It’s been wild BY RACHEL JOHNSON Eighteen years on this planet. Thirteen years at this school district. Four years at Eden Prairie Senior High School. I cannot say I learned the most valuable information or did anything perfectly. But I can say I made a lot of lists. Lists of homework, schedules, and things to accomplish, all on torn-out notebook paper that were doomed to never be completely finished. I met those teachers who gave me more than grades, befriended those people who changed my life, and studied all that useless information which I will never recall. Within these four years, I have cried my eyes out to a janitor, lost friends, made better ones, and lost those too. I have fallen down the stairs by the art rooms as a freshman, laughed with wall kids, built sets with the drama department, and written my heart out for the school magazine. I took classes that woke me up to the world, taught me the difference between spruce and pine, forced me to read a classic book without yawning, make a footed vase, and even how to sleep sitting up. I drank a lot of coffee to stay awake, a lot of tea to remember to relax, and a lot of hot chocolate to remind me of the best little things in life. I wrote a lot of essays that contained nothing but big words, gave speeches that made my hands shake, and pages of color coordinated notes that now live in a recycling bin. My experience here can be defined with panic attacks, laugh attacks, sleepy days, and way better nights. Eden Prairie has been my comfy home for my entire life, but let’s just say I am excited to finally move out.. What a wild ride.

A four year moment BY EMILEE JACOBSON And so it begins. Graduation stands right before us and our eyes will begin to navigate the most foreign of pastures; whether starting college in a new state or jumping on a plane to somewhere new, our last four years of memories will be collected through a box of pictures and seen through our rearview mirrors on our way home from all of the somewhere’s we go. A benchmark in time, which really felt like only a moment by the end, is over. Now, we walk forward with our heads held high in remembrance of the lessons we learned, people we met and moments we shared. High school, finally, is checked off our list. We now anticipate or agonize, the future ahead of us. We’ll wonder about the places we’ll go, the people we’ll meet and even the obstacles we’ll face. The people we are today won’t necessarily be here tomorrow. Remember your freshman self? Compare him or her to who you are now. Different. Our lives from now on will be filled with more and more stages of different. Some days will be good, some will be great. Someday you’ll wish you could go back to being in high school; today you might wish it would just end. Either way, our lives are just measured by moments of time. High school was a four-year moment, and we all lived through it. I think that deserves a round of applause on its own. Often, we forget to realize the blessings that surround us; the people who helped us become our true selves or the ones who made us realize who we wanted to be. We forget the smiles and excitement, and dwell on the tears and pain. We don’t realize just how great we really had it. We don’t realize just how great it is to be experiencing the joys and sorrows life has to offer. We forget that these feelings are all a part of who we are and contribute to who we will be. Today, I realize that in the grand scheme of things none of it matters.

These four-years brought about some of the best and worst moments of my young life. What really matters are the things we carry onto our next journey. The things that make us, in the simplest form: us. So, today, choose to leave behind the things that left you broken. Instead, bring along the things that make you whole. Spread your wings, Eagles: the time is now. Don’t take anything for granted for time goes faster than you think. Don’t stay stuck in high school; there’s a reason it only lasts four years. Remember the people and things who make you, in the simplest form: you. Advocate for others, it’s better to be the person who does rather than the one who doesn’t. Lastly, remember to not take things so seriously (something I fail to do myself). In order to experience the best of life, you do have to actually live it. High school may be over, but your life surely isn’t. In fact, it’s just begun. WE, class of 2017, MADE IT Thanks for every journey & a special thanks to the Eyrie for being my refuge in the midst of them all. Lots of love,

The end result BY TALA ALFOQAHA

After four years and about 3,600 bells, my attendance is riddled with tardy after tardy (I’ve never been the most punctual). And yet, if I could give one piece of advice to my freshman self, it would be to walk slower in the halls. When I first entered these eaglebedecked doors, my mind was set on plowing through the four years ahead of me until I could walk out the other side, unscathed and undiverted from my goal of becoming successful in some field that I hadn’t quite figured out yet (but that’s a whole other story). High school was merely an inconvenient stop in a much larger journey, an item to be crossed off of my checklist. And I had everything planned out: complete freshman and sophomore year with as little emotional investment as possible (i.e. make friends but don’t get too close—that was usually just how it ended up with my school friends anyway), enroll in PSEO junior and senior year, and, above all, hurry. And, for a while, it did. Freshman year evokes beginning-of-quarter lunchtime uncertainty, evokes drifting from

