating and renewable energy industry. His father, Harry Teasdale Snr, is STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Development Manager at Redcar & Cleveland College and was delighted to watch his son take first place. He said: “I’m really proud of Harry and what he has achieved since becoming an apprentice. Last year he won the regional heat and was runner-up in the national final, so fingers crossed he can do even better this year. “Apprenticeships are a great way of learning skills for life, gaining recognised qualifications and earning a wage, so I couldn’t be happier for Harry. I know that what he is achieving now will set him up for a great career.” For more information about Apprenticeship programmes and other courses at Redcar & Cleveland College, call 01642 473132 and ask for Student Services or visit www.cleveland.ac.uk

MOTORING sharper than the previous version but is still very much in the familiar Golf mode. The wheelbase has been stretched by some 50mm and the new chassis soaks up bumps and potholes with ease. It also includes remarkable new hardware – the VW Group’s ‘MBQ’ classic architecture – that makes parking so, so easy. Some models also include the superb DSG gearbox. Inside there’s more space for the driver and four passengers and two significant improvements are the new multifunctional steering wheel and the impressive ‘ergoactive’ seats. The wheel puts all controls within immediate reach and works well with the

large display screen. All in all, then, the new Golf is a refined, comfortable, compliant and high quality car, and for a model that has always been highly rated anyway, this new version really is exceptional.

Is Tech Advantageous?

Just How Advantageous Is Modern Technology?

I

t’s obvious that modern technology has added dramatically to our quality of life but some of its influences also seem to be having a detrimental effect on the way we enjoy the more normal aspects of our everyday existence. . . See how many of these observations are relevant to your particular lifestyle: YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2013 when... 1. You accidently enter your pin on the microwave. 2. You haven’t played Solitaire with real cards in years 3. You have a list of fifteen phone numbers to reach the three members of your family. 4. You e-mail the person on the desk next to yours. 5. You claim the reason you don’t stay in touch with family and friends is that they are not on Face-book.

6. You pull up in your own driveway and use your mobile phone to see if there’s anyone around who will help you carry the groceries into the house. 7. Leaving the house without your mobile phone, which you didn't even have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to retrieve it. 8. You get up in the morning and go on-line before getting your coffee. 9. Despite the fact that every bus stand displays a comprehensive timetable you still insist on going ‘on-line’ to find out how long you are going to have to wait for your particular bus! 10. When you visit a sick friend in hospital your biggest fear is that you are going to have to spend the next sixty minutes without your mobile phone. Our advice is to try doing without all those gadgets for a week or so. We can assure you the world will not collapse and you might actually enjoy talking to people again!

Does This Sound Familiar? "The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome become bankrupt.'' People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero , 55 BC So, evidently we've learned nothing in the past 2,067 years. PAGE 8 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

Cosmetic Surgery – Facts Before You Decide!

I

n the past ten years, the number of people having cosmetic surgery has increased considerably with most procedures carried out on women. Not to be confused with plastic surgery which usually repairs damaged skin and tissue following injury or illness, the top five most popular cosmetic procedures for women are breast enlargement, eyelid surgery, face and neck surgery, tummy tucks and breast reduction. For men, the most popular are nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, ear pinning, liposuction and male breast reduction. A number of non-surgical procedures like Botox injections, dermal fillers and chemical peels have also come to the fore in people’s attempts to change their appearances to achieve what they perceive to be a more desirable look. There are, however, other situations where surgery may be needed for functional reasons. Breast reduction, for instance, is often used to alleviate back or neck pain. During cosmetic surgery, a number of different bodily features may be changed, including skin colour and texture or the structure or shape of a body part such as the nose so deciding to have cosmetic surgery isn't a decision that should be taken lightly. In addition, cosmetic surgery can PAGE 10 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

be expensive and time consuming, results are often variable and since the end result can't be guaranteed it's important that you give careful thought and consideration when deciding to go ahead. It's a good idea to discuss your plans with your GP, and if you finally do decide to have surgery, be absolutely sure about your reasons for wanting to have it.

