The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE – MAY 2019

YIKES!

Vol 33: May, 2019

Welcome to our special “Infrastructure” edition. Page 13 features the unveiling of a design for a flash new GK Clubhouse, which has been kindly drawn up for this magazine by Eye-Pad Architects Pty Ltd. Exciting times lie ahead folks. Buckle up, we’re aiming high.

What a brilliant effort. For a small junior club, GK certainly does punch well above its weight. During the earliest exchanges of this season’s CCDRL competition, Gosford Kariong has provided ten First Graders. Harry Mulligan is pictured right having just brought up five years service with the Storm back in 2010. Turn to page 19 to see Harry, in full flight for the Terrigal First Grade team in 2019.

Our Gosford Graduates list inducts its 26th member on page six of this edition. The late Rawdon ‘Harry’ McKinnon is a legendary figure in the history of the North Sydney Bears and our feverish club research recently revealed that big Harry played for Gosford as a skinny, 17-year-old fullback during the winter of 1927.

Huge congratulations go out to our mighty Under 16s who have already qualified for this season’s semi final series.

© 2019 Opinions expressed in this publication are derived solely from the scattered & random thoughts of the author; none of which are necessarily shared by the GKS club … nor anyone else on the planet really.

Congratulations to

Nash Dorratt-Mavin on a series of dashing performances for the Central Coast U16s during the early season representative program. Nash played at right centre for the Coast’s Andrew John’s Cup team before receiving a call up to the Matthews Cup squad.

Harry McKinnon was spotted by a North Sydney official playing park football during the mid 1930s. During the following five decades he would establish himself as the most prominent club man in the Bears long and proud history. McKinnon was born at Nemingha near Tamworth in 1910 and his family moved to Wyong when he was a boy. He attended the local public school before completing his secondary education at the Gosford Intermediate High School. At 17 years of age the lanky young printers apprentice played fullback for the Gosford Second Grade team. McKinnon also filled in on the wing in a number of top grade games during 1927 and his dashing displays for Gosford saw him selected in the District’s Second Grade rep’ team that same year. Harry McKinnon had departed the Central Coast before the 1928 season had kicked off and by the time he found himself making his First Grade debut for Norths, he had transformed into a rangy front row forward. 127 games spanning 10 seasons followed before McKinnon hung up his boots to concentrate on an administrative role within the club. He coached Norths in 1949, served as club president for many decades, and was also chairman of the North Sydney Leagues Club. He is a Bears life member and his sons Doug and Don both followed him into the Norths First Grade team. The youngest, Don McKinnon represented Australia on the 1982 Kangaroo tour of Britain.

INFRASTRUCTURE … and how an early season trip to Bateau Bay has The Eye hankering for some GK infrastructure. Photo – Andrew Stark

The Entrance Tigers’ flash new grandstand at EDSACC

The Entrance Tigers and the Woy Woy Roosters have been recent winners in the lucrative game of lobbying for infrastructure. Following the well publicized arson attack on the old EDSACC sheds a few winters ago, the powerful Tigers club successfully chiseled funding for a spanking new grandstand. Similarly, the Roosters have been direct beneficiaries of a 3.5 million dollar redevelopment of their oval by the Federal Government, an investment that did also yielded a new, state of the art grandstand. All this got The Eye to thinking about Carrington Street and how rustic charm can only win the day for so long. Eye have a dream ladies & gentleman … a dream of a magnificent GK clubhouse situated in behind our grounds northern dead ball line. Space restrictions demand that it will be a cigar shaped facility similar perhaps to Ourimbah’s Sohier Park construction, although naturally it would be far more stylish. The clubhouse would serve as our official home. It would be a meeting room, a hub, an overblown cubby house which could be used for weight training, video sessions, and all manner of small club get togethers. It’s walls shall be adorned with Gosford footy club history … acting as a veritable shrine to who we are and where we have come from. The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE – May 2019

INFRASTRUCTURE Photo – Andrew Stark

Nathan & George take in an Under 9s game, from Carrington Street’s present day “top tier luxury seating”.

