2019–20 MAGAZINE AND REPORT OF GIVING

C ELEBRATING FESSENDEN’S COMMUNITY

In Memory of Laura P. Rutherford P ’17, ’19 Chief Financial Officer, 2015–2021 This year’s Red & Gray Magazine and Report of Giving is dedicated to Laura P. Rutherford P ’17, ’19, Chief Financial Officer from 2015 to 2021 and parent of two Fessenden alumni. Laura had an indelible impact on her colleagues, Trustees, and families, and she was a friend to so many within the community. A steadfast advocate for every student, Laura was extremely dedicated to the financial aid program. She was Fessenden’s financial leader and did this well, but she was also, at heart, a person who loved being a part of the school community and understood that the boys come first. This school and its students are better because of her.

“It is with immense gratitude that I share my appreciation to the many donors and volunteers who generously gave their time, energy, and financial resources to advance Fessenden’s mission and support the incredible work of our teachers and students during an unprecedented 2019-20 school year. Your collective generosity to our Annual Fund, endowment, and capital fundraising programs ensured that we as a school were able to provide our boys with a consistent and robust curriculum from a dedicated and resourceful faculty and staff. The state of the School this year remains strong because of the unwavering commitment of our students, families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for everything you do for Fessenden. It is an honor to join you in serving this great school.” — Sol J. MESSAGE FROM

THE HEAD OF SCHOOL In reflecting on Fessenden’s journey during these past several months, it can be challenging to recognize the “old” Fessy norms. Much has had to change with our operations. We spent last spring teaching and learning remotely, and this year we are social distancing, testing students and staff weekly, holding classes and activities in alternative locations…the list could continue. But despite these and other significant differences, much about Fessenden remains the same as it has been, and in several important ways, the School has flourished. As I think more deeply about this period, I know that the core of this school and the true strength of our community have shone during this unprecedented time. This strength allowed Fessenden to welcome boys to campus this fall, and the simple ability to attend school has been so important for our students. Not only has this been essential for the boys’ academic and physical development, but it has been doubly critical to their social and emotional well-being. Opening and operating this year has demanded an incredible team effort. I express my deep gratitude to the Board of Trustees that has led throughout this time, remaining resolute in offering the very best school experience possible and providing the resources necessary to do so safely. I also want to thank Fessenden’s parents. They have been asked to adjust to countless new protocols and policies. These many changes have impacted each of our families, and I am so grateful for their ongoing support and partnership. Rising above all the changes and all the roadblocks, the School’s faculty and staff has excelled in their care for the boys. It is that single quality, which has long been the hallmark within our community, that assures me that the heart of Fessenden remains stronger than ever. Thank you, as well, to the many, many supporters of the School. We have been able to provide the best possible experience for our students due to the generosity of our adult community. The 2019-2020 Annual Fund set a new level of achievement in reaching nearly $2.1 million. This fundraising accomplishment is notable during any year, and especially so during these unprecedented times. Thank you for your loyal commitment to the School during such a critical time. Fessenden also remains focused on completing its ongoing strategic planning process. This initiative, which was paused during the spring of 2020 and will be restarted in the months ahead, will establish new goals for the School. The process is focused on four key areas: on innovating

teaching and learning; on ways to ensure that Fessenden is a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school; on character development as a core component of our program; and on how we can ensure that Fessenden’s community grows even stronger. We have exciting work ahead, and I look forward to sharing our plan with the community when completed. Fessenden has done its very best and most important work for its students and families during these past several months. Never has education been so challenging, yet never has welcoming a student to campus in the morning been more rewarding. It has been remarkable to watch our adult community—Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, administration, parents—work together to serve the boys. Thank you for all you have done to support the School. Thank you for all you are doing to help us operate safely and effectively. And thank you so much for ensuring that Fessenden will grow even stronger in the months and years ahead.