On extreme occasions cosmetic surgery can be made available on the NHS but there must be major physical or psychological reasons for considering cosmetic surgery or that cosmetic surgery is required to protect a person’s health. Because NHS resources are limited and waiting times are usually long, however, many people still tend to pay to

THE EYE MAGAZINE have cosmetic surgery undertaken privately. If you do decide to have it done, it's vital that you make sure the surgeon and other healthcare professionals undertaking the procedure are fully qualified and experienced in the type of work you are contemplating. You should discuss the procedure in detail with your surgeon, asking as many questions as you can so that you're fully aware of what the procedure involves, how it will be carried out, what he anticipates the results will be and whether there may be any after effects. And to reduce the chances of disappointment you should also make sure that your expectations of what surgery can achieve are realistic, make sure that the surgeon understands what you want and follow any advice he gives you about aftercare.

Properly undertaken, though, the end results can give a huge confidence boost to the patient and certain procedures have been known to be life-changing for the better. Why Remake A Classic?

T

here can’t be many TV programmes that have surpassed – or even equalled - the excellence of the ‘Yes Minister’ and ‘Yes, Prime Minister’ series. The original Yes, Minister and its sequel Yes, Prime Minister ran from 1980 to 1988 for 38 episodes, and starred Paul Eddington as Prime Minister Jim Hacker, Nigel Hawthorne as Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and Derek Fowlds as Hacker’s Personal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley. Wonderfully written, superbly acted and on many occasions introducing pioneering ideas and political hypotheses that would eventually emerge in the true world of twenty first century politics, the series was an untouchable classic. Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn’s marvellous scripts survive the test of time better than almost any other series from the time and I for one watch my complete set of DVDs on numerous occasions and always find them both funny and exceedingly watchable. So whose idea was it to remake the series? Despite retaining the obvious skills of Jay and Lynn the updated version – which stars David PAGE 16 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

Haig as Jim Hacker and Henry Goodman as Sir Humphrey Appleby – loses enormously in the translation. As one notable critic put it; ‘Sadly, it doesn’t come even close. It is stagey and unsubtle, with nothing new or relevant to say about modern politics and with weaker oneliners. Far less artfully constructed and written than the 1980s series.’ David Haig has actually been in a couple of things I have liked. His cameo in ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ was excellent and his performance as Inspector Grimm in the Jasper Carrott series ‘The Detectives’ was one of the highlights of that show. But Jim Hacker he certainly isn’t and while Nigel Hawthorne was silky smooth in his portrayal of the manipulative cabinet secretary Henry Goodman has little to offer as far as humour is concerned. If it survives for a second series, I, for one, will be amazed. It’s probably been the worst idea since Adolf Hitler’s mum and dad decided to have an early night!

Meet Me By The Clock

Local Icon Is One Hundred Years Old

T

here can’t be many people in Redcar who haven’t said at one time or another ‘I’ll meet you by the clock,’ demonstrating in the most human terms that the Redcar town clock tower is by far the town centre’s most familiar and iconic building. This wonderful landmark celebrated the hundredth year of its interesting history in January, having been originally conceived as a Coronation Clock dedicated to King Edward VII who was a regular visitor to the area. At that time Coatham and Redcar had recently combined as one authority and it was a joint venture between the two communities. An appeal for funds attracted some £300, some of it from the sale of ‘penny bricks,’ but the total proved insufficient and the idea had to be put aside. In 1911, however, after the sad death of King Edward VII, the fund was reopened and attracted enough money to build the clock, but now in memory of the late king. Fittingly, it was built on the previous boundary between Redcar and Coatham and the idea was to have the four clock faces pointing North, South, East and West. After receiving seventeen different tenders, all with different clock designs, it was decided to go PAGE 18 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

with that of architect William Duncan and was constructed using red engineering bricks and reinforced concrete by builder John Dobson. The clock's mechanism was created by Robert Richardson, the wrought iron weather vane was made by local man Gordon Scott, and the bell itself was donated by Mrs Walton. The opening ceremony – performed by Councillor Henry Hudson - took place on Wednesday 29th January 1913 and featured a fanfare from the Boy Scouts, a selection of music by the Warrenby Band and a symbolic silver knife that was used during the ceremony.

