New federal standards for data collection could reflect the true diversity of the US.

Disaggregated data could play a major role in resolving the US’s health care inequities, revealing information about diverse populations that have not previously been counted.

Standards for federal data collection have not changed since 1997. But in a monumental move, the Office of Management and Budget March 28 announced new standards for data collection, to be implemented by the Census Bureau and other federal agencies. Most significantly, changes in reclassification allows Middle Easterners and North Africans to be identified as a racial category, a move the MENA community has fought for for several years.

Granular Data

The new standards — which will be implemented over 5 years — require federal agencies to use one combined question for race and ethnicity. Respondents can select multiple options on how they identify. Advocates say the granular data will also help determine the allocation of federal funds, and could impact redistricting.

Federal agencies can opt out if they are able to justify that the new process for data collection is too difficult. Hardware and

About Kevin Dinh

Kevin Dinh is a 27-year-old Vietnamese American student at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, CA.

He is a returning college student who is pursuing his passion—acting and video production—at his local California community college. He believes higher education is important and that community college provides an equitable, accessible and affordable way for students like him to gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications to obtain the career of his dreams.

California is on the national front lines of making mental health and substance use disorder care easier to access for patients of Medi-Cal.

At an Ethnic Media Services briefing, Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) leaders and community health care providers explained how Medi-Cal is helping Californians needing mental health and substance use disorder treatment lead healthier lives.

An overview of behavioral health

Behavioral health, including mental health and substance use, is just as important as physical health, and the outcomes are intertwined,” said Paula Wilhelm, interim deputy director of behavioral health services at DHCS.

Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, provides coverage for one in three — or 15 million — Californians.

To make it easier for members to access care, Medi-Cal is partnering with community organizations to provide behavioral care like mental health and substance use disorder screening, outpatient therapy and inpatient treatment.

To get these services, members can call their local county’s 24-hour access line.

“One thing we continue to hear from our MediCal members is that the complexity of navigating the healthcare system can keep people from accessing care,” said Wilhelm.

DHCS is transforming Medi-Cal to address this through measures like the Mental Health Services Act funding substance use disorder and serious mental health conditions; expanding

for

early intervention and housing support; and the No Wrong Door policy making appropriate, covered treatment available to all members.

Youth mental health

The youth mental health crisis is the defining public health issue of our time according to the U.S. Surgeon General, and Medi-Cal is being transformed to address it through the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative, a $4.7 billion investment part of Governor Newsom’s Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health.

“For over a decade, outcomes for youth have been worsening,” said Autumn Boylan, deputy director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships at DHCS. “Half of all lifetime cases of diagnosable mental illnesses emerge for youth by age 14, and 75 percent begin by age 24.”

In California, 284,000 kids have major depression, and 66% don’t get treatment.

To address this crisis, “we’re focusing our mental health care not only on hospitals and clinics, but also schools, where youth spend most of

Changes in data collection will attempt to address the structural racism embedded within so many systems in the US including health care, said Christopher. “This is the first step in terms of what has to be done to transform our data systems and to disaggregate our data so that it is a more accurate representation of our superpower, our diverse communities.”

“We all benefit when our resources are allocated in ways that will give everyone an opportunity to truly thrive,” she said.

Christopher spoke at a May 17 Ethnic Media Services news briefing, organized in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to promoting health equity. Other speakers at the briefing advocated for the importance of accurate data collection, in part, by sharing their own rich narratives.

Model Minority Myth Tina Kauh, senior program officer within the Research-EvaluationLearning Unit of RWJF, spoke of her Korean American parents, who immigrated to the US in the 1970s, and owned a corner shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “They worked 14 or 15 hour days, seven days a week. The well-known model minority myth would claim people like my parents were thriving because they were such ‘hard workers.’ But I saw firsthand

their time,” said Boylan. “We’re working with K-12, community college, University of California and California State University systems to have more reimbursed counselors; implement mindfulness and social skills programs; and invest in community interventions,” she added, “particularly for youth of color, those who are lowincome, LGBTQ+, justice-involved and facing housing challenges,” she added. The Pampered Pinay: Weekend Warrior: Succulent Garden

I don't exactly have a green thumb. (How I wish I inherited my mother's garden growing prowess!)

And our family is always busy. So, when we were blessed with a free weekend (a calendar unicorn in our household), our family decided to work on changing up our front yard, making it even more low maintenance and water efficient. The star of the show: a succulent garden fountain.

We've enjoyed a water fountain in our front yard for years. In recent years, though, we've found that bees have also grown to be big fans of the fountain. We still love the look of the fountain, so we decided to plant succulents in it instead. And while a lush green lawn can be beautiful, we're big on water conservation. As such, we decided to swap out portions of grass for rock gardens, especially the area directly surrounding our succulent garden fountain.

