THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE - AUGUST 2019

Vol 36: August, 2019

GK are in the hunt to win some serious bling in the coming month. As many as four premierships are a possibility. Reckon it might be time we invested in a trophy cabinet.

Congratulations to boom U15(2)s five eighth, Soakimi Aho on his elevation to the Central Coast rep’ team … as a prop forward !!!

While none of the players who appear in our, Mastering the Game spread (page 36) did ever pull on a Gosford jersey, it should be pointed out that Jacob Liddle (Wests Tigers) does have a connection to our club. His father, John Liddle was a star Gosford junior during the 1970s and kicked on to play a number of seasons in the centres for the Townies First Grade team. John Liddle

Question: What do Boyd Cordner, James Tedesco, Luke Brooks, Clint Gutherson, Jake Trbojevic, James Roberts, Paul Vaughan David Klemmer, Tyson Frizell, Korbin Sims, Josh Jackson, Marty Tapau, Josh Addo-Carr, Josh Reynolds, Connor Watson and Jacob Liddle … all have in common?

Answer: They combine to feature in this, aspirational edition of Gosford Rugby League: the Eye of the Storm magazine.

CHASING HISTORY by Andrew Stark

A

s the 2019 semi finals fast approach, the Gosford Kariong Storm finds itself staring at a golden opportunity. The current state of play reveals that; the Under 16 & 14 teams are runaway, minor premiers, the Under 11s with a win in the final round will also claim top billing, while the Under 12s are guaranteed a semi final berth. The history of Gosford junior rugby league dates back to the early 1960s, and never before has the club won four titles in the one season. If in the coming weeks everything goes to plan, silverware will be lifted and magnanimous speeches delivered. The current scenario mirrors that of 2010 when the club headed into the finals with four teams in contention, two of them undefeated. That year saw the Storm U14(2)s, U10(2)s and U13(3)s win premierships, while the U16(2)s finished as runners up. This was the first time that the club had won three titles in a single season since the Gosford Townie juniors of 1967 had claimed the 5 stone, 6 stone and 8 stone crowns.

CHASING HISTORY

The Gosford Kariong Under 14(2)s of 2010 celebrate premiership success. Coached by the incomparable Shaun ‘Bellamy’ Martin (front & centre), the Storm went through undefeated, winning their grand final 20-10. CHASING HISTORY

The 1989 Under 11s grand final finished in an 11 all draw with the teams sharing the premiership. Gosford had a useful little halfback that day. Above:

In The Press …

Gosford Kariong Plotting The Perfect Storm by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 5th August, 2019 (not published)

As Central Coast junior rugby league heads into its semi final stage, the local Gosford Kariong Storm club is eyeing off a remarkable slice of history. In the fifty seven year history of junior competition in the district, Gosford has never managed to win four titles in the one season. The most successful winters to date fell in 1967 and 2010, years in which three premierships were achieved. This season the Storm have four teams remaining in contention, with two of those sides, the under 16s and under 14s heading into the finals as minor premiers. The under 11s are defending premiers, while the under 12s loom as the dark horse of their competition and are coached by the wily Ed Johnson who imbues the fighting spirit of the old Gosford Townies into every side he takes charge of. The biggest threat being posed to both the Gosford Kariong under 16s and under 14s comes from the Terrigal Sharks. The under 11s will face stern opposition from Wyong and St Edwards, while the under 12s need to conjure up a way of toppling the impressive Umina/Woy Woy combination if the silverware is to be raise come early September. That the Storm head into the semi finals with four teams remaining in genuine premiership contention is even more remarkable when one considers that the club only entered five competitions in 2019.

Inspiration Inspiration Inspiration … as we prepare to head into the Central Coast junior rugby league semi finals, The Eye has dug into the magazine’s extensive archives in an attempt to inspire. On this and the following pages a series of photo’s are featured, revealing today’s NRL stars as they once were. Just a bunch of gangly teenagers doing their level best to master this great game. While none of the players ever laced on a boot for Gosford, may their youthful joy for the sport and fierce determination to succeed, act as motivation … DARE TO DREAM KIDDIES!
