Five-Minute Flawless Face

http://worldonline.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/

Getting up in the morning can be hard. Getting up in the morning and having to get ready for the day can be even harder. But there is good news for those of us who hardly have time to jump out of bed and get to class in half an hour. I am talking about the five-minute flawless makeup routine. All you need is a few amazing products and a couple of minutes and you will look like you spent the entire morning getting ready.

I chose five great drugstore products that will have you looking and feeling great in just five minutes:

1

The first step is the most important - wash your face during your shower or with a face towelette. Clean skin holds on to products better and will help you look more awake and vibrant. After applying any other products to the skin that you normally do (like moisturizer, toner, etc.) take some time to make sure they have dried or absorbed into your skin before applying the makeup.

{

I like to use a BB cream (beauty balm) instead of foundation, because it has moisturizing properties and is not as heavy or thick. BB cream is especially great for more oily skin.

Product: Garnier速 Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream: Normal to Dry Skin Where to Buy: Target Price: $9.99

3

Cream blush is great because you can apply it with your fingers for a quick flush that will wake up tired skin.

}

Product: NYX Cosmetics速 Cream Blush Where to Buy: Ulta Price: $5.99

2

{

5

Product: Maybelline® Eye Studio® Color Tattoo® 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow Where to Buy: Target Price: $4.19- $6.99

A cream shadow is a super fast way to get definition and does not involve having to pull out brushes or sponges to apply. Just a quick swipe on your lid with a finger is all it takes.

4

}

A quick coat or two of mascara will open your eyes and help you look more put together.

Product: CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara Where to Buy: Walmart Price: $5.06

{

Lastly, some moisturizing cream lipstick to top it all off will keep your lips hydrated will just a slight hint of color.

Product: Revlon® Colorburst Lip Butter Where to Buy: Target Price: $7.49

6

With these products you really will only need five minutes to look wide awake and ready to face the day. Buying the right products is one of the smartest decisions to make when you have a super busy schedule; which let’s face it, all college kids do!

First Friday at Akinz By Antony Brown

N

ot being a Colorado native myself, I’m currently living over 1600 miles from where I’m originally from (Virginia). But from the moment I first walked into Akinz, located at 15 Old Town Square, I couldn’t have felt closer to home. Suzanne Akin, the infinitely congenial owner and designer of the boutique, has literally hand-crafted all of the fixtures and product placements throughout her store. The creative use of wooden pallets, beams, and reclaimed pipe adds to the industrial feel— it’s as if you’ve wandered into the middle of an artist’s loft, and she’s inviting you to see her next great project. Akinz specializes in custom made beanies, in addition to a wide variety of t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and handmade jewelry. First Friday is an event Akinz holds

every first Friday of the month that showcases the talents of a local artist. The artist displays their paintings throughout the store, and a select number of them are then available to be instantly printed onto a t-shirt for you to take home! The entire process takes less than 5 minutes, ensuring that you receive a fantastic, custom-made product in no time at all. The artist of the night for April was Benjamin Givens, who works under the moniker “Professor Lunchbox.” Speaking with Benjamin, he stressed that his chosen medium is designed to elicit a certain reaction above others: “It’s a cartoon—it’s supposed to be fun!” His artwork depicts highly-stylized versions of youthful fantasy from astronauts to mermaids.

The flagship product of Akinz is undoubtedly their hand-made beanies. These beanies can be custom made-to-order to get the fit and look exactly how you want it. Utilizing high-quality yarn, these beanies are a must when it comes to facing the Colorado cold. The individualized styling ensures that you’re wearing a one of a kind item that can really represent your personality. In addition to their beanies, Suzanne also offers the Verse Hooded Cowl. This hood is a great way to accessorize a t-shirt, again creating a unique look all your own! Suzanne’s menswear offerings cater to an active lifestyle that encourages you to “Find Your Wings.” Akinz offers a wide variety of t-shirts with designs inspired by that motto. The distinctive designs will help you stand out from the crowd of

