Vol 31: September, 2018

Huge congratulations go out to our premiership winning U10(3)s. Richard Simmons and his sprightly band of primary schoolers outlasted the previously undefeated Budgewoi Bulldogs in what has to rate as the biggest rugby league upset since Western Division shocked Penrith in the AMCO Cup Final of 1974.

Welcome to the first ever “People’s Edition” of The Eye of the Storm magazine. Our regrettable finals ban (pre grand final day) has provided a wonderful upside, as the budding snappers from within our GK community have stepped up magnificently to fill the void. A big thank you to all the contributors for their amazing efforts. Issue 31 has scrubbed up quite nicely and I’d like to send a special shout out to Danielle Beckman whose hyperactive shutter finger did guarantee a plethora of action images, capturing both the 15s & 16s during their gutsy finals campaigns. Many thanks go out to our entire army of contributors; Amanda Langdon, Shannon Farr, Kellie Hodge, Danielle Beckman, Rachel Stedman, Clintos Phelan, Bec Cantell, Cath Doidge, Deb Eden, Eloise Beckman, Narelle Compton Walters, Vanessa Bird & Chloe Luck.

Tis sad, but true; the 2018 season is now officially done and dusted. Mouth guards have been jammed back into underwear draws, boots have been flung wildly over power lines and next years preseason presents like a midget halfback curled into the foetal position on some bleak and distant horizon. Hang in there footy fans; it’ll be kicking off again before you can shout, Carn Gossy!

Opinions expressed in this publication are derived solely from the scattered & random thoughts of the author; none of which are necessarily shared by the GKS club … nor anyone else on the planet really.

In The Press … Storm Win Grand Final Thriller

The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE September 2018

by Andrew Stark Coast Community News 13th September, 2018

The Gosford Kariong Storm have won their first premiership since 2014 after the club’s Under 10(3)s won an extra time thriller against the Budgewoi-Buff Point Bulldogs. Budgewoi headed into the junior rugby league decider as warm favourites having remained undefeated throughout the year. The Richard Simmons coached Gosford Kariong however were quietly confident of producing an upset having eliminated both; Warnervale and Erina during the semi final series. The scene was set for a cracking conclusion, and that’s exactly what transpired. Below an overcast Kanwal sky, the Bulldogs and the Storm traded tries before the wail of the full time siren rang out with both sides boasting 24 points. Player of the match, Fetineni Aho proved to be the difference between the sides; his incisive bursts earned him a hat-trick of tries, while his determined defence saved many more again. It was fitting that it would be ‘Neni’, who in the second minute of extra time, would scoot outside a desperately scrambling Budgewoi defence before arcing his way into the Lake Haven corner to score the premiership winning try. The shock Gosford win was made even more creditable given the overly youthful make up of their squad. Half the Storm team remain eligible to play in the under 10s age division again in 2019, and the future looks particularly bright for the Narara based club as they happily reacquaint themselves with the silverware after a four year drought. In other grand final results, pertinent to the Coast Community News’ catchment area; the Gosford Kariong under 11(3)s were narrowly defeated 20-16 by minor premiers The Entrance. While teams representing Terrigal-Wamberal, Erina, St Edwards & Kincumber did also feature across the grand final weekend however disappointingly, permission to cover these games was blocked by the Central Coast Division of Junior Rugby League.

The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE September 2018

- - - Access Denied - - It was very disappointing to lose media accreditation on the eve of this season’s junior semi final series. The Eye fully admits to being a tad argumentative in his response to the CCDJRL’S set of rules and regulations, however this was born out of sheer frustration. No self respecting photographer of over thirty years standing would ever be reduced to handing over all their images, free of charge, to an organization for use as they see fit; simply as a prerequisite to being allowed access in the first place. Especially when one is working in a purely voluntary capacity. As I explained to Division, I have covered and promoted local rugby league via this magazine, and in Central Coast Newspapers, for six seasons now … and the only time I ever hear from the CCDJRL is when they want to place an obstacle in my path. Under the previous administration, the President Terry Rule did simply ask that I might sling him a few images for their website; a request I was always happy to accommodate. But a blanket rule demanding all my images … nah, that’s just never going to happen! With regard the other CCDJRL rules & regulations … I agreed to all of them! As reported in an earlier edition of this publication; the number of teenage boys playing rugby league on the Central Coast has dropped by a staggering 30% in just over a decade. Given this horrific stat, one might imagine that if some plonker was happy to traipse around on public transport, from Northern Lakes in the north to Umina Beach in the south, covering and promoting the game, year after year after year, all off their own bat … that, rather than running interference, the hierarchy might actually warm to that individuals efforts. The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE September 2018