To begin, we leveled the ground and removed any remnants of grass or weeds. We happened to have bricks from a past project and laid them out to serve as a sturdy base through which any potential weeds won't be able to penetrate. We then covered the bricks with landscaping fabric, a weed blocking

plastic liner. When cutting the plastic, which is similar to heavy duty garbage bags in appearance and texture, we left a bit of excess around the perimeter. We tucked the excess material under the outermost bricks. For a clean (and secure!) look, we outlined the area with a collection of larger rocks and stones. We centered our empty fountain on the new foundation, and planned out where our different succulent plants would go. To me, this process felt a lot like making a bouquet or decorating a cake -- creating just the right levels and highlighting each component to the fullest. We really took into consideration how certain plants may grow and tried to make the use of their unique shapes and characteristics. For example, because it's a "fountain," we chose plants that mimicked the shape of spouting water for the top portion. We chose "cascading" succulents for other areas in which water would "trickle down." Once our vision was complete, we filled the tiers of the fountain with succulent potting soil and added in each plant.

We surrounded the base of the fountain and covered the liner with a combination of two types rocks (one that was blue/grey, the other more black). I've found that combining rocks gives landscaping projects a

Fountain

more natural look.

Finally, we watered the succulent fountain and rinsed off the rocks, helping them set into place.

It's fulfilling to come home to the finished project, especially knowing that 1) We did it together as a family 2) We're conserving water and 3) It's very low maintenance.

What home projects are you currently tackling, my friends?

Share them with me on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or by emailing me at thepamperedpinay@yahoo. com. You and your project could be featured here.

Cheers to all you Weekend Warriors!

Sheryl Cruz reveals Anjo Yllana proposed to her when they were younger

MANILA -- Sheryl Cruz revealed that she and Anjo Yllana got engaged back in the day.

On "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," the actress said that Anjo proposed to her before she flew to the United States, where she first met her ex-husband, Norman Bustos.

"Actually, nagtampo ako sa kaniya noon because he was actually—he asked for my hand in marriage that time before I left for the States and decided to actually try it there," she said.

"He asked for my hand in marriage, and I said yes," Sheryl continued. "And then I found out na he got somebody pregnant, so kahit papaano 'di ba he broke my heart."

Sheryl said that what happened in the past is already "water under the bridge." She and Anjo remain good friends today.

"It was actually amazing because by the time I went back here sa Philippines, I, myself, got separated and divorced 'di ba 'yung ganiyan. And then nagkaroon kami ng moment wherein we were able to see each other again and we were able to catch up on things and tried to I guess have another go at it," she said, adding that she admires Anjo for being a good father.

"Ayos naman 'yung mga anak niya, 'yung ganoon. Same thing naman for me 'di ba? If you really didn't quite work out with your relationship, then it doesn't mean that you cannot be a good parent," she said.

The actress currently stars in "Lilet Matias: Attorney-At-Law." It airs weekdays at 3:20 p.m. on GMA Afternoon Prime. (MNS)

Alice Guo on identity question: I'm my father's love child

MANILA -- Bamban Mayor Alice

Guo on Monday provided personal details about herself to refute accusations that include her alleged involvement with illegal POGO activities and that she might be a spy. In a lengthy post shared on her official Facebook page, Guo shared details of her personal life, explaining why she had difficulties in answering questions about her identity and education during a recent Senate hearing that cast doubts about her identity.

Love child

“Alang-alang sa aking mga kababayan na nagtitiwala at nagmamahal sa akin ay buong tapang ko pong sasabihin na ako po’y isang love child ng mahal kong ama sa aming kasambahay,” said Guo.

“Na ako po ay iniwan ng aking biological mother bata pa ako noon. At ako’y pinalaki at itinatago sa loob ng isang farm. Pinalaking matindi ang pag-iwas sa mga bagay na magbibigay sana sa akin ng pagkakakilanlan sa labas ng aming hog raising farm,” she said.

Guo reiterated she received her education through home-tutoring services and only knew her mother’s name when her birth was officially registered.

“Ang pag-iwas ko rin pong magsinungaling sa aking mga sagot ay sanhi ng pagmamahal ko at pag-aalala sa mahal kong ama. Sa kanyang edad na 70 ay ayaw ko na pong makaladkad siya sa aking pinagdaraanan,” the mayor said.

“Nangarap po ako at nagsikap para sa isang normal na buhay sa kabila ng kakulangan sa aking pagkakakilanlan. At hangad ko noon hanggang sa ngayon na maipagmalaki

counseling and horse therapy.”

In 2022, Two Feathers was also able to begin its youth leadership development program employing teenagers in adult-led groups to learn how to be future employees, develop social and emotional skills, go on college tours and learn about local cultural practices.

