Gosford Over Come Slow Start To Blitz Raiders ---- The Eye ----

The Storm began slowly against Blue Haven in the U13(2)s qualifying semi final before finding their feet; running in six tries to triumph 32-14 in convincing style. Gosford conceded two early tries to trail by ten after as many minutes in the balmy conditions and the early signs were not great. A welcome attacking foray mid way through the half however saw the boys strike back when a perfectly weighted Jayden Wilde Taylor cross field kick found his unmarked winger Jordan Eilersen and the Storm had their first try. In the very next set, Gosford again worked play up field before crisply spreading the ball on the last. Nick Rodrigues took advantage of a three on two on the left edge, feeding Taylor Eilersen who in turn found his twin brother Jordan. The diminutive winger shot down the sideline before drawing the last defender, passing back inside to Taylor Eilersen for a spectacular Storm try. Jayden Wilde Taylor’s successful conversion served to fully wipe off the early deficit and the scoreboard became even brighter when Sione Vaenuku powered over for the Storm’s third try soon after. It was scored yet again on the left edge and had followed a powerful effort from Tarren Wargent who was held up over the line on the previous play. Gosford headed into the mid game huddle leading 14-10.

SEMI FINALS – WEEK ONE U13(2)s

Not long after the restart, Blue Haven prop Reece Lindsay raced away for his second try of the game and the scores were again level. Gosford quickly wrested back the advantage however when replacement centre Sebastian Burke crossed for a popular try; careering 40 metres down the eastern touchline having swatted away two or three Raiders early on in his journey. It was a play that was keenly celebrated for it both; recaptured Gosford’s lead whilst also announcing the return of the long striding Sebastian who had missed the previous three months of footy after badly injuring his knee in the trials. Jayden Wilde Taylor’s booming sideline conversion pushed Gosford out to 20-14 and the boys were never headed from that point forward. Two further tries, both to half/lock Nick Rodrigues, iced the game. The first of these came via a one on one strip, while the second was a trademark Nick Rodrigues show and go as he burst up centre field; a purposeful surge that left a couple of green & blue defenders clutching despairingly at the Noraville breeze.

Elimination Semi Final

Gosford See Off The Roos ---- The Eye ----

A tremendous tussle ensued between Gosford and Wyong in the U11(2)s knockout semi final; a thriller that had the crowd on the edges of their seats right up until the final whistle. whistle Gosford ultimately prevailed 20-18 in a game in which they never fell behind and yet could never quite convince the Roos to go away. Early Storm tries to Jeremy Hendriksen and Tyson Pagacs, along with a Luke Jacobs conversion gave Gosford the perfect start and a 10-0 lead. Jeremy's four pointer was a spectacular 75 metre dash up the eastern touchline whereas Tyson unfurled an unorthodox backward pirouette into the right corner. Spinning through a host of Roos, Tyson landed with a somewhat surprised expression on his face as he realized he was on the, ‘you beaut’ side of the stripe. A repeat set then saw the previously excellent Storm defence punctured for the first time in the game and the boys went to the break leading 10-6.

SEMI FINALS – WEEK ONE U11(2)s

Gosford extended their advantage early in the new half when an angled, last tackle grubber kick from Ryan Bird ricocheted off a hopping Roo and was scooped up, most appreciatively by centre Tevita Vaenuku who dived over for the try (see above) . Ahead 14-6, the Storm boys were forced to defend for long periods down on their own line as Wyong threw wave after wave of attack and the odd kitchen sink our way in a desperate attempt to bridge the gap. The line was finally fractured after a number of repeat sets and the purple section of the crowd readied themselves for a nerve racking conclusion. Gosford up 14-12 and the tension was eased somewhat when dummy half Tyson Pagacs shot down the blindside to score in the corner: Ryan Bird converted (see above) and one might have figured we were home. Wyong had other idea however and just minutes later, an untamed Roo tore through the middle of the Storm ruck to dash away for a determined try. Just two points stood between the two sides and the final moments required tenacious tackling and a steady nerve to get through ‌ And that we did!

Tigers Prove Too Strong ---- The Eye ----

Gosford went down to a physical Entrance team 20-4 in drizzly and ultimately, miserable conditions. Trailing 10-0 at the break, the Storm struggled to match the intensity displayed by the Tigers and found themselves twenty behind mid way through the final period. A powerful, ‘get out of my way’ try, scored by Jake Martin in the games latter stages finally gave the purple members of the crowd something to cheer about.