MESSAGE FROM

ADVANCEMENT

OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

When we embarked upon the 2019-20 academic year, we never could have envisioned what was to come, and the support we received when times were uncertain and unimaginable. It is with deep appreciation that I thank you, our parents, alumni and their families, grandparents, faculty and staff—both current and former—for your commitment to Fessenden. This publication celebrates our community from our donors and volunteers, to our students, their families, and our alumni. As you will read, during the 2019-2020 year, donors contributed a recordbreaking $2.08 million for the Annual Fund. The legacy and tradition of philanthropy in our community is truly inspiring, especially during these challenging times. Throughout it all, Fessenden was able to continue providing a meaningful educational experience to the 500 boys both on and off campus thanks, in large part, to your generosity. Please know how deeply grateful we are for your loyal support. It continues to be a pleasure to work alongside a phenomenal team of volunteers that assist with fundraising and community-wide programs and events. On behalf of the School, I want to share my sincere appreciation. Fessenden’s Board of Trustees was challenged with leading the School in truly unprecedented times, and they lent their expertise and stewardship to ensure the health of our school. We are forever grateful for their stellar dedication. The great work of our Parents Association and Alumni Executive Committee continued to keep the community connected, informed, and engaged. Finally, our team of committed parent and alumni fundraising volunteers worked alongside the Office of Institutional Advancement to ensure the success of Fessenden’s fundraising efforts. Thank you to every one of you for your partnership and support. As we pause to reflect upon the past year, we also look to the future. It has been incredible to watch the resilience, dedication, and compassion of our students, parents, faculty, and staff as we have all transitioned to a new way of learning on campus this school year. The strength of the Fessenden community is truly unwavering. Within the pages of this publication, it is abundantly clear how much Fessenden, the faculty and staff, and its boys— present and past—mean to all of you. On behalf of our entire team, please know what an important difference your generosity makes in the lives of each and every Fessy boy. We look forward to our continued work together.

FESSENDEN COMMUNITY CELEBRATES

ONE FESSY DAY OF GIVING On May 20, 2020, Fessenden came together for the One Fessy Day of Giving. We are incredibly grateful to 566 donors from around the globe who participated in the third annual celebration of the community. As in years past, donations made on this day support the Annual Fund, which directly benefits our students, faculty, and staff and has allowed the School to respond to the unforeseen expenses due to COVID-19. Our generous community honored Fessenden’s employees, school traditions, and exceptional education by raising an astounding $239,000 for the School—a new Day of Giving record! As part of the celebration, many families came together for a safely-distanced and joyful gathering—driving through campus in decorated cars and displaying wonderful banners and notes to share with Head of School Steve Armstrong, the Fessy Bear, and many of our faculty and staff. At the end of the parade route, families were encouraged to contribute to a food drive for the Waltham Food Pantry—more than 3,000 food items were donated to support our local community! Participation in the One Fessy Day of Giving by parents, alumni families, grandparents, and faculty and staff is a testament to the strength and compassion of the Fessenden community. Thank you!

“During the 2019–20 school year, we witnessed extraordinary generosity from our community and raised more than $2 million for the Annual Fund. Thank you to the 1,188 donors whose gifts made an immediate impact on our community and ensured the School remained financially strong during an unprecedented year. Your gift was powerful in keeping our Fessy boys learning and engaged—both in person and remotely. We are also extremely grateful to the Annual Fund volunteers who galvanized our community to reach this goal; we couldn’t have accomplished this without each and every one of you! Thank you, thank you!” — JC Stamler P ’23, ’26, Kirsten Hughes P ’28, ’30, Adam Abramson P ’23, ’26 2019–20 Annual Fund Co-Chairs

SPRING

2019–2020 HIGHLIGHTS

When Fessenden was unable to return to campus at the conclusion of spring break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty and staff developed an entirely new academic program in a matter of weeks, and students and parents alike showed true resilience as they adapted to a new way of learning. Through significant partnership, Fessy boys were able to experience a remote learning program that embodied the mission of the School.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS 2019–2020 2020 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