“We had one youth come in a few years ago who was struggling with substance use and on the fence about whether to seek counseling,” said Oliphant. “They entered our youth leadership program and got connected with a peer group, and then was motivated to get connected with our counselors … they’ve been with us nearly two years now and the change has been remarkable as they’ve stabilized their health issues and isolation while learning job skills and connecting with their community.”

“It’s devastating to see how impacted youth here are by the drug crisis,” she continued. In response, “We don’t have a separate substance use treatment service; rather, we’ve included it in mental health services to

ako ng aking ama kahit anak nya ako sa labas ng matrimonya,” she added.

The mayor claimed the questions about her identity during the senate hearing were “traumatic”.

“Traumatic po sa akin ang mga tanong sa Senate hearing tungkol sa aking pagkatao, kasi ‘yan po ang mga tanong na ayaw kong mabuksan, na sana ay mayroon akong mga sagot na makapagpaparamdam sa akin na ako’y isang normal din na nilalang,” Guo said.

I can't blame them

Due to suspicions that were raised regarding her identity after her vague answers during the hearing, some officials even raised the possibility that Guo might be a spy.

break down barriers to access.”

“Expanded Medi-Cal has let us have a sustainable, growing behavioral health program with a consistent clinical roster, whereas before we’d have temporary grants here and there,” Oliphant added.

Behavioral health in Orange County

“When I first started in 2008, we didn’t have any mental health program at all, but I saw such a need for it here,” said Tricia Nguyen, CEO of Southland Integrated Services, a health clinic in Orange County which was first established as a Vietnam War refugee resettlement agency in 1979.

Orange County is the largest Vietnamese enclave outside Vietnam, currently home to over 209,000 Vietnamese people, according to the U.S. Census — over 6% of the area’s total population.

“There’s a generational mental health gaps,” Nguyen explained, “between the older generation who has suffered so much, and pass the guilt of needing to be a traditionally successful doctor, lawyer, engineer onto the kids … so we have isolation among seniors and anxiety, depression and suicide among pressured youth.”

sasariwa sa sugat na nalikha sa aking kamusmusan,” Guo said.

In her statement, Guo said she wishes to meet her biological mother to dispel the rumors against her and prove that she is a Filipino citizen.

Furthermore, the mayor denied she is protecting the recentlyraided Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) firm in Bamban, saying she did not receive any complaints about its operations.

Guo also said there is a Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) office inside the Baofu Compound, housing the Zun Yuan Technology Incorporated, which she said has the “capacity to monitor any illegal online activities and has the responsibility to red flag and curb any unlawful acts”.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos earlier ordered a probe of Guo for possible revocation of her authority over the police. This comes after the DILG recommended to the Ombudsman the preventive suspension of the mayor.

On May 7, the Senate panel on women, children, family relations, and gender equality launched an investigation into the POGO hub in Bamban after it was raided by police and soldiers after it was allegedly involved in surveillance activities and even the hacking of several government websites, among other allegations.

Subsequent investigation revealed documents linking Guo to the POGO establishment. This led the mayor to be questioned over information linking her to the operations of the scam hub, which she earlier denied. (MNS)

The Centers for Disease Control reported in 2020 that suicide was the leading cause of death for AAPI Americans aged 10 to 19 and the second-leading cause of death for those aged 20 to 34.

“Alongside programs like senior wellness classes, veteran counseling, psychiatric rehabilitation and digital literacy workshops already,” Nguyen said, “Medi-Cal grants allowed us to build six-week youth wellness workshops” incorporating arts and crafts, education around healthy sleep and eating, social media habits and parent communication strategies.

“The parents feel that they’ve sacrificed everything for the kids’ success, while the kids feel that the parents don’t care about their wellbeing,” she continued. “Culturally, we can be open about diabetes and hypertension, but there’s still a stigma around mental health.”

“As we’ve grown our behavioral health programs, I’ve seen that stigma lessen,” Nguyen added. “Parents will come in now and ask for a therapist or screening for their child. It’s difficult to break taboos around mental health and substance abuse, but through these programs, we’re doing it.”

Janelle Tee graces her first International Film Festival

MANILA -- Former beauty queen turned actress Janelle Tee debuted at her first International Film Festival for the film "Malditas on Maldives."

In an interview, the beauty queen actress shared her excitement about attending her first international film festival in Nagoya, Japan.

"Excited ako kasi first international film festival ko ito tapos na shoot namin 'yung the whole film sa Maldives talaga kasama ko sina Arci (Munoz) and si Kiray (Celis) directed by Njel De Mesa and nakakatuwa lang kasi official na napili kami sa Nagoya, Japan," she said.

Aside from enjoying her first international film festival, the actress also believes that this is the perfect time for her to end her journey in doing sexy roles where she started as an actress.