t-shirts sure to be swarming campus at any given time of the year. The menswear line also includes some fantastic headwear in the form of the classic baseball cap, as well as thin hoodies, which offer some interesting layering possibilities. Overall, I was highly impressed by the wide variety of items Akinz has to offer, for both men and women. From the merchandise itself to the fixtures used to display the items, the entire store exudes a laid-back and friendly vibe that represents the heart and soul of Suzanne’s work. I would highly recommend stopping by this hidden gem in Old Town to experience a First Friday event, or even just to see what helps you express your individuality!

Designer Profile:

REBECCA TISCHLER By Nina Mascheroni

Getting to know Rebecca Tischler:

Q: What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer? A: My favorite part is being able to make wearable art. To make somebody feel wonderful and unique and most importantly comfortable in something that I’ve made. Q: What is the hardest part? A: The hardest part is making it all. To really make money in this industry you need to outsource your sewing. I am not a master sewer and am finally discovering to use my strengths in designing and patterning in order to hire out for the sewing. In the end this is more cost and time effective.

rtist, designer, entrepreneur and all around do-it-yourself woman Rebecca Tischler is a strong figure in the Denver fashion scene. Tischler started out at the University of Colorado-Boulder to complete her undergraduate in Religious Studies and Fine Art, getting her BFA in Printmaking. This liberal arts background has given her a well-rounded view of art and has influenced her fashion designs today. After graduating in 2009, she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology and receive her Patternmaking certificate in 2011. While in New York, she first interned with Aurora Robson, a sculptural artist who uses plastic bottles as her medium, and milliner Victor Osborne. Being surrounded by artists who use their gifts to make a living was inspiring to Tischler, a newbie in NYC. This helped shaped her opinion that “art is as important an endeavor as any other field”. Upon her return to Denver in 2011, Tischler discovered the Denver Design Incubator and quickly fell in love with the space. She quickly befriended Jack Mackovsky, a salesman at Ralph’s Industrial Sewing, the company that supplies machines to the Denver Design

Incubator. With Mackovsky’s help, Tischler approached the board and brought up the idea of the DDI having the Creative Director paid with studio space. While working as Creative Director, Rebecca lowered membership costs making the space more accessible. She created a class schedule, with classes teaching patternmaking, marketing, and illustration. Tischler, local designer Kristen LittleJohn-Lasker and Colorado State University faculty Carol Engel-Enright taught the classes. The classes proved to be extremely successful and resulted in an increasing amount of memberships. In August 2013, Tischler stepped down from being Creative Director at the DDI to pursue her own endeavors, knowing she had established a thriving design community. Her latest project is Studio Colfax, a boutique that opened in May 2014. Studio Colfax is located near Colfax and Josephine in Denver on the “longest, wickedest street in America.” Her designs are showcased with Spanish sunglasses and sandals, hand carved bowls and ceramics. Studio Colfax rotates their inventory frequently and is always in pursuit of new stock. Their motto being “from the artist’s studio to ours”.

Q: Who is your favorite designer? A: I love Alexander McQueen for his genius designs. I would love to put on a runway show like he did. He is the kind of creative and awe inspiring designer that made me realize that designing is about more than the end game of clothing. As far as a wearable and everyday designer, I would say I really love Celine. Q: What is your design aesthetic? A: My aesthetic is clean lines, beautiful textiles. I want someone to gasp when they see the materials, and then for their breath to be taken away again the moment they put it on.

