Class of 2021

How did COVID change your year?

Siwar Abu Saymeh: Covid took away many games, dances, being with and seeing friends everyday, and mostly lots of school freedom. Emma Anderson: I wasn’t able to take a couple of classes that I really wanted to take, but it worked out in the long run. Timo Aranjo: During the transition between full online and full in person school, I had more free time. Other than that though, the masks were a little uncomfortable at first, but now I do not notice unless it is hot or I am thinking about it. Sydney Ballard: I did class online because I am in a OATC program and it made the OATC very chaotic. Ayden Blachowics: It made it so much worse and less enjoyable. Corbin Bader: It ruined it completely, no lunch with all my friends, no football or basketball games, no dances, and all the things that seniors look forward to. Brady Beverman: It screwed everything up. Addi Blum: Covid completely wrecked senior year. The thing that bugs me the most is I feel that senior year is what brings a class together, you get closer with some of your classmates and share all of your “last” experiences together. We didn’t get the closure we deserved. Anthony Bohm: Made it the worst year of high school. Britt Mychael: I think the biggest change for me was that I couldn’t do any events or go on any field trips like I would’ve done otherwise. Mya Brown: It made me realize that high school is a small part of my life and that I have so much more to do and experience! Zachary Broyles: Being remote made this year very lonely and affected how well I did on my school assignments because of my shear lack of motivation. Halee Brumbaugh: I went remote for my safety and was in isolation from friends so just about everything lol I shouldn’t be the one to get a quote from this one. Michael Buckendahl: I never thought I would be doing online highschool. Alex Burbidge: The school district kept messing with our senior year, which was very frustrating. That kind of stress should not be necessary for us to just be able to go to school. Alex Cafferty: No sports events and not full time school until March so literally everything. Caden Caire: Did not have fans at

any of our soccer games. Jennifer Canchola: COVID changed our senior year in many ways, but for me the fact that we weren’t allowed to sort of interact in the same way we usually did was strange. Jaxson Carpenter: I never went back to school after 2nd semester. Bailey Conaway: I was upset that most of my family wasn’t able to see my last year of swimming. Garrett Cox: It definitely made it both harder and easier since we had online classes for a large chunk of the year then all half days but now when every day is a block day I feel like we’re wasting a lot of time if teachers dont have plans for the full hour and a half. Isabelle çofani: Covid took away most of the fun senior traditions taking away a sense of normality. Joshua Curry: We were required to wear masks in every sport, and we could not go to school full time for a whole semester, no homecoming, no class parties. Justin Daugherty: It made it much more confusing but ultimately easier. Hannah Davis: It changed it a lot, I’m fully online currently. Its made my situation better and I’m thriving online. Q Davis: It ruined it in almost every way imaginable. Payton Dean: It changed my senior greatly by not having homecoming, a normal prom, sporting events, and more. Abigail Dearing: We missed out on most of the unique experiences that happen during your senior year. Grace DeGranffenreid: What didn’t it change? Alyssa DeLeon: During my first three years of high school, I was involved in theatre, dance, and choir. Both of my parents are healthcare workers, so I have been exposed to the fears and reality of COVID. Because of this, I chose to take myself out of these activities within school and outside. Being in close proximity with large groups of people, especially doing activities that are not necessarily COVID-safe scared me. Additionally, not being able to perform on a real stage and without a real audience sounded so depressing to me that it didn’t sound worth it. I honestly do miss all of my friends in those activities and my source of creative exppression. Lexie Diskin: It has taken away everything that anyone thinks of when they think of senior year. It has honestly been a