Tee has stared in several sexy drama movies aired such as "Durugin ang Droga", "Ahas" and "The Escort Wife", "Hindi ko lang inakala na parang gusto ko lang mag-graduate in

doing sexy films tapos parang wow sobrang grande ng binigay ni lord. I think this is the first time na magkakaroon rin ng Film Festival sa Nagoya, Japan so napili pa 'yung pelikula namin,," she said.

Speaking of exploring different genres of films, Tee also wants to try doing an action project with her dream leading man Coco Martin.

"Gusto ko action na mga genres and gusto ko maging leading man si Coco Martin," she said.

"Kasi siya 'yung icon na ngayon sa action and sa sobrang dream ko rin na mapasama pelikula and sa series niya ngayon 'Batang Quiapo' gusto ko kahit taga masahe lang sa kaniya bago makipag away, or taga abot lang ng baril like 'Ito na po'yung baril niyo', action scene na 'yun," she said.

Together with Tee, "Malditas In Maldives" star Arci Munoz and Kiray Celis also grace the International screening of their Film.

Aside from "Malditas In Maldives" the first Jinseo Arigato International Film Festival showcased other Filipino films including "Chances Are You And I," and "Mananambal." (MNS)

how the challenges that they faced impacted their social, emotional, and physical health and well-being.”

Her parents’ experience was shared by many other AAPI families, but there were few narratives about their struggles, said Kauh. As a researcher, she said, it was nearly impossible to find funding to study the health and well-being of Asian Americans, because data did not exist.

‘So Little Data’ Though Asian Americans currently constitute 6% of the population, less than 1% of National Institutes of Health funding is directed towards studying Asian health. Kauh said that, as a funder now, she often finds it difficult to justify funding for Asian American research. “There is so little data to demonstrate why it is necessary.”

“With the changes recently made by the OMB, we now have an exciting opportunity to improve how race and ethnicity data are collected, analyzed, reported, and disseminated to advance health equity. This is a key step that will better reflect the nation’s diversity and lead to more equitable distribution of resources,” said Kauh. She hoped that the new standards would be adopted by public and private agencies outside of the federal government.

Invisible in the Data

Born of a Haitian mother and an Indian father, Meeta Anand, senior program director of Census and Data Equity at The Leadership Conference Education Fund, had no box to check on forms as she was growing up.

“There was no such thing as multiselect. There was no opportunity to truly reflect who I was. And so I hung out in that famous ‘other’ box.”

She noted that organizations have some concerns about a single combined question. “But what’s great about this is that you can check Asian and Black. You can check Asian and Hispanic. You can check two different ethnicities within Hispanic.”

“As we start seeing more Meetas come into the US, and more people from different backgrounds meeting in our country and having their own children, we continue to see diversification. We need to allow people to see themselves in the form,” said Anand.

The Leadership Conference will be scrutinizing federal agencies who opt out, said Anand. “’It’s too hard to change our systems’ should not be an acceptable answer.”

Mixed Race Latinos In the 2020 Census, 35% of Latinos in 2020 marked that they were of some other race, and 8% of all respondents left that question actually blank, said Juan Rosa, national director of Civic Engagement at the NALEO Educational Fund. “27 million out of 63 million that were counted in the

census did not see themselves reflected in those race categories. So for us, it’s very important for the community to allow itself to self-respond in the way that their houses are actually composed.”

Rosa was born in the Dominican Republic, but identifies as Black, as do many in his community. A pivotal moment in recognizing his identity came in the fall of 2020, when he had a lung infection not related to Covid.

“I went into my neighborhood doctor just to check. And it’s an African-American doctor with African-American nurses. I’m having a lot of trouble walking at this point, let alone filling out a questionnaire. A nurse walked me through it and was filling it out herself.”

Implementation

“When it came to ask about race, the nurse automatically filled out Black for me. And out of all the things that I remember from that time, aside from being in the hospital for 10 days afterward, was that nurse and the vindication and the acknowledgement and the visibility that I got at one of the lowest points of my life,” said Rosa.

“So I have a very personal relationship to the work that we do.”

Over the next few years, NALEO will also be monitoring how the Census Bureau implements the new OMB standards, with a focus on how AfroLatinos like himself will be represented by the new forms, said Rosa.

MANILA -- Actress Lovi

Poe thanked her husband Monty Blencowe for giving her the freedom to continue the things she wanted to do, such as acting.

In an interview, the actress admitted that they are trying to find a perfect balance.

"I love my job, I love working so much and my husband knows it. And sabi niya, hindi na niya 'yun mababago for me. He knows I've been working since I was 15 years old and sabi niya, 'It's not something I want you to change,' and I'm grateful for that. He's very supportive and we've been apart for six weeks, and it is not a typical set-up for most people. But you know what we're making it work and we want to make it work and I'm just very grateful that he's very understanding and he supports it," she told the press.