The clock was not without its problems, however, and Residents of the nearby hotel objected to it striking the hour during the

THE EYE MAGAZINE night, so it had to be disconnected. Eventually, during the 1970s, the bell was removed, recast and hung in St. Mark's Church in Marske. A watchmaker of the time was also adamant that the time shown on the four clock faces never correlated, but after the Second World War the pendulum and weights mechanism was replaced by an electric motor to operate the clock and in 1984 the clock faces were all renewed. Today, it is a Grade II listed building and a valued part of our local heritage that numerous people think of fondly for many different reasons. How many lifelong relationships began by meeting under that clock can only be guessed at, but despite it’s constant buffeting from the adverse conditions created by its proximity to the North Sea the clock stands proudly as a wonderful symbol of Redcar’s history.

March Gardening Tips GARDEN MAINTENANCE

Frosts can still be a hazard during March, so keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is forecast. March winds are also notorious for their ferocity so check exposed plants are well supported.

Now is the time for a thorough spring clean; weed and dig over your borders incorporating as much organic matter as you can - those chilly winds will really help to dry out the soil. Mulch bare soil once you have done the work and remove moss and weeds from paths, terraces and driveways. They may be boring tasks but if you don’t get on top of the PAGE 22 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

garden now (especially the weeds!) it will be a nightmare for the rest of the season. Mark out the shape of new beds and boarders with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

PLANTS AND BULBS

Protect new spring shoots from slugs (a generous application of slug killer around hostas (even if they are not showing) now will

GARDENING help in the uneven battle on the horizon!). Plant summer flowering bulbs. Add some compost to the soil, a sprinkling of bonemeal and plant them slightly deeper than they were in the pot. Cut down perennials that have been left standing over winter, including grasses even if they are still looking good. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials and split polyanthus plants once they have finished flowering.

Redcar in Bloom – can you help?

Hazel or birch twigs are great for the natural look, canes and pea netting are practical and unobtrusive and purpose made green plastic covered supports are easy and convenient. Looking ahead to summer - buy young plants now for your hanging baskets and containers and pot them up so the moment the last frost is over.

2013 will be the third year of Redcar being an entrant in the Northumbria in Bloom Coastal Town category and we are working towards bringing home another silver if not a silver gilt during this time.

Sow hardy annuals such as calendula, cornflowers and annual poppies in drifts – clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones.

We are currently preparing our planting regime for the tubs and planters in the High Street areas of Redcar plus embarking on two projects. The first being improvements to The Remembrance Garden and also the sprucing up of Zetland roundabout. If you feel able to give a couple of hours each month we would like to hear from you. Register on www.RedcarinBloom.co.uk & find us on Facebook too.

LAWNS

Keep off your lawn as much as possible while wet. Use a garden fork air ate and add drainage to the lawn by poking holes ever 2 feet or so about 2-3 inchs deep. Reseed bare patches. Dont be tempted to cut the lawn while it still wet.

Good luck, Mr Gorsky

The Finest Story Of The First Man On The Moon

T

here’s a piece of trivia that’s been around for years and apparently has kept most of the world in suspense as to its original importance. On July 20th 1969 – as commander of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module - Neil Armstrong was the first human being to set foot on the moon.

integrity would finally let him tell the real story of Mr Gorsky.