YOUNG ALUMNI THANKSGIVING LUNCH

GRAND ALUMNI LUNCHEON

“The Fessenden Distinguished Alumni Award honors an alumnus who—while upholding the values of honesty, compassion, and respect—has achieved excellence in professional achievement, humanitarian service, or personal accomplishment or has demonstrated extraordinary service to The Fessenden School, thus enhancing the lives of students, faculty, and staff.” Although Fessenden was unable to hold its annual reunion weekend this past spring, the Alumni Executive Committee decided it was still important to honor an alumnus with the Distinguished Alumni Award. The 2020 recipient was Jonathan Raymond ’74 P ’19, who served as a member of Fessenden’s Board of Trustees from 1997–2004 in an ex-officio capacity as the President of the Alumni Executive Committee. Jonathan is the Executive Director of the Massachusetts COVID-19 Relief Fund which supports those across the state who are most impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis, focusing on essential frontline workers and vulnerable populations including people with disabilities, immigrant populations, and those facing food or housing insecurity. The Fund works in concert with regional community foundations and nonprofit leaders who partner with local leaders to understand the response and relief landscape, strategically filling in where gaps are pronounced. Thus far, the Fund has raised over $32 million. Congratulations, Jonathan! Fessenden is proud of your hard work and compassion.

Before Thanksgiving break in 2019, alumni in high school and college returned to campus for lunch in the Sanderson Dining Hall and reconnected with friends and faculty members. Some attendees are pictured above.

ALUMNI HOCKEY GAME

In January 2020, alumni and friends gathered to play in the annual Red vs. Gray Alumni Hockey Game. The game was evenly matched with multiple goals on either side, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed a meal together in Hart House afterward.

In the fall of 2019, Fessenden hosted alumni who have celebrated their 50th reunion for the second annual Grand Alumni Luncheon. Following lunch in Hart House with current students and Head of School Steve Armstrong, alumni gathered in the William R. Elfers ’63 Center for the Arts for an exhibit opening in Munro Gallery by visiting artist Nelson Emmons ’63.

BOSTON COLLEGE VS. WAKE FOREST BASKETBALL GAME

ALUMNI RED SOX GAME In November 2019, students attended the Boston College vs. Wake Forest basketball game in Chestnut Hill to see Fessy alumnus Isaiah Mucius ’15 play for Wake Forest. Isaiah impressed his hometown fans by scoring 18 points!

In September 2019, Fessenden alumni joined Curt Lewellyn, Director of the Ciongoli Center for Innovation, Pete Sanderson, Athletic Director, and Myrhia Brewer, Director of Alumni Engagement and Development, for a night out at Fenway Park to enjoy a Red Sox game. A fun night was had by all! R E D & G R AY M AG A Z I N E A N D R E P O R T O F G I V I N G 2 0 1 9 – 2 0

PARENTS OF ALUMNI Three hundred forty-eight parents of alumni donated to the 2019–2020 Annual Fund. More than 150 of these donors have contributed consecutively for five years or more, and we welcomed 40 new alumni parent donors. This remarkable display of loyalty and appreciation celebrates the breadth of the Fessenden community and long-lasting ties to a treasured school. We are thankful for their commitment to honoring and sustaining the excellent education provided to their sons and to today’s boys. ESTABLISHING THE