SEMI FINALS – WEEK ONE U12(3)s

In The Press … Gosford Kariong Begin Semi Finals Brightly by Andrew Stark. Coast Community News – 26th August, 2015 The opening weekend of this season’s junior rugby league semi final series saw the Gosford Kariong club win two of three games played at the Darren Kennedy Oval, Toukley. The Storm’s U13(2)s and U11(2)s scored impressive victories, while the U12(3)s fell to the Tigers. Gosford started tentatively in their U13(2)s qualifying semi final against Blue Haven, finding themselves ten behind after as many minutes. Three rapid fire tries down the left edge however enabled the Storm to nudge ahead 14-10 at the break. The pick of these first half attacking forays saw the Eilersen twins; Taylor and Jordan combine in a crisp interchange of passes down the western touchline. The Raiders struck first after the interval to lock the scores back up, before Gosford assumed total control, racing away to win 32-14. Two tries to busy half/lock Nick Rodrigues sealed the victory after the long striding Sebastian Burke had pushed the Storm ahead with a determined 40 metre charge to the line. Sebastian’s try was particularly well received as he has only just returned to the side having missed the previous three months with a knee injury. Gosford will now play unbeaten minor premiers Ourimbah in this weekend’s major semi final (Aug 29/30). Patches of sparkling attack underpinned by gritty on line defence enabled the Storm’s U11(2)s to ward off the Wyong challenge, winning 20-18 in a high quality elimination semi final. Gosford led 10-6 at half time, courtesy of a long distance effort from Jeremy Hendriksen and an unorthodox, reverse pirouette try to Tyson Pagacs in the right corner. While the Storm were never headed throughout the contest, Wyong continued to threaten and it was only desperate defence, combined with further tries to centre, Tevita Vaenuku and a second to dummy half Tyson Pagacs, that won them the day. In a tremendous all team effort, the front line tackling of; Dylan Gale, Ryan Bird and Callum Skuse was particularly worthy of note. Gosford’s lone, downcast chapter of the weekend arrived when The Entrance proved too strong in the U12(3)s qualifying semi final, running out 20-4 winners in drizzly conditions. The physical Tigers outfit hustled and bustled Gosford off their customary free flowing game and fully deserved the comprehensive victory. Gosford forward Jake Martin scored a powerful second half try and was his team’s most damaging runner throughout the contest, while prop Josh Stedman and fullback Michael Porter were also prominent. The Storm boys will now need to regroup in preparation for this weekend’s knock out semi final (Aug 29/30) against the Budgewoi Buff Point Bulldogs. . Please note: this is the submitted piece in it’s entirety. The editor of the Coast Community News is responsible for the changes that ultimately appear in the newspaper.

Ourimbah Win Again: But Gosford Close Gap ----The ----The Eye ----

A spirited showing by the Storm in the second half of the U13(2)s major semi final has uncovered a belief that the unbeaten Magpies, are in fact fallible. Ourimbah won the grand final qualifier 38-18 largely on the back of a dominant first half however Gosford rallied magnificently after the break to expose just one or two weakness’ in the black & white’s game. Gosford trailed 32-6 moment’s into the second half after talented Ourimbah fullback Brock Elford had run amok during the opening period. Yet despite the ugly, mid game scoreboard, the Storm totally dominated the contest from that point on as they hustled and bustled the minor premiers into error.

The Magpies conceded a string of penalties as their frustration at Gosford’s bold showing took hold. Huge performances from back rowers Nick Rodrigues and Taylor Eilersen led the way, as whole hearted effort was sprinkled liberally across the line up. A barnstorming 25 metre gallop into the right corner by tall prop Tarren Wargent and two determined, close range efforts from Nick Rodrigues produced Storm four pointers, while Jayden Wilde Taylor had a perfect day with the boot; converting all three tries.

Ou Gos rimbah ford 3 Kari 8 bt ong 18

Left centre Connor Anderson went close to scoring another Storm try late in the game when he was tackled into touch just centimetres from the corner post. A cruel, last minute intercept try to Ourimbah half Luke Moffitt, when Gosford were again pressing strongly, barely managed to paper over the frailty of the Magpies second half performance. A period which had seen the visitors outscore the favourites; exerting far more dominance than the 12-10 advantage would suggest.