In 2023, Poe tied the knot with Blencowe in the United Kingdom. The two exchanged vows during a ceremony held at the Cliveden House in England, which is a storied landmark built in 1666 by the second Duke of Buckingham.

Poe also admitted that being in a long-distance relationship is not the typical setup for a married couple.

"It's not the easiest way to do, but I am happy where I'm at, and I'm happy being home here in the Philippines. The truth is yes, I have three different homes but the Philippines for me is still home. I may have projects abroad but iba pa rin siyempre dito. 'Pag uwi mo, iba ang pagkain, iba 'yung mga kasama mong tao, ang sarap mag-Tagalog ,'yung mga ganung simpleng bagay. Kaya I am just grateful that he's there

for me even if I am busy and we find time with each other," she added.

Aside from her relationship setup, the actress also opened up about the idea of having a baby.

"Sa lahat siguro ng roles na puwede kong i-play, probably being a mother will be the most difficult and most challenging ever. Because I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to the characters that I play, what more pa In real life? Because one thing I would like to do perfectly is to be a good mother," she said.

Poe also believes that when the perfect time comes, she could become a great mother. "I just want to be a great mother. I don't know, ang dami kong mga

“THE LONGEST DAY”: DID ANY FILIPINOS

LAND

IN NORMANDY AND FIGHT ON D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE?

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Greetings!

Have any of you – my dear readers – seen “The Longest Day”?

For those of you who haven’t – “The Longest Day” is a 1962 American epic war film based on Cornelius Ryan’s 1959 non-fiction book of the same name about the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Featuring a large international star-studded cast, including John Wayne, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum and Richard Todd (a D-Day veteran himself) – “The Longest Day” is regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest wartime epics.

It received positive acclaim from critics and was a significant commercial success becoming the highest grossing black-and-white movie at that time.

Invariably compared with “Saving Private Ryan” – this film score over the more modern work because of the focus on all the major sides of the action (British, Americans, French, German –Canadians were there as well!)

I am old enough to have seen this epic motion picture when it was first released and I was simply impressed about it all. This is without a doubt a g-r-e-a-t film! It’s not perfect but its faults are few and minor.

I see the movie every Memorial Day. It helps me to remember my father, a U.S. Navy (Insular Force) (N) RM3 - Native Radioman third class petty officer in World War II. Simply put if things had gone differently on June 6, 1944 – all of us would be living in a very different and very much uglier world than we have now.

There is no doubt about it that “The Longest Day” is Darryl F. Zanuck’s tribute to all who were involved in the Allied invasion at Normandy.

This June 6, 2024 will mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast of France during World War II. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day – a day now known as the greatest amphibious landing in history – I thought I should write something about it – especially right on the heels of Memorial Day celebrations last weekend.

To start off, here is a brief history of the D-Day Landings: The D-Day operations of June 6, 1944 brought together the land, air and sea forces of the Allied Armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename

“OVERLORD” delivered five naval assault divisions on the beaches of Normandy, France. The D-Day landing on 6 June 1944 was a decisive turning point in the Second World War. The Liberation of France and Europe began on the beaches of Normandy. It was in Normandy that the face of today’s world was shaped. From 1942 onwards, with the Raid on Dieppe, the history of Normandy as a whole was instinctively linked to that of the return of “Freedom, Peace and Reconstruction”.

On 6 June 1944 and in the days that followed, thousands of young men from fifteen different nations and 177 Frenchmen from the Kieffer Commando landed at the beaches of Normandy to liberate the country. By midnight on 6 June, more than 150,000 Allied soldiers were in Normandy, including 21,000 paratroopers and 20,000 vehicles of all sizes. About 12,000 men had been killed, wounded or taken prisoners. Three months of battles followed to liberate Normandy. Then it was the turn of Paris and finally the whole of Europe.

Even today through the remains, cemeteries, places to visit and emblematic heritage of the Reconstruction, these traces are still visible and keeps the memory alive.

The D-Day landings on 6 June 1944 and the Battle of Normandy are ingrained on the minds of every Norman and forms part of a shared heritage that we all have a duty to pass on as fellow Americans.

As for this column’s main inquiry on whether any of our “kababayans” landed in Normandy on D-Day the 6th of June – well, the answer is a very loud “Yes!”

On his book “101ST Airborne: The Screaming Eagles of World War II” the author and historian Mark Bando does a nice job of illuminating the official history of the famed unit with vignettes from the soldiers themselves. These personal stories – if I must attest – add a touch of realism and bring the actions to life for the readers, who comes away with a much better understanding of what these men endured. I say the author has certainly paid a lasting tribute to the ‘epic memories’ of the 101st Airborne, who like so many others, were the ‘vanguards and heroes’ for the United States during World War II.