MORRIS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

A CONVERSATION WITH HALSEY AND LAURA MORRIS P ’25, ’26, ’28 Ingrained in the fabric of the community, Fessenden is a family school for the Morris family. For Halsey and Laura P ’25, ’26, ’28, their time at the School began in 2008, when Laura worked as a Kindergarten teacher and in Lower School admissions before moving to London in 2015. Upon the family’s return in 2017, their three boys—Pierce, Teddy, and Grant—became students, and Laura served as Parents Association President and as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees for two and a half years. Laura has since returned to work in the Lower School admissions office. Throughout all of their time as part of the School, Halsey and Laura have been steadfast advocates and supporters of Fessenden in a multitude of ways, including through their philanthropy to the Annual Fund and, most recently, with an outstanding commitment to establish the Morris Family Scholarship Fund for Lower School financial aid. Designed to meet the needs of students who benefit from and contribute to the community, the School’s financial aid program supports families regardless of their financial situations. The need for assistance for highly-qualified students has increased dramatically, and it remains a critical priority for the School to provide more opportunities for boys to benefit from a Fessenden education. By establishing the Morris Family Scholarship Fund, Halsey and Laura are significantly increasing the School’s efforts to create important opportunities for deserving students.

Can you describe the impact Fessenden has had on your family?

What motivated you to support financial aid?

Fessenden has had an incredible impact on our three children and, therefore, our family. Beyond the academics, the School has given us so much. From the specialists to the socialemotional support and care, we have seen tremendous growth in our boys since they arrived at Fessy—it’s remarkable. The School is so special and is truly an extension of our family. We want to help provide this experience to other deserving families wherever and whenever possible.

We wanted to help provide very mission-appropriate and deserving children with the opportunity to have the Fessenden experience—one that allows creativity, support, collaboration, friendship, and lifelong connections, which we feel are the foundation of an excellent education.

What is one of your favorite memories or experiences at Fessenden? We can’t pinpoint just one, but the work of their teachers really stands out to us. They spark creativity and interest in areas that we never would have imagined. Pierce loves poetry and social studies; Teddy loves the Ciongoli Center for Innovation and physical education; and Grant loves art and multiplication. The boys were exposed to all of these areas at school, and it is through their teachers’ work that these interests have been fostered and nurtured. We also love the performances. You can see how hard the students work on them, and even the shyest boy finds his place and confidence on the stage—it’s amazing to see. While we can’t do them right now, in-class visits are incredibly meaningful—to see students in their element and so proud of the work they’ve done, and to witness the relationships between students and teachers in the classroom. When you have the opportunity to see firsthand how much confidence the students have, it’s very impactful.

Why have you made Fessenden one of your philanthropic priorities? Even before we had kids, we had an interest in education. We also had an understanding of how important the foundation of elementary education is. Prior to Fessenden, I (Laura) had never taught in a single-gender school before, and when I started as a Kindergarten teacher in 2008, I witnessed the breadth and depth of an all-boys education. There are all different types of boys at Fessenden, and each one is met where he is and can thrive. They are appropriately challenged, supported, modeled for, and embraced. We feel it is an important part of any school’s ability to have an impact in those early years.

Now, working at Fessenden in the Lower School admissions office, having that perspective, and seeing how we are always advocating for well-deserving students to attend Fessy is very powerful. It only helped to cement our belief in how essential it is to make a Fessy education an option for as many students as possible through our commitment to financial aid.

Are there particular relationships you have or had with people at the School that inspired your philanthropy? It all starts with the teachers—the mission only works with them. The dedication and passion they have is incredible. Each year, we’ve witnessed the teachers rise to the occasion and make that mission real for our boys in every grade. There is an excellence and consistency of the Fessy teachers throughout all grades that we’ve experienced with our boys.

What impact do you hope to have through your giving? Our hope is to help provide opportunities to well-deserving students and families to become members of the Fessenden community, and benefit from all that Fessenden has to offer. We believe in the importance of a learning environment where all boys can learn about varied backgrounds and perspectives. The School has an amazing community and really incredible people, and we are passionate about helping to move Fessenden forward in embodying its strong mission. The Morris family’s generosity of time, talent, and philanthropic support has made—and will continue to make—a lasting impact on our community. Head of School Steve Armstrong remarks, “their commitment to the current students, as well as to generations of Fessy students that will walk through these halls, is deeply appreciated and sets a powerful example for others. Because of them, Fessenden is an even better place for boys to learn and grow.”