table to table filled with distant friends, evokes immaculate academics, evokes rushing. Rushing from destination to destination, test to test, club to club, class to class. I flitted from point A to point B without any regard for the time in between, focusing all my energy on the end result. Yet I wish I had slowed down. Looking back, the most valuable moments of high school were spent in transience--in car ride conversations sparked by standstill traffic, in after-school congregations around east commons tables, in ignoring bell-rings, in buses, in hallways, in all the moments in between that we rush past in pursuit of some marginally significant destination. In the end, my master plan didn’t quite work out anyway. Sophomore year, I befriended an amazing group of friends who forever changed my view on the value of building and maintaining meaningful relationships. Junior year, my legs were leaden with years of running— bear with the metaphor here—and I stumbled. I received my first A-, which, in hindsight, is a ridiculous thing to be upset over, yet at the time it felt as though my world was crashing down on me. I didn’t enroll in PSEO--instead, I made the best decision of my high school career and joined the school newspaper. And senior year, I began to walk slower in the hallways. I just wish I had earlier.

Take a break BY DUSTIN WOLF I didn’t learn anything very helpful during formal education, but I did learn one thing. I don’t want to just live an average life. You know the life where you go to college and come out with tons of student debt? Live paycheck to paycheck. Work at a job you hate, with people you hate. After college you just keep working yourself into a ditch. School is great, but to be completely honestly I think I’ve learned more useful information from books than I have from classes.Instead of working to death, I would rather live with financial freedom and enough time to do the things I love. Anyway, back to school. A lot of people feel that in order to be successful they have to go to college directly after high school. I’ve already made the decision to take a gap year after I graduate. It’s been proven that people who take a gap year tend to get better grades, they’re happier with their decision, and they have better time management skills. Choosing to take a gap year can be life changing for some people. Many millionaires decide to not even attend college. I’ll end with this quote by Herbert Bayard Swope: “I can’t give you a surefire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: Try to please everybody all the time.”

BY SAWYER HILT

A fresh start [ 4 ] · theeyrie.org · June 2017

Looking back on high school, I’m not sure I made much of an impression at EPHS. I never put in the effort to achieve anything, and I only studied for tests a handful of times during all four years of high school. Although I participated in several after school activities, I never played an active role in any of them, and I used a lot of them merely for my college applications. The truth is that I have been a slacker all four years that I have attended EPHS. I have focused more on my personal life, work, and interests than my homework, and honestly, I don’t regret it one bit. While my below-average GPA certainly isn’t going to turn any heads, I still managed to get into a decent college when it was coupled with my test scores. In every AP class that I took, I remember listening to people talk about how close their A- was to an A, or how that last practice quiz we took bumped them down half of a percentage point. I probably should have cared about my grades more than I did, but I’m still not sure if I believe in the perfectionist mindset that many AP students seemed to have. Either way, what I am definitely thankful for is the fact that with the onset of adulthood, we all have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves. Maybe you were always too quiet and never made as many friends as you hoped to, or maybe you’re like me and you just didn’t put much effort into your schoolwork. Whether you are entering the workforce, the military, taking a gap year, or going to college you have the opportunity to become a better version of yourself. While keeping in contact with family and friends from high school is a goal for many of us, don’t waste the opportunity that you have now to do what YOU want. Your youth is when your life is the most open-ended. The next few years of your life may be the only opportunity you have to travel, or move somewhere new. Whether you are going out of state for college or work, or you are sticking around in Minnesota, don’t forget to prioritize yourself, there’s a reason that “you” is three-fifths of the word “youth”. High school only lasts four years. For some, that seems like an eternity, but at least for me the time has flown by. I still feel like the same freshman who had no idea how to get to his classes, and who rolled his eyes when Mr. Hennen told my connections class how quickly high school would go. Four years later, I can say that Mr. Hennen was right, and that it really is not that hard to navigate the high school.

Make it a great life, or not BY KATE STAGER Since the first day of senior year, everybody counts down the days until graduation and leaving everything in high school behind. All I know is that senior year goes by the fastest. High school feels like casserole of emotions. One day you are pulling your hair out because of finals and your college applications, the next week you are beyond excited for your prom. I also know that I took most of it for granted. You think it’s so long until graduation but it’s not. You’ll blink and suddenly it’ll be 75 days past graduation and some of you will be packing up your childhood bedroom and saying some very hard goodbyes. When I think about graduating from high school, I get a knot in the pit of my stomach. It’s difficult to describe - a jumble of fear, a pang of regret, and sprinkles of nervousness with a side of excitement. A fear develops because I’m afraid I might not find the answers to all the questions I have- or worse, when I do find them, I might not like the answers at all. Cherish every minute no matter how long it may seem. Go to every football game and as many school events as possible. Don’t be afraid to go have fun and hangout with friends on a school night, or get up extra early to work out, watch the sunset or make yourself some breakfast. It’s in such detail that I can almost feel the bittersweetness of leaving, the nerves churning in my stomach. We all may not have gotten to know each other on a personal note, but we all still acknowledged each other’s existence. And if anything, that’s still amazing, because we all still cared.