Kendall Jenner, ? l e d o M p o T t x e N

By Alexa Phillips

What hasn’t the Kardashian/Jenner empire dominated? Kim and Kanye landed a Vogue cover; Bruce is a former Olympian gold medalist; Khloe was married to an NBA player. It seems like it can’t get much better for the famed family, but the legacy lives on for the youngest members of the clan: Kendall and Kylie Jenner. The sisters, Kendall and Kylie, have accomplished more than any of us could at that age with launching their own clothing line for PacSun, a shoe line for Madden Girl by Steve Madden, and even publishing their own young adult fiction novel, Rebels: The City of Idra. That’s not all; Kendall Jenner had the esteemed privilege of walking during fall fashion week in the world’s fashion capitals—New York, London and Paris—all at the age of 18. The oldest of the Jenners has booked her fair share of shows over the years, but this past February, Kendall got the opportunity to walk for some big names: Marc Jacobs, Giles, Givenchy and Chanel. Many were shocked when she walked braless at the Marc Jacobs’ fall 2014 show during New York Fashion Week; critics saying she was “too young” to look that inappropriate. Jenner replied to the harsh criticism by walking in three other prestigious shows over the course of the month, almost unheard of for a budding model at such a young age.

There was debate that Jenner just booked the jobs because of her famous last name or her rumored romantic connection to Harry Styles, a regular at many shows in London. However, both of these are false; Jenner dropped her surname to book her jobs, only going by ‘Kendall’. Even without her last name, her dark-haired, doe-eyed, 5’10” lanky physique has the potential to make it in the modeling world, as it is something many designers look for. Jenner, deemed by some as the ‘anti-Kardashian’, hopes to make a name for herself that doesn’t involve being connected to her last name. Unlike the other members of the clan, she puts her work first and personal life later, her focus on building a substantial career before anything else. Jenner not only talked the talk, she walked the walk. She was a hit among designers and models alike during her fashion week tour. She was seen hanging with other budding models—Cara Delevingne and Joan Smalls—in addition to sitting front row next to Anna Wintour, Vogue’s famous editor-in-chief. She took over Instagram with her glamorous depiction of her fashion week experience for her nine million followers. Not only that, Jenner is genuinely good at what she does, even when being a model wasn’t always her dream career; now it’s like it’s second nature to her. Named fashion’s newest ‘it’ girl, ‘Kendall’ has made her mark in the fashion world, and she’s only just beginning.

old weather can make it hard to have skin that both looks and feels healthy. Although everyone’s skin reacts differently to the rough winter weather, there are plenty of great products out there that can help combat even the worst winter skin.

Breakouts Dull Tight Flaky Dry

Garnier Moisture Rescue Foaming Cleanser is an amazing face wash that cleans your skin and shrinks your pores. It also has no clogging oils or extra additives, meaning it is good for all skin types. Another great product is the Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel Moisturizer. This moisturizer is super lightweight and oil free, making it a must-have product for this winter season. Product: Garnier® Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream Where to Buy: Target Price: $6.39

St. Ives Apricot Scrub is an all-natural way to take off any dry skin and help your face feel soft and vibrant. Each variation of this gentle scrub works differently, making it easy to find the perfect type for your specific skin. Product: St Ives Blemish Control and Blackhead Apricot Scrubs Where to Buy: Target Price: $3.79

Witch hazel is an amazing and natural way to cleanse your skin. This flower helps take away the tightness or tautness winter weather can cause. Witch hazel works a lot like a toner, but it is a lot cheaper and completely natural!

One word: highlight! Applying a product with light reflecting properties will make your skin look dewy and hydrated. I love the Physicians Formula Happy Booster highlighting blush or in liquid form, the Benefit’s High Beam Luminescent Glow. Apply these to the high points of your face (the bridge of your nose or top of your cheeks) to give even the ashiest skin a healthy glow. Product: Benefit Cosmetics High Beam Where to Buy: Sephora Price:$26.00

Use a moisturizer every day AND night. Super dry skin can make acne worse because your skin has to overcompensate and create more oil. Look for an oil free face moisturizer or one made specifically for acne prone skin. Clean & Clear Duel Action Moisturizer is a light everyday cream that has salicylic acid added in, meaning it treats both pesky breakouts and super dry skin. Product: Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer, Oil Free Moisturizers Where to Buy: Walmart Price: 5.27