HONORING RETIRING FACULTY AND STAFF Below we honor 125 combined years of service to Fessenden. The School is grateful to these individuals, who retired in June 2020, for shaping the lives of countless boys.

Lila Bhan

Ken Miller

For 15 years, Lila Bhan educated and cared for Upper School boys as an English teacher and dorm parent. With kindness, wisdom, and grace, she challenged, nurtured, and counseled the boys in her care. Lila was a beloved teacher who encouraged her students to expand their thinking and understanding of culture and the world around them.

As Fessenden’s Food Service Director for 36 years, Ken Miller created a dining atmosphere that was comforting and familiar, especially for our boarding students. Classics such as Fessy Congo Bars and General Fessy Chicken remain student favorites to this day. Ken is remembered for Fessy’s family-style dining, kindness to the community, and his passion for preparing a meal.

“As was the case with many of my Fessenden teachers, the things I learned from you exceeded the contents of our syllabus. As was unique to you, even a casual remark carried wisdom worth remembering.”

— JAKE G. ’11

“Every day I come into your classroom (or Zoom meeting), I always get a cozy and inclusive feeling because of your warm smiles and very enjoyable teaching style.”

— GRANT R. ’21

“Thank you so much for all of your amazing help in making me a better student and human being these past two years. I have learned so many valuable lessons from being in your English class, whether they be about apostrophes or the connections between the book we are reading and real life situations. Thank you again for being the best English teacher I have ever had, and giving me important life lessons that I will remember and tap into for much of my life.”

— KENNY F. ’21

“We appreciate all the great conversations and camaraderie over family-style meals. Whenever we want to be reminded of Fessenden, we’ll whip up a batch of Congo Bars!”

— PARENT OF AN ALUMNUS

“Thank you for your endless commitment to serving the most delicious meals to the entire Fessy community; you and your team always put your heart into every meal and it was evident with the lovely concoctions!”

— FACULTY MEMBER

“Thank you for everything you have done for this community. Your work goes far beyond feeding hundreds of boys and faculty—you always seem to know just when a well-timed, themed meal can turn around the end-of-semester grouchiness, or how a BBQ can lift everyone’s spirits to change the whole climate of the School.”

— ERIKA HODDINOTT P ’29, FACULTY MEMBER

Rosalie Lyons For 39 years, Rosalie Lyons served as bookstore manager and a dorm parent. Never too busy to stop and help a boy at any hour of the day or night, Rosalie provided an unmatched comfort and understanding to Fessenden students, and a sense of reassurance to boarding parents. “I will forever be grateful for the warmth and support you provided to a 13-year-old away from home for the first time. People like you are what makes Fessenden the incredible place it is and the experience it was.”

— DUNCAN M. ’11

“What a difference you made in the lives of my sons, and also in mine. Your positivity and welcoming nature were so appreciated.”

— PARENT OF AN ALUMNUS

“You were there throughout it all, supporting me and cheering me on. So I wanted to express my deepest gratitude to you because everything you do makes a massive difference in students’ lives.”

— ANTONIO SALUME ’11

Mark Hansen Mark Hansen possessed an unwavering commitment to his students and the Fessenden community. For 35 years, he served as the co-chair and director of Fessenden’s English Language Learners Program during the academic year and as varsity soccer coach. Mark, his wife, Linda, and their family selflessly welcomed boarding students into their home, sponsoring more than 1,000 trips and activities. Mark continues to remain very close to international alumni. “Thank you, Mr. Hansen, for being one of the most influential people in my life! Siempre te recordaremos en México!!!”

— DIEGO I. ’17

“Despite how long it’s been since Fessy, your kindness and passion hold a special place in my heart after all these years. I cannot thank you enough for helping me explore life at Fessy and making it a special place, from cross-country skiing and mountain biking, to our dinner discussions and weekend activities.”