Storm’s Giant Killing Run Continues ----The ----The Eye ----

Gosford extended their late season winning streak to six when they shut out an irritable Kincumber 18-0 in the minor semi final at Sohier Park. In a game that was played in the typical, knock em down drag em out style of sudden death footy, the Storm gained a perfect start when dummy half Luke Jacobs (pictured above) took off like a jack rabbit from the back of the ruck to arc his way determinedly into the canteen corner. The same player converted and Gosford led 6-0 after only a couple of minutes. After this initial strike the game quickly settled into an arm wrestle as both sides strived for field position and the luxury of an attacking set. Kincumber went close midway through the half when a Colt spilt the ball over our line as he attempted to reach out to score however the respective defence’s of either side were very much in the ascendancy and the Storm took a valuable 6-0 lead into the break. The second half began with Tyson Pagacs going close from dummy half before the lightning feet of fullback Jeremy Hendriksen led the Kincumber outside backs a merry dance. Jeremy fielded a Colts clearing kick and exploded into action, racing 50 metres down the western touchline, to extend Gosford’s lead to ten..

Dylan Gale’s adroit right boot added the extras and Gosford had kicked away to lead by a dozen. It was at about this point that sadly, the contest degenerated into a nasty, niggly farce. The Colts frustration and despondency at the state of the scoreboard overran any adherence they might have paid to the spirit of the game and penalties flowed ridiculously like H2O from a ruptured main. The young referee had his hands full and the game as a spectacle got uglier and uglier as every hit up earned a free kick and resulted in a caution. Happily I can report that the Gosford boys remained largely blameless as the shenanigans rained down all about them and a post match conversation with the young referee helped The Eye to fully confirm this view. Back to the footy: Callum Skuse inflicted further pain on the team in red when he steamrolled their middle from ten metres out to score a well deserved try. Birthday boy, Ryan Bird slotted the extras and the Storm had prevailed 18-0 in a tough and torrid minor semi final. The victory was made even sweeter for the fact that it was Kincumber who had ended Gosford’s run last season in the water logged preliminary final. The competition is now down to the last three as Greg Eather’s team ready themselves for a battle with Northern Lakes in this Saturday’s final at Morry Breen.

Gosford Back On Track With Big Win Over Budgewoi ----The ----The Eye ----

The Gosford U12(3)s regained their mojo after the previous week’s flat performance, scoring seven tries in a breezy 34-18 victory over Budgewoi in the minor semi final. The Storm began this knockout semi final with plenty of intent and had three tries in the bag before Budgie were given the chance to settle. Dylan McKay kicked the scoreboard into action when he scurried out of dummy half to cross for the games opening try after Jake Martin had skittled a host of Bulldogs with a powerful blindside surge. Follow up tries to Michael Porter and Nash Dorratt-Mavin saw the Storm charge to a 16-0 lead as the Budgie boys struggled to hold Gosford’s slick, early endeavour. A try in the corner lifted the northerners spirits briefly, before Jake Martin recouped the six points via a converted touchdown of his own; charging one pass off the ruck to burrow across beside the left hand upright. Gosford ahead 22-6 at half time: the sun was out, the bellbirds were chiming and all was well with the world.

SEMI FINALS – WEEK TWO U12(3)s 34 bt Kariong d r o sf o G i 18 Budgewo

Budgewoi scored first after the break having earned a repeat set, however their joy was to be short lived. Storm fullback Michael Porter fed Nash Dorratt-Mavin close to the line and the diminutive flyer dived over for his second four pointer of the afternoon ‌ and a 26-10 advantage. Defence took a back seat throughout much of the second half as the game got stuck in a curious groove of tit for tat scoring, with both sides struggling to keep their line in tact for anymore than three or four tackles at a time. Budgewoi crossed in the

north western corner and from the restart, Blake Carney found himself darting over toward the Sohier Park skateboard ramp. Giant Bulldogs prop Dylan Graham returned serve in the following set, scoring his sixth try of the day having earlier notched five during the U11(3)s semi final against Umina. Gosford’s lead had been cut to twelve before Storm prop Josh Stedman took his turn in blazing a twenty metre trail to the line; an action that rounded out the scoring at 34-18 and helped book the Gosford boys a rematch with the Tigers in next week’s preliminary final. So How Do We Get A Photo For Uncle Phil & Aunty Sue ? Whilst my motivation for putting The Eye together each month is in no way financial, It would be good to recoup my bus & train fares; public transport levies accrued chugging to and from the myriad of footy ovals scattered across the CCDJRL region. So to keep Red Bus, Busways and even State Rail happy, all the photo’s appearing on the pages of this fine, up standing publication are available for purchase in all their high resolution JPEG magnificence for just $10 (via Paypal, cheque, money order, Dan Murphy’s gift card, krugerand, or just good old CA$H). Simply email me (Andrew) at 10dollarjpegs@gmx.com and let me know which image you’re after … or come up and tell me in person.

