THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE - JULY 2020

Vol 40: July 2020

Welcome to your complimentary Social Distancing Edition of Gosford Rugby League. This magazine’s parent company, The Eye Media Conglomerate, is a signatory to the World Health Organization’s campaign to Fight The Lurgy and in accordance, we’ve implemented a strict policy of ‘shooing away’ all attempts at frivolous discourse. We simply won’t be tolerating any idle sideline chit-chat during season 2020.

Five tries to Narara’s very own Matt Ikuvalu (pictured below) has sent rugby league history buffs scurrying for their record books. Gosford Kariong’s most famous graduate ran riot on the right wing, plunging over for a handful during the Roosters big win over North Queensland in early July.

Vol 40: July, 2020

The Eye’s April cover (pictured right) gloomily asserted that season 2020 was dead & buried. Local footy has of course subsequently been found with a feint heartbeat, leaving one to recall the words of American author Mark Twain, who responded to fake news of his own demise with the classic retort,

“Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

Saddened to learn that Gossy stalwarts, Nash Dorratt Mavin & Gokhan Emeli are no longer at Carrington Street. Both lads have thrown their lot in with the cherry red Colts for 2020, having been at the Storm for the entirety of this magazines existence. The Eye must concede that during the opening rounds it’s been very odd covering our under 17s without Nash & Gok being in the thick of the action.

It’s been a great start in Division Two by Mick Sams’ under 15s. Undefeated after the opening fortnight, the side’s been bolstered by the addition of Max Zonno & AJ Marsh who’ve both been honing their skills in Greg Eather’s side during recent winters.

What a cracking victory by the under 13(2)s against Wyong. Trailing by plenty, the trusty under 12s firm of Wade & Aho stepped up, to work their contrasting styles of magic. A helter-skelter trio of late tries gave the home team a memorable 20-18 win.

A touch judge without a flag? Now that’s akin to a cheer leader sans pom-poms, an OPAL Card minus it’s ‘ding’, a lamington denuded of coconut, or a proctologist missing an index finger … these are strange days indeed!

The Eye’s Battle With Officialdom - Chapter 23 A middle aged man dressed in shorts & sporting a creepy smile, is spotted working his optically impressive tool in the general vicinity of vulnerable kiddies … what could possibly go wrong?

Exclusive Story by Grahame Parke

The season began poorly for Eye Media’s Chief Photographer. When it comes to the well versed round hole scenario, Andrew Stark is not so much a square peg as he is half a house brick. So it came as no real surprise that having ventured to Rogers Park for the belated kick off to the 2020 season, our man found himself rubbed out within minutes of flicking the lens cap. Stark foolishly failed to notify the Woy Woy Ground Manager before pulling out his equipment. Unluckily, the game finishing up at the time contained at least one Department of Community Services lads (DOCS), who of course for his/their welfare, cannot have photos disseminated for fear of being identified/traced. Not having photographed a game of footy since the pre lock down era, our photographer made the fateful decision to snap a few warm up frames of the early game and in so doing, he potentially grabbed images of concern. What happened next, however, was somewhat perplexing. One might imagine the official would ask the photographer to delete images of the contentious game. Or at the very least, take his name and details before instructing him that those images must never be published or shared. Yet neither of these options were actioned. Rather, the official simply blanket banned Stark from photographing for the rest of the day. Given that the welfare of the DOCS children was paramount, the official was surely remiss in allowing a photographer to retain THE EYE OF THE STORM MAGAZINE - JULY 2020

the contentious images. Banning him from photographing Gosford’s U16s game against Kincumber, which contained no DOCS kids, would suggest the action as more of a schoolmarm style of discipline. Now I get that the official would’ve garnered a semblance of satisfaction putting old yellow tooth in his place, but how exactly did this protect the DOCS lads? We are all in full support of protecting vulnerable children and the CCDJRL policy is undoubtedly a sound one. Yet the events which transpired at Rogers Park during round one did little to instil confidence in the welfare process. Our careless photographer was pointed towards an early bus with potentially incendiary images still in his possession, while he was barred from photographing a game in which there were no child welfare problems whatsoever. Can someone please help me with the logic here? The New South Wales Government’s Office of Sport stipulates, “If a person is taking photographs inappropriately (e.g. breaching the restrictions or ban in place for that private property or venue), then venue management should request the person to stop. If the person refuses, the police or security may be called to escort them off the property.” So perhaps the Woy Woy Ground Manager was hamstrung by the law. She may well have been in no position to ask Stark to delete his images. Nor may she have been permitted to instruct him not to disseminate the pictures to a wider audience. Perhaps everything that was legally allowed to be done, was. Memo to Stark: Notify The Ground Manager Before You Pull Your Camera Camera Out!

The vast majority of Ground Managers are fair-minded individuals. Salt-of-the-earth volunteers who shouldn’t be expected to spend their Saturday’s wrestling with a heard of surly snappers for their misbegotten images. Taser-Taser-Taser is not something one ever hopes to hear bellowing from the sideline of a junior rugby league game. And yet, who is guaranteeing the anonymity, and therefore the welfare of the Community Services children? Without wishing to attribute blame, the current system is evidently looser than a Brisbane Broncos defensive line. Any Tom, Dick or Sally remains free to keep images they’ve nabbed prior to being asked to leave by ground officials.