— MAX S. ’17

“Thank you for always being such a caring and resilient educator. Your energetic presence, positive spirit, and compassionate leadership are hard to find in one person. You have impacted so many colleagues and students, and we’ve all learned a tremendous amount from you.”

COMMUNITY DURING COVID-19 Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been inspired by the response of our students, families, alumni, and faculty and staff, who have helped those in their communities—both locally and across the world. We extend our deep gratitude to employees and families, near and far, who donated more than 1,000 masks to local hospitals and organizations. In times of need, the Fessy family can always be counted on to help and support others. Below are just a handful of other acts of kindness and generosity. In the spring, several students used their skills to help how they could. Daniel Tang ’22 used his knowledge of the Python programming language and created a public website to help people around the world obtain convenient access to data on COVID-19, including the number of cases and tests, as well as progress on the development of a vaccine. Teddy Thiagarajah ’22 used a three-dimensional (3D) printer to build N95-style masks. Also using their skills in 3D printing were Alex Archerman ’26, Zachary Beaver ’24, Daniel Curran ’26, William Gao ’21, Dean Yang ’24, and Teddy Zhang ’22 who were part of the Kids Print to Protect Initiative—a group of students in the Greater Boston area who printed face shields for frontline workers.

James Fang ’18 and Martin Ma ’18 volunteered through Newton Neighbors Helping Newton Neighbors to go grocery shopping for local residents.

Hunter Willis ’12 worked at a food pantry in Boston’s South End. He shared, “For me, I accepted this position because of the strong values which were cultivated at Fessenden.”

Alejandro ’18 and Alvaro ’19 Ruiz Boughton made face shields at home for medical workers in Monterrey, Mexico.

This year, Fessy boys have shown extensive flexibility and adaptability, and parents have adjusted to countless new protocols and procedures. We are so proud of our students and grateful to their families.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS The School’s endowment provides fiscal stability and is a permanent source of funding to help meet Fessenden’s mission in perpetuity. Over the years, named endowment funds have been established to support faculty compensation, financial aid, professional development for faculty, and to honor excellence in teaching. Unrestricted endowment funding provides income which supports the areas of the School where it is needed most, as directed by the Board of Trustees.

FACULTY COMPENSATION The Alumni Family Faculty Appreciation Fund In 2008, in recognition and appreciation of the education provided to their sons by Fessenden’s faculty, parents of graduating and departing boys inaugurated The Alumni Family Faculty Appreciation Fund to support faculty compensation. The tradition continues as subsequent graduating classes and departing families are asked to contribute to the fund’s growth.

great Fessenden teachers that have been integral to the development of their boys and their love of learning.

Hart Fessenden Fund Established in 1982 in memory of former Headmaster Hart Fessenden, this fund was created through an outpouring of gifts from the Fessenden community. The fund provides support for faculty compensation.

Daniel C. Brown Fund

The Eva A. Mach Fund

Named in honor of longtime faculty member and head of the art department, Daniel C. Brown, who served from 1937–1976, this fund was established in 1975 by Mrs. Robert G. Stone and David B. Stone ’42 and their families to endow the salary of a member of the faculty. This gift acknowledges Mr. Brown’s influence on the School, the community, and the seven members of the Stone family who were beneficiaries of his instruction.

Michael and Stacy Mach P ’15, ’17 established The Eva A. Mach Fund in memory of Mr. Mach’s mother, Eva A. Mach, to honor her respect for teachers and the virtue of lifelong learning. The fund supports faculty compensation.

C. Randall Plummer Fund

Lacritz Deitch Fund

This fund, in support of faculty compensation, was established in 1995 as part of the “Campaign for Fessenden” to recognize Randy Plummer’s decadelong tenure as headmaster.

This fund, established in 2004 by Joseph Deitch and Trustee Robbie Lacritz Deitch, parents of Matthew ’02, provides support for faculty compensation.