The clubhouse’s second storey will include a striking design feature (see page 14), as well as providing VIP seating , and a ground announcers platform. A simple scoreboard may also be included; a courtesy to let opposition teams know just how far behind they are at any given point during the game. The scoreboard could also be used to garner further sponsorship.

“Brilliant try scored by fullback Keanu DeGuara … and on the Bendigo Bank Scoreboard, Scoreboard Gosford Kariong now lead Erina by 46 points to nil.” - Virtual Ground Announcer

Announcements and signage shall provide our sponsors with added bang for their much appreciate buck. In fact the front of the clubhouse itself could well be used as a giant patchwork quilt; a corporate notice board to attract and reward the financial backers of the mighty Gosford Kariong Storm. Eye has a dream ladies and gentleman … and that dream includes bricks, mortar and the acquisition of a meaningful slab of Narara infrastructure*. * Try saying, The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE - May 2019

“Narara Narara Infrastructure” Infrastructure really quickly, ten times.

Left:

A recent newspaper advertisement taken out by the Federal member for Robertson, Lucy Wicks, in which she brags about the local sporting infrastructure she’s help build during her most recent term in office.

THE Appointment Of A Club Grant Chaser Traditional club committee’s designate positions for all manner of important activities. One wonders whether the appointment of an official Grant Chaser (GC) might not be a worthy consideration at our next AGM. The specific job of the club GC would be to identify and apply for every damned grant known to humankind; no matter how remote the chances of success may seem. It would be a wholly scatter gun approach to getting some free stuff. If a politician or a Government sports commissions has cash, then our club GC would slip in the mouth guard and drive hard in the mad scramble for moola. The twelve months prior to every State or Federal election, would appear to be the hand-out worlds equivalent to the ten minute softening up period. This is when the big fish begin to bite.. Our trusty scavenger will bait the club hook and begin harassing both major parties in earnest. Sitting and aspiring local members will be harangued, pestered and niggled to within an inch of their sanity. They will ultimately beg us to take their money and add a raft of stateof-the-art facilities to our burgeoning Carrington Street Sporting Complex. The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE – May 2019

INFRASTRUCTURE

Eye’m pleased to announce that, Gosford Rugby League: the Eye of the Storm Magazine is throwing its full weight and considerable corporate influence behind the Gosford Kariong club’s infrastructure drive. Editorial pride has never been a pressing consideration within the rambling pages of this publication. And with this in mind, The Eye of the Storm Media Conglomerate has declared that whichever of the major political parties can guarantee our club the biggest bag of goodies, shall receive this magazines undivided support. Free political advertising shall be all theirs in the months leading into an election. Needless to say, this is a priceless opportunity for both Labor and Liberal candidates as they scratch and claw each other in that age old battle to win the State seat of Gosford, and the Federal seat of Robertson. Just as a flickering 40 watt porch lamp proves irresistible to any passing family of Bogong Moths, this magazines ample readership and impressive monthly tally of 27 Facebook-Likes, will have aspiring local pollies swarming in our direction. Without wanting to blow too hard on the old office trombone, it’s fair to proffer that exposure on these pages may well deliver a two party preferred spike; a hefty block of votes that could conceivably decide an election. … all we ask in return, is for a few bucks to build a humble little club house.

Gosford Monster St Edwards In Big First Up Win

The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE MAY 2019

by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 8th April, 2019 (not published)

The Central Coast junior rugby league’s opening round of competition kicked off well for the Gosford Kariong Storm as they hosted a series of games at their Carrington Street, Narara home ground. A slimmed down Storm has five competition teams in the field for 2019, down from seven last season. In the non competition, under sixes to nines age divisions however, a plethora of talented youngsters have registered with the club and a bright future looks assured for Gosford Kariong rugby league. As the Storm’s much vaunted under 16 team were forced to cool their heels having received a first up bye, the mantle of headline act fell on the under 15 boys who duly rose to the occasion with a walloping 40-0 victory over St Edwards. The Greg Eather coached 15s physically dominated their plucky, yet hopelessly out muscled opponents; bulldozing their way to a 28 point half time lead in a power plus display. Daniel Fekeila celebrated his return to the side after a 12 month lay off, scoring two slashing tries. While bustling three-quarter and occasional dummy half, Nathan 'Tiny’ Peers nabbed his first four pointer since 2017, celebrating the milestone with a second half conversion that landed flush in the middle of Fountain Creek. Gosford’s win was even more meritorious given the team had played with only eleven boys during much of the second stanza. In other results; the Storm under 14s proved too strong for Northern Lakes winning 36-6. The team wore black arm bands during the game as a mark of respect to their 2018 trainer Shane Townsend who tragically lost his life during the off season aged just 46. An undermanned Gosford under 12s fought bravely against a fine Terrigal team before being edged out 18-14. While the under 11s clash was sadly cut short when a visiting Woy Woy player suffered a hip injury and required ambulance attention. The Gosford Kariong club wish the young lady all the best in making a speedy recovery.

