The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE – APRIL 2019
Vol 32: April, 2019
Well here we go again … FOOTY’S BACK! What a careless off-season it’s been for GK. To lose the odd coin down the back of the couch, or to momentarily forget where you’ve left the car keys, that’s simply being human. But to misplace an entire Division One rugby league team … that’s damn near certifiable! Photo: Andrew Stark
The Central Coast Roosters SG Ball Cup team have wowed Sydney and are leading the States premier under 18s competition heading toward the semi finals. It’s interesting to note that both the sides coach, Adam McEwen, and captain, Ryan Jones, are Gosford juniors. Adam ‘Biceps’ McEwen
Our Gosford Graduates list just keeps growing. Inductee number 25 is a cheeky inclusion. Teenager Doug Cameron (pictured left) snuck into town during the Autumn of 1952 to play two, maybe three trial games for Gosford before returning south to take the League world by storm. See the full story on page 6.

‘DOM’ INANT
from
Head Coach
Peterson The Man Who Coaches The Coaches
Any competitive game is basically a hunting game. You have teams who are figuring out how to hunt properly. Then you think, to hunt properly you need to put the ball down over your opponents line as many times as you possibly can. So you organize yourself into a hierarchy to facilitate that. And that’s not the whole story. You tell your kids – it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, it matters how you play the game. And the kids are all freaked out about that. They say, ‘what do you mean, were supposed to try and win?’. If you’re in a competition, your not trying to win a game, your trying to win the premiership. To win the premiership you have to win a whole bunch of games. The rules to win a whole bunch of games aren't the same as to win one game. You could go flat out as the prima-donna and bend the rules and cut corners and exhaust everyone and win the game … and then lose the next three, because that’s a stupid medium to long term strategy. Or you could be like the superstar and hog the ball all the time and never give your team-mates a chance to develop, but then you get injured and your team is out. So that’s a stupid strategy too. So you think, what I have to do to win the premiership is to organize the team so that the best players lead, but everybody gets developed. And that you play the medium to long term game in a fair and decent way.

Learn how to handle failure. Learn how to handle victory. Work to expand your range of skills so you’ll be better when you play the next game.
The goal isn’t to win. The goal is to become excellent and to be invited to play. Paraphrased extract taken from Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson’s 2018 conversation with Joe Rogan The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE –APRIL 2019

Three season’ season’s ago, The Eye kicked off the Graduates project with the stated aim of uncovering all those who have progressed from playing with Gosford onto the First Grade competition in Sydney. Our latest inductee is a brilliant Aboriginal halfback from the 1950s.

Above: Doug Cameron burst onto the rugby league scene playing for the Young Cherry Pickers in 1954. He represented Country Firsts against City and starred for Riverina against the touring British team that winter despite it being his first season of senior footy. Originally a Chippendale lad and a South Sydney junior, Cameron played all his junior football for the Fernleigh club. He was also a talented amateur boxer and during the early 1950s was a regular sparring partner for Jimmy Carruthers out of Billy McConnell’s Gym. What is not commonly known however is that as a 17-year-old, Doug Cameron headed up to Grahame Park to play a number of preseason trial games for Gosford in 1952.
“Cameron at halfback for Gosford did superb work behind the scrum. He was always dangerous when in possession and his defence was excellent..” Gosford vs. Newtown Waratah (Gosford Times 8-4-1952). Despite impressing all who saw him play, sadly for Gosford the brilliant scrum half decided to return home to Sydney before the competition rounds had kicked off. He would represent Souths in the Presidents Cup competition the following year. Two weeks of national service thwarted his plans of trialing with Souths in 1954 and he subsequently accepted a 3 year offer to play for Young in the Maher Cup competition. By 1958 he had returned to Sydney after agreeing to terms with Eastern Suburbs and he ultimately played 18 First Grade games for the Roosters.