really hard year for everyone but I have tried to make the best of it. Abbie Doughty: Had to miss out on the fall activities (homecoming, football games, powderpuff) for our senior year. Mason Engelken: Completely, it made me lose a lot of motivation to finish strong with our ever-changing schedule. It also allowed me to put more time into myself and relationships as well as save money. Lauryn Fatula: COVID has not allowed the class of 2021 to have typical senior year events that I have looked forward to for many years. I have also been online all year which has resulted in me feeling disconnected from my peers and teachers. Brandon Fears: I have not been in the school all year. Danielle Ferguson Ticao: It’s legit been all work and no play, football games, hoco, wpa, etc all cancelled. Boston Freels: It made it 100% abnormal and hard to dodge certain circumstances and made everything different. Carter Garrelts: Very negatively considering the block periods and online school. They are both horrible. Eva Garrett: COVID has changed my senior year in nearly every way possible. We had no real homecoming, no cheerball, no student section at football games, no official first day of school in person, no falcon 50, and a senior only prom. Bella Ghan: Most of my year was online and we don’t get a normal prom or graduation. Archisa Ghimire: I went online all of senior year, so it was not a traditional senior year, but I still enjoyed it nevertheless. Jaxon Gilner: There was a lot of uncertainty this year and I learn to be really flexible with plans and schedules. Jonah Gonzales: Took away most of the things I was looking forward to. Madison Gordon: It changed everything. It canceled everything. I can almost say that Id rather consider my Junior year to be my Senior year, than my actual Senior year. Kylie Grant: It changed everything for my senior year, nothing about this year was normal. It made me adapt to thing very quickly with constant changes. Emily Gray: I didn’t get to do a bunch of things that past seniors had talked about so that was upsetting. Gery Gresz: I think it made it less fun but more memorable and provided some more career opportunities.

Olathe South

How did COVID change your year?

Carter Groebe: As if it wasn’t obvious, a lot of oppurtunities were taken away and we all have to wear masks. Karah Groves: No powderpuff or a student section for football games. Nicholas Haight: It ruined it. I had a bucket list for my senior year that I was really looking forward to getting done. I was going to get involved and have fun and that’s something I can’t get back. Madeline Hall: It took away all the fun of senior year and just left us with the school part. Cooper Harn: It got rid of everything that school has to offer that makes it actually enjoyable. Logan Harris: Changed school a little bit and we have to wear these mask but other than that none, not really. If it’s my time to go it’s my time to go. Tyler Harris: Made it not as fun, but has made it go by super fast. Ren Harrison: Not being able to have a lot of football games. Alexandra Heinson: Missing the beginning of my senior year, and not being able to go to varsity games. Brady Hogan: It forced me to grow and adapt to new conditions and taught me a lot. Hannah Holy: I enjoy the half days during hybrid, I feel like it gave me a life outside of school. Hailey Horton: It made me more flexible and changed how I view things. Matthew Howell: Due to Covid, a number of activities that I had been looking forward to did not happen. Tyler Hunt: I haven’t had a normal day of school in over a year. Kallie Jackson: I graduated early so I never really got to do anything for my senior year. I was mostly doing online for my senior year. Giselle Jackson: It made us all miss out on fun experiences. Ashley Jones: It prevented me from doing many things I have always looked forward to doing as a senior.

Louis Katzer: It was hard at times but I don’t think I will ever forget this year. Blake Khatchadourian: Made me re-think how much I actually liked going to school. Honestly wish I could have gone this year. Morgan Kleffner: Covid definitely changed a lot, we missed out on a lot of experiences like football games, homecoming and just having a normal senior year in general. It definitely taught me to take things as they come and to find the brighter side in situations where it is hard to see any good in them. Emma Knappenberger: It took away a lot of oppurtunities and events that would have been able to happen during a normal year. It also limited the number of family members I could have come to my games. Will Koning: In every way? I was learning stats in my kitcken. Tell you much? Steven Lancaster: Made it both easier and harder at the same time, as well as making full time school exponentially more exhausting. Alyssa Lebaron: I didn’t get to experience all the great and memorable parts of senior year and I also didn’t get to spend it with a majority of my favorite classmates. Eli Lehman: Not as much time with friends. Scott Letourneau: Honestly, I liked this year the most. More time to work, hang out, work out, and it never felt wasted. Please keep either the Block schedule or Hybrid schedule. Don’t go back to full in-person 7 classes per day. This was an amazing year! Sydney Liperoute: It totally ruined marching band which I’ll always miss. Gagani Liyanawaduge: Senioritis hit harder. Abigail Loveall: It made us miss some of the things we looked forward to, but it made me appreciate the little things that we did get more than I would have. Alek Mackey: I wasn’’t able to

