Revolution 0 [E]

Revolution 0 is one of Phoebe’s songs which delves into her battle with mental health. In my opinion, the song is perfectly summed up in these lines, “I don’t want to die, That’s a lie, But I’m afraid to get sick, I don’t know what that is.”

She’s said in past interviews that she is more scared of getting sick than dying, which is oddly contradictory yet understandable.

I think with the wrapping up of this school year we can all relate to these lyrics, “Wish I wasn’t so tired, But I’m tired.” But wait for the ending. No, seriously, wait for the ending. Everyones vocals come rushing in with a beautiful orchestral swell wraps up this relaxed song wonderfully.

Satanist

Hand in hand with $20, Satanist is an upbeat and scream worthy song. With the coming weather of summer this is perfect for having the volume up with your windows down. Satanist encapsulates the boundless feeling of solely living in the moment instead of worrying about the future.

Key Lyric: “Will you be a satanist with me? Mortgage of your soul to buy your dream”

Anti-Curse

The second to last track on the record continues to play on the theme of living your life as it’s the only one you have. Surprise, it is! Outside of this little bubble we live in–school, work, friends, etc–there is a whole world waiting for us. Let’s keep living life to the fullest this very moment, shall we?

Key Lyrics: “Making peace with my inevitable death” “There we were, Was anyone ever so young?

Leonard Cohen

A short and sweet solo song sung by Lucy. The lyrics heavily reference a story they told to Rolling Stone the day the album was released;

During a long drive, Phoebe wanted Julien and Lucy to listen to a 10 minute song, Trapeze Swinger by Iron and Wine. No one interrupted during the song, sensing how intent she was on them listening to the story about a dead person telling the living how they want to be remembered. But because they didn’t interrupt, she missed their exit, adding another hour onto the drive. Leonard Cohen is a quick and comfortable song about unconditional companionship.

We’re In Love

Like the title suggests, this is a very, very melancholic love song. Raw and vulnerable, this track is vocally led by Lucy accompanied by a quiet and isolated piano. It portrays the person she is singing about, and perhaps the person you’re thinking of, in incredible detail. Not only that, but also memories and specifc experiences made and bound with said person.

The lyrics and slow melody encapsulate the many traits that love carries; the hope, the hurt, and the worth.

Key Lyrics: “Will you still love me if it turns out I’m insane? I know what you’ll say, but it helps to hear you say it anyway.” “If you rewrite your life, may I still play a part.”

Letter To An Old Poet

If you’re familiar with boygenius and their debut album, boygenius, you will defnitely recognize the melody of this song. Personally one of my favorites of the album, the transferred melody from ‘Me & My Dog’ but a change in lyrics was jaw-dropping. Upon frst reading the title, my mind jumped to the short collection of letters between poet Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Xaver Kappus, a young cadet who is debating between pursuing a career in militia or becoming a poet. The title of this collection of letters, published by Kappus in his later years? Letters to a young poet.

Is this song and the collection of letters connected? I’m not sure. What I do know is that both are looking for a bright and fulflling future; something that the record embodies beautifully.

Key Lyrics: “But I’m better than you and you should know that by now”

“And remember my dog when I see the full moon”