And right on the book’s section of combat experiences, the first soldier profiled was our very own “kababayan” – Corporal Manny Gesulga of the 502nd Parachute

Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Gesulga was part of the 101st paratroop drop behind enemy lines at Normandy and his combat exploits genuinely read like something out of a “G.I. Joe” adventure book. After living his harrowing experiences in Normandy, he went on to fight in “Operation Market Garden” (injured by shrapnel) and in the “Battle of the Bulge” (wounded by sniper fire) but always did return to his unit – the awesome 101st Airborne Division. He came out of the war to live a full productive life. Interestingly, Gesulga never mentioned his role in World War II but the writer Mark

Bando did give credence to him and the other warriors of the 101st Airborne Division.

FYI: This book by Mark Bando – if I must say it – is a must-read for all history buffs such as myself and it really brings home the essence of duty and commitment to freedom that is absolutely the legacy of the young men of “America’s greatest generation” – which included our fellow “kababayans.”

Yes, indeed…there were many Filipino-Americans who served in the European theater during World War II. When the United States entered World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Filipino-

Americans were among those who immediately joined the U.S. military to fight in the war. Numerous Filipino-Americans served in various branches of the U.S. military including the Army, Navy and Army Air Forces and some of these folks were deployed to the European theaters of operations.

One notable group of FilipinoAmericans who served in Europe during World War II were the soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments. These units were part of the United States Army and was composed primarily of Filipino-Americans and Filipino soldiers. They were deployed to

Europe and fought on campaigns in Italy and France among other European locations.

Overall, Filipino-Americans made significant contributions to U.S. military efforts during World War II - both in the Pacific and European theater of operations – and their services and sacrifices are an integral part of the broader history of that armed conflict.

Know of any other Filipinos (or Filipino-Americans, for that matter) who fought on D-Day?

Let us know and honor them on D-Day the Sixth of June.

God bless the U.S. of A! Mabuhay!!

Spiritual Life

The Super-agers in our midst

“Super-ager” is a term coined by a neurologist, Marsel Mesulam, for those whose memory and attention isn’t merely above average for their age, but is virtually at par with healthy active 25 years old. I am 87 years old and my (second) husband is 91 years old, and from our daily conversations, I have the confidence to say that we are “Super-agers.”

Super-aging is not a bed of roses. In fact, there are so many thorns that prick super-agers, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer often rear their ugly head when you least expect them. Dementia sets in robbing you of precious memories. Depression changes your personality and life is no longer as beautiful as you have experienced it to be.Aches and pains in your muscles or joints are constantly present in your body.

We are fortunate to have our own primary care physician who monitors our health and who refers us to other medical specialists when needed.

Praise God, I could still think straight, make decisions, and continue doing the things I love to do. I would like to thank The Filipino Press for giving me the opportunity to write this column, which I have been doing for the past 25 years. Writing this column inspires me to bloom like a spring flower in winter. Winter symbolizes the late phase of a human being’s life. It is cold like an attic full of memorabilia, wrapped in tattered sweater, often taken for granted if not ignored by those who are in the springtime of their lives.

In the winter of our lives, even our children, no matter how they profess their love for us, are too

My Personal Testimony

busy building their own lives, caring for their families, and accumulating memories of their own.

Their parents who are perceived to have lived their own lives are left to themselves, often the beneficiary of whatever entitlements they derived from government. Those who are living in the winter of their lives, like ourselves, feel that we have still keen minds filled with wisdom gained from the school of life. Unfortunately, the meteoric rise of technology has left many of us behind.

What will you do with seniors, especially those blessed with longevity, whose minds are still active and who are still eager to live life to the fullest, still hopeful that the best is yet to come? What will you do with a parent who has surpassed the normally accepted life span of 75 years? Will you place them in a nursing home where they will be taken care of by others until they are “summoned to join the innumerable caravan” that goes to the Great Beyond? These are some of the questions that our children or grandchildren have to deal with. We are glad that there are

government and non-government agencies that could help those who are caring for “Super-agers”. Most of them are just a phone call away. But for the Filipino family, respect for elders and love for family are deeply ingrained values, hence, they try their best to re-arranged their lives to take care of the super-ager in their family.

