THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE - SEPTEMBER 2019
Vol 37: September, 2019
Well aint this semi-final caper a bundle of fun. Four games for three wins. Two weeks remain and we have two grand final teams with two more looking to book their big dance tickets this Saturday. Go get em boys & girls !
Joint highlights of the weekend semi finals at Toukley were the 5 try haul by Brayden Tory who blitzed Terrigal in the U14s, along with Neni Aho’s second half effort during the U12s stirring win. Neni’s second try, where he galloped into the Berka in-goal before deciding to head back into the field of play to side step another defender and the goal post before touching down … was a classic.
While our teams continue to taste success on the paddock, one must concede that its been a disappointing season for newspaper coverage. In past years our friends at the Coast Community News have lapped up our well illustrated copy. In 2019 however, all that has changed and they haven’t published a damned thing that we’ve sent them. Plan B was unfurled during mid-August when our semi final submission (see page 5) was craftily padded out with a whole bunch of general junior rugby league news. The principle tenet of this tactic borrows heavily from the age old rouse of hiding the veggies in the mash in an attempt to fool a fussy child into eating healthy. Sadly, the local rag didn’t bite. Plan C is less subtle. Its known colloquially as, “Cattle Dog” .
Many thanks to Melissa Cahill & Kellie Hodge for their coverage of the U16s tense semi final win over Terrigal. Coming off the bench in tricky lighting conditions the super subs played an absolute blinder (see pages 19 - 24). © 2019 Opinions expressed in this publication are derived solely from the scattered & random thoughts of the author; none of which are necessarily shared by the GKS club … nor anyone else on the planet really.

Central Coast Junior Rugby League Semi-Finals (Week One)
THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2019
by Andrew Stark Submitted to Coast Community News 20th August, 2019 (not published)
The Central Coast junior rugby league semi-finals kicked off in balmy, mid-August conditions at the Erina Oval. A weekend of bright football greeted the large throng of spectators as team’s representing age divisions spanning under 18s down to under 10s battled hard to qualify for week two of the finals scheduled for Toukley. The Gosford Kariong under 12(3)s kept its season alive with a hard fought 22-4 win over The Entrance. First half tries in the left-hand corner, to Mick Maloney and Billy Eden gave the Storm a 10-4 half time lead. A tense second period saw the Tigers desperately attempt to claw their way back into the match however the Gosford defence was up to the challenge. Two late tries sealed the elimination-final. Toukley upset Wyong 24-22 in the under 15(1)s and will now face The Entrance in next weekend's major semi-final. Despite finishing five competition behind The Entrance on the under 14(1)s ladder, Erina was able to knock the Tigers out of contention with a surprise 30-12 victory. Woy Woy edged out Erina 18-12 to set up an under 11(1)s clash with the unbeaten Wyong Roos while premiers Blue Haven will face Erina in the under 13(1)s major semi-final, after the Eagles toppled Terrigal 26-18. The premier under 18s competition is quite remarkably shaping as a battle between two teams from the same club. The Kincumber Colts house the cream of the talent in this age division and many of the players were prominent contributors to the brilliant Central Coast Roosters SG Ball Cup campaign waged earlier in the season.

CABINET REVOLT IMPERIAL CENTRE GIVES GK THE FLICK by Andrew Stark
O
ne chilly Monday morning during mid August, the dark forces moved in
and the GK shrine in the humble Gossy mall was dismantled without warning. A change of management, a directive delivered from above, and a classic email stuff up has “allegedly” conspired to end our food court tenure.
NEW MANAGEMENT PLUMPS FOR NETBALL In the biggest retail based story to emerge from Mann St since the tragic demise of Wally’s World, the Imperial Centre has turned its back on rugby league and quite possibly, all common sense. In an exclusive face to face with new Centre Manager, Joanne Brody, The Eye has learnt that financial constraints and a directive from head office have combined to force this controversial bolt from the blue decision. Gosford Kariong Rugby League - OUT: Central Coast Heart Netball - IN. The Imperial Centre has seemingly opened up the purse strings to become a Bronze Partner sponsor of the Central Coast Heart Netball Club. The dollar value of this arrangement remains undisclosed and yet one imagines that it would exceed the cost of printing up seven $33 photographs per annum. In what appears to be a breathtaking double standard, the new manager claims that the photo enlargement expense was too much for her budget to handle. In further worrying signs for the Imperial , The Eye understands that the latest cost cutting measure involves warm water being discontinued in all of the Centre’s restrooms.
Firstly, I cant afford to keep paying for a photo enlargement each month. - Joanne Brody
The denuded notice board, as it appeared on the morning of the outrage. A single, lonely looking netball poster replaces a once, magnificent rugby league display .

CABINET REVOLT The proud history of the Gosford Rugby League Club spans back to the late nineteenth century when it began its existence playing the fifteen man game. The Central Coast Heart netball team competes in the NSW Netball Premier League, a competition entering its fourth year. Our club represents Gosford in the south, Kariong to the west and up to Niagara Park railway station in the north. The Heart are an amalgam of the Gosford, Woy Woy and Wyong netball associations.
Hey mate, they’re pulling down your display!
It’s an interesting commercial decision.
- A Kibble Park punter alerts notice board curator, Andrew Stark on the fateful morning.
A host of retailers have financially perished at the Imperial over recent years and given all the dead space to be found upstairs, one wonders whether the plan is to entice the Central Coast Heart to play their home games in the shopping centre itself. The ladies could slip into their GA and GD bibs and start flinging the ball about as a Thursday night shopping attraction. The court could be setup in that lonely space in front of where Aldi, the hairdresser Above: The notice board in all its GK glory, back during the good old days (i.e. about a month ago) and the Fruit Shop used to be. Mind you the ladies would have to make do with cold water in the changing rooms and the cost of hoops may well make the concept fiscally prohibitive. THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2019
The Imperial Centre is owned & managed by The Lederer Group. According to the Financial Review, the Group’ Group’s founder, Paul Lederer has assets exceeding $800 million (2017 figure).
CABINET REVOLT A communication stuff up which saw notice board curator, Andrew Stark respond to an early August email by sending his reply to the wrong address is thankfully said to have had no bearing on the Centre’s ultimate decision. Ms Brody alleges that when the Centre had not heard back from the Football Club, she decided to send the wrecking crew in. The Eye proffered that a follow-up courtesy email to the effect that, if you don’t contact us immediately we will be forced to dismantle your display, would have been a more appropriate second step. And that one lost email should never become a hanging offence. Ms Brody confirmed that the Gosford Kariong Storm display was coming down regardless, as an alternative sponsorship arrangement had been struck prior to her initial email having been sent.
On behalf of the Gosford Kariong RLFC, The Eye would like to thank former Imperial Centre Manager, Deborah Warwick and her staff for their tremendous support spanning two years. The Eye understands that Warwick was quite disgracefully given just seven days notice, having worked tirelessly at the Centre for the past 19 years. A big thank you also goes out to Stella Fernance and her late husband, Geoff from True Living Colour who expertly printed up our cabinet’s Player of the Month enlargements. Upon learning of the new managers refusal to continue paying for the 20x16 photographs, Stella very generously offered to continue the arrangement at her own expense.