photograph as much as I wished. Sourabh Marre: Took away wrestlling for me and the transition to college feels like it will be rough. McKenzie Mason: Well, it didn’t feel like senior year at all and we missed out on all of the “last firsts”. Barbara McLin: It made things less fun and less normal. It restricted a lot of things I wanted to do this year. Having asthma and wearing a mask all the time really wears a person down. Covid has also helped me change because it made me realize that it is not goof to take advantage of things given to you. It taught me that life is short and you should live to the fullest, becuase you never know when it will end. Isaiah McMullen: It makes you grateful for the small things. I would have never been greateful to be in school with my friends before Covid. Now being in school with the boys is something to be happy about. Jordan McWilliams: We didn’t get to go to basketball games or have a senior night for football with all of the students. Anna Meganck: It changed my year completely, changed cheerleading more than anything. But we made the best of it and still made a lot of amazing memories. Parker Mogolov: We couldn’t do any group activities or pep assemblies., and my soccer senior year had no fans. Karen Morales: Covid-19 impacted my senior year so much. Covid took away students at football/ basketball games, homecoming, powderpuff, Falcon 50, and so so much more. There was no normalcy in the school year which made it seem like this wasn’t my senior year. Covid-19 also took away any motivation that I had. Classes were hard and staying on top of things almost felt impossible. But, Covid also taught me the importance of staying positive (no matter how hard things get).

Kaden Morse: I didn’t have to go into school so my senior year has been much better than all previous years. Anna Murphy: COVID made is difficult to have sports and normal school activities, but everyone did as much as they could. Hailee Murray: It ruined it, no sports games, homecoming, hybrid was nice because I had a lot of free time but everything was completely different. Jaelyn Nathaniel: It made me more appreciative of my other years. Videl Nelson: I feel like COVID has reduced a large portion of my school related stress given that all of my classes are online, but it has also made it harder to maintain friendships as I don’t talk to people often. Cooper Nicks: It made it weird for sure, but I eventually adapted and grew to like the new changes. Hayley Nielson: COVID stopped me from having many opportunities to dance with my dance team and go to school dances with some of my best friends. Anna Palacio: My senior dance season turned out to be nothing like we planned it would be. In March before the shut-down the returning seniors and I talked endlessly about our plans for this year and we were so excited. I hope next year’s team gets to go to Nationals. Gabrielle Patterson: Covid made it so I couldn’t go in school learning to enjoy my senior year. Brooke Peters: It mostly just took away all the fun things about high school. We did not get to go to sporting events or participate in clubs or even be in person with out friends. It felt like we were not even seniors. Riley Pfeifer: I was virtual all year so I barely even felt like a student. But I liked being in my own space instead of in a crowded school. Tori Pickering: It changed everything. It changed the way we ate lunch, walked through the hallways, the bathroom, seminar, am students, pm students, remote learning then in person learning, classroom teaching, and overall WEARING MASKS 25/7. If you were in a sport you had to wear a mask at all times. Kai Porter: No sports games and a

crazy schedule. Alexandra Radakovich: The class of 2021 was literally robbed of our senior year because of COVID. Micaela Reiss: A lot of the fun things I’d been looking forward to about being a senior couldn’t happen. Adriana Rios: Not able to go to the activities as the previous years. Not having Homecoming and Winter prom dances. Brooke Robinson: I originally planned on going to a lot of the sporting events and dances this year, but COVID ruined that. I am planning on going to as many things that I can in the spring. Mason Romero: We did not get a proper first semester with any of the fun “senior” events. Daralyn Ruiz Morales: Felt like a movie, everything changed so quickly that I never had the opportunity to say goodbye to my friends and families that I lost. Sandra Santos: I was disconnected from everyone, only able to communicate through a microphone on a buggy laptop. I missed out on my last marching performance and my last track meet. Kara Schlenk: My drum major marching season was taken away from me. I didn’t get to lead the band the way I’ve seen all my friends do years past. Izzy Secor: I missed out on prom and senior year. Audree Sirois: I graduated in december, so I only spent the equivalent of 12 full school days in olathe south. I didn’t get anything