His first words on stepping onto the moon’s surface were ’That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’ Just before he re-entered the craft, however, he also uttered the statement ‘Good luck, Mr Gorsky.’ Many of the people at NASA thought it was a throw–away remark aimed at one of his rival Russian cosmonauts, but their checks on the subject proved that there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or the American space programmes. Over the years it became an often asked question of Armstrong. ‘Who was Gorsky and why did he need good luck?’ But Neil Armstrong always just smiled and refused to answer. On July 5th 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, a reporter brought up the 26 year old subject again after listening to a Neil Armstrong speech. This time Armstrong replied that because Mr Gorsky had recently died his own PAGE 24 | THE EYE MAGAZINE - ISSUE 45

In 1938, he said, when he was just a small kid in a mid-western American town, he was playing baseball with a friend in his backyard. His friend hit the ball which landed in his neighbour’s yard just by their bedroom window. His neighbours were Mr and Mrs Gorsky, and as Neil went to retrieve the ball he leaned down to pick it up and heard Mrs Gorsky shouting at Mr Gorsky ‘Sex, you want sex? You’ll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!’ Improbable as it may sound, Neil Armstrong’s family has confirmed that this is a true story. We don’t care if it is or it isn’t. It’s completely wonderful!

nyone who reads this column on a regular basis will know that I always try to find a little chink of light regardless of how long the dark tunnel may be but I’m afraid that even I have had to succumb to common sense and admit that performances over the last seven weeks have left us with a mountain to climb. And not just any mountain. The idea of automatic promotion has now reached Everest-like proportions so the best we can hope for is that we can do enough to force the chasing pack to leave us in a play-off place. If evidence since Christmas is anything to go by, ‘Boro – for the first part of the season at least – must have been fighting well above their weight. The truth is that vital goals at vital times gave us points that we were grateful for because the defence was mean enough to make those odd goals count. Now we are letting in goals at a rate of knots the blank sheet against Burnley came as a huge relief. That we could actually have won that game at the end – despite not having a shot on goal for the first hour or so – is a reminder of some of the early wins that we managed to get away with. At the time of writing we have yet to play Millwall in the late Saturday kick off, but since in their previous game they conceded five against lowly Peterborough

there shouldn’t be an excuse for anything other than a comprehensive victory. Failure to achieve that will go a long way to denying us even the play-offs. Perhaps I’m being a little harsh in view of the number of injuries we have had to endure, but I still maintain that playing Rhys Williams at right back when Parnaby was on the bench was a waste of one of our better players. That Stephen McManus returned against Burnley to do a great job despite being pushed out and ignored for much of the season showed a great attitude and it really is that kind of determination we now need from everybody. Nobody minds losing a game against better opposition (well, we do really, but at least we can understand it.) What we really don’t want to see is a defeat against obviously inferior teams. With confidence as low as it now is, however, that could continue to happen so we would all love the team to make a big effort and have the courage to really go for it. From now to the end of the season both of those attributes will be needed in abundance.

The Best Man’s Speech...don’t make it a disaster

Novelty Wedding Cakes

Cupcake Wedding Cakes

otentially the funniest, but also potentially the most dangerous part of the wedding reception is the best man’s speech. It can be a nerve wracking experience for someone not accustomed to speaking in public, but the good news is that properly written and well executed your best man’s speech could make you a real star in the eyes of not only the guests but more importantly the bridesmaids! So here are a few basic rules that will make it work. 1. First no best man’s speech is ever great if it makes the Groom’s friends cheer and the Bride’s parents cry. 2. Write it well in advance and memorise it. There’s nothing worse than reading from a piece of paper. Eye contact with your audience is paramount! 3. It’s fine to humiliate the groom. Everyone will love you for it. But never, ever mention any of his previous relationships.

They are no longer appropriate and could never, under any circumstances, be funny at his wedding. 4. It does need to be funny, however, but certainly not offensive. Try and prejudge the type of audience you’re going to have and avoid anything that will upset anyone. 5. When choosing the stories you are going to tell, what traits in their offspring will The Parents recognise and enjoy? And most important, what will make The Parents proud of their new son-in-law and their new daughter-in-law? 6. No, this is not about being a sycophant. Far from it. It’s about doing what’s in any speaker’s best interest – recognising the number one rule of public speaking — know your audience. Win the parents and you’ll win the crowd. We hope it all goes well!