My prayer. Thank you dear God for the blessings of life and longevity that you have given us. Grant us the strength to do Your will in our lives. Make use of us in whatever way we can to be of service to others. Bless our loved ones and make them instruments of your love and caring. Give them the patience to care for the weak and infirm, the generosity to share their time and treasure to those in need, and the compassion to help those who need help and attention in their daily lives, especially during this time of uncertainty. Please stop Dear God the spread of the corona virus and hasten the discovery of a vaccine that will protect us from the disease. Be with our leaders and guide them in doing what is right, what is good, and what is beautiful in Your sight. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

God is with you

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. 'Isn't this Joseph's son?' they asked. (Luke 4:22)

Jesus was more qualified to be a carpenter than the Son of God in the view of religious leaders and the common people of his day. He was also becoming known as a rabbi who thought and did things "outside the box." He was an unusual mixture of the earthly common man who did daily work just like his other villagers in Nazareth. So, when the public ministry side of his life began to surface, the first observations were, "Isn't this Joseph, the carpenter's son?"

This is not unlike what happens when God calls you or I into a more public ministry. "Isn't that John, the CPA, or Bill the restaurant manager, or Susie the bank executive?" The first question among our critics is "Where did John, Bill, or Susie get religion?"

The religious spirit in the community reveals itself in many ways. The religious spirit can best be defined as an agent of Satan assigned to prevent change and maintain the status quo by using religious devices. The religious spirit seeks to distort a genuine move of God through deception, control and manipulation. It was the primary force against Jesus designed to intimidate and turn His relationship with God into a set of rules and regulations. Satan does not want Jesus in the workplace

Greetings in the Lord!

After celebrating the feast of the Almighty God whom we profess as One and Triune, today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus, commonly known as Corpus Christi. If the mystery of the trinity is one that transcends human understanding, the mystery of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist in the form of body and wine is another that cannot easily be accepted. Nevertheless, this is the reality that all the four gospels narrate that Jesus himself mentioned that He is the bread of life that came down from heaven. Only in eating this bread which is his own body and drinking the wine which turns to be his blood can one gain eternal life. Indeed, it is a real mystery laden with God’s love for humanity and humanity’s desire for participation in the life of the divine. This springs real hope for eternity.

Reflection on this mystery would not be enough in the framework of a message on the day of this wonderful Feast, but allow me to simply share some points for us to remember during this feast. The first that comes to my mind is the tremendous greatness of God’s love for humanity. He did not only send his only Son Jesus who gave his life on the for humanity in filial trust and obedience to his Father, but he continues to remain in the midst of humanity for no other reason but to keep this love of the Father alive in the hearts and minds of humanity. Jesus remains true and really present in the world in spite of the fact that

He has already ascended back to his heavenly abode in the sacramental forms of the bread and wine that he left behind as a memorial of his saving actions, words and life while on earth. Isn’t this real love for man who remains oftentimes deaf to his words and insensitive to his presence if not doubtful of his existence? However, He continues to be faithful to his promises that he would not abandon man and only when man would believe in Him and receive Him in faith and devotion would man truly see and understand how wonderful is God’s love for and in return how he can truly love others in the manner that Jesus himself has loved humanity.

The second reality is the fact that the faith in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist which is lasting sign of his love for man is the foundation of all the activities that man could ever do in responding to Jesus and his call to follow him. When we come to believe in the presence of Jesus in our midst as an act of his perpetual love for us, then we reciprocate to his love by loving

PAGMAMAHAL

Him in return and loving other neighbors who are visible in our lives. This is truly the beginning of becoming a community of disciples which come together because of the love for Jesus and the love for others. In the Encyclical letter of St. John Paul II entitled “Ecclesia de Eucharistia” he clearly mentioned that the Church is founded on the Eucharist itself and the Eucharist is truly the foundation on which his disciples come together to be nourished, sustained and have to strength to carry on his original mission of bringing the good news to people.

Ano nga ba ang sukat ng pagmamahal?

Ang sukat ng pagmamahal ay pagmamahal na walang sukat.

The third reality that I wish to share is the fact that our sharing in the mission of Jesus can only happen and be effectively successful when it is based on the mystery of the Eucharist. For this reason I believe that we must examine ourselves today how deep is our faith in Jesus and his real presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Our catechism tells us that He really, truly and sacramentally present in the Bread and Wine that we see consecrated at mass and reserved in the Blessed Sacrament. How does this faith in his real presence influence our daily lives, as members of a Catholic family, as members of a parish community, as Catholic workers in the midst of a world that is no longer open to believe in the existence of God? The feast of Corpus Christi should be an occasion for us to renew commitment to love Jesus and do his new commandment of love for others now and forever. Danny Hernaez From

because that is where the authority lies to change a workplace, city or nation. God desires you to bring His presence with you into the workplace every day. Do not let the enemy of your soul shame you into alienating your faith from your work. Today, ask Jesus to go with you. The two of you just might be the team to bring someone out of slavery and bondage.