Our free of charge coverage of last season’s junior grand finals which appeared in the; Wyong Chronicle, Coast Community News & The Peninsula News. Quite amazingly, this years coverage was blocked by the CCDJRL.

- - - Access Denied - - The weeks that followed our initial loss of media access played out like this … Five days after losing accreditation, a follow up request was made to the CCDJRL with regard gaining entry to be allowed to write copy (with no photos) for an upcoming edition of the Coast Community News. The Eye figured that given photography was the sticking point, there’d be no issue re’ heading up to Toukley to watch the minor & major semi finals and writing a piece for the local paper. At least that way the junior rugby league finals would be afforded some form of coverage. I was flabbergasted when on the Saturday morning, permission was again denied. Spiraling into a feverish delirium of semi final withdrawal, a desperate and ultimate plea was made; a final call to be allowed to attend the grand finals.

“Hi Ben, I’m just writing to check that I’m OK to photograph from behind the rope, with all the other punters, at the junior grand finals on the weekend. It’d be nice to catch the two Gosford games as being a small club, we don’t make that many deciders (we haven’t won one since 2014). Thought I’d double check with you first, as I don’t particularly want to rock up to Kanwal at sparrows on Saturday, only to get tag teamed by red coats the moment I flip the lens cap off. If I don’t hear back from you, I’ll assume that I’m sweet to proceed.” I’ll admit that this last gasp request was made without a hell of a lot of optimism. On this occasion however the CCDJRL position softened and permission to cover the Storm games was granted. Newspaper coverage, it would seem, remained blocked.

“Hi Andrew, That’ll be fine to photograph the Gosford Kariong Storm teams & their games for your club.” Email response from CCDJRL (5-9-18)

WOOHOO … After 3 weeks in the doldrums, The Eye got to frock up and go to the big dance! The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE September 2018

Gosford – Terrigal 16s Score Upset of the Season

DID SADLY END UP ON

by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 27th August, 2018 (not published)

In the best rags to riches story of the junior rugby league season, the merged GosfordTerrigal U16s have progressed to next weekends preliminary final after upsetting The Entrance 10-6 in the minor semi final played at Toukley. At the beginning of the season both Gosford and Terrigal struggled for player numbers and a hybrid squad was decided upon to provide the lads from both clubs with a game of footy each weekend. The Gosford-Terrigal-Kariong-Wamberal Stormy Sharks were formed, and despite a couple of good wins over Toukley during the year, they finished at the foot of the competition ladder. The good news however was that despite having claimed the dreaded wooden-spoon, there were only five teams in the competition, and that meant that Gosford Terrigal had also qualified to play semi final football. Most onlookers surmised that this mongrel outfit would simply become cannon fodder for their more highly credentialed semi finalists and yet the Stormy Sharks have managed to record spirited victories over both Toukley and The Entrance to move within just one win of the grand final. Could the unthinkable occur? Could this season’s wooden-spooners also end up as the premiers? That quirky coupling is still a long way from happening, however the team’s gutsy effort against the Tigers has imbued plenty of confidence within the squad. The team’s proud coach, Greg ‘Bluey’ Woodbury, describing the win as, the best defensive effort he has ever seen. The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE – September 2018

Gosford Denied Minor Premiership By Desperate Panthers

DID SADLY END UP ON

by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 13th August, 2018 (not published)