As senior year is coming to an end, there are still many things left unsaid and undone. I want to remind people that I personally stopped keeping in touch with, and some people I never had the opportunity to get to know, and I just want to congratulate you and thank you for always being there personally in my life. So this is it- the very last days of the life we have grown so comfortable with. Bidding farewell to high school allows us to keep all the great memories while still moving forward in our lives, to change the world as adults rather than holding onto the past like children. Thank you class of 2017 and EPHS. I’ll never forget you.

BY MICKEY VENKATESWARAN Be loyal to your friends. Be there for them because you’re going to need them to be there for you at some points. People are going to talk behind your back. Try to ignore it. They’re behind you for a reason.

What I learned in school...

Schoolwork is pretty important. Put actual effort into it and do it as it was assigned to do. Don’t let it get in the way of more important things though. Spend time outside. Often. It’s calming and you’ll learn to appreciate what’s always there and get off social media. Don’t mesh in with the crowd because it’s there. Advocate for your individual thoughts and opinions. Don’t be afraid of getting shamed for what you think. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” Make your opinions based on facts rather than emotion. It makes more sense. Take lots of pictures. Just don’t let it get in the way of what you’re actually doing. High school ends. Friend groups and social circles shouldn’t matter. Branch out a bit. Read. Whether it’s articles, books, or whatever. It’s how you learn.

A letter of recommendation

BY ADDIE MARZINSKE As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that time is always ripe to do what is right.” So although our time together is few in numbers, the time left to do right and to do good is still in its prime. I know that I have made many mistakes in high school and in life, and I will continue

to. There are many things I wish I could go back and change, but I can’t. Instead, I can do my best to make amends, for myself and for those I may have impacted with these mistakes. I have no desire to leave this school and the (700+) of you that went on this journey with me with negative thoughts in my mind. High school is a place built around kids and young adults learning, learning about school required classes, obviously, but also learning about who we are as individuals. Make a mistake, make a big one, but make sure you learn something from it. We cannot continue to grow, as individuals or as one kind, without mistakes. Innovation as a whole will cease to exist without a mistake or two. We will only move backwards. Please make time to enjoy these final days, stop worrying about next week, or next month. Life as you know it will never be the same. Stop. Take it in. Breathe. Now smile. Make the memories of this school and this way of life something you will cherish. You will miss it. It is no lie when they say high school is hell, it is a time of constant changing, nothing is predictable, and nothing is boring, and you know stress like the back of your hand. But when the end comes, it comes all too soon. If you’re like me, you have spent the past four years pushing, push through math class, push through self esteem issues, push through that fight you had last night with your best friend, push that big assignment off to the last minute. Push. All I ever knew was push, because that was the only way I knew how to survive. I kept my head down and pushed, never looking up. But now, looking back, there was so much that I missed. Please, look up. Forever an Eagle. Forever, Addie.

Rage against the light at the end of the tunnel BY ALLY COTTRELL There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. You say it when you want to get through something--that you can see the ultimate reward at the end of the seemingly endless menial tasks needed to get there. Here is A, there is B, and we want the quickest path to the end, that glowing utopia where lost checklists and scattered motivation simply disappear once the goal is achieved. We don’t think about what’s next after that. We focus singularly on that one point in life, ignoring the fact that we never stay forever in a singular point. But, why is there a tunnel? It never ends up being straight. It resists with all its considerable might and tugs to and fro until it ends up swerving across the dense darkness to that tantalizing light. What is it surrounded by? The point B is light by comparison, so the darkness must be utter and complete, suggesting that each and every mindless and impossible task holds no joy in it. We’re all just putting one foot in front of another and another until the light is here. Regardless of what we do once we finally reach it, the striving is what pushes us on. It’s almost easier that the light is out there. It’s something to utterly crave and not something to mindlessly achieve on a Tuesday afternoon when all you want to do is exist on a Friday. What scares me is the idea that the light might never be enough. If we stop yearning, striving towards the light in constant battle against the mentality of it all, what is left? We can’t look back. It’s never mentioned in cliché phrases, so that’s an unknown. If we can’t ever reach the utopian ideal of B, the tunnel will never be enough. So, I hereby suggest removing the tunnel. If you remove the tunnel, it just becomes walking. Forwards, forwards, forwards, with trips and leaps and skips and accidental falls, but forever moving. Each step is its own victory. But, if the step is not made and you have to make a swift detour around that specific patch of life, you’re completely fine. The tunnel doesn’t block the sides. You’re free to move, live, and exist on your own outside of the constraints you put on yourself when you remove the possibility for detours.