Jolly well played Gosford

… come and slip me $10 on game day … I’ll be the bleary eyed, disheveled looking bloke with the dodgy haircut … oh yeah, and the big camera !

Tens Go Agonizingly Close

The fulltime siren thwarts Gosford’s final attacking raid

It was a tremendous game of footy, but alas, the mighty Gosford U10(1)s season came to an end when they were edged out 16-12 by the second placed Kincumber Colts in a thrilling final round game at St Edwards No1 Oval. Our boys had needed a victory to ward off the Tigers, who sat one competition point adrift on the ladder and had the far easier round 15 match up against the 9th placed Woy Woy. Two tries inside the opening quarter hour, both scored by Jackson the electric eel Pennell had given the Storm a perfect start however the classy Colts outfit steadied, before gradually working their way back into the contest. With the score line at 12-6 just a minute before the break, Kincumber’s dummy half shot through from the back of the ruck for a crucial try that leveled it all up by half time. The Colts suddenly had all the momentum and scored again early in the second period to grab the lead. Gosford were forced to tackle their hearts out; hanging tough throughout much of the half in the hope of obtaining one last opportunity to attack. That moment arrived with time all but up when Jackson Pennell went on an amazing run from deep inside his own territory. Darting toward one sideline, he spun away from defender after defender and yet found no way of straightening.

Tens Go Agonizingly Close

Turning on a blade of grass, Jackson shot back from whence he’d come and the opening finally appeared. With a deadly right foot step he was suddenly setting sail up the western touchline, swatting away red jerseys, spinning wildly in tackles as every Gosford fan screamed him on. One of the covering Colts eventually managed to hang on, pulling Jackson down just ten metres from the try line. And as the ball was being urgently played, the dreaded siren wailed it’s sad song … and suddenly ---- The Eye ---there was no more for season 2015. Above: Jackson Pennell during his amazing late dash. Right: Jack Sinnott, who’s hard hitting defence had helped keep the Storm in the game, slumps onto his haunches after the referee’s final whistle

Gosford Fifteens End Year in Style Funniest Game of the Season Bamboozles Roos

In preparation for their final game of 2015, the Storm’s U15(1)s formed a pre game team huddle at the very end of the St Eddies wharf (as you do).

---- The Eye ----

Giving the distinct impression they’d just arrived via the Good Ship Lunatic, the Gosford boys trotted up the wharf and onto the oval singing the club’s anthem, Thunderstruck. Giggling madly they Nah nah nah nah narred their way toward the middle of the field as the high ranking Wyong Roos stood lined up on halfway looking stony faced and just a little non plussed at what was coming their way. An early blindside try in the favored wharf corner to centre Lachlan Keene-O’Keefe, was followed by a bizarre Brayden Habkouk sideline conversion which had both touchies raise their flags but was curiously denied, allegedly due to an errant tree branch (or something). Leading 4-0 only served to heighten Gosford’s desire to crack witty one liners & chuckle at every given opportunity.

The Storm were clearly out to have some fun and twice inside the opening twenty minutes they set up for field goal attempts; both of which sadly missed (truth be known, the second didn’t actually get airborne). The jovial approach was clearly messing with the Wyong head space and as the ball was flung back behind the ruck for the second drop goal attempt, a perplexed Roo defender could be overheard grumbling, oh, not again! A 5-0 lead after fifteen minutes may well have broken all Wyong resolve (or not), but alas it wasn’t to be. Six four at halftime and the Roos huddle was a surly collective of confusion as the green & gold outfit searched urgently for an answer to Gosford’s slapstick approach.

Coach, the harder we hit these guys, the more they laugh! The biggest belly laugh of the day came via a mishit Graham Porter clearing kick which skewed off the outer edge of his boot and lobbed barely 15 metres, struggling to even make halfway. As the ball dribbled feebly toward the sideline, Graham followed up with a forceful cry of 40/20 which had the Gosford bench hooting with laughter and even one or two of the Morry Breenites were witnessed letting slip a chuckle or two. Gosford Fifteens End Year in Style

That’s Gold ‌ the boys strike a pose as they await a second half Roos conversion attempt.

The fulltime scoreboard may have indicated a 2525-4 win for Wyong, however the Roos had clearly had no where near as much fun as our blokes had.