This season’s Central Coast junior rugby league semi finalists have now been determined as the competitions in all the various age divisions head toward their traditional September conclusion. The Gosford Kariong Storm were denied the minor premiership in the U15(2)s division when they were defeated 14-10 by the sixth placed Berkeley Vale Panthers in the final round. Gosford had led the competition all season yet fell at the final hurdle as the desperate Panthers played to keep their season alive. In a tremendous tussle, the Storm had edged 6-4 ahead at the break but found themselves behind early in the second half. A Blake Carney try levelled things up at 10 a piece before Berkeley Vale edged four ahead late in the game. During a frenetic final few minutes, Gosford pounded the Panthers try line in search of a match levelling try. Xavier Hansen and Jake Martin both went within centimetres of scoring before representative back rower Isaac Vuna was held up over the line for the second time in the match. It was a white knuckle finish for the coaching staff and supporters of both sides with victory ultimately falling to the tenacious underdogs, Berkeley Vale. The result saw both Erina and Wyong leapfrog Gosford on the ladder and the Storm will now be forced to face the Roos in the qualifying semi final. Sadly for the Panthers, other results didn’t fall their way and despite their heroic win, they finished the year in sixth spot; missing the finals by a single competition point. The Entrance Tigers have yet again dominated the Division One competitions this season and will start favourites in the Under 12s, 13s and 14s age groupings when the final series kicks off during mid August. The Tigers U14(1)s are undefeated in 2018 and scored a thumping 38-6 victory over the fourth placed Terrigal in their most recent of outings. Wyong finished as minor premiers in the U10s and U17s, Terrigal in the U15s, while the Kincumber Colts have enjoyed an unbeaten run into the U16(1) semi final series. The opening fortnight of the junior rugby league finals will be played at Erina Oval (18th/19th August) and Darren Kennedy Oval, Toukley (25th/26th August).

MOG CUP WOY WOY WIN FIRST EVER MOG

Despite a brilliant, last gasp try scored by Mitch “Mad Dog” Redding, Gosford have failed in their bold bid to win the inaugural Mog Cup. Played over two legs, in a home and away format, the Mog has been won by Woy Woy with an aggregate score of 164-16. Some sparkling footy was played throughout the series and the Storm did well to fight back from their 84-6 loss at Berkeley Vale Oval during late July, to improve in both defence and attack during the second leg clash. The Eye of the Storm Media Conglomerate would like to acknowledge factors pertaining to the choice of Mr Mog as patron and figure head of this exciting new interclub competition. Primary consideration centered on our photo library having dug up action images of the popular prop forward in full stride; running amok for both clubs. His mildly amusing nickname was also a contributing factor. We’ve no idea why an egg cup trophy was chosen.

Wally Prigg The great Newcastle & Australian Test lock forward of the Great Depression years. Prigg played 19 Tests and toured three times with the Kangaroos; leading the 1937/38 squad. In 2008, Wally Prigg was named captain of the Newcastle Team of the Century (ahead of the great Clive Churchill) Left: Wally Prigg wearing his NSW Country jersey back in June, 1938. Funnily enough, he isn’t smiling. The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE September 2018

For The Record A fair amount of misinformation has done the rounds with regards a complaint made about the behavior of a few back in May. To help set the record straight; I have published, in its entirety, my contribution to this complaint. 21st May, 2018. I was in attendance at the Erina vs. Gosford Kariong U12(1)s game at St Edwards College played on the 19th May. I watched the game from the western side of the field. A terrific game of footy transpired and all the boys played it in the right spirit. I was however most disappointed by the behaviour of a small group of men who all wore Erina apparel and who continually berated both their own players and the young referee. Three were situated up on the first floor landing and they continued to bark angry and aggressive instructions at members of the Erina team throughout the game. I couldn’t believe their behaviour, especially given that all week the rugby league community had been advised that this was the, “Shoosh For Kids” round. A paraphrased example of their behaviour was an angry cry of, “Run the bloody ball, throw it wide”. When seconds later the ball was shifted wide and the winger dropped it, a follow up bark of ,“No no, not on the second tackle, bloody think about it!” bellowed across the ground. I felt so sorry for these poor, primary school aged kids as they were given no opportunity to play their own games without these self appointed sideline experts loudly critiquing their every move. When the game hung in the balance, during the second half, an older gentleman down on the fence joined in and the attention of all four turned to yelling at the referee; screaming blue murder at a young man who was doing his level best in trying circumstances. It was such a great game of junior rugby league and yet sadly, it was tarnished by the behaviour of a handful of boorish idiots. Andrew Stark (Gosford Kariong Storm RLFC)