Class of 2021

close to a traditional senior year, but I did online school with my friends and tried to make the best of a bad situation, but hopefully next years seniors won’t have to say goodbye that way. Hailey Slaughter: It completely ruined it, I feel as if nothing really happened this year and I’m pretty disappointed about it. All the things I’ve looked forward to over the past 3 years I didn’t get to have and it’s just really disappointing. Donte Smith: At first it was difficult, but then it became positive for myself. Fletcher Smith: There were less activities to go to, and the activities we did go to were severely limited. Naomi Solomon: Senior year is something you plan for since freshman year and COVID made everything unpredictable. I am big on plans and knowing what is going to happen but this year I learned to play everything by ear which was not the easiest. Avery Spake: I never got to meet my graduate class. Loren Spellman: It made it harder to do the activities I love, and taught me things we often take for granted aren’t guaranteed. Kiara Stecklein: It made my senior year very confusing, we had to go through so many changes, including hybrid, remote, and now the weird schedule we have now. It also took away one of my favorite parts about school which was Falcon 50. Brett Stewart: In every single way; I feel like the question should be “How did it NOT change my senior year,” and to that I say, I have no Idea.

Olathe South Margot Stewart: It sucked not having Falcon 50 and some other dances and games but I’m glad we got to have prom. Liz Stoeck: My tennis season got shorted, we didn’t get football games, no homecoming, and no senior outing to name a few. It most definitely wasn’t what I expected my senior year to go like, and being online was horrible, but at least we get a prom. Sam Stoeck: It didn’t affect much. Things were cancelled and not normal, but life happens you know? There’s no point in making a huge fuss about it or losing sleep over it. Personally it has taught me to be more flexible and to take life as it happens. Raheim Stone: It changed my senior because I was thinking that my senior would be fun but instead it got chopped in half pretty much. Amanda Strong: Got to see and talk to less people and made it so school didn’t matter to me. Positively, it gave me more time to work and make money. photos by Anna Palacio

Shalika Subramanian: It took away a lot of lasts (homecoming, football games, competitions). Katarina Tasic: Senior year has been gravely disappointing. We lost opportunities for senior outings, dances, etc. which was all something I was really looking forward to. Luckily, we got Prom in May and it seems like we’ll graduate on time. Riley Vandaveer: It made things more difficult, but more meaningful for the things I got to do! Michaela Vanden Hull: Everything, I feel like I got skipped over in celebrating my last year of high school. Jordan VanMeter: Made sports and lunch a lot less fun and the long class periods sucked but it made the first semester very easy so I didn’t mind. Jack Varone: It made me realize we only have so much time and how quick everyday can be. Aliyah Velasquez Pullin: The same as anyone else. It took away countless opportunities, events, performances,

I couldn’t hang out with my friends or my peers, and generally made my senior year a lot more depressing than I always thought it would be. Gannon Wallace: It made school work much easier, but at the cost of missing out on many normal senior experiences. Jason Wu: Made senior year easier in some aspects and more difficult in others. Adam Young: Made it not feel real.

My friend group had that lunch spot bestowed to us our freshman year by a group of wonderful seniors. I now give that spot to a friend group who follow this criteria:

1. You all must have an appreciation for student art and the work and creativity that goes into it 2. You must all be kind to one another and if one is going through a hard time, the others are bound to be there for them 3. You must all be weird in some way and be okay with embracing that weirdness. This is not a lunch spot for the shy of heart, be accepting of the weirdness in you and those around you. 4. You all must be okay with a stream of loud dramatic theatre people coming and going from the scene shop. Don’t be afraid of them, though their personalities are almost always incredibly enormous, they carry gentle souls and are some of the most accepting people I have ever met. 5. Lastly, This spot is sacred and when you become seniors it will be your duty to bestow it to another group. Make sure the group after you fills the space with love.”