Heavenly Father, I come before Your throne, today, and I speak this blessing upon this congregation: May the Lord keep you and may the Lord make His face to shine upon you; may the Lord be gracious unto you and place His countenance upon you, and may the Lord give you His peace. Lord God, I ask You in the name above every name, that You open up the windows of heaven and pour out divine provision upon every one of your children. Heavenly Father, in this time of economic peril, let them have the best of things in the worst of times, and let them know that it comes from the divine source of Jehovah Jireh, their provider. I speak health and healing

to every physical body. I come against every form of infirmity; I come against every form of disease; I come against every malady in the name of Jesus Christ and I declare that they are cursed at the root and that the blessing of divine health freely flows into the lives of this congregation. Lord, I speak peace to every life that is in torment, for Your name is Jehovah, Shalom, our Peace. I give You praise, Father, that the enemy has been defeated and the peace of God has now healed every broken heart. Every sorrow is lifted right now; every burden and yoke, it is destroyed because You, O Lord, are the Joy in the morning; You, O Lord, are more than enough; You, O Lord, are our strength and our song, and we magnify Your Holy name. I thank You, that You are our Righteousness; You are our Shepherd; You are our divine Giver of life. Let the power of this blessing rest upon you and in you and be imparted by you when you use your words in the authority of Jesus' name. Amen. dhernaez1@aol.com <(((><

Danica Sotto breaks silence on Marc Pingris cheating allegations

MANILA -- Danica Sotto has broken her silence on her husband Marc Pingris’ recent cheating allegations.

In a recent interview on the “Updated with Nelson Canlas” podcast, Danica said that although she and Marc want to move on from the issue, she decided to speak up to give clarity.

At the height of the allegations, Danica said she posted a quote about betrayal and loyalty on her Instagram Stories. This was then connected to the cheating rumors surrounding Marc, but Danica clarified that the post was about somebody else.

“I post because I like the quote or sometimes, noong time na iyon, aaminin ko, it was a feeling that I was feeling about someone else, na parang napipikon ako sa isang tao. And that is a person na nangloko sa amin sa negosyo. A person we truly trusted,” she said.

Danica added that they are still going through this major business challenge.

“This tabloid, ang ginawa, kinuha ‘yung quote ko na ‘yun. Sinabi na I'm confirming daw the issue kasi pinapatamaan ko daw si Marc. Pero hindi na ako nagsalita,” she said.

After the post, Danica said that she and Marc talked and agreed that they shouldn’t post quotes because these may be misinterpreted.

“So, parang doon pumasok 'yung

communication namin na usap,” she said.

Danica added, “Tapos ako naman sa side ko, pinagsabihan ko lang siya na, ingat sa mga nakakasama, ingat sa mga pinupuntahan. Minsan kasi, sa'yo wala lang ‘yun, you're too friendly or—hindi friendly, accommodating. Diba? ‘Yung parang, oh, ito chikachika. Ganoon naman mga basketball player e.”

“Ang napikon lang naman ako din dun is parang nakakatawa kasi they really—ang galing magtahi-tahi ng tao ng kuwento...” Danica said.

“Tapos ‘yun lang gagawin ng mga tao, gagawan ng butas, pag didikitdikitin, tatagpi-tagpiin,” she added, emphasizing that the whole issue was

misinterpreted, “nabigyan ng malisya, binigyan ng kulay.”

Danica said that she was not affected by the issue because she had already grown used to rumors, having grown up in the showbiz industry. However, Danica said she only got frustrated when netizens attacked her kids.

“Syempre, napikon ako pag anak mo na ‘yung tinitira. May sasabihin na masama, na very very foul,” she said. “I think 'yung foul doon is parang may mga sinabi na it's the karma of my parents. ‘Yung ganoon.”

In March, Marc and actress Kim Rodriguez were rumored to be having an affair, following viral and similar photos of them with staff at a fries

Gray is one of just 28 highperforming 11th and 12th graders throughout the United States selected for the elite program, which was established in 2021 by the Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) to increase exposure to Naval Aviation. The Navy partners with select universities throughout the country to provide the flight training to the participating students. The cost of the program is approximately $28,000/student but is offered at zero cost to the student and with no obligations. Upon completion of the program, each student earns a private pilot certification/license and five college credits. The Department of the Navy sponsors the Summer Flight Academy program for students participating in Navy and Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The program is a STEM initiative that was selected for funding by the Naval

“The goal of the scholarship program is to inspire and expose exceptional young talent from communities across the nation to a career path in Naval Aviation,” says Tamara Graham, Deputy Director, CNAF Flight Academy Program Manager. “Connor Gray has demonstrated incredible potential, and the Navy is honored to play a part in his personal and professional journey.” During the eight-week Summer Flight Academy, he will receive a minimum of 32 hours of classroom aviation academics and more than 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or Piper Warrior (PA-28). As part of the certification process, Gray will be required to complete 17 hours of solo flights.