WHAT A RYLEE GREAT TRY !!! Under 14s five eighth Rylee Oakes had the Carrington Street faithful standing and applauding after he’d scored one of the greatest solo tries ever witnessed at the Narara ground.

Old timers clearly remember where they were when man first walked on the moon … and one suspects that anyone lucky enough to have witnessed Rylee Oakes’ magnificent round 3 try, scored at 9.12am on Saturday the 27th April, 2019; will forever remember the moment. The powerhouse number six took what initially appeared to be a standard hit up from deep inside Gosford’s half. He then however proceeded to single-handedly beat the entire Wyong team, before doubling back to beat them all again … en route to running 80 metres.

Gosford Kariong Storm Into Competition Lead

The EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE MAY 2019

by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 29th April, 2019 (not published)

The Gosford Kariong Storm have moved to the outright lead in the Central Coast junior rugby league under 16(2)s competition following a hard fought 24-20 victory over the previously undefeated Erina Eagles. Heading into the Carrington Street Oval clash missing three key players, the Storm compounded their disadvantage early on by unfurling an ill discipline opening half. A string of penalties gifted the visitors a platform from which to attack and the Eagles headed into the mid game break in the ascendency. During the second period, Gosford Kariong clicked into gear as forwards, Hayden Doyle, Jackson Ward and skipper, Gokhan Emeli dominated centre-field. Terrigal recruit Nick Elwin crossed for two tries and his left edge combination with five eighth Jake Martin has been a feature of the seasons opening rounds. Erina were game in defeat and crossed for the final try of the afternoon. One suspects that both these teams will be meeting again during the big end of season fixtures come late winter.

GOSFORD JUNIORS --- Tearing It Up In First Grade ---

The opening rounds of the 2019 Central Coast First Grade competition have featured a host of Gosford Kariong Storm juniors in action. The Eye has been out and about, keenly following their progress.

TYSON POTGER (Kincumber)

KYLE FRANKLIN (Terrigal)

Round 2 saw Kincumber prove too strong for Terrigal, winning 40-12 at Duffys Road. Four Storm juniors were on show. Tyson Potger nabbed a hat-trick for the Colts, Harry Mulligan scored two long distance tries for the Sharks, Kyle Franklin leapt like a bird on the wing, while the CCDRL Rookie of 2018, Lachie Bell was unluckily forced off with a leg injury during the games opening exchanges.

LACHLAN BELL (TERRIGAL)

It was initially feared that Lachie had suffered a fracture to his right fibula however it was later revealed that the damage was wholly ligament based. Good news is that he should be back playing in a couple of weeks.

On the following Sunday, Erina traveled to Sohier Park where a further four GK juniors were on show; Jack Carlisle, Bryce Holland, Tommy Bateup and debutant Callum Clyne.

Callum is pictured above in the thick of the action during his first grade debut for the Ourimbah Magpies in their round 3, Sohier Park clash with the Erina Eagles. He was previously a key member of the premiership winning Gosford Kariong Storm U13(2)s which famously traversed the 2014 season without suffering defeat.

And furthermore … Storm junior Ryan Jones (pictured above left) is expected to be rushed straight back into the Ourimbah forward pack once his SG Ball Cup commitments have been completed. Billy James (pictured above right) may not be a Gosford junior, but he is a former GK Open Grade player and he too has reached First Grade. Billy scored Woy Woy’s lone try during the Roosters 50-6 mauling at the hands of The Entrance during round 3.
